I’ve become addicted to watching people’s reaction to hearing this song for the first time because it truly is remarkable the way he gets the message of this song across in a way it never had before. Simon and Garfunkel created a masterpiece with the lyrics, but Disturbed forced people to truly take in the words.
I will say this is one of the more heartfelt reactions to this song and am happy I’ve found this so soon after it was done. And thank you so much for being younger and aware of who sings it and didn’t just say ‘this is that song from those memes’. For some reason that bugs the crap out of me that’s how most most younger people know the song.

I know EXACTLY what you mean! I LOVE watching reactions to this version of "Sound of Silence" by Disturbed, "Hallelujah" by Pentatonix and of course, "Creep" by Post Modern Jukebox with Hailey Rinehart. Others too, of course, but these three in particular.
Me as well. I love to see the way his voice takes people apart. They think they know what they are getting, but they have no idea.

David does such a great job of showing off his vocal range in this song. It all sounds effortless (though I know he trained for years) as he goes from a baritone that you feel in you bones to the higher notes that ring like a bell. The fact that he clears up that metal grit for the final "sound of silence" with just a single "whispered" shows how well he's mastered that technique.
I do wish he wouldn't stop every 5 seconds to yell how beautiful it is!!!

David Draiman was raised as an orthodox Jew. He went to a college of Torah study to become a Cantor. A cancer sings Everything the rabbi just read from the Torah Friday night services. Cantos have very deep luscious voice. Even if you don't understand Hebrew, and I don't, it is a very beautiful thing to hear because not all synagogues have cantors. An example of art imitating life where was the movie quite a while ago with quite a while ago with Neil Diamond called The Jazz Singer. He comes from a long line of cantorfs and is expected to be one himself. However he wants to pursue his own music, jazz. David Draiman did the same thing.

Your point about this being like opera music is spot on, it's crescendo of sound and emotion that really makes this song come to life. It is sung to perfection. This song written by Simon & Garfunkle was MEANT to be performed this way.

This song is a poem about the human condition: loneliness. Paul Simon wrote it and he and Art Garfunkel played it in a folksy, up-tempo harmonized version. It was popular as a reaction to the glitzy neon-light society of the late 50s and early 60s. Actually, the neon light was a metaphor for the grinding advance of technology that had inserted itself between humans; replacing human interaction with insipid, vacuous "entertainment.". This is far worse now. How many of us find ourselves talking without speaking by texting lies to our friends? How about hearing without listening? And computerized music producing music that voices never sing? That is why Disturbed slowed the song down, lowered its register, and put a large orchestra sound in the background. The music video is all about real music, with real instruments reaching out to our huddled masses hoping to reignite communication among people. That is why this thing hits you like a freight train. It is an instant classic and far more impactful than the original that it pays homage to.

I'm very late, but the lead singer David is classically trained. This is probably my favorite of Disturb's songs and definately my favorite rendition of the actual song. Simon and Garfunkel gave it to us, but they sang it in a way that was an almost it's too late, sad state of affairs way. Disturb comes at it from a more aggressive angry tone, like this is the problem, let's find the way out of the silence we are in. Very relevant ironically today if you think about it.

Hello again..there are theories for this song..but the most popular is that mental illness is not getting the attention it needs. When Simon and Garfunkel released it in 1964 it was a warning..Disturbed version was anger because there is still not enough done..and Pentatonix version is sad..yet hopeful. Beautiful..timeless..

This is one of my favorite songs. I think it speaks to the fact that S &G could see the music was changing. The prophets of what we call the classics were given a back seat to the neon lights of disco. And all the great artists of the 60s with their beautiful lyrical analogies were being reduced metaphorically to the subway walls, hidden never heard. Radios changed and music became something less thought provoking.
All of this of course is only opinion. But if you go back and listen under this pretense, I think you’ll understand where I’m coming from.
Today, after multiple decades of different genres, I believe this thought provoking music is returning. Now, how do we bring the modern prophets from the “subways” to the newest generation and carry it so we don’t lose it again. There are a few modern artists that have this power to do this and you already know at least one of them. I think Grace is going to reclaim the poetry of the past and her platform will bring others along. So if you get a chance, don’t forget “River” by Leon Bridges and then covered by Grace.
With respect, I disagree. Every artist's work is affected by the time/era that they live in and their work is often a reflection of that era (btw, when it comes to music, I'm talking about real music, not the bubble-gum crap created in a record executive's studio and pumped out to a generation of intellectual zombies). Paul Simon wrote this song during the 1960's, an era known for social upheaval, the questioning of traditional values and norms by the youth and the creation of the counter-culture. One institution that started facing a lot of questions was the government. The 50's were over and so too were people's blind acceptance of whatever the government said was the 'truth'. For the first time, people started openly questioning and protesting their government's decisions about everything from Civil Rights to the Vietnam War and everything in between.
I believe Paul Simon wrote this song as a warning to people to not remain silent when it came to questioning their government's decisions and their motives for those decisions, reminding everyone that, in a democracy, we are the ultimate check on a government running amok with power. As powerful as the words are, they were presented in a folk-song. Again, I believe this was the result of the era within which the song was created. The 'Flower Children' of the 60's believed love could conquer all and, to that end, there is no need to scream out a social message. It would be counter-productive, in that era, to present such a message in an angry way. The song explained what the stakes were and then warned us to keep our guard up and be ready to make some noise.
Fast forward 50 years and it seems apparent that we did not heed the warning. Along comes Disturbed with a whole new take on this classic. The message is the same but the feel is very different. It's one of anger and frustration at all of us for not having heeded the original warning. As the song builds to it's climax, you can feel Draiman's combination of anger, pain and frustration at our failure as he seems to be telling us that we, through our silence, are responsible for the world that we now live in. However, this message does also come with a sliver of hope.
The hope is that we can change things. We were the ones who made this mess so we should be the ones to clean it up. Step up, be heard and do your part to make the world a better place. It is the sort of mentality and outlook on life that seems to be inspiring millions of young people around the world to unite in organizing major, world-wide, protests for everything from gun-violence to climate change. This generation is using the tech to instantly organize massive protests around the world. In doing, so they are not only showing the way to older generations like mine, they might actually be living up to the challenge Paul Simon, and later Disturbed, gave all of us.

I would add that another of my top three favorite singer/songwriters is Grace VanderWaal. (Actually, she's number one for me now.) So I agree with John Raymond that she will be the Paul Simon of my grandchildren's generation!

Fable - Nuclear Reactor Most people would suggest their song Down With the Sickness. I like that one but would also suggest Inside the Fire, Are You Ready, Hold Onto the Memories, No More as a few to start with. David Draiman(lead singer) has a powerful voice. Disturbed is one of my favorite bands.

Terrific reaction! Paul Simon supposedly put his thumbs up for this version. I wish somehow I could convey how important the original was to me and many others of my generation as we grew up with this music. It was, for a lot of us, our anthem as we worked so hard for social justice and peace. It didn't have the powerful, almost symphonic, sound of this version, but spoke to us with just as much power through the poetry written as lyrics. I will add my voice to others who believe that Grace VanderWaal will likely pick up this poetic sword as a singer/songwriter for the coming generation.
