The Japanese studio meant no disrespect when they made this series. They did respect Tove Jansson and they loved her characters and world, which is why they really wanted to make it animated, they just went about it questionably. This serie's themes was actually pretty normal at the time. It was really common to depict violence, death, guns, war machines, murder and abuse(young characters were not exempted from this) in cartoons aimed at even young children in Japan. If you watch older era animation, you'll notice just how dark and heartbreaking they can be. They basically just wanted to make a cartoon that kids would be into, and what was ideal for modern audiences, with cities and common themes. They tried really hard to make Tove Jansson pleased, they redid the style after 20 something episodes, cancelled it and remade a whole new series, but they missed it's true essence. Still, this is a really great relic. It's one of the funniest and absurd shows I've watched, and it inspired me a lot as an artist. Snufkin's theme was pretty badass. Also, Hayao Miyazaki actually animated in this at one point.
@@karihotakainen5210 Maybe from your perspective, but this was very well done in its era. It has a lot more fluid movement and effort put into it than many shows at its time. It just sounds like you don't respect old animation or history, I'm a professional animator and illustrator and even I can see the love and work put into this show. Miyazaki DEFENDED this show again Tove Jansson, which shows how much he respected it. It had nothing to do with spiting her, they just had huge cultural differences. Japan suffered greatly in the war(and yes I'm aware they did bad things too) but they knew the horrors of war better than anyone. Rather than resist it, they embraced it. That's why a lot of 60s series are about war and glorifying (like the 60s sci Fi with robot wars) yet also showing the horrors of it(such as DevilMan), of course, they used things like monsters and robots and aliens, but it's all the same. You know, moominpapa owns a shotgun and has used it. Its not a thing about being pure, you see. Its just a thing among other things, and moomins are not that into things. Its sort of zen. Like shaolin monks being nonviolent. When there is no desire to use violence, a weapon is no longer a symbol of violence.
@@korn6722 Dont know about comics, but the original books. Moominpapa has a pipe and he did make wine. But its not about alcohol getting-drunk thing. Its about making something. Its a cooking-thing. Like tea ceremony. Its not about tea. The moomins are in a way very innocent, without being naive. Close to nature, perhaps. You have berries too sour to eat, so you make wine. Its difficult to explain and difficult to understand, if you dont already understand. But what you should understand, is that the moomins are more than half true. They have guns, and wine, and tobacco. Moominvalley is a real place, a summer cottage on a tiny island and most of the people are true, and many things are true too. Moomins sleep all winter right? Well, she worked and lived in the city all winter. The island was a place to get away from city, society, even outside morals. Alcohol is bad if you get drunk, stupid and addicted. Thats reality. Moomins did none of that. But society doesnt think drunk and addicted are bad, its alcohol thats bad. Thats moralistic. Society thinks guns are bad. Guns are not bad. Shooting people and getting addicted are bad. You end up with artificial beliefs and codes until you have a jungle of them, a morality jungle that is not about right and wrong, its about morality that bloats itself like bureaucracy. But Moominvalley is a tiny island in the sea among ten thousand similar islands. Its a refuge away from those rules. Its anarchistic without the connotations of violence and being out of control. Its about going back to the basics. Fish from the sea, harvest berries, cook soup, sit and watch the fish and the birds and the waves and the clouds. Read a book until your candle runs out... no artificial morality, just be nice to everyone... You know what? Im off to the cottage too. Gonna sit and look at the sea and listen to the birds and rabbits.
Well... The first gun I had fired was a modded Mauser Model 1935... It gives you a huge adrenaline rush the first time... A very pleasant feeling, with a post pain in the shoulder since it was my first time and didn't have quite clear the recoil management.
You get used to it, and then you wouldn't have it any other way. He's an adult, he's travelled around the world, he smokes, has musical and vocal training - and really, he's not even human. By any right, his voice being this low is perfectly reasonable.
I didn't even know that there were TWO anime adaptations preceding the most famous 90's version! And I'm a Finn, and the Moomin are practically one of our national treasures!
0:00-0:13 In the Words of Jill Drinks are flowing. You know we each have one or two but some of the Moomins have been drinking all day. And some of them have been drinking all night.

I was laughing up until that point but seeing that made me sad all of a sudden. I may need more context

1990’s moomin: flowers, nature, cottagecore aes
1960’s moomin: FUCKING GUNS
Ah, so this is why Tove hated this adaption so much.
WHY ARE THERE SO MANY GUNS ESPECIALLY THE REOCCURING SNIPER RIFLE 😂😂😂😂😂
I didn't know Tarantino was already active in the 60s, let alone that he wrote a Moomin adaptation.
Nobody:
Moomin firing a gun: mhh feels nice
Everyone's hating on it for not being a faithful adaptation but to me it looks like a hilarious watch.
Never thought I'd see Moomin with a gun, especially since he looks so pure for such thing skjskabx
@@ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681 Ah yeah I see, I've read somewhere that moomin smoked and drank in the comics if I'm not wrong??
I swear snufkin's a bad influencer
Everything in this is a bad influencer
Just influence. "Bad influence".
Moomin put the glock down!!!
PRAISE ATUA Omae wa mou shinderou
It almost looks like a parody of the moomins released in the 90s
I have never watched this show, I know nothing about this show, but the image of the Snufkin guy with a gun absolutely terrifies me.
Now i know what the author feels.
0:16 moomin family is canonically catholic
Well then LETS MAKE THEM PROTESTANT!
Moomin: _fires a gun_ Aahhh that feels gooood!
Lmao wow 😂
Well... The first gun I had fired was a modded Mauser Model 1935... It gives you a huge adrenaline rush the first time... A very pleasant feeling, with a post pain in the shoulder since it was my first time and didn't have quite clear the recoil management.

LMAOO MOOMINVALLEY WAS ON SOME DRUGS IN THE 60S
I honestly really hate Snufkin's voice in this one, lol. Which is a shame because he looks so adorable.
What's there to hate? He has always had a very deep voice, that has never changed.
And I'm a Finn, and the Moomin are practically one of our national treasures!
there are many adaptions of the moomins. you can look them up in wikipedia. this version was the first to be in 2d hand drawn animation.
Snufkin's voice is husbando material in every version of this anime

Who doesn't
weird fetish but ok
love this because all other snufkins are reserved and calm but then 60s snufkin will commit a hate crime

90's groke: scary and ominous

It might not have been the most faithful adaptation, but it certainly has the most meme moments.
No, I’d say the 90’s version wins in the meme department.

Drinks are flowing. You know we each have one or two but some of the Moomins have been drinking all day. And some of them have been drinking all night.

This is by far the best, most compelling version of Moomin I've ever seen.
That dying lion clearly makes the PacMan dying sound, two decades before PacMan existed.
Also that zebra at 3:13 looks bizarrely well-animated next to everyone else.
