White Guy Shocks African Market by Speaking Their Language

  • I’ve been spending the last two or three weeks studying Wolof, a West African language spoken in Senegal, the Gambia, and Mauritania, and today I’ve come to Harlem to try it out in NYC’s Little Senegal neighborhood, including at the Malcolm Shabazz Harlem Market and the great Senegalese restaurant Le Baobab on 116th street.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to try Senegalese cuisine, I would highly recommend checking out the ceebu jën (also spelled thieboudienne) here, which is Senegal’s national dish! It’s also the origin of the popular Nigerian and Ghanaian dish “jollof rice” - the word “jollof” actually originally refers to Wolof!
I learned by chatting with Awa on Italki for 1-2 hours per day. If you’re interested in learning Wolof or French (she’s a native French speaker as well), I would highly recommend booking a lesson with her - she’s an absolutely amazing teacher! www.italki.com/teacher/6971240

Believe on the LORD Jesus Christ for eternal life, he is the way, and the truth, and the life. Be washed by Jesus Christ today and obtain the Holy Spirit which shall guide you into all truth. Jesus Christ died for the sins of the whole word and no one is perfect but Jesus Christ, the one who came in the flesh, and arose from the dead, and now lives for ever. To be saved and to live for ever is only done by believing on the Son of God as the Saviour and LORD, no work is necessary to be saved. This eternal life which God shall give you can never be taken away by anyone! It is the gift of eternal life. Call today on the name of Jesus, and be saved. Pray to the only wise God, and ask him to save you, tell him that you believe in him.

A lot of African cultures put more value on money/ trade/ haggling because they come from economic hardship. Many Asian countries are more reserved and humble so seeing a white guy speaking a language that even many Chinese struggle with is not only surprising but also very admirable.

I’m surprised they’re not more impressed by him speaking their language. I find it so cool when people from different country speak/dress in my country’s language/traditional clothings. I never understood today’s culture appropriation garbage stuff. Do you realize how hard it is to learn a new language? When people speak your language or want to look like you it’s because they appreciate your culture. Bravo to him! ❤
