      Made a start on this one about 2 weeks ago..... Sorry for the to say but I think you got the wrong colour inside the wheel well and undercarriage legs... Should be silver. Only the back part of the wheel well is the chromate yellow /green 👍

    • @ModellingWeekly

      @@DavidJones-wr3sb yeah, I didn't follow the instructions on purpose :D I like the chromate yellow, so I used that. Wasn't trying to be too accurate.

    Eduard has been a wonderful modeling 😍success story. They started with some crude WW1 aircraft and photo etch and now they are in the top tier of model manufacturers.

    The color of aluminum on the finished model reminds me of a more naturally oxidized patina that was much more realistic in the field.

    • @ModellingWeekly
      @ModellingWeekly  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, that's a stroke of luck! I do love the idea of a highly reflective finish, though it's true that it probably wouldn't be very realistic.

    Wonderful build. I’m about to paint a similar P-51D with the same blue front, and wonder if you have tips or a video on masking the fuselage. Thanks!

    • @ModellingWeekly
      @ModellingWeekly  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Many thanks! My top tip for the blue front section would be to use some Tamiya flexible masking tape, as it's very capable of handling those smooth turns and corners 👍 good luck!

    Thank you for the great video! Detailed commentary is always welcome. Are you still using Vallejo Metal? I'm having reasonable success with it. The gloss primer however is pretty awful if you ask me. I suggest using their standard gray primer in a 60/40 thinner to primer ratio. Beautiful build!

    • @ModellingWeekly
      @ModellingWeekly  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! At the moment I've moved onto Mr colour super metallic lacquers, as I find they have a shinier finish in general - mixing some gx100 gloss into Mr surfacer 1500 black also serves as a great primer layer 👍 the Vallejo gloss black primer is pretty bad I agree lol

    • @mikey354
      @mikey354 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately there aren't a lot of water based metallizer options out there. As far as I know Vallejo Metal is the premier product in that category. I don't want to use lacquers, but by the looks of it the best results are achieved with lacquer based products. Also, it would be fantastic if manufacturers would use black plastic for P-51s in general. A little polish and boom, you're ready for paint...

    Have a P-51K and "Tales of Iwo Jim" in the stash.. But with aftermarket decals (Ray Wetmore´s "Daddy´s Girl" and William Sak´s "The Enchantress" - love those two.. The K will become a D.. ;) )so great reference watching you build it!
    Came out really good! Well done!

      @@ModellingWeekly Yeah.. I thought about the Royal Class but skipped it.. The Enchantress was there (I have build a Tamiya with it but I did not do a great job - just plain rattle can silver.... No weathering)
      I actually have 1/32 decals for both too. But other options too..
      iirc the box is just the decals 8which many arwe availble from others), some resin wheels and rocket stubs..? Basically.. But I like the package and I knew i would regret not getting it.

    About 25 years ago one of the 352nds pilots, Bob "Punchy" Powell, came to our IPMS chapter and gave a talk. He brought along a cowling panel from his P-51B, The West "By God" Virginian, which had crashed on take off shortly after D-Day. Let's say there is no correct color for that blue.
    I built a P-51B in 1/72 many years ago and used a Model Master automotive color for the blue...

      I think the best know blue used was called "french blue"..I'm sure I read somewhere some of the outhouses where painted with the same paint as used on the aircraft..and it's been identified as "french blue"...But yes..other blues where used..I guest what ever was available at the time..as most things during the war...you used what you were given.

      @@alantoon5708 Well...got to brighten up the place! :-). I'm sure it was the outhouses that were painted..I might have mis-read...but still. Love the P-51. My fav aircraft of WW2..and CAM3rd is my all time fav aircraft..Though there's no better aircraft to see fly than a Spitfire..Lucky enough to have seen "Miss Helen" fly. The only P-51 of the 352nd still flying. Though how much of her is still original is anyones guess. Also saw the P-51B "Princess Elizabeth"..The colours of William Whisner of the 352nd. She was given the name to honour Princess Elizabeth (now Queen) who visted the base. Whisner wasn't happy..haha!. He also flew in Korea. Unfortunately he had an allergic reaction to a hornet (wasp) sing in his backyard and died.

    • @ModellingWeekly

      The change was mostly because alclad gloss is just a shinier, better quality product to be honest. Can't say I ever had issues like you describe. I'd say it's probably something to do with drying times, though I'm not entirely sure
