These are cars I grew up on. Blown Hemi's , Blown BB Fords and my favourites , the Chevrolets!! To see factory SS cars in their prime is absolutely sublime. Thanks for the great up load!
That was outstanding. When privateers not big money was driving drag racing. Great creativity and engineering made each car unique. 2 inline six cylinder engines in that dragster running 6 Webber carbs must have sounded amazing.
man that loping idle at the end, nothing can match my youth at the drag strip,my second home, the noise, the smell,i'm a happy man,and the girls, thank you
It always makes me smile when I see pictures of Jim Bucher and his SSP Special. I remember having the toy version that Kenner Toys produced and also got to see him race the real thing at Edgewater. I was at his house once, got to meet him thru a friend . Standing in his garage while he worked on the car. RIP Jim
One of Jeff's best tunes. If you did not know, Jeff Beck was into building cars as well as being one of the most influential guitar players ever. To this day, he still has quite a collection of cars and guitars. He started out with a nicely built 63 split window Corvette that he would road and track race!
Man. I remember seeing Sox and Martin, Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins, Don Prudhomme and Big Daddy Don Garlits..on one bill! Atco Dragway, NJ It was a gentler time back then. Good clean fun.
DLX MYSTIK amen man same here. Still got my 70 plymouth . loved the 70s sure miss em . People were a lot different back then and there wasn't any politics in our face everyday 24/7. LOL
Oh yeah well done, wicked guitar, wicked cars and braless mega-hooters, does it get any better? lol Im 53, sure miss these days, I grew up on 10-40 and burnin' rubber - doesn't get much more American than this.
I miss the type of drag cars we used to see at the tracks in the late 60s and 70s. Lots of back yard ingenuity. Racing for the love of the competition . I don't usually like music in TH-cam videos but you can't beat Jeff Beck. Specially with his Hotrod history.
What memories 1969-70 at us 30 seen many of those rides, great job. seen the local guy joe satmary gruge race the little red wagon joe stood his camaro into a wheel stand with Bill the Maverick Golden
It was great to see some old photos from Thompson Drag Raceway /Thompson ,Ohio, My son and I frequent the track often in the summer, always a fantastic time there. Thank you for the great photos.
My dad was a racer back then. I remember Sox&Martin, Grumpy's Toy, Bob Glidden, Shirl Greer's Blue Max, so many greats at the races we went to. I still have 8mm film of Indy drag racing 1966. My dad raced B stock automatic.
remember being 5-9 yrs old and my dad taking me to Lakeland Drag Strip for the "Winston Nationals" and seeing most of these cars...1971-74...still love it
THE best. Built after seeing Every one of these as MODEL kits, and took to drivers to sign boxes...Restored a 1969 for GRUMP at his shop in Pennsylvania. 8 x 10 of it wheels up (as above) with "Grump Lump" stainless steel hood scoop I fabricated for it. Phone number on back, NEVER got to call back.

@HD41117 Thanks for your interest and the kind words. Regarding the dates of, and the equipment used for the audio recordings: A few years ago attended a 3 day Nostalgia Drag Racing event at Thompson Drag-raceway, Thompson, Ohio. I loved seeing all the old vintage racers (just like the old days) and I recorded the audio at that meet. I used a digital recorder (M-AUDIO microtrack II - with its stereo mic), a fantastic piece of field equipment which fits nicely in one hand. Rock on, Charles
I was so in the middle of this. I worked in performance at Chrysler engineering and we all street raced too. So much fun, im old now but want to get on street outlaws with a 313 car. So fun.

Damn that was great, some sweet rides. Love the Mavericks, the bikes and the early dragsters with the motors just before the driver. Thanks for posting this.
Jeff Beck of the Yardbirds best rock guitarist of all time (my opinion anyway) very cool car guy, works on his own hotrods. Don Prudomes smile a mile wide. Thanks.
Yep,No Doubt, Gilchrist had some of the Best-Shots I ever seen! I remember My Uncle Bill Maverick Golden would open-up his briefcase as I would Always ask for a New-Photo to add to My Collection and C.Gilchrist's Photo's would ALWAYS Stick-Out like a Sore-Thumb! Yep,His Glossy B&W's were second to none! THX,Great-Vid CGimaging,ScottyG.
my late grand father used to street race w/ a 49 Plymouth w/ a swapped in early Hemi in the late 50s. my other Uncle used to street race a Ramcharger w/ a swapped in 440 in the mid 80s. my street raced a 73 Charger SE w/ a swapped in 440 6-pack in the early 80s. i have a 73 AMX that has seen a few street races in its time under my ownership of 12 years. the Plymouth is long gone as is the Charger and the Ramcharger (my uncle who owned also passed away).
I see a lot of pictures from Thompson and Dragway 42 here easily the 2 biggest tracks back then and are still in operation today while 42 is completely different looking today.

The blonde is Linda Vaughn,"miss Hurst". The brunette was Jungle Jim's wife Pam. And the Rat Trap Rules! I remember when "color me gone" was the old steel bodied funny car. And wild Willie Borsh in the winged express. So many memories here.
Ionder how many of those pics are from US 30 dragstrip in northwest Indiana. I know the one from :42 is because I used to see it almost every day in Merrillville when I was a kid. Brugos Auto Service was still there when i moved away 6 years ago. I used to love watching all the cars going to the strip on the trailers whenI was young. We used to pick our favorites and hen race our bikes down the block....fun times!!!
Ohhh....help me here. Darnit, I cannot remember that guy's name who raced The Fugitive Corvette Wheelstander. He and I were from Tucson, Az. and he picked me up thumbing for a ride one afternoon back around 1980-82. Very nice, genuine guy. He owned a really cool big military-surplus yard along I-10 near Ruthrauff Rd. and I'd stop in there once in a while to just drool over the bad-ass stuff he had there. Bought a few things here and there, prices were always very reasonable. Ohhh...what was his name. I know he's passed now. I want to say "Dale" - something, but that's prob. not right either. Great video....saw many of those run here at Tucson and at Beeline in Scottsdale.
Regarding my last post....I had to Google to find his name...it was driving me nuts! BOB PERRY God Bless and GodSpeed, Bob. You really were a cool, stand-up dude. Man....I wonder where that old wheelstander is now....and what shape is it in??
Graduated High School. Got a job. Saved my money. Walked into a Chevy showroom. Bought RS/SS 396 Camaro convertible. Drove it a few months. Made all kinds of plans for it. Got home from work one day. Draft notice. Fort Leonard Wood next stop. Car repo'd cause uncle sugar only paid $99/mo and pmt was $105, remember the full loaded package was $4,200 ( 4 speed, positraction, spoiler ect.) called life.
I was 18 in 1971--Between the music and the cars, it was a GREAT TIME to be alive ! !
This brings back some great memories from the 60's and early 70's when both my Mother and Father raced in southern Michigan...
Nothing sounds better than a big block, cam, and open headers. It is music to my ears.
Wow bring back so many memories. I remember a lot of those cars, thank God my memory is still there, for now that is. Good job.
Much....Much.....Much more interesting and entertaining era!
Killer cars, smokin' hots chicks and Jeff Beck, the tri-fecta
