    I freakin love my saddleback bifold wallet!!!! I have had it for 2 to 3 weeks now and this might sound weird but I smell it every day. I love how it looks,feels and smells. I might purchase more products from saddleback. I'm looking forward to seeing how it patinas over the years. I can't wait to fully break it in. I paid $90 for it and it is worth every dollar that I spent.

    I think for a lot of people the problem isn't buying cheap crap, it's not knowing where to go to get quality stuff.

    totally agree with your point .... when I told my a friend how much i paid for a saddleback briefcase and she was like "what?!? its so expensive for such a normal design". Didn't wanna make her look bad in front of everybody showing how little she really knew about leather so i jus kept my mouth shut. But sometimes i feel that people who don't understand should should not talk to much. Instead ask to find out more before making such comments.

    Your video is absolutely true! Recently I finally decided that I'm not buying cheap shit anymore, for the exact same reasons you mentioned. People don't understand that when you buy quality, you buy once! I hate buying the same thing more than once, absent exigent circumstances of course (i.e. theft, fire, or other circumstances one cannot really control). I recently purchased the Saddleback briefcase because last year I was in a bind and needed to obtain a briefcase for work. I spent $30 on a cheap briefcase that looked and felt like decent quality (I knew $30 was cheap, but I thought it'd last me for at least 1 year and I could get something else). No joke, the cheap briefcase was severely ripped by the second month! Mind you, I work in a law office and I only used my briefcase to (1) attend hearings, and (2) bring to work where I'd merely sit the bag in a chair for 8-10 hours a day. I wasn't walking all over the city with the bag, it was just sitting there, quietly, in a climate controlled room, that's it. It ripped because my macbook, charger, and a few files added weight (~6-8 lbs.) and put stress on the seams and stitching. Never again! I prefer quality over quantity ANY day!

    Very intelligent look at the quality versus cost argument. The hardest part for a wallet maker, like us, is that customers don't really want thick wallets. Thus most wallet makers thin down the leathers and use thin profile fabrics on wallet interiors to make their wallets as thin as possible. Heavier duty wallets requires thicker leathers and thicker, more durable fabrics on the interiors. This makes wallets thicker, but also much more durable. Because a wallet takes a lot of abuse in a pocket over it's lifetime, it's easy to see how cheaper/thinner wallets don't last as long as one made with the full grain of leather and durable fabrics.

    I could not agree more with what you are saying. I put a lot of research and thought into the things I buy. And how long something is going to last is very important to me. I also agree with your point about 'is it more than just something.' Things like this have to have a 'second kind of cool' to me.

  • @buriedintheblack

    There's a saying that sums this up perfectly -- "buy quality, and only cry once."

  • @jbcasesoriginal

    All the wallets you show are still usable. I understand the price/value matrix and cost of use/per year. I use it constantly when comparing my cases against inferior competitors. In order for this comparison to be accurate the "inferior" wallet has to be unusable. th-cam.com/video/x_dCgvaEIeY/w-d-xo.html

    I like the time you spent on the cheap wallets showing the poor craftsmanship and cheap materials. But you didn't build any value to the saddleback wallet. You should have took your personal items out and showed in more detail why someone would pay the 50 bucks for it. I know the value and quality of saddleback but many people don't and have never heard of it what they have to offer or grade of leather they use. But good example on crappy wallets and math.

  • @StephenEscallier

    I talk about saddleback thoroughly in the video, this was not meant to be a review, it just talked about dollars spent vs what you get.
    If you look at my channel you will see actual reviews of saddleback wallets.

  • @JaredHayter
    @JaredHayter 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In this video you claim the saddleback wallet will last you the rest of your life. In a later video you replaced it after six months. You now have two lifetimes worth of wallets. How many lifetimes are you planning to live?

    Is your Saddleback a small, medium or large? It looks fairly thick. I'm looking for something high quality without a huge price tag but it has to be on the less bulky side.
    Great video.

    Sorry to disappoint you, but Saddleback leather is really a low end chrome tanned leather junk.

    • @StephenEscallier
      @StephenEscallier  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not really address tanning methods. Working in the fashion industry I am aware of different leather qualities. but for higher end stuff you typically have to pay higher end prices.

    • @joekkl
      @joekkl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A little higher price, perhaps yes, but definitely not high end price. Chrome tanning basically kill the very essence of leather. So, when any company claim they make good quality leather but are using chrome tanned leather, I can't help but roll my eyes & laugh.

    • @dweidemann
      @dweidemann 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Joseph Ko's bold claims about chrome tanned leather seem to be proven inaccurate with any moderate depth of research in leather and leather working.

    You should checkout the Moose Leather Bi-fold wallet (theleathershop.com) way better attention to detail and the craftsmanship makes Saddleback leather look silly. I've purchased Saddleback leather wallets in the past, was not impressed.

    I'm beginning to realize this now at the age of 25.
    Up until college, I've been a regular at the Walmart and Dollar stores.
    However, now that I make my own money and have the freedom of choice, I cannot go back to that lifestyle.
    In addition to value, I gain such pleasure from using fine products, almost to the point where I feel bursts of exstacy.
    Some will never take the time to recognize the concept of value, and I truly feel sorry for them.
