Stevie Wonder Likes Seydel Harmonicas, NAMM 2012

  • Stevie Wonder performs an extensive trial of Seydel Harmonicas at the Seydel Booth at NAMM 2012. He was impressed with the tone of the stainless steel reeds. He described them as being "brighter". These reeds have also been described as providing a "stronger" tone and significantly greater durability. The increased longevity offers an economical trade-off to the increased cost of these reeds. Long term users of stainless steel reeds easily justify the greater cost by having reduced need for re-tuning and maintenance, and actual less cost over time compared to brass and bronze reeds.

    I was surprised at some of the "mindless" comments about Stevie. He 's been playing since his early teens, is a natural and also a musical genius.

      Actually, Stevie has been playing the Harmonica/harp since he was about 5yrs old, as well as the piano,drums & organ . It is said, that he had masterd all of those instruments by the time he was 8yrs old .

    I must admit, I hesitated buying my first Seydel Session Steel harmonica because of the price, but the first time I played it, I was like, "WOW!!!" This baby darn near plays itself! Well worth it! I've since bought almost a full set (including a few half-valved by PT Gazell). I absolutely LOVE my Seydel harmonicas!

    lol If that was me I would have just given it to him. If Stevie Wonder tells you he likes the sound of your stuff, you give it to him. If you're lucky enough, maybe he'll play it on stage, there's hardly any better publicity.
    EDIT : looks like they did ?

    Even during the GDR period (i.e. former communist East Germany), Seydel (based in Klingenthal, Saxony) managed to make excellent instruments, despite material shortages etc. - and their current offerings are amazing! I (like Stevie) have been playing Hohner Chromonicas for decades, but I also own a few GDR-era Seydel "Bandmaster" chromatics (among them my only chromatic in Bb), and I absolutely love them!

    Stevie, I believe plays a Hohner Super 20 Chromonica since he was Little Stevie. Seydel makes the oldest harmonicas. They were before Hohner.

    I'm sure Stevie could make even an inexpensive Swan Chromatic sound great, in fact he could make what ever brand he chooses to play, sound great. I bought my Swan 16 hole Chromatic for about $80.00. I use it mostly for practicing. Would love to attend a Harp convention like this one.

  • @nvjharmonica
    @nvjharmonica 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I'm so prejudice towards Hohner that I'm scared to try another brand, I guess I need to try something new. I've been playing the 16 hole chromatic by Hohner Chromonica for over 45 years now.

    I like the stronger, louder sound also but mine immediately went out of tune after playing overbends on it - so the comparably high cost wasn't worth it in my opinion. I had one made by Voggenreiter Publishing company a 5th of the money but played it for a hundred times longer :-)

    • @ChromaticHarp
      @ChromaticHarp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re not supposed to play overbends on chromatic! In fact iverbends don’t work on Chrom! The seybels have stainless steel reeds which are very hard to make go out of tune! Duh!

  • @Rnav4712
    @Rnav4712 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been told that stainless steel reeds last forever. With all of my brass reed Hohner Chromatics being broken, I need to check out Suzuki or Seydel Chroms.

    And as for dude at the end who says this is Stevie's brand - not it's not - I believe the biggest solos in harp sales history are performed by Stevie on a Larry Adler signature and a Super Chromonica

    • @pabslondon
      @pabslondon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      PSALMSOFSONGS the button sharpens the note by a half step. You can play chromatically hence chromatic harmonica

    • @johnmosesbrowning1855
      @johnmosesbrowning1855 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A chromatic harmonica has got a button that "swaps" the canal of airflow to different reeds. A normal blues harmonica with ten wholes like the famous marine band has twenty reeds, ten that sound when you blow out and ten others that sound when you suck air in. So in theory you have twenty different sounds (the great blues players get more out with technics like bending and overblowing). Most chromatic harmonica have got 48 reeds that are sounded by blowing or drawing air trough twelve holes, the button swaps the canal to get to the other set of reeds. These 48 reeds cover most sounds that most players in the west need. Then there are also chromatics with 16 holes, giving you 64 sounds. And then there is all sorts of crazy stuff in the world of harmonicas.

    • @burntchickennugget8142
      @burntchickennugget8142 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnmosesbrowning1855 well, unless you have a different tuning, a diatonic will have 19 sound since 3 blow and 2 draw are the same note- that of course is without counting all them 'hidden' notes

      I couldn't stop staring at everyone trying to get his photo. It's just kinda disrespectful I think. He may be famous but he's there to play this harmonica and buy one and people are taking photographs from really weird angles because they're desperate. Who would they even show it too? Like, "hey dude I was at NAMM and I saw Stevie Wonder playing harmonica, take a look at this terrible photo where he isn't facing me,"
      Weirdos

    • @Wistbacka
      @Wistbacka 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brodie Wilson
      Hello.
      Can you please tell me why it is disrespectful to take a photo of a celebrity (or any other interesting person) on a public event? It's not like Stevie is in his own house or trying to be private (fuck you, Paparazzis), nor is it that this person does anything humiliating or stupid or is hurt or is dying, so I don't see the issue here. I would most definetly take a picture and even film this small performance. I'm pretty sure even you would bring out the camera if you meet one of your idols.
      And a bad picture is still better than no picture if documenting a once in a life time event.
      Peace!

      @Se7enthWard 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well let's just say you're a popular media entity and you head down to the store to get milk and people are taking photos of you. You're in a public place, does that make it okay then? No not really.
      They could have at least waited and had the common sense to ask him for a photo instead of standing in the background stalking him while he is trying to get some information on a product.

      gimme a fucking break he's one of the worlds most famous musicians at a fucking music convention for petes sake. where do celebrities NOT have their picture taken? and if you're a big fan of someone, guess what, you're probably partly responsible for the good things that his celebrity have brought him, and if you want to take a picture, go ahead. i do not consider this to be a private function, do you? were you expecting the hall to fall into a respectful silence? you and brodie should hang out, when you get done blowing each other you can talk about how unaffected by celebrity you are! congratulations, now wipe your chin.
