Honestly, quitting your job to work on your first ever game is a move that I wouldn't recommend. Especially since, what the hell are you gonna do after? The game industry is suffering. Real game designers get paid dog shit for very long hours and a lot of stress. Not to mention that out of all indie games, very, very few get any sort of commercial success. I’m not going to go into details. But thank you. This video has inspired me to do some thing I’ve been putting off for months. I’ll edit this comment in a few months or so
Hey Ponty, Just leaving this comment to say thank you. A year ago 'roughly' around now. I watched this video, I worked at a Internet company, slowly climbing ladders the works of a normal company job. after hearing many people talk about their prior lives before diving in and then hearing your own story, i decided to jump ship on my crappy internet company job, this year was incredibly hard but there was no moving forward in the comfort zone. Even though I lost my dog, all money and had to take up so many random part time jobs and side gigs I could find to stay afloat I finally managed to get a job in the video game industry, a thing I have wanted to do since I was a child, In my city they are pretty damn rare and I wanted to say thanks, without your motivation I doubt i would have jumped ship on that internet job a year ago, and even though it has been one of the most uncomfortable, damn hard and punishing years, a year later I finally am a video game artist that I can say proudly. Thanks for the push Ponty! your awesome.
Honestly, this is what I needed. I've been in a somewhat comfortable job for the last 5 years. It's not the dream at all and is what you said the "progress" spot. For the last 5 years I've been trying to start my own business, working on the side in cinematography, teaching kids how to sword fight, and now I'm learning game development. I think after watching this video, and I could be wrong, but I realize my dream has never been a specific career or comfortable place in life. My dream is to develop ideas and dream like ideas. Thank you for this video, I hope you enjoy doing what you are doing and that it goes well for you. Good job.
This motivation is just what I needed. I was suicidal for the last 7 months and didn't know what I am going to do whit my life, everything failed and wasn't working out. I understood some things from your video, and as a matter of fact, I have started to learn unreal engine (i am a programmer) but I don't see myself going in that way. I will start my business as I wanted to and see where it take me!
This video has completely changed me. The part about being in the comfort zone hit me hard because I finally realized that was exactly what I was doing. I never even bothered applying to other jobs because I've had something really convenient and cozy, but after hearing you I suddenly realized that this is not even what I really want to do. I've just been doing it because it's simple and stable. I've had lots of dreams for projects I've wanted to do on my own and more complex jobs to transition into, but this comfort has made me lazy. I've had lots of free time to work on them too, but I never did because I thought "why even bother trying to do something else when I have this comfortable job where I don't have to change or try to learn something new." This doesn't mean I'm going to quit, and I don't think you have to quit to do this (although I have mad respect for people like you who do), but this video has made me realize that I actually need to start striving for more. My desires for exploring new areas have arrived, and I feel like I'm back in the discomfort zone. I no longer feel satisfied with what I have and I've started to work hard every day after my job at 5, and eventually I know I'll be able to transition to a position I really want, or even better, start my own successful venture. Thank you for making this video!
This is actually making me think. It goes against what I've been told growing up (which I'm still doing) but it makes sense! Im still trying to process this.
Hey Ponty! You inspired me to start my GameDev journey (DevLogs included) at the start of the covid-times when I was out of work. I'm also using UE4 and I have to say - this is one of the most satisfying journeys I've begun and I'm committed to seeing my project through to the end! Thanks as always for your great videos, and best of luck to you.

You go Ponty! This is the kind of honesty and vulnerability that keeps me coming back here. Not to mention, lights a fire under my behind to go pursue what I've been putting off. Keep up the good work, hope to see more of your videos and if you don't already have this out on steam or something for us to Wishlist, you should probably consider that!

I've say some words for somebody inspired by Pontypants. Behind this decision there MUST be many hard works and learning everyday. You cannot just follow you dream without do something. The "risky" is only about the decision itself. It's "safe" because keep learning and keep making things. And this thing, is what you loved.
@@ron4212 Not exactly true. GTA 5 made enough money to pay EVERY SINGLE ONE of their employees 1 million dollars . We need to wake up and work together against these huge companies. That is the problem.
Sir, thank you a lot for these words. I'm right now going trought the same process of making my own game, and I'm diving in, full time, full dedication because the idea for it has been in my head for the past 6 years, and I never made anything out of it, not believing I could do it with the conditions that I have (I'm brazillian, and with our currency at an all time low value, I simply can't afford even a mid tier machine). But I decided I'm gonna do it anyway, even if I need to get a second job to pay for a PC... So thank you for this video! You brought me energy to keep on going.
Real fan here! I love all of your videos. They are highly addictive, and now I understand why, you worked with: MOVIES! Great moral lesson too, I agree with what you said about the comfort zone, the purest truth! It is the opposite of progress, evolution and almost always distances you from your dreams. Regarding the lives, it might be nice to open a Twitch or here on TH-cam to chat live with the followers and produce a little bit, but I agree that it can be a little tedious and I wouldn't be engaging for a long time, maybe a test can speak better? Much success in this new journey. I'm sure you will achieve even more success and satisfaction!
I’m a software dev who literally was made redundant and you have inspired me with this video. It’s a fresh start and not a bad thing. Thanks man. I have my own idea for a game. So it’s cool watching you even though my game is very different. Hopefully one day I can play yours and you can play mine.
I'm a Web Developer learning UE4. Whenever I feel doubts about myself or I'm worrying too much about if it's really worth investing so much time in learning Game Dev, I step by into one of your videos and get a motivation refill haha. Thanks man. Hope I can play your game soon!
You're the man Ponty! Also you really should livestream the whole process. People will learn a lot from your live mistakes and experimentation, and you can still do the bite-sized versions to upload here
Bruh, im so proud of you, i am a young developer as well, im only 15 and in South Africa with nobody to teach me, I learnt from you today, i'm so inspired and im working on my own game as well. Thank you Ponty
Fantastic way of explaining the "Comfort Zone". It's always sad when people deny others dreams, like "You're never going to be Da Vinci" and "There's only one Stephen Spielberg". Heck, the world doesn't need another one of them, it needs You. You're unique and only You can make what you'll make. Perhaps not everyone is successful, but I guarantee that far more geniuses have been stopped from creating something Great by people who think this way and who deny their dreams.
We're in exactly the same boat! Quit my job last March doing animation/compositing/vfx at a major animation studio to work full time on my own game. Living the dream! :)
Congrats man! This change sounds so exciting. I know you were a bit unsure about the livestreams, but I actually think they’re a really good idea. This is because, the moments where you get stuck with a certain mechanic or trying to do a certain thing (which is bound to happen with all game dev) you can get instant responses to your problem, instead of waiting for a video to release before you get people’s suggestions. That’d speed up development, plus it’s entertaining for people tuning in as they can help you problem solve. Anyway wishing all the best for you mate! Good luck!
Thanks for this video. I have so many thoughts on this topic, but I am not an eloquent speaker. In short, I love that you are following your dreams despite all the negativity and doubt that comes from other people and sometimes yourself. Don't let the fear of failure keep you from being happy!
That talking about our own dreams reminded me Griffith´s monolog from my favorite manga Berserk. "While many can pursue their dreams in solitude, other dreams are like great storms blowing hundreds even thousands of dreams apart in their wake. Dreams breathe life into men, and can cage them in suffering. Men live and die by their dreams, but long after they've been abandoned, they still smolder deep in men's hearts. Some see nothing more than life and death. They are dead! For they have no dreams."
Thanks so much for this update video! The pointers and they way you explained things made me realize what I want in life and that I shouldn’t “play the safe route”

INSPIRING!!! Coming from one solo game developer to another this is an awesome post. Keep up the good work and we’ll keep on supporting you!
Nice vid
Definitely!
I've say some words for somebody inspired by Pontypants. Behind this decision there MUST be many hard works and learning everyday. You cannot just follow you dream without do something. The "risky" is only about the decision itself. It's "safe" because keep learning and keep making things. And this thing, is what you loved.
YOU QUIT THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD TO BECOME A FULL TIME GAME DEVELOPER! So worth it
Game development is one of, if not, the least lucrative of all careers in CS. Its an awful industry.
I can tell this is good
This whole video makes me respect you way more, I now see you as a wise man aiming for success. Continue what you're doing!
You should try looking at Ryan layley games, he makes tutorials I personally follow
Really got me thinking. Goodluck and i will be following along.
"quitters have a dream, the rest is dreamless" -pontypants
You have our entire support sir and Godspeed on your endeavour. You are an inspiration for many if you haven't noticed yet.
POGCHAMP
Thanks!! This video was really helpful!! I've been on procrastination zone for weeks and your channel helped me to work on my games. You are a legend!
Well, lots of people who played it "safe" kinda don't have a job because of the pandemy.
So that's a good moral.
As a supporter/advocate of progress and beginning that life from outside the comfort zone! Get after it! Congratulations! I’ll be subbing and liking.
and then your game flops and you have only a box of crackers to your name
you never know that might actually happen but hopefuly not
true
If your game flops, you start again.
@@PoshPennies I mean its not that easy
@@PoshPennies but yeah
100 % with you man! Good luck with this new adventure, I'm sure you're gonna crush it!
That's a big step in your game dev career, I like that! I wish you the best for what's coming. Love your videos.
Congrats on the decision. Good luck and will continue to watch you going! You have done very good so far!
So proud man, the thing about progress outside the comfort zone is great, thanks for the inspiration, man. Keep up the good work!
Huuuuge props to you man. Been following the channel since you started the game, and I'm excited for what's in store for you going forward!
This guy is really intertaining definitely love his content been watching for a couple days now definitely one of my new favorites to tune into
At the start I was like "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT" but at the end I became very motivated and I found point in life. Nice video!
I was here supporting when you started. I'm also chasing my dream. Good luck man. I'll pray for you man!
Thank you, after I watched this video I went and bought the unity course :) I wanna give it my all to also pursue a dream ^^
Such truth, Ponty. You got this.
YYYYEEEEEEEEES! Thanks Mike! :D
🥰🥰🥰
if you enjoy and truly have a passion for what you do. it will ultimately impact the result in a positive way. I believe in you man!
Here since 5k. I already knew this game is gonna pop off, watching every vid. Congrats bro!
Respect man, I did the same thing, I quit my "safe" job, working on my project now.
Subscribed, let's see who reach their goal first.
🥰
