As a musician I am always amazed how the musicians Bowie has manage to get his material over in such a perfect way, and mostly better than the studio versions .
Love this concert. Gail Ann Dorsey , the bald chick on guitar. is one of the best bassists of all time. I'm surprised she's not on bass in this song. She is on most everything else. She was his bassist from 1995 to his death. India, if you haven't done Bowie's Lazarus , please do, it is his farewell to his fans. He was in such pain, dying of cancer , and still, he got it done. Through it all , he remained in character. The whole Black Star album is fantastic. If you want to see the finished story of Major Tom, react to the song Black Star. It's the closing of Major Tom's story, and it's really out there, a pure Bowie masterpiece. When you realize he was telling us in those songs that his own death was eminent, and very close at hand, you realize what a master of the craft he was. People around him during those final working weeks, say that he was so frail, so tired, and so close, that it's amazing he was able to push through. The fact that he not only did that, but wrote and performed some of the most incredible music of our time will leave you speechless. I will promise you, you will be touched deeply by the Lazarus video. You will cry. I think most of us did. He passed away 3 days after he released the video.
I grew up listening to David Bowie. He always seemed to be one or two steps ahead of the music trends. Every few years he would reinvent himself and his sound.
Major Tom has practically become a whole musical mythology. Revisted in several songs by Bowie and other artists like Peter Schilling in Major Tom (Coming Home)
I really got into listening while growing up in the 80s. Bowie was such an influence like Prince, Queen etc. His Lets Dance, China Girl were my favs. His role in Labyrint was amazing
This performance, and the whole concert, is perfect in so many ways. But the best, to me anyway, is Absolute Beginners. The vocals, especially the high harmonies against Bowie's strong emotive voice, always slay me. Still miss ya' David.
David was from my part of the world and is still very much missed - a true national treasure. One of the really amazing things about him was that he was a great family man as well as an icon. You would think given he led the full rock star lifestyle his kids would be pretty screwed up too. But if you ever meet Duncan Jones (formerly known as Zowie), the film director, he is just about the nicest, down-to-earth guy you could ever hope to meet. RIP David.
Changes was the first Bowie song I remember and I was hooked from then on. I watched his career from then on to the very end. There will never be another. Fun fact - he learned to play the cello for the movie "The Hunger".
India, yes he brought up Major Tom. Also you didn't notice he has two different color eyes. One is blue the other is brown caused from an eye injury. I've had the privilege of seeing him live three times. Twice in a 60,000 seat stadium where the Patriots play and then once in Washington DC in a smaller arena of 15,000 people. I've loved his music since Ziggy Stardust and thin white Duke days! Check him out as Ziggy!
Still miss Bowie. This is an updated to the original, but he was always up to keeping his old songs fresh. Ashes to Ashes is one of the many songs to reference Major Tom. The fallow ups to this and Space Oddity is Hello Space Boy, and then finally Black Star's video makes Bowie's final call out to Tom before his passing away.
Bowie always surrounded himself with excellent musicians. He had Stevie Ray Vaughn as a guitarist for a short time and shortly after Stevies' career took off.Stevie played on Let's Dance.
Oh this is only part of the journey with Major Tom. You'll find him again in Hallo Spaceboys (best version live with Nine Inch Nails). He makes his final appearance in Blackstar, released on Bowie's 69th birthday days before his death. Bowie is a legend. I just found your channel and watched your Bowie reactions. Sister, this man gave almost 50 years to rock and roll. You need to do more Bowie.
A very funky sequel to Space Oddity..... good pick on this video. BBC live. Bowie rocks! Great band with Mike Garson on piano and Earl Slick on guitar.
This was about 1999-2000. Love Bowie💜 Yes this is the 2nd song about Major Tom. Next try Life on Mars. 💥You won’t regret it. Bowie was a genus & very funny. 🔥
Thank you for this! Bravo!!!! You did the most accurate reaction and glad you are true to his bass! Yours.. not whatever you read! It had some truth to it but eeh! Close enough! Thats the fun of Bowie...leaves it to interpretation! He said he got the video idea from a dream...and if Im not mistaken that is his real Mom. It changes so Im not sure is why! I love how he mashs up the 2 and continues the Major Tom saga! Bowie cleaned up nice! I went to Tower of Philadelphia in early 2000's to see him in concery..12 rows back though known to not have a bad seat! What a ride that was!! No one was a stranger there, he sung a series of his old songs to his current! The lighting was unbelievable and the sound is matchless better than his recordings at maximum volume at that! And of course we all felt we were in his song! Fun fact...He said his bassist Gayle Dorsey (sp) Philly is her home town there! What a ride yes?! Again thank you! Like and sub'd!⚡🌠🕊
That was sweet. Bowie looked relaxed. The band was awesome. Might be the same band from the time Bowie performed for an episode of VH1 Storytellers in 1999. I wonder how many lucky people that venue held. I remember hearing this song on the radio back in 1980. It sounded super fresh but it fit in well with Peter Gabriel "Games without Frontiers" and the Talking Heads "Once in a Lifetime". Watch the official video when you can, with all the colors skewed and Bowie as the operatic clown and the backup singers looking like something out of Kafka, it was truly ground breaking.
First time hearing a song or acquainting oneself with an artists material it's recommended do the studio version first, then when you hear live versions you know what's been improvised or changed or maybe not played up to standard. Also this is the sequel to Space Oddity.
David always looked young to me maybe just a good life or maybe his love Imen saw him a ton of times first time in " 74'' in Boston Garden wow we're all getting old David & Freddy you both are miss badly !!
This was such a great show, live at the BBC. You might want to check out "This is not America" and "Stay". Both feature Earl Slick on guitar just blowin up the joint.
I have always loved David Bowies music.ty for this song. A reaction i wish you would do is, Jessie J, singing "Purple Rain", " I have Nothing", "I will always love you"
Your analysis were spot on! A song about David Bowie's drug abuse. "Time and again I tell myself I'll stay clean tonight, but these little green wheel keep following me - OH, NO not again".
I've been a huge Bowie fan since I was a kid. If I had to pick one song to show you what is so special about Bowie I'd recommend you watch the Life On Mars video. A couple years back, Elon Musk (the CEO of Tesla) launched a rocket with one of his cars into space with a dummy dressed as an astronaut in the drivers seat and the song Life On Mars playing on the radio. Sounds crazy, but it's true. Look it up. So you could say Life On Mars is (one of the) first song ever played in space, Actually, a real astronaut made a video of him singing Space Oddity while up in space, so Bowie has two songs (that I know of) that were actually played beyond earths atmosphere.
Pfft. That's the choice an American raised on radio would make. The true Bowie connoisseur knows that the sophisticated choice is Never Let Me Down. No wait...I mean, Tin Machine II. Damn it! What was it? Pin Ups? Hmm...no...Tonight? Yeah, that's the....no. Fuck it. Young Americans is a good one-off experiment, but it pales next to Station to Station or Low. Or Scary Monsters. Or Ziggy. Or Humpty Dumpty. I mean, Hunky Dory. And Outside. And Buddha of Suburbia. And...and...and...
The way I heard it: Back in the day, another artist wrote and released a song continuing the Major Tom story (Peter Schilling?). Bowie hated it, and felt that the song missed his original intent so much that he wrote Ashes to Ashes to clarify what Space Oddity was about to him. Bowie envisioned a junkie, overdosing and giving up on life and used floating off into outer space as allegory. Ashes to Ashes continues the story and offers the lyric "Ashes to Ashes, fun to funky, we know Major Tom's a junkie. Floating out in heavens high, and hitting an all time low".
David Bowie started his cocaine habit during his first character Ziggy Stardust in the early 70's. By the mid 70's he was almost living off cocaine. This is song is reflection of this time as he was trying overcome his addiction.
This song is about the fall of idols. Major Tom was a hero but couldn't take it, and fell from the stars down into the pit of addiction. Even our heroes - especially our heroes - are just human.

David Bowie was interesting? Thanks for clearing that up.
