I remember as a kid sitting in the backseat of one of these my " father " owned going on family trips. I also remember the red lights flashing in the back glass from the police stopping us for speeding too.

All 1959 GM makes were designed around the Buick doors on two door cars and the Buick front doors on the four door cars! They give credit to the Buick design for the Cadillac fins being so high because of the rearward taper!

Once had a 1959 Super 88 like this, but a 4 door blue and white. I called it the Starship Enterprise and it had a instrument warning light that was Green, and when you started the engine the green light would come on and say "cold", then after a brief time the green light went out as the thermostat had done it's job and the engine was warm enough to drive. The only good warning light I've ever seen. One of my favorite cars. Thanks for the memories.

Hi, Lou! Before there were wide-body planes, there was this wide-body Olds, and the way the headlamps are set far apart has a way of making it look even wider than it already is (although not eight feet wide as Frank says)! While it does look like a rocket ship, it was actually the most conservatively styled of the five GM brands. GM was going for the rocket ship look as a reaction to Chrysler's "Forward Look" cars of 1957. One of the most interesting features on these cars was the ribbon speedometer. Up to 35 mph the ribbon was green, then from there to 65 it was amber, and beyond 65 it was red. Would have been interesting to watch had Frank taken you along for the ride.
Olds capped off the fabulous Fifties in just the right way! I'm not surprised that Frank gets a lot of wows out on the road!

"The most conservatively styled of the five GM brands": The '59 Cadillac Coupe de Ville - especially if on Sabre Spokes - will always be the wildest with those cartoony fins / the '59 Buick is probably the best expression of what GM were aiming for - the dramatic canted planes of those nose-to-tail fins really nail the whole concept of the "finned automobile" / but in the end, I think that of the five - the more restrained styling of the Oldsmobile actually makes it beautiful, especially in side or rear three-quarter view. I have a 98 Scenicoupe with the 394ci motor, which looks even better on it's longer 126" wheelbase than the 123" 88 model which Frank has here. The 98s have nicer tail-lights, better-looking wheel-trims, plus a chrome trim around the rear wheel-arches, which all lift it's appearance above the 88s. The fascia and interior styling in general, is easily the best that year. I plan to do my 98 Coupe in a single colour all over - probably a deep metallic purple - and fit either chromed Kelsey-Hayes wires or a set of Sabre Spokes. With a pair of swept chrome aerials on the rear deck, it will look the business....

I have a 1959 Dynamic 88 Holiday Coupe, the poor boy's model with the 371 engine. 1959 was the first year that Olds offered the 394 engine for the Super 88 and 98. Lee Petty won the Daytona 500 that year in an Oldsmobile as well. I don't think there is a bad line on the these cars. On my car's paint job, the body is a pewter color, and the fin itself is the only part that is painted a slightly darker color. The trunk and roof are the same color as body; it's very subtle but it sets the car off. Thanks for sharing this car. And I didn't know that this car technically has the longest fin. I always gave that award to the 59 Cadillacs. Gettings from San Diego.

With the seat all the way back...it was still in my lap and close to my chest. Although I am 6ft2 240...

Loved the focus on detail like the fins & exhausts, it's those aspects of your videos that along with the commentary from the owners make them so enjoyable. Im an Olds enthusiast to boot.
The 59' was a great year.
One cool feature it had was instead of the standard speedometer needle on most cars, the 59 olds had a rotating cylinder that had different colors for higher speeds. It would turn from green to orange to red the faster you went.
Not a very amazing feature by todays standards but was just one example of how Oldsmobile was always trying new innovative things in their cars.

Hey, the song you're referring to is Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88" produced in 1951. Bill Haley's and Chuck Berry's songs were merely additional recordings of the song. Fun fact: Rocket 88 is widely considered to be the first "Rock and Roll" song recorded.

First new car my brother bought and in late 67 I bought a Delta 88 Custom Sport just when the 68's hit the showroom floor. I have been trying to find out for years what the "S" meant in the transmission sequence. My 67 with buckets had the shifter on the centre console. Never understood what it actually did other than it definitely improved the acceleration. Can you explain this for me?

Hi James Oldman, I have no idea what the "S" means, however many a Viewer has knowledge. Thank you for viewing and sharing the memories of this one for you, Lou

My 1969 Olds Delta 88 owner's manual said S stood for Super. It was for starting in second gear. PRNDSL was on the shift quadrant and other makes used a 2 there instead of S, which made more sense.

car needs at minimum, front shocks. '59 Bonneville would ALSO have fron-to-back fins.. a paint scheme thing makes then differ in that repect. identical cars with identical features. the Chevrolet below, and cadillac above, have some panels that stray from what this 88 and the bonneville exhibit dimensionally. '58-62 cars always make me wonder what everybody was thinking (or NOT thinking.)

I grew up,in So. California and I never saw or heard of Bellflower pipes. It’s nice but for me, those sear covers would have to go!

Lou; what a great car to do a video/story on !! I swear, these cars of the late 1950's looked a mile long ! The owner could ace those leopard-skin seat covers, though. Kinda gay, if you ask me. ANOTHER ONE WELL DONE !!! I didn't even know these videos were done in Illinois. That's where I live !!

Those exhaust pipes are illegal where I live because of bad taste.

Hi BobEckert56, If you don't like them, that's ok, there's plenty of other cars to view on the Channel I'm sure you'll enjoy, Lou

Lou Costabile Just joking Lou! Your channel is one of the gold standards. The reason the 59 GM cars were styled the way they were was completely due to the brilliant Virgil Exner at Chrysler.
