    great info as always, when i know what type of light i want or what look i want i find that its easy to then get the image/look i want, The hard part is having an object or idea then trying to think what type of light i want or what will be best.

    Great summary as always. Here's a somewhat related topic on which I'd love to hear your thoughts in a future video: I always try to make photos that are well lit and well designed, but what I often hear -- especially from social media coordinators -- is "We don't want the pictures to look too slick or fancy because we are going for authenticity." So what goes into making photos of a high technical standard that still look "real" or even maybe a little grungy?

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Yes it's a hard thing to achieve 'real' images that are actually carefully crafted, i'd say the key component especially in lifestyle shots is the right balance of artificial and natural light, the control of the colour and lighting direction.

      Very true! Before I went digital, in 2008 there was a guy who was shooting models with the most amazing light. He was using old White Lightening strobes and old Sunpak and Metz flashes, but he understood the 3-4 lighting set up and got amazing results even I can't duplicate!

      @@iunderstanphotography2780 see the work of some so-called "Strobists" like David Hobby for instance, they were and still are able to create interesting light set-ups with nearly all kind of strobes or speedlites even with cheap and elder second-hand gear, I still use my old Metz and Nikon speedlites from the analog era

    Well idk. I've never shot anything with speedlites and I've signed up to learn more about it as it seemed exactly like the info I needed. It's been the most crazy study ride in a week I've ever had in my whole life, and I can frikkin guarantee this man knows what he's talking about. I've learned so much in just a little amount of time, which is exactly what I needed to make a photosession happen with no studio and no risks associated with going somewhere to take pics. The most expensive thing I've purchased this week was the profoto stripbox to make a rim lit portrait and yeah it performs great if you know what to expect. It can also be absolutely useless if you use it wrong. Everything else is just a cheap chinese stuff but you CAN make it work for you. I also have white walls at home so I can either use them or cover them up. Man you can just use a piece of paper as a reflector or diffuser if you know the basics and it'll improve or ruin your pic. You CAN jump from zero to hero if you just learn the basics and start experimenting. Hell you can do a good portrait with just one single speedlite if you know how to! Thanks Karl! I needed this knowledge asap, and your website and courses are like a ... idk, it's the most efficiently compressed knowledge you need, yet Karl makes those tutorials with no cuts at all, he just does it in one shot, sometimes even live, and everything he says there is relevant and important yet easy to understand even for a complete homegrown newbie with some 12 year old camera and a pair of speedlites(got the second one just recently while planning for the session).
    He doesn't teach you how to take this or that pic the best way, it's his way he shows there. He teaches you on how to use this or that tool and the tricks associated with using these tools. The rest is up to you. This is exactly what I needed to rocketstart to the artificial light photography galaxy.
    If you're out of time, this IS the course you want! After that just go and experiment and you'll learn on the way.

    Hi Karl, I really appreciate all the videos you made. I’m learning tons from them.
    I actually have a question though. How does the amount of light affect the shadow? For example, if I change the distance of a light from the subject by 1 stop, but compensate it by changing the strength (amount) of light by 1 stop, what difference does it make to the shadow or the image? Would it change the harshness of light or light fall off? Since I don’t have necessary gears with me, I keep simulating this within my head and some drawings, but I couldn’t come up with the answer.
    Anyway, thank you so much for your hard work!! Hope you have awesome holidays.

    When shooting a model or product with a light close to them does it end up in the shot and you crop it out or do you choose a lens to compose the image without the light in frame?
    I have no clue as I mostly do wildlife photography but it looks like in some of your videos that you're set up where it looks like the light will be in the frame.
    I do enjoy the videos, I'm trying to learn as much as I can about all types of photography even the things I'll never shoot probably.

    Question about lighting and portraiture, specifically, if the job entails hair models from a salon. It is portraiture, but the customer wants the character of the cut to be represented, with the additional appeal of the model to add to the overall presentation of the image. Many years ago, I worked on a photo shoot with a salon and the models were a mix of real models willing to acquire a new look, as well as hair clients who had spectacular hair, received a great cut and were willing to step up for a photoshoot. The question has to do with any extra lighting you would suggest to help fulfill the needs of the client's product.. how would you approach this kind of a job?
