    While it might seem this way, the truth is that when the canvas is mostly empty then the limited paint they see defines the image. But the more you paint, the less you notice individual brush strokes. Nothing defines you permanently. You should really look at the life of Benjamin Franklin. He accomplished a lot and was not defined by any one thing but known for it all.

      It is true that some things can be covered with fresh paint. Certainly the point is to keep painting the canvas the way you want. That means being proactive with your life, and taking responsibility for your vision.

Now if start new things, I approach them in "this will add this and this ability to my skillset" way. If the skill is not relevant now and has doubtful dividends in the future, I don't do it. I usually do not post comments, but I think I should do it this time. I am a recent Ph.D. in computer science from México. When people read my resume, they usually say something like: 'what a mess have you done with your life.'
    I have worked in logistics, I have been a professor, I have been a researcher... I have lived in 13 different cities. But I am more than that, I am also a runner (I enjoy running marathons), and I am also a poet and a writer.
    I have so many interests, so I hate to be described with a single word (engineer, researcher, runner, or writer). I am a human, and my life is a beautiful mess that no one understands but me.
    In the book The Idiot, Dostoievski distinguishes between practical and original people (something I recall from your canvas analogy). The narrator of the story asserts that a practical man is one who lacks originality or initiative. As a result, it is much more prestigious to be a stable worker than an inventor or a genius, for being a stable worker is a sign of successful and quiet life.
    Most of my Ph.D. thesis was related to combinatorial optimization and data science. Now, I am on the path of learning the technical aspects of data engineering (after four years of theoretical science, I want to get involved in practical applications). Your channel has been helping me a lot. I encourage you to keep with your channel as long as you enjoy it.
    Greetings from México, Felipe de la Rosa Rivera.

      Hi there Felipe, thanks so much for your comment (it means even more to me, given that you don't typically coment on yt!) I can completely relate to what you're saying. I don't know if you're familiar with the personalty typology called MBTI, but what you said seems to me like a distinction between intuitive types (who spend more time juggling concepts, ideas, and thinking about the future) vs sensing types (who focus on the surroundings, the tangible, and the "real" things). I actually haven't read The Idiot, but I love Dostoyevsky, so the book lands on my list! All the best to you, and I hope I'll see you around here!

    Hi Karolina, I just saw this video as a first of you. (Popped up in my recommended)
    And I totally agree with the Painting analogy and as you said it's not other peoples job to see your finished painting. But I disagree with the fear of putting down a brushstroke. Sometimes you show people work that you are currently on or share your Ideas and they just won't get it. And they might even say don't do it, because of there own experiences with you. But you wan't to have that red spot in your painting because it adds some texture to it. Then do it. Like in a painting life happens and nobody will stop it. But you are the one who decides how many white spaces to fill. So in my opinion but down as much brushstrokes planned or unplanned, but never be scared of putting strokes on your canvas, because then in the end your piece will have empty spaces. And the worst part would be to have an unfinished painting when looking back.
    That's just my opinion which I hope you get something out of it even if it's a, that's just dumb to think like that. :)

    • @karolinasowinska
      @karolinasowinska  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely agree with you - one should not be afraid to put brushstrokes on the canvas. Like you said, people might not get the full picture yet. But most importantly, in my opinion, one should paint according to one's vision, and not feel constraint by what's been painted so far! :)

    Ignore and overcome!
    I'm 35 chef, at the beginning of a career change to IT. Moved to part_time and joined Uni this year. Some people around you don't want you to better yourself because that reminds them of their own failures and that makes them uncomfortable projecting it on you in the form of Judgements. They are trying to push you back in your place so they can keep feeling comfortable. These people are selfish, the best way to deal with them is to ignore and outperform them. They will talk, you just ignore and keep working, over time you will end up in a far better position in every way than them and they will have nothing left to talk about.

    I get it. I want to get a phd in economics....but I don't want to be an economist. I just like economics but professionally I want to build things. I've been learning data engineering and I could also see myself as data scientist/analyst. But right now in the field I want to go into (health) there is so much more important work to be done in engineering and laying that foundation down in terms of data interoperability. I think learning how to communicate and storytelling will allow you to craft different messages and allow others to see your canvas a bit better and make sure they don't put too many limitations in your path as you move forward. For me, I one of my first steps to build some wealth through property to allow me the intellectual and financial freedom to paint whatever canvas I choose down the road.

If you will paint your canvas in the forest free from others and stop caring how others rate you they'll judge you either way. This was an interesting take. I'm making the presumption that the "canvas" is tied to the concept of identity, which is something I've been struggling lately to conceptualize in philosophy. I also presume that this identity is scoped more into a "professional identity" rather than a personal one, but these are my takes from the video so I may be wrong. As a developer/data-scientist myself who's side-company is a completely different industry, I've found that different professional groups naturally classify me one way or another, and friends who I don't talk to about work much even still classify me as if I was still a builder like I was for a few years.
    However I've noticed that I see myself completely differently, and have found that human nature's natural inclination to classify and label people and things into group is something I've used to my professional advantage while jobhunting. Especially for those of us who work more hands-on in tech, I think that everything I've done OUTSIDE of data science and software development is relatable TO data science and software development. Talking to job-hunting bootcamp grads really opened my eyes to this. Depending on my professional goals and situation, I just alter one of my past experiences as my central goal and relate other experiences to that. For example I can relate ETL architecture to real-life architecture or relate training an object-detection model to training sheep-dogs... or vice versa.
    Think about it like a project with a central file, lets say canvas.py. Canvas.py executes a function called `def paint(situation):` which pulls data from different files. For you these files might be youtuber.gpkg, data_science.kml, software_dev.json, data_engineer.yaml, or whatever other experience you have that might affect that painting. All you have to do is play with that "paint" function to render data from those files in different orders depending on that "situation" argument. By doing that, you define your own canvas to suit other peoples' need to classify you in a way that suits your own professional goals.
    Wish you all the best in narrowing down what kind of painting you want to make and go for it.

    • @karolinasowinska
      @karolinasowinska  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand what you're saying. You're able to display selected experiences as you please, to show exactly what others will appreciate in a given moment. That makes sense. In my metaphor I meant that if you don't have enough will, or enough vision for yourself, you won't know which way to go (or you won't know that you can run def paint(situation)). That's why it is so important to have that proactive approach which servers your goals!

  • @MRT-co1sd
    @MRT-co1sd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I understand what u saying. Yes, you should indeed not care about how people classify you one day they will come around when you show your true colours. Just be yourself. Take responsibilty for yourself. I know it's not easy to do but you could explain using the canvas to people who really want to understand u. By the way most western Abstract paintings are not really abstract or if someone want to call them abstract then they really are just abstract to randomness/meaningless.

But it's a classic fear of the future / fear of being judged (shame), fear of being trapped etc. Personally, meditation and reading Osho (years ago) helped me quite a lot not to really care about all that. In my experience, when they pigeonhole you at a job interview, what they're doing is just finding an excuse. Sometimes they already have the candidate that they're "looking for". That candidate might be a friend or a relative. Pigeonholing is an easy way to find a credible excuse to reject a competitive candidate that might have otherwise got the job. In a way, it's a compliment, as it means that they couldn't find anything that it's truly wrong with your CV or your interview. Also, if they're truly pigeonholing you, you might want to think twice if you really want to work for that person/company. A work environment like that obviously doesn't offer much in terms of exploration and/or professional development.

    I'm often asked in a job interview, "why do you want to work here"?
    That's a SETUP to put you in your place; your pigeon hole!
    I'm older and I know how to FLIP that script: I answer them, "I'm not entirely sure I do want to work for you".
    Now we're on an EQUAL setting.
    Another question I'm asked a lot is why I have so many jobs.
    They're trying to keep me under this label of a "tainted worker"; like my skills have diminished over the years.
    That's when I tell them that these jobs tried to PIGEON HOLE me and NEVER used my HIGHER level skills, so I left. Then I'll ask them if they would do the same to me too? 🤔
    I'm not very good at saying the BS people want to hear. It's not in my nature to paint rosy pictures for idiots.
    I'm still looking for a job after being without one for over a YEAR now. But I'm vowing to never take a job that's so far BELOW my skill level ever again. I'm avoiding the pigeon holes and TOXIC cultures, even if it means I have NO place to roost. The SKY is my limit.

    bascialy i think that my position is different: i hate people that relate your personality(?) only based on wich job you do, for example, are you a computer scentist? well you are a " nerd", with low friends and you dont spend your free time doing my same shit.
    basically poeple should work for their life and not living for work.
    so i dont care if you are a data scientist,a psicologyst or a doctor, i should be interested in you, like a human that have emotion, intereset and goal to achive in the future,that s all.
    that s why i like your video, not only for data science topics, on youtube ther are so many video about that, but i don t like everyone of them.
    ps sorry for my english ;)
    ciaoo :)

      Hah, don't worry, I'm being quite implicit with this whole painting metaphor!
