Not sure why you've always said you're not a colored pencil artist. You're as good as the very best ones I've seen on TH-cam! Wow, girl!! Beautiful drawings.
I bought these as my "practice color pencils" before I bought my large Prisma set, and I often use them now to extend my Prismas. I have not been disappointed. I enjoy how they perform and how they feel in my hand and on the paper. These feel and perform more like Faber Castell to me, although less pigmented, and less like Prisma, but their advertisement compares them to Prisma. They feel very different to me but in a good way. I get tired of the mushy texture of Prisma and often find myself just grabbing a handful of a compatible palette of Cezannes with coloring books and away I go. I do not have to sharpen them nearly as often as Prisma and that is a big plus for coloring books. They are nice and blend and layer well. Beautiful colors, and yes a few really close ones but that is good since there is no open stock. My only complaint as Lindsay said no open stock and no color names but I really really like them for a budget practice set.

Finally a review where the person has actually used the set before talking about it, thank you. I don't understand why people consider an unboxing + first look a review. That's not a review that's a first impression and people don't even sharpen the pencils before either. Btw your artwork is also phenomenal.
The castle art supplies pencils are $47 on Amazon and are a very pigmented set (however VERY waxy) 120 pencils, larger barrel than prisma color, and the leads are very sturdy. Beautiful colors!
Thank you 😊 I have made purchases based on your reviews and gifted them, the recipients have been very happy . You are such a talented artist. G'day from Australia ❤️
Wow Lindsay, your drawing of the bird with the green background is stunning!! It's so good, it looks like a real photograph out of a magazine. You did an awesome job with all the work you showed, but this bird is so true to life. I loved your review as well, thank you for the information and tips.❤️🌹
I got this set for $29.95 when Jerry's first sold them! I figured for a budget pencil and Jerry's does a great job getting such good deals for their "house brands" I use them interchangeably with the Brutfuner square pencils! It is fun when others ask my opinion about art supplies and I get to send them your way! My sister just says tell me what to buy! So I hope she checks you out too!

Beautiful work! I’m amazed those art samples were done with colored pencils cuz they look like a painting. You’re so good. TFS 🎨 (I, too, would want the 120 piece set of pencils.)

Great review. I always love seeing your art work because you do beautiful work. I know you loved the bird and he was gorgeous but the details on that strawberry are amazing. Thanks so much for sharing.
Your photos looked like still life ones, vivid and true to life. I may just give these a try, I do have the prisma tin with a whole lot of them, not sure of the count and just received my gamsol and paper stumps. I haven't messed with them yet....but I will! Thanks Lindsey!
Wow, watched this video because I'm looking for a good deal on colored pencils. Last night after watching I went on Jerry's Artarama and low and behold they were on sale for $44.99 for a set of 120. Great deal so I got them. Thanks for sharing!
This was great! I am so glad you are doing a tutorial on TH-cam and Critique Club. I have a huge set of Prisma colored pencils and have only ever used them for coloring books. You inspire me to create my own art and put those pencils back out on my table!
There's no shame in starting with coloring pages in terms of working with colored pencils (either purchased or images from online). It's not art. But then it never claims to be. Using coloring pages to practice technique, to how to blend and shade, using other media with them such as odorless MS along with them can be good practice. If doing so I would recommend using decent paper and print your own copies. If you have a scanner and there is an image you really like scan it and print it on better paper. It's not necessary to use the best paper. Even the paper from tablets cut to size. I'm not a professional, just somebody who dabbles from time to time. As an aside there is a segment of the scale model hobby that the kits are either sold as a digital format or published in book form. The primary media is cardstock and chipboard (the stuff on the back of a writing tablet). The digital ones are great because if you mess up. Just print another one. The same can apply to coloring pages you are practicing with
I’m really looking forward to the videos of the bird drawings; they both look terrific. Am enjoying my coloured pencils after last week’s 101, as you gave me a much clearer idea of what type of pencil to use for different purposes. Altogether, thank you twice over.
Thank you for the more detailed version of review on this set. It was one I was very curious about. I wouldn’t mind a more detailed breakdowns on some of the other sets you did if they already haven’t been done. The pictures are beautiful! Loved all of them but especially the birds. The breakdown on the poppies was very useful. I do like your piercing honesty on how you acquired the set, when it is anecdotal etc. I am learning so much,
Glad it was helpful! I think it is important to be 100% honest because $60 is a lot of money to waste if the pencils are not going to do what you want or if you have something at home already that is better. I also think it's good to know if someone might have a relationship with the company who's product they are reviewing. I'd want to know. :)
I'm glad someone reviewed these pencils, I guess it's new so not too many people use these yet...and the warning for the pencil sharpener wasn't long enough lol after you said if anyone is using head phones watch out and then a second after it started lol. I'll just enjoy the sets that I have and watch you color and create. Thanks for the coloring tips. Looking forward to more of your coloring and creating. Be well, stay safe.
I bought this set. I like it a lot. It's not Prismacolor which I love because it feels like butter, but it's nice. Definitely more like Polychromos than Prismacolor for certain
Great review. Thank you. We have Jerrysartarama in Arizona and I love the store. They are friendly and helpful. Lately I am ordering online. They are just great.
I bought the 72 piece set. I like the quality. They do have the colors numbered and swatched on the tin, but the set I received did not have the numbers or names on the pencils. Also the pencils were loose in the tin and not having numbers make it difficult to place in the correct order in the tin.
I have this set of pencils and I have bad arthritis. I had no trouble with my hands working with them. Pencil #123 did come with the wood cracked and trying to sharpen it out just made things worse. I don't know if this is a fairly usual occurrence with these pencils or a quality control issue as the broken wood was immediately obvious when I opened the tin. The pictures you made are amazing and hard to tell that they were made with colored pencils. Thank you for this informative video and I loved the point near the end when you showed how to make the flower and the leaf by adding layers. You do know what you are doing.
Thank you for the nice review. It’s lovely to see the still life pictures you do from nature 🌱🐇 ~I recently started to work in my new book ( new purchase ) Johanna Basford’s “ how to draw inky wonderlands” .. I found myself struggling to lay down colors.. used fine tip markers, color pencils, watercolor markers .. then I realized the problem was in the book paper. It feels like heavyweight Bristol hot plate. I have no idea what to use in this book, so far as color mediums go..I feel sorry if a young child tries to work in this book, they will be frustrated for sure. ~ I’m not sure what to do with this book . I can’t collage in it.. The paper would resist glue. I guess I could tape things .. ( sigh ) Well, at least I know it’s not my pencils !! 🤔😆😊
I have the same book but I haven't had issues with my pencils in the pages. I've used everything from prismacolor to polychromos and was able to layer and blend as usual. Which edition do you have? Sometimes US vs UK vs international editions use very different paper. I'm curious if I have to watch out for something like this with her next book!
I Absolutely Love the the Bird. You did very beautiful work. I wish I could color. I have a hard time with anything that I have to rest my hand on the table. I finally found out I have a bone spur on the base of my hand by my pinky. I had my knuckles replaced but it is the bone spur that makes it so hard to color. I Enjoyed this so much. Thank you so much for sharing. I wish the would remove it so I could color.
Lindsay, that yellow did make it pop... WoW!! Love your colored petal. TFS.😘✨👍🏾 So apart from the toned paper, would Strathmore Bristol paper work for pencil coloring or Canson watercolor paper hot press??
Any of those will work, it'd more of a matter of the texture and color you prefer to work on. I like a bit of tooth to grab the product but not so rough that it looks grainy. It's all up to what you enjoy:)
Lindsay, first of all your drawings/pictures look amazing, they look like paintings. I realize this video is older, but someone recommended these to me and I have the Schpirerr Farben 96 set. I know a lot of people say these 2 sets are similar. They look similar, but the colors? Are they similar, and how they behave? Oh actually I’m not sure if you tried the Schpirerr Farben? First the Cezanne says they are wax? The Schpirerr are not wax for sure. They are softer for being oil, I like them, but sometimes still have to press harder. So, if you know the Schpirerr pencils, are the Cezanne easier to lay down, they are wax indeed? I don’t know if you still have or use the Cezanne, since its been close to 2 years from this video. Thanks .Also do you like the Brutfuner square pencils, are they easy to use?
Thank you for showing us your best colored pencil art work.. Those birds look like they could fly out of the paper. I also like that you always mention that that are ok for arthritis hands . I have been trying to get Prisma color pencils. I also am trying not to buy things made in China. I'd like to know if my their are any any pencils that are made in USA that are any good and have a good review. I don't want to spend money on junk. Thanks for letting us know about the new pencils.
Prismacolor used to be made in USA prior to 2010 but I think they are made in Mexico now. Faber Castel is made in Germany, Derwent in the UK, Creatacolor (and soho) Austria, Koh i noor in the chech republic. Honestly I don;t know of any art pencils made in the USA but you can trust the above mentioned brands. Most stores and craft companies outsourse the media manufacturing to China or other Asian countries these days. Quality is hit or miss. I still rate prismacolors as my #1 fave.
Oh, Lindsay . I am so glad to see you do these. I have been on the fence about trying these. I have bought many things because of your reviews. thanks for reviewing, loved your artwork. Have you tried the chelsea lavender spike oil that Jerry's sells? It is supposed to be better for blending colored pencils as a safer alternative to odorless mineral spirits . here is link to read on in case others want something safer. I just ordered some to try with my colored pencils. You can use with oils and oil pastels as well. www.jerrysartarama.com/lavender-spike-oil-essence
I will have to see if some of that came in the sampler set I got. I like their lavender brush cleaner, it smells wonderful! I'm going to have to try that! Gamsol has no odor so that is typically what I'd use if I needed to which isn't too often because I usually do watercolor underneath. Thanks for the tip!
I got the 72 set last year without color names and there was a note posted on a review of these from Jerry's that said they were going to put the color names on the pencils on the next batch. I'm surprised to see they haven't done that yet.
Do you ever test for lightfastness? I'm still in the process of getting my feet wet with color pencils and I wasn't sure if reviewers such as yourself ever leave swatches in the sunlight over time to see if they fade or change color. Have really enjoyed your videos.
Question for Lindsay... I love my prismacolors, but sometimes need a little harder pencil for details.. would this be a good choice? you probably said.. but just needed to confirm
Nice to have options when the artist quality pencils have gotten so expensive in the last couple of months. Question, have you found a pencil that is as oily and as hard as the Polychromos? I am happy with my Prismacolor, but looking for something to create embossing lines, which if you haven't heard of the term are deep lines that you don't penetrate when coloring (they help maintain the line in leaf veins and things). When I try and do embossing lines with the Prismacolor they crumble a bit. I don't need the pigment, just the hardness I think. I may just need to buy a couple of neutral Polychromos, but I'm afraid to do so for fear that I'll like them! Yikes.
Teresa Atkinson ....I know exactly what you mean with the embossing lines, and personally I don’t think you can go wrong with a white polychromo pencil. In fact, in my opinion, the entire range of polychromos are hard to beat, I’ve got so many different brands of pencils, and they’re still my number one choice. I hope I’ve been of some help 🤗
Just buy the white Polychromos pencil, if they are available open stock in your area. That is the only use I can find for the white Polychromos, as otherwise I find it kind of useless. I don’t use that technique to often, maybe with fur, but mostly I just make lines with my exacto knife and color over it. I find I like a more opaque white, like the Prisma white or Derwent’s drawing pencil Chinese white or even the coloursoft.
The prismacolor colorless blender is pretty hard as is the lyra blender which is oil based, if you don't want pigment that would be the way to go. Soho pencils are openstock at Jerrys for like 59 cents each I think and they are very hard. That said, I agree with the other commenters if the polychromos white works for you then grab an extra open stock.
@@thefrugalcrafter My biggest fear is liking the Polychromos too much and I've spent way more on colored pencils than my abilities justify already, ha-ha....I might try the white Prismacolor for starters.
@@thefrugalcrafter I tried the Prismacolor colorless blender and it was only okay. So I tried a little stylus that came with a quilling kit and it worked very well...a little thick, but not bad if I'm careful. I guess I need to invest in more styli of various sizes. Phew, addiction to another expensive art supply (Polychromos) averted! ;-). Thanks Lindsay, Msboochie2 and MoonSpinners for your help.
I am looking for some information on lokss color pencils i would like to know if they are wax or oil and can I buy them open stock ... I really like how they color ... I got a set of 72 for my birthday but i can not find any information...
the pastels can be a bit on the weak side if coloring on a dark surface, I'd recommend getting a prismacolor white pencils and blending out the polychromos you want to lighten it up and make those colors pastel.
I've also been looking for a set of pastel colored pencils, Holbeins are out because of expense and I don't want to do a lot of blending because I'm usually coloring stamped images and don't want to invest that kind of time.
@@thefrugalcrafter the Sarent Art? I've had all of their sets and they were very scratchy and I had to press hard to get any color. I have MS and I can't use a pencil that makes my hand have to grip and press so hard. I'd go as far to say that Crayola is better than Sargent Art, and that's the truth. Cezanne is ok, I was just speaking about Sargent Art because I heard you mention them.
It seems hahnemuehle does not ship to California. So disappointed-- I wanted to try the toned watercolor paper. I tried Strathmore toned mixed media paper but it's too smooth.
I think wet paint in Minnesota Carrie's these books. They are not on their website yet but you could contact them about ordering. I believe their website is wetpaint.com
@@thefrugalcrafter Hi! Thanks so much. I sent them an email to inquire. BTW the website is wetpaintart.com wetpaint, com is a strange website --let's just say, don't let your kids see it. :) :)
I think superraedizzle tried them out if I'm not mistaken 🤔... I remember seeing a review somewhere at least and yes, it's just a pretty packaging for some very average pencils :)
No. No. No, It's not that the pencil lead is not centered. I have several brands [including these] and it's just how a person applies pressure. That's all. Sometimes one is steady handed, sometimes not. Friend has had pencils come out "slanted", then I take it, put it in the same sharpener 2 Seconds Later and "fix" it. Or visa-versa. On an emotionally hard day I cannot sharpen any pencil. Fix it with a tiny hand held sharpener watching the blade cut just that side.
I don't think it was ment as a racist comment, Joromi. I myself can give 5 reasonable reasons as to why someone might be avoiding chinese proucts. If I were to assume anything. But assuming something would be somewhat closed minded, for we don't know Mary. 😏 Have a good day.
@@cassandrarickard1681 agreed, it's not racist to support your own domestic economy. Also not racist to withhold your support for a government you don't agree with. They have literal concentration camps right now. So it's understandable. Racist would be treating Chinese people inequally. The people are different from the government.
Unfortunately it's near impossible to avoid. Even if you buy from U.S. companies, their products are made overseas. Cezanne is a brand from Jerry's Artarama, which is U.S. based company. Even if you ensured the product was made in the U.S., it's likely the resources & materials were sourced overseas manufacturers from China or Thailand. You can blame the weakening of anti-trust laws in the 80s and the trade agreements of the 90s & millennium.
Not sure why you've always said you're not a colored pencil artist. You're as good as the very best ones I've seen on TH-cam! Wow, girl!! Beautiful drawings.

Wow, I had no idea you could do that with pencil crayons. Maybe I’ll give it a try.
Thanks for that wonderful review.
Those two pencils feel identical. I never trust when they say oil or wax. It's always a blend.
Prism a color has nothing on Caran,Dache Pablo white. You should try it. It is amazing
Love the bird
I got the 72 set last year without color names and there was a note posted on a review of these from Jerry's that said they were going to put the color names on the pencils on the next batch. I'm surprised to see they haven't done that yet.
my set just had numbers
I laughed in frustration when you said Polychromos 120 cost $160. I’m in Australia and Amazon charge $339 for Faber Cassel polys
That's insane... Would importing them help or would shipping and import fees raise the price to the same level?
I would like to see a video showing how you use the powder you showed here.

@@thefrugalcrafter thanks :3
If anyone is interested, this brand now sells "open stock" in packs of 5 or 6 pencils.
Loved it!! Thanks
Have you ever thought of reviewing the Cezanne watercolor pencils?
I may, I've had a few people ask.
where can you get polychromos for $179? The cheapest I have seen is $200 for the large set
Tfs, Lindsay! What pen do you use on your Bristol paper when making a swatch chart of your colored pencils? Be well.
I dont swatch my wax/oil pencil sets except to take some basic colors and do a opacity/ saturation test and I use a permanent marker for that.
Do you ever test for lightfastness? I'm still in the process of getting my feet wet with color pencils and I wasn't sure if reviewers such as yourself ever leave swatches in the sunlight over time to see if they fade or change color. Have really enjoyed your videos.
Thanks Lindsay. I was wondering about these for a while now. " Colored pencil powder blender", oh man, say that 3 times really fast.😄😅🤣👍💜💜
Question for Lindsay... I love my prismacolors, but sometimes need a little harder pencil for details.. would this be a good choice? you probably said.. but just needed to confirm
They are a bit harder than Prismacolor. They layer great!
Schpirrer Farben pencils all have names. You may be right that they are the same as Cezanne.
Open stock on these are now available.
Yes they are! I'm glad!
Can’t find the sharpeners in Amazon 😭😭
I love my Polychromos, but they are light on the more pastel colours, these seem to have a good number of them.
the pastels can be a bit on the weak side if coloring on a dark surface, I'd recommend getting a prismacolor white pencils and blending out the polychromos you want to lighten it up and make those colors pastel.
I've also been looking for a set of pastel colored pencils, Holbeins are out because of expense and I don't want to do a lot of blending because I'm usually coloring stamped images and don't want to invest that kind of time.
Lovely video 😊👍
Have you tried the watercolor version of this brand?
Nope, I didnt know there was one. Have you?
@@thefrugalcrafter I haven’t tried it yet. It’s available at Jerry’s. There’s a great sale going on right now:)
@@kamalitarajagopalan2671 oh, the watercolor pencil! No, I haven't tried those but I thought you meant pan or tube colors. The price looks good.
Do they have colour names and numbers on the barrels?
I think just the numbers on the barrel if remember correctly
@@thefrugalcrafter thanks😘
What do you use to blend your colored pencils?
Sorry I asked about blending prior to you telling us. Should have watched video all the way through before asking
I don't like pencil shaming but I have nothing good to say about Sargent Art pencils
Thanks for the info. Were they the ones that look like these or others?
@@thefrugalcrafter the Sarent Art? I've had all of their sets and they were very scratchy and I had to press hard to get any color. I have MS and I can't use a pencil that makes my hand have to grip and press so hard. I'd go as far to say that Crayola is better than Sargent Art, and that's the truth. Cezanne is ok, I was just speaking about Sargent Art because I heard you mention them.
My impression is that some colors are too similar to each other, is it correct? ty
Yes, some are but it might not be such an issue on a set with no open stock options since you can grab a similar color
Thank you, Lindsey
It seems hahnemuehle does not ship to California. So disappointed-- I wanted to try the toned watercolor paper. I tried Strathmore toned mixed media paper but it's too smooth.
I think wet paint in Minnesota Carrie's these books. They are not on their website yet but you could contact them about ordering. I believe their website is wetpaint.com
@@thefrugalcrafter Hi! Thanks so much. I sent them an email to inquire. BTW the website is wetpaintart.com wetpaint, com is a strange website --let's just say, don't let your kids see it. :) :)
@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks so much!!! Just ordered my sketchbook. Can't wait to try it out!!!
Oh no! I am so sorry!
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich no worries! Found it on wet paint art.com. 😀
Don't use white pencils, none of them are opaque enough, use white acrylic for highlights, that way you get the best results.
Have you tried brush an pencil titanium white and touch up texture? Im loving that for my white highlights these days!
I can order this from india
Ever tried louis vuitton colored pencils?
nope and I don't intend to. I think you are paying for the bag, think they would feel to precious to use and I don't need that stress in my life LOL!
I think superraedizzle tried them out if I'm not mistaken 🤔... I remember seeing a review somewhere at least and yes, it's just a pretty packaging for some very average pencils :)
It's amazing ... The color pencils from reviews are like Crayola
No.
🔥👌
Trying hard to avoid Chinese products...
Wow. Autofocus.
