Lindsay, you are the most wonderful reviewer. You are forthright about your preferences, but your approach centers on "What is this good for?" rather than "Me Like"/"Me No LIke." That approach makes it easy to make intelligent decisions about the products you review but it ALSO (!!!) teaches us what factors to consider when we're buying any kind of art materials. Thank you so much.
Lindsay thanks for the review. I have purchased 4 sets of budget pencils since April to keep from using up my Luminance, Pablos, Polychromos, Derwent Lightfast or Holbeins (only the 36 set of Holbein) for coloring books or sketching. I found that I like the Markart the best so far, out of the budget brands that I purchased; Starjoy, Brutfuner Square and Arteza. I tend to like the harder pencils like the Polychromos or Pablos and the Markart seem to hold their sharpness similarly like the Polys or Pablos when layering.
First- you’re painting is stunning! Really gorgeous. I love the colors in my 120 set. I mix them with my good pencils and on own. My daughter is back into art and Im sharing my alcohol markers with her and want to get her a set of pencils. This 72 set looks great! Thanks so much for this review and so glad I got to see the color range. I prefer soft pencils too but still love pastels in this set. Was just thinking about this last night. Thanks so much Lindsay!💕

I appreciate how thorough your reviews are. Being new to colored pencils, I need honest reviews like this. I have flowed you for a while and every review of yours that I have watched has been spot on. Thank you for being open and honest with every review you provide.
Good review, I have the Markart box of 120 and it seemed like a good deal for $38, and after watching this video, I was very satisfied with these colors.
Thank you for reviewing the Mark art colored pencils. I have the 120 set and I absolutely love them. I also have the square 120 Brutfuner, and the 120 Cezanne. I also have Derwent Lighfast, Polychromos and Prismacolors. The Markart and the Brutfuner are perfect to practice my skills with. I will certainly buy them again, but will not buy the Cezanne. I hadn't used them for a couple of months and I took them out of the tin and they reek with a very strong chemical spill. I'm going to take them out and put them in a jar so they can at least air out a bit. Anyway, as always a thorough and excellent review. Yours is the third review I have watched specifically for the Markart colored pencils. Every review highly recommended these pencils
Similar to Holbein with lots of pastels? Hmm these might be worth a look see. I’ve been curious about the Holbein pencils and this whole package costs as much as 6 Holbeins!
25$ 120 set is a yesss vs 300+ for Holbein. I’m excited to try these , I have the pastel 50 set of Holbein so I’m excited to compare. Thx for this review it really helped me decide! ❤🖍
@@thefrugalcrafter ok not like Holbein. Closer to Arteza. Slightly more waxy feeling than Arteza. I’m an oil based pencil lover, so I would definitely recommend for people who want more wax in their pencil. For 25$ it wasn’t a complete loss but ya continue the hunt for Holbein dupes!! ❤
Thanks for another great review. I was considering investing in a set of holbeins but couldnt bring myself to spend that much money. Having watched your review and Harry's at art gear guide, I realised I am happy with the nyoni ones. I did a comparison myself of one of each colour of each hrand and theres not much difference. They look the same and feel the same to me. Very pigmented at a fraction of the cost 🎉
You are correct about reviews effecting Amazon prices. Now if I decide to purchase I simply wait. It was no fun waiting for my Luminance and Polychromos pencils. I just bought the Magnus pencils. OMG 😲 My absolute faves. So utterly smooth. Hey Lyndsay, if you read this entirely could you link me to your ink pad rehydration video. Plenty of ink just a bit dry. I finally have a studio and need all my supplies at the ready. Furniture going in now. SUPER EXCITED 😄 WOO-HOO
Oh yay! I got these a couple weeks back when you posted about the sale! I have really been enjoying them! I have my Polychromos and my Luminance. Prismacolor. Etc Etc. But I love having good budget sets too. A good pencil is a good pencil!!
I was lucky enough to get the 120 Markart pencils when Amazon offered them several weeks ago, and I’ve found that they measure up quite well to my “good” colored pencils bar none. As an over 70 retired senior with CIPN, Except for dr visits and 3 brief masked craft store outings, I’ve self quarantined since a year ago March, and what I would have spent for gasoline, I’ve used for double handfuls of every “good” pencil marketed in the USA, I think, to add to my sets of Polys and Prismas. A big shout out to the Frugal Crafter and Lisa at Color My World for enabling me! It’s been less expensive than therapy, a lot more fun, and I have all the pretty colors to play with to brighten my days even when the sun doesn’t. 😋
@@thefrugalcrafter I am very picky when it comes to colored pencils, some of the sets I have are as follows. 2 sets of positive art colored pencils, 150 prisma color set, Markart 120, shuttle art 180, Kalour 180, Kalour 240, 3 sets of H&B colored pencils which are excellent. One of the H&B is a 180 colored pencils set, couple of other sets. All of which I read the reviews on, all of my colored pencils sets are similar to the prismacolor set. Because that's just the type of colored pencils I love to use. I forgot I have the castle art 72 and 120 set
Well I just ordered the Nyoni 48 watercolour set yesterday! So glad you like the coloured pencils. Hopefully the watercolour ones are as good. I have a 72 set of Obos and really love them! I live in South Africa and getting affordable pencils here is so difficult.
I ordered these based on your review because I'm not a big colored pencil artist. I haven't used them yet but I did color some doodles with a few of them and I think I'm really going to like them. Thank you so much for your honest, thorough reviews. I didn't want to spend big bucks on a medium I don't use that much but I did want to have some if I want to use them. These will be just right for my needs.
Thank you for this review. I have found that colored pencils are my way to go creating watercolors. If i don't draw my flower first, I get blobs which look like nothing. Is that something I could ever learn? (free, loose painting? don't think so). I have about 200 10 year old Prismacolors which I am using up. I have some Holbein, and other brands. This set will be a nice addition. Love your advice.
Ok, I’m watching for what I can learn from you but NO MORE PENCILS! Hahaha. Always love to see the effort you put into these reviews and what I can learn along the way so thank you!

I so appreciate the thorough review on these pencils, Lindsay. I am stuck in budget land, so price is important. I assume these are oil based. I am not crazy about the necessity of layering until I almost die of old age, and prefer wax pencils , but if these will work with wax-based pencils, that would really help me expand my color choices. Thank you for the tip of using odorless mineral spirits to blend these pencils. That would help a lot. Do you know of any tutorials about using these with wax-based pencils on how to get them to work together smoothly? I know you prefer not to review pencils, because you are so knowledgeable about how to use them that you don't need to swatch them and already know how to combine oil and wax-based pencils if needed for obtaining colors that may not be available in the wax-based sets. You are so very kind to use your so busy time to help those of us who need help with combining differently based pencils. Thank you so much! I would still love to see a tutorial on how you used these pencils to color that beautiful purple Geode. Has anyone else expressed an interest in seeing that?
Thanks for the review! I really enjoy my Nyoni 120 set. My only complaint is that I wish I had your cool dolphin tin (even though I move all my pencils to cases, haha). 😆
I really liked these pencils and am very grateful that I found them reviewed by you. Do you have a video of how you colored that beautiful Geode? It is really fabulous, and I would love to see you do it with these pencils. Thank you so much for your very thorough review of these pencils, and causing another item to appear on my WANT LIST. I am hoping to find a more recent review, especially by you, because halfway affordable colored pencils are changing quality and pricing all the time.
@@cathl3154 its ok Cath, I don’t need anymore pencils. I have a few sets and certainly don’t need anymore! Was just pointing out that here, in the UK, they aren’t cheaper than Arteza.
I know you said you don't do pencil swatching videos, but I find them so very helpful and watch a fair amount of them because I can get a much more accurate idea of the colors and it helps to make my decision about buying them or not.. Swatching videos are actually a joy to watch... wish you did more.. ; )
Interesting that you found them similar to Arteza and Holbein. I have the Nyoni which is supposed to be the same. I find mine much more similar to my Polychromos than the Holbein. maybe they aren't the same.
I did not watch any videos of anyone and tested out many brands independently with no preconceived ideas. My experience was the Nyoni were almost identical to Polychromos in most colors. I did not feel they were like Holbein either. The set of Mark Art I tried were not as nice as my Nyoni for whatever reason. That can happen with manufacturing of course with any pencils.
Hi Lindsay. Thank you for your review. I have a question about Markart's charcoal colored pencils. I love the blendability of them and really like working with them. Are there any other charcoal budget friendly (of course) that you like? Thank you for your time and consideration.
I always learn so much from your reviews. Tossing so many pencils names out during a review does confuse me at times. I'm curious about finding a decent (good) Prismacolor substitute, as they are out of my price range currently. Beautiful geode drawing.
Arteza colored pencils seem to have a connection to Magicfly, quite a few of their names are the same so they are at least made from the same pigments. Star Joy Original leads are made at the same factory as Castle Arts leads but they are different formulations.
Question, what are your thoughts on these vs the brutfuner square pencils? I am trying to pick out a budget brand of pencils to practice more with. I do love the way prismacolors minus the breakage lol. So we have similar taste in pencils. Which is why I wanted your opinion.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks for getting back to me on this, I will put them on my list for sure then. Heck maybe even both haha. Also I wanted to say I can't wait to watch your Michaels class Friday.
I believe the Arteza experts don't have a pastel range because it's difficult to provide a budget pastel pencil with any reasonable degree of lightfastness - which is their goal more or less. I'm not sure how accurate their lightfast claims are, but they do have ratings. I haven't asked them about that yet or their testing process.
The Chinese pencils are a bit confusing. It seems there is a lot of rebranding going on. I have both Holbein, Polychromos (the other brand these pencils are often compared to as being similar) and the Arteza's you mentioned, so I think I will hold off on buying more Chinese made pencils which could end up being duplicated.
Yes and since you already have top notch brands it's cheaper to maintain them with a new pencil here and there as needed as opposed to buying a budget set.
N 17 is apricot and N 110 is apricot two different colors with the same name N119 AND N14 are both Lavender similar tones N53 and N019 are both name Royal but two different colors N063 Grey Purple N111 Purple Grey slightly different color but very similar
OK I once told myself that I would NEVER buy a budget pencil again! then I just could not help myself and got the Square ones you are so happy with, just to see what you like and if I have a similar opinion, While I like the Brutfuner Square pencils, I am only going to use them to waste time or color in books. I might end up giving them to a niece or nephew. I like that you offer good advice and are in touch with so many of your viewers! I also like that your specify the difference between professional Art and casual user supplies! You earned a Thumbs Up from me for sure!
Lindsay, which of the brands have you tested, have the softest core? My hand hurts when I apply the tiniest bit of pressure when I use coloring pencils.
Look through Lindsay's other videos. She has one where she rates something like 15 sets by hardness. Click the Show More, where she lists the pencils by hardness.
Please continue to do swatching videos not for yourself but for the consumer on TH-cam because I always watch every one of my pencils because that's how I find duplicates and I find a lot of mistakes and it helps me to learn the colors to help it helps me to coordinate color and to draw so please don't stop swatching you will definitely lose yours who enjoy that
Hi Lindsey. Thank you for another informative review. I like to do colored pencil on black paper. What is the most opaque colored pencil you’ve come across?
The Holbein white is outstanding! I wouldn’t have guessed that any white pencil could beat the old (and I do mean old) standby Prisma white pencils that I have in each of my colored pencil cases, but the Holbein pencils I do just that.😋
I’m an incomplete quadriplegic, force won’t work for me unfortunately. I have had the 48 set of these for months, I’d consider getting larger set but right now I’m not spending any extra money.
Hi Lindsay. Love your youtube videos as always. I am looking for a good set of colored pencils for adult coloring books. Have you ever used or reviewed Crayola Signature Series Blend & Shade Coloured Pencils 50 Count? I like their gel pens and their markers. Just wondering what you thought.
I tried one of the crayola adult coloring sets and they were ok but I think there are better ones depending on your price range. The brutfuner square pencils on Amazon are my budget pick.
These are a bit harder. The quality on both are good but I'd go for the brutfuner squares if you like a softer pencil to blend and these markart if you like a harder pencil to layer.
Could you tell me of any reliable reviewers who have done evaluations of the Soucolor, Budget pencils? Their cores are supposed to be 4 mm, but I can't find any reviews on them by reviewers that I have known for over a decade like you or even info on whether they are wax or oil based. I suspect they are oil based, which I don't like, and the price is too good for a 180 set to be true. I don't want you to use your time for this when you already give so much of yourself and of your time to help us so much. I would appreciate your advice on who are some reliable reviewers I could contact who have evaluated these pencils and perhaps done a tutorial on how to use them by themselves, and if possible, with other brands. You will always be my number one, and I consider your time too precious to use any of it for a review on Soucolor budget pencils.
There are several reviews from coloring book artists on TH-cam. Mira Byler has one too. They look like the black barrel bencils sold under other brands like castle set and magic fly to me.
Lindsay, where’d you get that perfect container for the mineral spirits? Thank you for the in depth review. Wow the Holbein pencils are crazy expensive....and of course I’d want the 100 pencil set.
When I saw a number in a red box, I immediately thought of Arteza. It's interesting that the Mark Art sharpen well because my Arteza pencils are terrible for breaking when I sharpen them and on further inspection, the leads are rarely centered. They do seem to have a better colour range, though. 😊 Interesting that Arteza are now available open stock now. I don't know about the US, but on the UK site they're offering single colours in packs of three rather than individual pencils, though I guess it makes sense to buy packs of three if you like creating landscape or botical pieces and use a lot of green. 😊 Do the new version of Arteza colours match the barrel colour more closely than they used to?
@@carolynpicken6949 Thank you for the recommendation. 😊 I currently use a Faber-Castell Grip Trio and so far I've found it works beautifully on all my pencils.... Except Arteza. 🤪
My Brutfuner squares are a bit water soluble, so I separated them from the Prismacolors, and plan to add in the Markarts instead. I can soften lines of Brutfuners with water in mixed media projects, whereas the Markarts will hold their places.
Great video. Im just starting out drawing and cartooning is my favorite. I have been watching a lot of videos on pencils and at this point so confused also having sticker shock at some of the prices of good pencil. I been using Crayola pencils which are horrible dry hard not pigmented and said its time for a major upgrade here but I want decent pencils at a middle price point. Can anyone Suggest some decent colored pencils?
I think the brufuner square pencils are the best budget pick. A 72 set is around $20 and the 120 set if $30. I have a review here: th-cam.com/video/N6Av_C-Bz3g/w-d-xo.html they sell a round set of 180 but i have not tried them and I hear the lead is different. The brutfuner squares are softer than the markart I reviewef here.
Thank you so much for answering so quickly. I will pick them up tonight on amazon. Currently working on Popeye the sailor man for my boyfriend for valentines day so I need better pencil. Love your channel thanks again for the recommendation
The MarkArt and Nyoni are the same pencils. America sells as MarkArt Nyoni are other countries. Same colors in set. I have MarkArt 72 and Nyoni 120 and can verify. Bought them not knowing. They are definitely NOT the same as Arteza.
I absolutely love Holbeins but nit a fan of arteza.... the delis feel like a harder and less pigmented arteza to me... am I going to like these? I love the brutfuner squares minus the fact they saturate quite fast and I was doubting between getting the nyoni or brutfuners again
@@thefrugalcrafter Another reviewer seemed to thinik they were as several Amazon reviewers did. I love how they feel in my hand & on the paper. They have a smooth lay down. Ive got several wax based pencils but these felt more like the 12 polys that I have.
Nice review! I was surprised to hear you say Holbeins are hard. I have the 50 pastel set (from Japan, NOT $4 each), and they seem quite soft…. not as soft as Prismacolors, but close the Derwent Coloursoft or Lightfast (though I only have a handful of each if those). I’ll have to take them out again and see if my opinion changed… I’ve barely used them… too precious. One other thing I have noticed with the Chinese budget pencils… even the seemingly different colors look SO similar when I put fixative over them (I do that in my swatch book, after finding them smearing all over the facing page). I wonder why that is?

Hi Lindsay. Thank you for your review. I have a question about Markart's charcoal colored pencils. I love the blendability of them and really like working with them. Are there any other charcoal budget friendly (of course) that you like? Thank you for your time and consideration.
Generals are nice for the price
I love your reviews, Lindsay! I want to buy these and other colored pencils, but, it's really not my thing. They're so pretty though. Tfs.
Thank you for the lovely video miss lindsay you are awesome as allways😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
I always learn so much from your reviews. Tossing so many pencils names out during a review does confuse me at times. I'm curious about finding a decent (good) Prismacolor substitute, as they are out of my price range currently. Beautiful geode drawing.
Brutfuner squares
@@thefrugalcrafter thanks for the info! I'll check them out right now.
@@nancyhappily9503 I really love my square Brutfuners.
Thanks for the review!
Arteza colored pencils seem to have a connection to Magicfly, quite a few of their names are the same so they are at least made from the same pigments. Star Joy Original leads are made at the same factory as Castle Arts leads but they are different formulations.
Arteza feel more like marco tribute or noyni (mark art) to me, magic fly feel like castle arts to me.
Thanks Lindsay. 💜
In Canada both Arteza & Markart are over $100 . Arteza are over $120.
Question, what are your thoughts on these vs the brutfuner square pencils? I am trying to pick out a budget brand of pencils to practice more with. I do love the way prismacolors minus the breakage lol. So we have similar taste in pencils. Which is why I wanted your opinion.
Brutfuner squares
@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks for getting back to me on this, I will put them on my list for sure then. Heck maybe even both haha. Also I wanted to say I can't wait to watch your Michaels class Friday.
Thanks Lindsay 😊
Beautiful pencil art!
Sarah Renee Clark just recently did a comparison review of the MarkArt and the Nyoni pencils and though they may seem identical the sets are different
The cores are identical. It’s just the barrels that changed.
Thank so so much for your integrity!
They are pretty pricey on UK Amazon
48 pencils for £77.04 🤔
I'd got for Derwent in the UK. Better pencils, better price.
@@thefrugalcrafter thank you!!! I love derwent and have msny of their pencils so I'm not sure why I'm still looking.
N 17 is apricot and N 110 is apricot two different colors with the same name
N119 AND N14 are both Lavender similar tones
N53 and N019 are both name Royal but two different colors
N063 Grey Purple N111 Purple Grey slightly different color but very similar
OK I once told myself that I would NEVER buy a budget pencil again! then I just could not help myself and got the Square ones you are so happy with, just to see what you like and if I have a similar opinion, While I like the Brutfuner Square pencils, I am only going to use them to waste time or color in books. I might end up giving them to a niece or nephew. I like that you offer good advice and are in touch with so many of your viewers! I also like that your specify the difference between professional Art and casual user supplies! You earned a Thumbs Up from me for sure!
The 120 set is currently on sale for 29$
Lindsay, which of the brands have you tested, have the softest core? My hand hurts when I apply the tiniest bit of pressure when I use coloring pencils.
Me too…RA.
Look through Lindsay's other videos. She has one where she rates something like 15 sets by hardness. Click the Show More, where she lists the pencils by hardness.
Does the 120 range has pastel?
Some, better check the swatch on amazon
Please continue to do swatching videos not for yourself but for the consumer on TH-cam because I always watch every one of my pencils because that's how I find duplicates and I find a lot of mistakes and it helps me to learn the colors to help it helps me to coordinate color and to draw so please don't stop swatching you will definitely lose yours who enjoy that
I love your reviews! Can you please review the new Posca Pencils? Id love to know what you think 😁
I'll look for them. Last I heard they were very expensive for a new product.
Hey there! For the sea monkeys, any advice on how to add water to the tank?
Just top it off to replace what evaporated
Thank you! 👍
Hi Lindsey. Thank you for another informative review. I like to do colored pencil on black paper. What is the most opaque colored pencil you’ve come across?
Probably holbein, prismacolor coloursoft
The Holbein white is outstanding! I wouldn’t have guessed that any white pencil could beat the old (and I do mean old) standby Prisma white pencils that I have in each of my colored pencil cases, but the Holbein pencils I do just that.😋
Hi Lindsay.. wondering how these would compare (in your opinion) with the arrtx 126 pencils? Which one is softer to blend?
Arrtx is softer.both are nice tho.
@@thefrugalcrafter thank you ♥️
I’m an incomplete quadriplegic, force won’t work for me unfortunately. I have had the 48 set of these for months, I’d consider getting larger set but right now I’m not spending any extra money.
Thanku. I love your videos. Xxx
Thank you Lindsay I will definitely check out your videos on pencils.
Hi Lindsay, wondering how these would compare (in your opinion) with the square Brutfuner pencils?
I Just Bought Markart Colored Pencils 72 for $13.99 On Amazon 😁 😃😄
Wow, good deal! I hope they are still high quality, please let me know if you get a chance:)
@@thefrugalcrafter Markart do feel High Quality My Niece Been trying to Them From Me 😁😄🤗😃
What did you have in the cotton ball bottle? Could you share with me. The blending looks beautiful
Gamsol
Lindsay, where’d you get that perfect container for the mineral spirits? Thank you for the in depth review. Wow the Holbein pencils are crazy expensive....and of course I’d want the 100 pencil set.
My niece brought it back to me as a souvenir from Las Vegas.
I just looked up these pencils on Canadian Amazon - $81.99.
When I saw a number in a red box, I immediately thought of Arteza. It's interesting that the Mark Art sharpen well because my Arteza pencils are terrible for breaking when I sharpen them and on further inspection, the leads are rarely centered.
They do seem to have a better colour range, though. 😊
Interesting that Arteza are now available open stock now. I don't know about the US, but on the UK site they're offering single colours in packs of three rather than individual pencils, though I guess it makes sense to buy packs of three if you like creating landscape or botical pieces and use a lot of green. 😊
Do the new version of Arteza colours match the barrel colour more closely than they used to?
Try a Dahle 133 sharpener…never have broken leads. The best sharpener ever
@@carolynpicken6949 Thank you for the recommendation. 😊
I currently use a Faber-Castell Grip Trio and so far I've found it works beautifully on all my pencils.... Except Arteza. 🤪
What year arteza pencils do you have? They have used 3 different formulas on their expert colored pencils. These are like the 2019 ones.
@@thefrugalcrafter I'm pretty sure mine are the 2019 ones too (I won then in a prize drawer from another TH-camr). 😊
how do they compare to the brutfuner squares? these look amazing but I do love really oliy soft pencils
These are harder and drier than brutfuner squares.
@@thefrugalcrafter thank you so much!
The mark art and nyoni remind me of the arteza packaging , never tried any of these so can’t say if they feel the same.
They do look similar! They feel similar too. Markart has more pastels tho.
@@thefrugalcrafter Maybe Markart will do the open stock like Arteza in the future!
Is there a lightfastness test for these?
I haven't done one but probably someone has.
What is in the glass jar to make moon white? ❤️
I have gamsol in a jar for blending
I'm a little confused. You don't use water to blend wc pencils?
Your reviews are fantastic. There are so many brands it's confusing.
I do for watercolor pencils. These are not watercolor pencils
Belíssimo 👍🏻
Thanks for this, Lindsay. I purchased a Prismacolor set a few months back for
I just finished filming it! It will be up in a week or so!
@@thefrugalcrafter Ohhhhh very looking forward to that!!! BIG THANK YOU ❤️🌺
My Brutfuner squares are a bit water soluble, so I separated them from the Prismacolors, and plan to add in the Markarts instead. I can soften lines of Brutfuners with water in mixed media projects, whereas the Markarts will hold their places.
How do they work with Gamsol?
Good
Great video.
Is it just me or does this look exactly like the arteza packaging
Are they lightfast?
I highly doubt it.
The MarkArt and Nyoni are the same pencils. America sells as MarkArt Nyoni are other countries. Same colors in set. I have MarkArt 72 and Nyoni 120 and can verify. Bought them not knowing. They are definitely NOT the same as Arteza.
What version of the arteza pencils do you have?
I absolutely love Holbeins but nit a fan of arteza.... the delis feel like a harder and less pigmented arteza to me... am I going to like these? I love the brutfuner squares minus the fact they saturate quite fast and I was doubting between getting the nyoni or brutfuners again
The box design looks like Arteza, lol. Probably the same pencils as well.
It's a common style and the pencils are similar.
Are these oil based?
Not sure
My Holbiens seem harder than prisma and coloursoft and lightfast to me. I'm not sure on the fixative as I don't typically use it
👍🏾❤️💯. Hugz
I'd rather have these than Holbein. If there's a more overpriced, overrated product o any kind on the market than Holbein pencils, I haven't found it.
