  • A cart is a great way to store your jet ski over the winter, and is a must for those who transfer their jet ski from trailer to trailer. After years of use and careful thought, we've come up with an optimal design for a jet ski cart that is strong, inexpensive and relatively easy to build.

      Good luck with your cart. Mine is still working great. The only thing I'd recommend is if your 6x6 vertical pieces aren't completely dry when you cut them, put some wax on the ends. Mine have cracked quite a bit, although they still work okay. Thanks for your comment.

      Glad to hear it worked out. While doing some repairs this winter I had it on the cart with a full tank of gas, and both Chris and I working on the deck at the same time. That's an extra 400 pounds on the cart (not including the gas), and it had no problem holding us. I'm even more confident in the design now. Thanks for your comment.

      This just popped up in my youtube algorithm today. Lol.. the stand is still goin strong. I actually added a mod because when it didn't have the ski on it, it was in the way taking up room in the garage. I cut a piece of 3/4" plywood wide enough to overlap the bunks. Then screwed 2x3's on the underside of the long edges. Set on top to make a rolling table/workbench. 2x3's keep top in place. It spends most of its time this configuration and when I need the stand, I just take the top off!

    Thanks for this video. I made my cart this past weekend and it seems very strong. I had to improvise a bit on some of the materials but basically made the same cart. I'm going to add bunk slides to mine to see if that makes it easier to transfer. I may also try to figure out how to put a crank on the back of the cart so I could just crank it on....We'll see. The cart online was $300. After following your build I spent about $225. Saved a little money but I think this cart is way stronger and better than the $300 I would have bought.

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The castors are a huge part of the cost. I still use mine and it's going as strong as the day it was made. The only advice I can give is to make sure your vertical posts are as dry as possible, or cover the ends with some was to prevent drying, as mine are now splitting lengthwise as they've dried out. Thanks for your comment!

  • @yeisonx
    @yeisonx 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This video will show you how we get it on the trailer (th-cam.com/video/uxyfqDPoQ2o/w-d-xo.html). We get it off by sliding it by hand (that's why the bunks need to be the same height). It helps if yo wet down the bunks first. Thanks for your comment.

      I got mine from Princess Auto, but you can get them at most larger hardware chains. Just make sure they can handle at least 750 lbs each, and are 5" or 6" in diameter. Good luck.

  • @jaybirdderby
    @jaybirdderby ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you consider (or try) using a bolster bracket (typically used with metal trailers) instead of fabricating with the mending plate? Perhaps the mending plate holds the vertical position better with wood construction but you would lose some adjustment range due to the requirement to re-drill (wouldn't want to drill near a previous hole in wood)? Perhaps using a bolt instead of a screw to mount on the 6x6 could minimize slipage in the bolster bracket slot? Maybe with a washer between the bolster and 6x6 to help?

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Jay, It was a matter of price. We didn’t think we’d be adjusting the height, but wanted to have the option to adjust it just in case. Turns out years later we haven’t had the need to do so (yet). Good suggestion though. Thanks for your comment.

  • @manchesterroofingsystems8016

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine is about 27" to center of the bunk, but yours might be different so you'll need to adjust the height according to your trailer. Good luck.

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not those castors. One of the best parts of the cart is the castors, so don't skimp there. Stick with some heavy-duty, large ones so it's easy to move around. Good luck with your project! (BTW, I'm still using mine and it's going strong).

  • @613Stuart
    @613Stuart 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay, watched the other vid and it's easy to see how you took it off the cart onto the trailer, but how do you get it off the trailer onto the cart? Also, where did you get the wheels? I'm also in Canada, thinking about building this to store my seadoo in my garage this year.

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No matter what cart you build, the key is to have it at the same height as the trailer. The primary reason for the eye hooks is for getting the ski off the trailer and onto the cart. We line the two up, spray some water onto the cart bunk (that's why I use pressure-treated lumber for the bunks), and with a guy on either side of the ski, slide away. Yes, it takes 5 or 6 (or more) slides, but it's a lot harder if the cart is higher than the trailer. When they're the same height, it also prevents the cart from tipping up (if it's taller). Good luck!

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We’ve produced another video on that. Essentially, we hook the two together, and since the bunks are at the same height, you slide the ski onto the cart with one person on each side of the ski pulling backwards. A little water sprayed on each bunk helps it slide. Thanks for your comment.

    I have a jet trailer of this kind. Is it better for the hull to rest solely on the 2 planks, or is it better to distribute some weight on the rubber rollers that I have in the middle? Currently my jet ski is not touching the rollers.
    Might be a minor issue, but just curious whats best for the hull.

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not aware of your jet trailer, but the more evenly the load is distributed on the hull, the better. The distribution of the load of the ski on the two 4-foot bunks seems to work fine, and I haven't found anyone who's had an issue with this, so we stick with it.

    Just build it, I got everything at Lowe’s exact wheels. Got them from Harbor F.
    Save little there and got $5.00 off on damage woood ends.
    At end spent $110. for everything.
    hardware $30.
    Wood $40.
    Wheels $20.
    Carpet $10.
    Four Metal brackets $10.
    Total: $110.
    I rounded up to not add tax.
    Ball parking it $90.-$120.
    You could save money many ways. Still looking back at it I’m needing this to save space and to work on ski.
    It’s worth it to me bc my garage is small. But you could always just build slides onto low coffee table. Still if you counting your pennies on mobile ski stand you most likely can’t afford one or gas in it every weekend. So hope it helps understanding cost it’s about $100.00 give or take

      You can load the ski from the cart to the trailer by using the winch on the trailer, but backing it off from the trailer onto the cart is really a 2-man job. There are some tricks I've heard of that can help (lubricants and plastics on the bunk), but it's probably best to get a friend to help for

      We're up in Canada, so it's always 50% more expensive than down south (if that's where you're from), but the cost for everything (including the wood) was about $150 CDN. The main cost by far is the castors. Also, buying the big screws retail is very expensive. If you've got hardware lying around, and get the castors on sale, you can make itfor a lot less. Thanks for your comment.

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the weight is distributed through the 4 brackets, but they're bolted directly onto the 6"x6" posts with long screws. The brackets could fold if they were too long, so don't let them protrude much above the top of the posts. Good luck.

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      BTW, my cart is still working perfectly. The only issue I have is splitting of the 6"x6" posts along the length. If I ever change them, i'll paint the ends with a wax-based sealer to prevent splitting.
