Why would anyone come here? A perfect weekend of fly fishing | Lost in the Driftless

  • This was about as close to perfect as a weekend can get.
I have yet to see or find better trout fishing East of the Rocky Mountains. Southern Tailwaters, Great Lakes Tributaries, and even The Smoky Mountains all pale in comparison. In the United States, the Driftless Region is so far and above any other major trout fishing "destination". This kind of day is quite common and gives you the opportunity of both quantity and quality. Endless dry fly rises at every bend and the chance for nymphing up monsters from the undercuts. Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota have untold numbers of streams JUST LIKE THIS ONE. Oh and did I mention? We were the ONLY anglers on the river. The Driftless is an absolute treat.

I’m 67 and still have my favorite fishing 🎣 pole that my Mom gave me when I was 12. It’s a Eagle 🦅 Claw Original Trail master, 8’ yellow fiberglass with brown treading, combo cork handle with a stainless steel adapter knob. What a fine balanced rod. Thank you so very much for your videos. You are the only one making trout fishing 🎣 videos that cares about releasing the trout gently back into the stream, thank you. When I get my Grant Funding from Jeff Beso’s for my Trout Stream Rehabilitation Project, I want you on board

Really awesome setting, that river you are fishing. Beautiful countryside. You really need to consider writing. You are an excellent story teller. And thank you for describing your rig and rod set up 👍. I always ask if you fish glass or graphite, but I don't get any answer 😂

I am very new to fly fishing and have learned alot from watching your videos. Thank you for the content that you bring. You can truly tell your passion for the sport of fly fishing. Out of curiosity around the 24:05 mark of this video, I hear what sounds like the drumming of a Rough Grouse. I am a avid upland bird hunter and am curious to know if the Driftless, (MN, WI and IA) holds a large population of these elusive birds?

When I was 14 In 1974- on a visit to Denver- my uncle gave me my granddads fly rod as it had sat around unused for decades. It's a Eagle Claw Sny&McGill 7 ft #5, and I used it all thru high school to catch bluegills, crappies and bass in SW Iowa. Now 50 years after seeing that rod for the first time, your beautiful videos make me want to get it out of my "fishing room" and get back up to NE Iowa for some wild brown trout spots I know.

Your Driftless videos always brighten my day. My wife and I spend hours touring the back roads of the Iowa Driftless.
I have a sweet 7.5' fiberglass rod and all of the gear. Now it is time to catch a trout. Best. Mike R.

Mosquitoes think of my blood as some sort of fine wine. If you also experience the same problem, a recent video on the weather channel talked about how mosquitoes HATE the smell of coconuts. I hope you find this little bit of information both us and informative. 😇

You are a great still water fly fisherman. Enjoy the beaver ponds and the bountiful wildlife the beaver ponds bring to a valley stream. A good brook trout food chain in the beaver pond will produce a 5-pound brook trout??

    • @FLYALLSZN
      @FLYALLSZN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Loving your trips on the "driftless"
The area reminds me so much of my home county of Perthshire, scotland and a couple of streams I flyfish. Always like to find out new stuff . Fascinating looking into the geographic history of the area.
Hoping to get across the pond in the future, have a sister living in Colorado 👍.
Keep up the good work . Size doesn't matter, it's all about the wildies 😎

Beautiful brook trout. The size of them on that stream is really impressive.
I've talked with the DNR on occasion about beaver dams. They're happy to get reports because they might not otherwise know about them-they can't get everywhere every year. I'd encourage you to contact them and let them know the location of the dams so that they can direct work crews to remove the dams (and maybe the beavers too).
    Another great video.

Nice fishing. I live just outside the driftless area in Wisconsin. The beaver dams you are seeing are part of a reintroducing effort. They actually help the quality of the streams and fish populations, as you noticed.

My concern was more for the browns living in the beaver ponds. There were some massive browns living in the ponds that would surely hurt the brooks.

As far as I’ve seen beavers are more harmful than beneficial in the driftless. In the western states where water is more precious, beavers retaining water is helpful, around here though we’ve got plenty of water, they just warm our creeks and ruin streams.

It is trust me! Guys like flyallszn and pescador on the fly have made spots like this very well known about. One of the last times I went, there was a guy from Montana. There's very few good streams in Iowa that don't get hammered. A reason why catching a brown over 14" is pretty rare for flyallszn let alone 18"
