How to Check Your Service Disconnect

- If your Home Comfort System isn't turning on and you have already checked the circuit breakers, there is one more thing you can check before calling for service - the Service Disconnect. Sometimes when you move into a brand new home, the service disconnect may be turned off still. If your Home Comfort System still does not turn on, please call us for service and we can schedule an appointment immediately.

I found the little handle you pull out laying on the ground. I put it back in and secured the cover. Working perfect now! Still not sure how it got out, but it’s secured. Thank you so much.

I wish I could like this 1,000 times. We moved into a new construction during the late fall, and only just now has it started to warm up outside. So we thought our HVAC was damaged when it was 79 degrees in the house! Thank you so much for this.
just had the same problem in a new construction, hadn't had to use the ac until about a week ago and no cold it was coming in. This video saved me from having to pay someone to come out and make me look like a moron! 😆

This was SO helpful. There is a box like this above my ELECTRIC WATER HEATER in the brand new home that I just moved into. I wasn't getting hot water and went through the breaker box to check that it had power, checked the reset button on the upper access panel of the heater and also changed the temperature settings thinking that it just wasn't set high enough. Never even realized what this box was. My neighbor mentioned "the box above the heater" to me but I still didn't know how it worked. It was set to off for some reason. Not sure why they'd leave it like that after installing it. Thank you so much for this video. So simple but SO helpful to those of us who aren't the most knowledgeable about things like this!

Funny.. Painters are painting the exterior of my house. They pulled the service disconnect today and installed it upside down. Just found this video...and figured out why the unit did not engage. Now i know!! All is well now! Thx

One of my mini-split ac stopped working while in use and won't power on again....I checked it's box and it's this type. I was totally confused at first cause 2 of the other boxes are the
simple light switch types. ...but I figured it out myself..pulled it out to flip it over once to turn off and then flipped it back to turn on and reset it...
and voila..it's back on. Just found this video to confirm that it's how it works. Thanks ...maybe I should of checked here first just to be safe.

Whoo Hoo! Just the answer to fix my issue. House was resided this summer. It must have been the siding crew that flipped the Stab Plug around!

Hey Kyle thanks for the video. I just moved into a new build home and last night it got hot in the house. I turned on the AC and felt air coming through the vents (not terrible cold or fast but still the unit was pushing air through).........however the temperature actually went higher even though the AC was on. This morning I found this video went outside and this disconnect was in the off position. I have now switched it to on hoping this will fix the cooling issue. Wonder why the builder or installer would leave it in the off position.

People do this but, If the appliance happen to be turned on and you insert the tab, it will suddenly be under load, it can be causing arc/sparks, melting or partially melting, the copper connectors. Should it be used then hmm?

What happens when u open that up and see that it’s all charged and melted? What’s the next step? What are some things that cause that fuse to blow and melt?
Is that stab only energized when the attic unit is telling it to turn on? Or is it energized all the time when the corresponding 2 pole breaker is turned on?
The service disconnect is energized with the corresponding breaker. The outdoor unit is has its own circuit and the indoor unit has a different circuit.
Why cant you touch anything other than the plug??
Any reason why randomly my AC outside unit doesnt turn on, and unplugging/ plugging the outside disconnector allows it to start back up as normal? The tech wasnt able to find an issue.
Turning power off to the system and turning it back on resets the computer on the outdoor board. Sounds like there is an intermittent code.

Where can i buy a stab plug ??? I need one and cant find anything 😐
Most vendors don’t sell just the stab/plug. We typically replace the whole disconnect or buy the same box and “borrow” the stab from the new one.

It’s not very often I don’t give a like ,but he should of explained where the power for the disconnect comes from, as my ac guy said there isn’t any power to the switch or to the ac breaker , which leads me to think there is another source that controls the power to the system..

When pulling out the "stab" plug, it may be a good idea to put it in your pocket while servicing any unit (preferably the shirt breast pocket and button it closed to prevent loss) to prevent an accidental connection while servicing. Be alert for air handlers that do not have a disconnect. The disconnect MUST be in FULL VIEW (not hidden or recessed to where it is not visible). On the condenser unit, the disconnect CANNOT be hidden by the unit. All disconnects must be in FULL VIEW. Any unit where you have to run back and forth to the breaker panel box is extremely dangerous.
Come on man, unless Maw and Paw did the electrical work, everything you said is just common sense. In addition, no electrical inspector, architect nor contractor will do something as stupid as to allow a power disconnect to be placed where an electrician cannot control when the power is on or off.
"Disconnects are not used for regular control of the circuit, but are employed as a safety precaution. The disconnect must be within sight from the AC unit to prevent someone who doesn't know the technician is working on the unit from turning the power on causing unit damage or human life concerns."
@@UFGator1972 I seen some air-handlers/furnaces that had NO visible disconnect. It was often located in the main panel, which was a good way from the unit. 220V can do damage to a unit very quickly and even worse, when you can't stop the current.
