    In this video I restore the wood trim on the right hand corner of the dash
    on our 300SD. This corner piece can be a challenge as the number of parts is greater than the others due to the 90 degree corner. Over the years the wood veneer trim on these cars starts to delaminate. It can be repaired with patience.
    Errors:
    After uploading the video I noticed that I had not fully inserted the AC vent into the duct, which has since been corrected.

    I need to do this piece as well. The aluminum separated from the backing, cleanly, and the underside still looks good, but a piece of the zebrano is missing, so I'll probably just end up going to pick n pull every time they get a 300 in lol.
    At least I can do the center console, the varnish just flaked off but the wood is good. And there's a bunch of other little trim pieces that just need corners glued back down but otherwise look nice still. I was trying to find an answer to what color varnish would match good, should have known to just check here first lol.
    All these videos should definitely be archived, most helpful guides for us non-professional folk who just tinker on the weekends and wanna make these old cars shine like they should.
    Appreciate ya as always!

    Amazing job... very labor intensive, but the w126 was one of the last "forever cars" that MB made, so definitely worth doing. Please share the brand and stain you used to match the original so perfectly!

    Can epoxy be used instead of polyurethane? Is Epoxy more durable?

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use epoxy to adhere the layers together because there are different materials. (wood to metal) I use high gloss polyurethane to top coat the outer layer of wood veneer because it is inexpensive, easy to use and durable.

      as a w126 owner I changed out my wood on my 300 SDL and 300SEL when I later purchased an ultra rare 500SEL with the 4 place seating option I just had the wood touched up however I did add trim pieces from performance products before they went bust and no longer supplied the w126 platform im currently working on my 500 SEC swapping out my walnut for chestnut wood however parts are on back order. Also giving it the AMG treatment with wheels and bodywork

    This was so hard to follow. To begin with he completely removed the veneer but didnt show how he removed the original coating.

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Would be happy to answer any questions. I did not remove the color coating of the original wood veneer completely. I did sand off the original shiny coat of laquer but I did not sand all the way through the coloring. I left it intact. I simply touched it up with additional stain and then applied a top coat of poly. I have a couple of other wood trim videos like this one. Recommend checking them out too because there is more info on top coating. This piece was basically broken in half and I spent much of my time figuring out how to reassemble it properly.

    What color stain do you use?

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind that I did not sand all of the old stain off. I applied a thin coat of red mahaganey by Minwax over the top of what was left of the old stain. It seemed to match the old stuff really well.

      @@ImpalamansGarage I had a gentleman bring me the piece from around the shifter to refinish out of a 1983 300SL. I got the clear off and the Zebra wood underneath was good and clear so the color seemed to be in the finish and the veneer not stained. He brought me the ashtray to help with matching. If I just clear it, it won't match and I'm having a hard time matching the color it was. The clear actually, for the most part, chipped off.
