  • Here we show you in detail how to install points and condensers on small engines. We demonstrate this on an Onan B series engine. Also be sure to watch our other video where we show you two correct methods to time a points ignition system on a small engine. We use a simple test light to o static timing and then use a ignition timing gun/light to time an engine while running in that video. Timing ignition is very important and completes the points and condenser replacement correctly.

    Great video, never came across anything about the points system being a common problem with these while chasing a rough run on my b43g jd318. Split and resealed the intake and have been messing with the carb for months and haven’t gotten anywhere. I have zero experience with points so I’ve been reluctant to even remove the cap & investigate, but thanks to this video I have the motivation to dig in to it.
    PS, don’t worry about little things like camera angles and heavy breathing, anybody watching these are more than grateful for your free time and knowledge. Keep it up and good luck with the channel 👍🏻

    Thank you for the video. I just replaced the points and condenser due to no spark. I had it all together but when I reinstalled the intake manifold it pulled out the wires on the condenser and coil. I was scratching my head. Operator manual has an arrow right over the wire and I couldn’t make it out. This video made it point blank easy.
    I have several Onan engines that I operate and I look forward to checking out your video series. New subscriber.👍🏻

    Nice video, I think on a 2 cylinder engine with a dual output coil the ignition fires every 360 degrees of rotation. So the coil fires every TDC making finding the compression stroke unnecessary. on a single cyc TDC - compression does need to be identified.

      Thanks and thanks for the comment. The system in the example has a wasted spark yes. It fires on compression and exhaust stroke. But like we said in the video this is how we do it every time to be consistent and sure on all engines. As most times when we are doing points we have the heads off too for decarbon and valve adjustment so we do the adjustment at TDC compression stroke as well. Keeps things consistent with consistent results and multi task with it at TDC compression lol. Also this video was to show how to do the points in general on most small engines as to show operation and principle of the system. As you said on some models you HAVE to be at TDC compression stroke or where ever the manufacturer recommends. So we figure just being TDC compression every time works for 95 percent of engines.

    Great video. Mine starts and runs for about 3 to 4 minutes then shuts off. I’m wondering if it’s the condenser.

      Hi thank you. What model engine? When running does it run well? Does it shut right off or sputter out?

      @@thomasreece3903 Could be coil, could be fuel pump or could be vapor locking.Maybe spark module. You need to do some diagnostic and see if you are loosing spark when this happens.

    Hello Sr. My 318 has a B48G installed since I’ve got it and it has been running great. This week it just stopped running and in my troubleshooting I found out I had no spark. I figured it would be the condenser or the points and since they were old I ordered new ones. Now as I was replacing that while turning the engine by hand to fine tune the points I noticed that the plunge was not going up and down, so I started to look further and it seems like the camshaft isn’t turning as I turn the engine. What could it be? Maybe that trust wash let it loose or could it be something even worse than that? Recent oil changes all good and no weird noise up to this point that could indicate something terrible was going on. Any guidance will be much appreciated.

      Hi, sorry to hear. I assume your valves are not all opening since you said it seems not to be turning. If the valves too are not opening I'm going to guess your cam broke or possibly gear issues. Best of luck

      @@caseingersolltractorsnortheast thanks. Yeah, I’m going to pull the valve covers next to see if there is any movement there. Never the less I need to pull the engine out no matter what, best case scenario the camshaft gear disengaged, worst it’s broken and I need a new one 🫤 right?

    • @caseingersolltractorsnortheast
      @caseingersolltractorsnortheast  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @felipeengelmann9636 yes if the valves are not moving. If they are then could be the plunger for the points has issues or lobe is bad. Cam bearings wear and can be a issue
