      Well if you consider how Britain came to become what Britain is, they defo owe us tho. They would be absolutely nothing without Africa, so ofc we shouldn't expect it but that's because of RACISM not coz of our %, if you look at SA, there's a small % of white ppl but look how much they own. It's about power.

    The problem with the plastic surgery thing is the message it’s sending to the younger generation especially young women, basically saying this is the only acceptable type of body. It’s a lack of self esteem. Does it come with some immediate benefits? Yes. But the beauty standard changes every 10 years anyway. Do you now start to change your body anytime the standards change again? And once you get one thing done, you want to get another insecurity taken care off, it’s a never ending cycle.....

    Poet reducing surgery to begging friends is soo simple minded. Women are primarily judged by their beauty/looks whilst men are judged by their finances/ability to provide. Pretty privilege is real. Ppl struggle to admit that being an average looking woman is ALOT harder than being an average looking man. Women wanting the pretty status goes beyond superficial reasons. Being pretty can affect the quality of your husband, your social circle and career etc.

    Unfortunately equality of opportunity is being confused with equality of outcome because the establishment has been so discriminatory to this point that in order for them to show that they are providing an equal opportunity, they feel (for good or bad) that they have to make the outcome be in favour of those previously being discriminated against.

    • @osas2888
      @osas2888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Equality of opportunity necessarily leads to equality of outcome, unless one group is inherently inferior to the other. And whilst it's very hard to measure opportunity, it's easy to measure outcome. So we just look for equality of outcome

    • @CB-dl1vg
      @CB-dl1vg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@osas2888 Not true. One group doesn't have to be inferior, they could just have different interests compared to another group and are therefore more likely to unequally distribute themselves into a system as they tend to go with what theyre interested in. Clinical psychologists have been publishing papers on personality psychology for years that get into the nuance of this stuff

    • @osas2888
      @osas2888 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CB-dl1vg yeah but let's not pretend that's what is distinguishing here. Maybe between men and women as women prefer to work in selfless roles that might be underpaid. But that's not what distinguishes black and white or white and latino. If anything the opposite

    • @CB-dl1vg
      @CB-dl1vg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@osas2888 I agree to an extent but you could argue that cultural differenced could play a factor. For example, there is a disproportionate number of Nigerian doctors and lawyers in western countries. Its not that the 'system' is preferentially picking Nigerians for these roles, its the cultural pressure that Nigerian parents place on their children that drive this disparity. In the US there is a disproportionate number if Asian American students at Ivy league universities and this disparity is driven more by cultural differences rather than discrimination against non Asians
      Human beings are incredibly complex and its too simple to say "were all just the same and any differences you see is due to racism etc". So there never going to the equality of outcome and thats okay, its not necessarily evidence for racism

    • @osas2888
      @osas2888 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CB-dl1vg Yeah I understand your point. In that sense, equality of outcome doesn't make much sense. But we should aim for equality of opportunity unless there are factors regarding personal preference/culture (e.g. certain people's wanting their kids to be doctors/lawyers) that lead to differing outcomes even with equal opportunity. The problem is that minorities' culture/preference differences should see them more likely to end up in top positions as they tend to be more driven by significant economic outcomes than natives. But instead we see the reverse. So you could argue we should aim for equality of outcome unless those with lesser outcomes are driven by factors that would reduce their outcomes, but since this is not the case then we can still aim for equality of outcome. But of course, the idea that minorites are driven by economic outcome and well motivated is based on anecdotal evidence and it's hard to obtain hard evidence for. Moreover, once we start analysing culture and work ethic etc. things can start to get controversial. I think your point is valid.

    Some great conversations going on in this episode. But I’m now 40mins in and you’ve completely missed the mark on one point. You cannot compare getting surgery because you’re unhappy with your appearance/shape, to bleaching your skin as a result of colourism. Your place in society isn’t so much affected by being unattractive or somewhat meedi, as it is when you are dark-skinned. Especially a dark-skinned black woman. Very important to remember that colourism is a product of racism that was birthed during slavery and shouldn’t be discussed so flippantly.

    • @natemclarke

      Ngl they lost me at that part entirely. Surgery is not for everyone - to each their own

    • @DrAlchem01
      @DrAlchem01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree 100% there's a lot more to unpack when discussing colourism and its roots
      That said, it's been widely documented that attractive people are more likely to be interview for roles, more likely to be promoted, more likely to score well in exams (throughout education up to Higher/University), and ultimately more likely to be seen as trustworthy and kind in general. Harvard Business Review has an article with multiple sources/linked studies that will spin your head lol pretty privelege is real

    The discussion on race relations was interesting. Simply too simplistic - will be great to hear from yourselves along side someone like Akala. I think often about starting again, the world is a mess but in terms of modern history white west European people hold the monopoly on violence, creating wild hierarchical structures and discrimination far and near for their own advancement. I agree that if we are to be objective as a minority ethnic group it would perhaps be entitled to expect representation beyond that on screen and in other places. However that’s not the biggest problem for everyday people - black people are often limited because of perceived prejudice or treated poorly by the system. We don’t deserve such treatment and should be free to achieve and get high quality service as citizens of this country whether from the NHS or the police . A final point is - where do factor in repatriations and/or admission of the contribution black people have made to this country? We are a minority ethnic group but our contribution to this country whether via slave trade or when it was at its lowest in war recovery wasn’t a minority contribution and the treatment of those contributors is only now being treated as a national scandal. I’m not going to get into the culture culture/cultural appropriation issues.

The point is men have these conversations all the time, they don't agree with BBLs, lip fillers, cheek fillers, Botox etc etc girls should be natural they shouldn't feel pressurised .. then the same men thirst after women with all of this, we're obviously not talking about all men, it's a specific generation community etc, you only have to spend a day on insta to see this lol. That's why I genuinely don't think people should have Instagram if they are insecure, unless it's for business. Most women only have these procedures because of their environment and what they see online, hence why they all look the same .. literally, the same.

    Regarding the Yxng Bane segment, I think it simply
    comes down to how fickle both the music industry
    and listeners are. Chewed up and spat out. People
    are always out for what's new and what's next,
    hence even the big dogs/household names
    jump on trends and ride waves to maintain
    relevance in the mainstream music space.
    But someone like a Kojey Radical or Loyle
    Carner have built a solid fanbase who like
    something specific they bring to the table
    and thus they're more loyal, and maybe
    some underground artists are content
    with their smaller number of patrons.

    Comments on Angelina Jolie... She had bare work done to look how she looked during her highest piece of fame in Hollywood..
    We need to get in our heads that these Hollywood acts / artists dont look like that inna real life..
    It's all photoshop and plastic surgery man...
    Our natural state is beautiful!

    People ignore the role that race plays, it plays a MASSIVE one in basically everything. So it has got to do with this. If you look historically, you start to see a pattern. The same with gender. The same with class. It is mad.
    01:06:00 I would say that people aren't necessarily entitled but they aren't aware of the fact that we can try but we will get swindled because they won't let us do or be certain things. I also think that it is easy to say its an approval ting and IT IS don't get me wrong but Black women be struggling in their own community, so it is double peak so meh. And lastly, people got quiet not coz of the second Black girl but because people just wanted to say hey its happened again, it was a virtual side eye to each other and then everyone just said Kaz just do whatever coz no one was shocked at all or even too bothered it was just that everyone was pointing out the combo that Love Island has racked up and its slyly funny I'm negl, then the new girl came in and they were like what's she gonna do BUT AGAIN WE ALL KNEW (BIG SIDE EYE) THAT BOTH GUYS WOULD SHEG HER ANYWAYS, twitter is too funny💀 but defo, gotta grow our own place but when they do come over... CLOSE THE BLOODCLART DOOR. Idgaf. Sorry but idgaf 😗 in fact we should strengthen the vibes and connection with the diaspora and the continent.

    I feel like Bane's music similar to that of J Hus or Kojo Funds was made for the clubs especially the Afro-Caribbean/ Black Uni raves...That's where I found him. Fine Wine, Rihanna, Vroom - These tunes TEAR UP the parties man. Really wished he made more tunes in that vibe. But I guess COVID did have an effect on the kind of mood musicially he was in.

    I hear Poet, but in a LOT of industries black people are just as good and in some instances better than their colleagues and are still not moving up and held back, so on the occasions where the black person gets that opportunity, take the job and so be it, otherwise what's the alternative sit and wait for years and years whilst everyone passes you by, sadly this is the experience for a lot of black people and if the system was fair in the first place there wouldn't be a need for this to happen 🤷🏽‍♀️

    Maybe those women get triggered because the culture our society is telling them this is what they need feel/look better/attract more of the opposite sex, yet a man is then saying they don't like it so they then have to defend it because "but this is what we've been told is good for us"
