I've been learning Daz and I feel like I leveled up after watching this. Quick and to the point, very nice guide!

Nice. I've seen something similar done in other 3D programs and it seems to work well.

Hey there, awesome tutorial as well as the one on camera settings! Only thing I noticed was that it didn’t work until I set the colour I believe and obviously only when viewing from iray, other than that really neat technique! Thanks

Hi, Steven. Thanks a lot for all videos that you post, help me a lot. Is there any way I can have a preview of the light emitted by a primitive in texture shade ?

Not that I'm aware of. Actually, that's been annoying me for quite some time. I'm working on a figuring out a workaround right now, but at the moment the best that I've come up with is to put in a scene light, such as a spotlight or point light, and turn the lumens down relatively low. This usually gives me enough light to see in texture shaded view, but it usually doesn't show up (at least not much) in iray view or the final render. You can also just turn off the light's emitter when you are in iray view. That's the best option I have right now, but I'll be sure keep you posted if I come up with a better idea.

@@StevenDavid83 thanks a lot. I really don't like that part of lighting in Daz3d very much, so I prefer to export the models and work on that in 3ds max, and render with vray.

I know I'm writing very late, but maybe the problem is that you put the auto headlamp on the machine and you need to change it to "never"😁

Why have you not made more tutorials? Whats better, primitive lighting or spotlights and such? I also have a question about animation in daz, do you know any good tutorials for that, could you make one(s)?

Thanks for the comment. I originally paused making tutorials because I moved, then started a new job and didn't have very much time for making videos. I think I'm about to get back into it though. I think I may also do tutorials on Ren'Py and general Python programming.
As far as the lighting, I primarily use primitives for general lighting, but I use scene lights for more specific purposes. For instance, If I want to simulate light coming from a lamp, I'll use a point light. Or a spot light if I want to highlight a specific character in the scene.
For lighting the entire scene, I almost always use primitives.

@@dalair Lol. I have a Patreon for a visual novel, but I've been considering setting one up for tutorial videos. If I do that, as soon as I get my first patron, I'll Paypal you $6 for a latte. ;-)

When I followed the same step -- go to render settings, change from "dome and scene" to "scene only" -- I did not get the same result. Here, the character goes dark and becomes just a silhouette in the video. In my DAZ studio, that did not happen. The light remained totally unchanged.

You probably have light emitting from whatever set you're using? Or somewhere else in your setup? That's my guess. Changing to "scene only" means that the only light DAZ recognizes is the light coming from parts of the scene (not the default sky dome, or any sky HDRI textures you may have loaded). If your light is unchanged in "Scene Only", then you probably have additional light sources that are built into whatever set you're using, lighting the scene. Good luck!

Also -- the Preview Lights typically come on by default when DAZ starts. You can turn them off under the Window menu in DAZ, or by hitting Ctrl+L inside DAZ. You may also want to check that your Auto-Headlamp is turned off in DAZ. This is a light that defaults to your camera's position, and it's pretty much useless, except for screwing up scene lighting. You'll want to toggle it off in DAZ and leave it off. Cheers!

Greeting. I've followed the instructions step by step on your video plus others and I'm not getting any light at all in my scene from the primitive. I see the plane light up when I dbl click Emissive and adjust the settings as instructed and still no light. even after adjusting to Luminace to 200000. still no effect. is there a setting some where thats not allowing the light? any help is greatly appreciated.

You may need to reset your Render/Environment settings. Make sure you are on Scene only.

Also probably set colour and make sure you’re viewing from iray;)

I'm sorry for not replying to this sooner! If anyone is having a similar problem, the previous suggestions are definitely things to check out (reset render/environment settings, and make sure you're viewing from iray). I would add that you should turn on 'double-sided light' under the surfaces--editor tab on the right. By default, only one side of the plane produces light, and I believe it's the top of the plane. If you raise the plane above the ground the light will be casting upward, probably above where the camera is pointed. If there isn't a ceiling or something else to reflect the light, it will look light there isn't light casting at all. Hope this helps!

for some reason doesnt work for me. i cut a white cube with emissive , cranked it really high, but only the hair gets lit(in a very strange way. all the skin is pitch black. in rendering i got it set for scene

Make sure that you're using Iray for the scene preview. If you use texture shading or another preview method, the primitive lights won't always show up.

Steven , I got the same problem that others are having. I tried all the suggestions and still can't see any difference on figure when adjusting perimeters of the plane only see it when it is rendered . The figure remains black.. Any other suggestions?

are you viewing your scene in texture shaded or Iray? if you view your scene in anything other than Iray it will always show everything as just black, only when Iray is on do you see the lighting doing its effects. it's annoying for sure
