They last made the Billboard charts in 1968, but continued on with other personnel in England.

My personal favorite by Ben E. King was "Spanish Harlem", but "Save The Last Dance For Me", "There Goes My Baby" and "This Magic Moment" are also great songs. The era of the greatest pop/rock singers. Understand, black singers and performers of the time didn't get the job done in spite of the racism of the times, we flourished because of it. R&B was our music and it was part of the struggle and the movement. We had to invent our own separate musics, arts and culture. We had to invent jazz, R&B, rock and roll, and the blues. We had to invent modern tap dancing and the modern way of singing. We had no choice and it made us who we are.
Oh wow, I love all those songs, didn't connect that they were all sung by him. Growing up hearing it all on the radio as a kid, I didn't connect a lot of singers with their songs, it's only now watching reactions that I'm finally making those connections as an adult and realising just which singers i really like

Music was different back then and singers and groups had to learn how to sing and perform, with and without microphones, before they ever made a recording. Ben E. King was a member of The Drifters before becoming a solo artist. With The Drifters he did "Save The Last Dance For Me", "Count The Tears", "Dance With Me", "There Goes My Baby", and "This Magic Moment".
After he left the Drifters, did they continue on as a group?
@@angelika_munkastrap4634 Oh yes. They had some incredible hits such as "Saturday Night At The Movies", "Under The Boardwalk", "Up On The Roof" and "On Broadway". I'm sure you've heard most of these too. I saw these guys just after King left them. Now ask me who were the great singers of that era.
Ohhhh yes, Under the Boardwalk is one of my fave songs of all time. And the other three songs are great too, wow, had no idea rhe were all Drifters songs, will need to iTunes all these immediately, so after he left who became lead singer then?

One of the first times I heard this, I was sitting with my girlfriend in the early 60s, enjoying this wonderful song. Now we have 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Now THAT is a song!

Old School music is romantic, it always has a way of painting a picture in your mind as you listen to the story-line!!! Enjoy it, because there will never be anything like it again!!!
It’s not the mainstream music of today, but it’s pretty cynical to think that there will never be a renaissance of this type of music. In fact, many people make music like this today but you have to look hard to find them. I would recommend Pain and Misery by the Teskey Brothers to restore your hope

Big reason why people still listen to this song is 1986 movie Stand By Me and its child actors who later became famous for various reasons. The movie was somewhat of a generation experience for Gen X.
I wasn’t born yet but this song gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. When you start shaking your head. I always do the same thing because the song is so powerful you feel like you want to cry especially when the orchestra is playing at the end. Its so beautiful ♥️

Music of the 60s and 70s was the golden age of music. Nothing in this century comes close.

I was born in England and and was around 10 when this came out. My older sister was a teenager and bought the record. I hear what you’re saying about how black people kept making music even though the racism was really bad still. There were a lot of people then that didn’t care what skin colour a person had, they just cared about the music. My parents were racist and objected to what we were listening to, and that was true for a lot of young people and their parents. But it was the 60’s and there were so many young people who no longer cared what their parents dictated. We earned our own money working in corner shops and movie theatres, etc, and were going to buy what we wanted, and the technology existed (portable record players), that we could listen to it and enjoy it without their ability to control us. It was a tsunami of a youth movement which couldn’t be controlled. any more. And it just got better and better until somewhere in the 90’s and I don’t know what happened, but ever since then, bit by bit, the divisions are returning. My heart weeps.
The systemic divisions were always there. Read about Jim Crow laws in America- Black Americans lived in genuine apartheid. And as America gets more diverse , there are white supremacist structures like the Police, who are fighting these good changes with everything they have.
This is one of those recordings that will never ever die. In 1000 years, when only a handful of songs from the 20th century survive, this will be one of them. An absolute masterpiece.

If I understood your question correctly: those instruments that came in at around 4:20 are violins. They are very dependable for eliciting a very emotional response.

You will find MUCH wonderful music during "the Elvis era" -- the years from 1953 (when Elvis cut his first record) until he died in 1977. There were SO MANY great singers (including Elvis) and songwriters during those 24 years...and SO MANY memorable songs. If modern artists produced music like "Stand By Me," fans would eat it up! It doesn't get any better than The Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk."

I am a 60’s baby & I have heard this all my life. Love Ben E. King. I am not sure what decade he is from but, I love Jackie Wilson. His song “Lonely Teardrops “ is awesome. I remember when my kids & my sister’s kids were little ( my niece is around ur age & the youngest). I would go over every once in a while & we would play older music. My niece fell in love with “Lonely Teardrops “ around age 3. I love music ssssooooooo much & I tried to make sure my babies knew of all the music I knew.
I love Jackie Wilson! The film La Bamba (1987) also had "Jackie Wilson" perform this song on stage. I was born in 78, so my little sisters and I would love dancing in the living room to this one.
That voice, and the way the bass and the string section work together. Just magic. Such a powerful song, and one that's still regularly used to show support for and solidity with people in times of trouble. Oh and if you want to see the sort of conditions that black artists went through in the 50s and 60s, I recommend watching the movie "Ray". It's a biopic of legendary pianist Ray Charles and it's a real eye opener, as well as a great movie.

Curious...when you listen to the music of "my generation"....does it make you look at us a bit differently, or think about how we were influenced? Because this music influenced a whole generation, as the music of the 70s did also.
Hey, hope you don’t mind me answering this question. Im 19 years old and I listen to nothing but classics from 30s all the way to the 70s. My dad is in his 60s, so a lot of of the music he grew up on influenced me a lot. Whenever I listen to these songs from back in the day, it makes me hate my generation. You can tell values have changed just by what they talk about in the music nowadays. I would give anything to go back and time and live through the 70s. Plus people use way to much autotune today🤢 biggest turn off for me👎. I even admire the fashion from back then.

I grew up listening to my parents music, all different genres from country to Elvis etc. Things were quite different as far as music subjects, most told a story, even our hard rock and roll. Performers had natural talent. We also had influences such as our grandparents, moral values, family values, spiritual values... There is nothing new under the sun, I notice some of those fashions are back! Thank you for responding to my post. What we hear, see and value should add to your life in a positive way and I believe you have found something of great value in the "old" music. It is timeless. You have been blessed to find joy in something from the past which is still relevant today!

I get what you're saying. R&b singers from the 60s up through the 80s just had a different sound along with an incredible level of talent. I think it's their delivery that makes it so good to me. It's just exciting to listen to even in a slow song like this

Ben E. King was a LEGEND! He came from humble roots, a sharecroppers son who had to struggle to make his way in the world. He grew up in a time of horrible prejudice, he came from Mississippi. He was a wonderful man that shared his God given talent with the world and never let the prejudice's of the people around him darken his life. I met him after a concert shortly before he died and he was such a nice man. He truly is a man to be admired and emulated. He was one of the Greats.
I watch ur videos fairly often but I think you hit the nail on the head when u said ...despite the racism they didn't let it stop them. THAT IS truly the best lesson from that time. As a human being there will always be obstacles, always. But NOTHING gives anyone an excuse to just give up and blame shift like some black people are in the habit of today. Obstacles are necessary to bring out the greatness in each of us. We may not like it but they make you stronger. Thanks for appreciating what came b4 you. It's good to see. God bless you.

Easily one of the most gorgeous things ever recorded. You can interpretate the lyrics in so many ways, you can relate it to a spouse or a friend or even the struggle for civil rights even though Ben wrote it because he felt sad about his band because he was going solo.
Like all timeless songs it will outlive us all and find a new audience over and over again

This 67 year old Canadian white woman and her friends listened to this “old black music” all the time, along with led zeppelin the eagles abba etc. This music was the best for making people happy and are great to sing along with, even when we could not hold a tune. Everyone loved and still loves this music.

This is one of the greatest songs of all time! To me, this is what a musical genius sounds like.
At almost 73, I can honestly say we had the BEST music, from the 50's through the 70's. We knew unmoderated sounds. No auto tune, no computer checks and balances. Just pure talent.
What draws you to this music is the vocal clarity that a pure singer, backed by kickass musicians, no electrical or digital manipulation.
