    Muscle Musium live @ Glastonbury 2004. The end of that song is a great example of Matt using his voice as a guitar.

  • @json_bourne3812
    @json_bourne3812 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    A great example of his "mixing" of the voice and guitar is Muscle Museum - at the end of the last chorus, his final "ye-e-eah" kind of leads into the guitar solo and then they stay together - I would highly recommend. During an interview he even speaks on the fact he kind of "accidentally" or "automatically naturally" led the voice into the guitar and when he noticed that he just went with it. One of my favourite songs of theirs.

      @crustyjpeg7064 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The "guitar solo" in Muscle Museum is actully entirely Matt's voice distorted to hell and back. IIRC it was originally going to be a guitar solo but Matt's guitar malfunctioned or something during recording so he just sang/screamed the solo through his guitar setup, and wound up liking the result enough to put it on the album.
      It's a lot clearer that it's him singing on live versions as he uses a much milder, more ordinary vocal distortion effect live.

    This was such a late live show for this song, you better listen to 1999/2000 versions of Showbiz, Matt's voice and their overall sound suited way more this type of song.

      I don't like that first performances,Matt was singing too uncontrollable and his guitar playing wasn't as good,they've improved so much in just 2 years so hullabaloo is much better

      @nerea4327 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it’s even more impressive that he can still hit that note (and with better technique) at this age.

    • @Neorigg
      @Neorigg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nerea4327 he can’t and this is why they played it in a lower key than the original

    • @Neorigg
      @Neorigg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nerea4327 also he puts a lot of effects on his voice right now (especially distortion) to make up for the lack of fullness in his high notes and he always starts the notes later than on the original song because he can’t breath support it for too long. So no he doesn’t sing as good as he use to

    • @willeh1947
      @willeh1947 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Neorigg half step down yes. But he can still definitely hit that note. In a concert somewhat recently (2015/16?) during Ashamed he hits like a C6. Showbiz is a G#5 (G5 for this performance). So he can definitely still hit it if he wants to, he most likely just doesn’t to prolong his voice. Even their later tracks still feature high vocals (G5 on Survival for instance, I’m sure there’s some off Simulation Theory or Drones I’m forgetting.) EDIT: Get up and Fight features pretty high vocals at the end, seems about on par with Showbiz.

    Matt has been doing this for more than 20 years. Even on studio version of Muscle Museum he sang guitar solo into guitar amp instead of playing it on a guitar. On live gigs he puts guitar distortion pedal on vocal for that beefy overdriven sound.

  • @Neorigg

    towards the end he was it was entirely his voice you were hearing, he was strumming power chords on the guitar meanwhile

  • @reylui0250
    @reylui0250 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    when he confuses the voice with the guitar... if he listened well he could have listen what the guitar was doing (just chords), and watching the arm of Matt going up and down very fast. So he wasn't doing any melody with the guitar, it was just his voice doing the melody line

    Matt has a five octave range, and he uses an overdrive pedal in his vox chain to make that screaming human-guitar sound. It isn't a vocoder.

    • @Norce555
      @Norce555 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      lol Matt absolutely doesn't have a five octave range. Four if you count the absolutely extremes including aimless screams, and 3 if you only look at what he can reliably use conciously.

    The live version at Reading Festival 2006 I think is better because Matt was younger and had a better voice. Later versions I'm not saying they are bad but 2004 - 2010 I consider their best time. This live transmits sound quality and the maturity that the band has. Good video

    Nope you're not tripping, he does that. I have done that as well several times, mostly to improve tone and hitting higher notes. Its easier to follow a guitar up the neck while hitting note after note vocally matching the same octave it is in. Plus you can move around a guitar much easier while gradually going up to the note you want to hit. The guitar is usually started on E2 for thick string, by the time you get up to the thin E string those are the 5th octave. For a guy anything higher starts turning into whistle notes.
    Its cool and fun, and yeah people find it odd when I do it too.

    I was at Reading that year, this show was one of the best experiences of my life.
    Fun fact, this was the 3rd time (2nd time was apparently at Leeds a few days before) they had played this song since 2006 (the 1st being at the Shepherds Bush Empire by-request gig about a week earlier), they also had Brian Johnson come and sing Back in Black with them, also worth a watch.
    And yeah you're not wrong, he is actually singing the bit where it sounds like a guitar (at 10:24). He's been known to do this with songs in the past, both live and in studio albums - have a listen to the bridge in Muscle Museum, you almost can't tell what's guitar and what's actually vocals in that song sometimes.

    The flow in Matt's performance and the range on that young boy back then was something else!

    Been a fan since they came out with their first album Showbiz and this song blew me away! Watching them grow and progress through the years had been great, however I personally prefer their first 3 albums. I regard Absolution as their magnum Opus, after that you can tell it became more commercial. Happens to most artists unfortunately. Seem them countless of times live. Spoke to Matt and Chris through ps3 online while playing COD modern warfare 2. Even had a jam 😊 best band of this time.

    Bitch, MUSE's first ever live gig was as warm-up for Coldplay. And just like Coldplay, MUSE's successful singles are pure radiogarbage shite (Starlight etc.) but both bands have tons of respectable songs on the actual albums. Hell, Crests of Waves by Coldplay is better than most bands singles and it was a B-side not even on an album.
