I loved the 5 repetitions of scenario in this book, which I don't think I've encountered since reading Children's Books to our daughter. I loved the Small is Beautiful theme.

There was something almost magical and very comforting about the repetitions

Thank you. I'll try to get this when it comes out. Have you tried "Before the Coffee Gets Cold" by Toshikazu Kawaguchi? It's about a coffee shop in Tokyo where you can go back in time, but only until the coffee gets cold, and nothing that happens in the past can change the present. What it's really about is people finding redemption. I thought it was beautiful. The follow up novel I didn't find as interesting (sequalitis) but I really liked this first one.

Yes, I have read that one and I really enjoyed it. I do keep meaning to pick up the sequels but other books always leap in to my arms instead.

I had high expectations for the book since it received such high praise, but to be honest, it turned out to be a disappointment for me. While the theme and the stories are cozy and nice, the blatant fatphobia drove me crazy each time and prevented me from truly enjoying the book...

I didn't feel that - I felt that the librarian was a warm and caring person

It was other people who had these thoughts toward the librarian. In the second story, with the character named Ryo, his first thoughts upon seeing her were: "She was very big and looked like she was going to explode. With a head that seemed to have no chin, and her clothes and skin both white, she looked like the marshmallow man from the Ghostbusters." He even keeps calling her "marshmallow man" in his head. Similar thoughts are written about the librarian upon first seeing her in all the stories, which made me feel mad. While they were having these beyond rude thoughts, she was the one who helped them, even giving them gifts and words of encouragement they didn’t deserve for having such thoughts about her.

To be honest, I'd forgotten that - I read it about 18 months ago and remembered her warmth and kindness. I'd totally forgotten the comments made about her, so I see what you mean. Why include comments that are so 'hurtful' ? What purpose do they serve?

@@millysbookshelf2101 To be honest, while reading the book, I felt that the author didn't include those comments to suggest that such thoughts were wrong. Instead, it seemed that, according to her, those comments were completely normal. Japan doesn't have many people who are overweight, and unfortunately, there are toxic beauty standards around weight. As a result, it's not even rare for people to have those kinds of thoughts so those comments were simply their first thoughts upon seeing the kind librarian, and nothing more. They served no other purpose except for a heartless depiction.

      That’s something I wasn’t aware of
