    This must be a good thing.
    It's clear that New Zealand's supermarkets have been price gouging for ages - at the very least, this should make them behave themselves much better

      See the roast chickens in pack and save for 15 dollars....in costco today I paid 8 dollars and was triple the size of those in the local supermarkets

      @@colingander3051 kiwis have been ripping each other off for ages, look at fonterra a global kiwi company, GLOBAL...and it bludges of the government when it hits hard times, our taxes, then they up the prices on our dairy products, disgustingly greedy shareholders!!

    As someone who lived in the Philippines as a kid (my parents had a job there) and the USA (my husband is American), I've actually grown up seeing bulk-buy supermarket chains and hypermarkets such as Costco, Walmart and SM Hypermarket (in the Philippines) as just a norm.
    Like, back in the States I recall there being these massive car parks surrounding one massive Walmart or Meijer in the centre.
    That said, after years living overseas, when I moved back to New Zealand, it kinda surprised me how expensive groceries were, and how limited our options were compared to the US or Philippines.

    Much cheaper to have a Gilmours Membership Card than a Costco Card. Only downside is that you can't charge it to your account at other Gilmours Store. However you can charge it to your Farmlands Card. So Gilmours a huge high five in my books!!!!!!

    I just spent 1k there today, I believe I was not the only one who went over the 1k mark, its quite easy to spend a lot as you are buying bulk, but things I bought will last for a very long time

      @@almac9203 The hot dog was sold out, do you mean the roast chicken? Its huge! the other supermarkets are ripping us off, I bought a tine roast chicken in packNSave the day before for 14 dollars, tiny, in Costco is only 7.99!!! and HUGE!! I still have some in the fridge

      @@edineujunior no the chicken bake is a burrito like roll that is baked and full of a creamy chicken filling. If you search Costco Chicken bake you will see videos of people eating this food. It looks delicious and they sell it in the American and Australian Costco alongside the hot dogs. BTW that Costco roast chicken you described sounds like amazing value.

      As long as you got a good "per unit" price, it's okay. Shame that the rotisserie chicken is almost $8 there. In the USA it's only $5. My family buys 2 every week and we use it for sandwich wraps then use the bones to make chicken soup. Totally worth it.

      @@chelseakerr2981 my local supermarket was a 1 dollar a kg cheaper on drumsticks per kg and I didn't have to buy 5 kg. NZ grass feed scotch is only 47 kg their Aussie grain feed scotch 69

    this should create a better competition and create much better compettitivemnes change, i am very sure many will draw away from pak n save and countdown and others due to seeing price changes because they will draw conclusion of why did you not price drop before ? quite simply because they have been greedy for profit no other reason , giver it 6 months you will see much change !

    In my opinion, NZ need more competition in big groceries stores i.e Costco, Hypermart, Carrefour etc as currently it is dominated by 2 business giants only.

    Sounds like a load of crap to me, American processed food and plastic junk. Most of the shoppers looked overweight or ethnic, not usually the type who should be spending up large. Who in their right mind would pay $60 to join a shop, its a rort. For those who don't know, Kirkland is part of Seattle, USA.

      It's not PART of Seattle, it is based in Seattle. I pay 110.00 for my membership and it's totally worth it. Just got my three pairs of prescription glasses at Costco for under 800.00 and at other places it would be over 2,000.00. I know, I spent it the last few years because I didn't like the frames Costco was offering. They have upgraded their styles a lot.

    At Costco in Canada we could buy a quality Kiwi lambskin jacket for $350 and 1kg Manuka honey for $60. Hope Kiwis get the same good deals after being screwed over for years.

      That's what I was wishing, but after going out to Costco on opening day, I'm not so sure. It's bulk buying but expensive groceries. More so for businesses and people who do monthly shopping, which in real time means big spend. I mean i worked out some of the prices of everyday essential items, it's cheaper out south than Costco. So no thanks I'll stick to my local stores.

      @@skamony2001 well I don't live in NZ, but in my country what I do is take public transport as close to the store as possible, do my shopping and then take an Uber back with my groceries in the trunk. The Uber driver will usually help you unload the car as well.

      @@skamony2001 and yeah it's only worth it if you buy enough stuff. For me I buy about 6 weeks worth of food, plus about 20 new clothes. That's enough to justify the cost for Uber.

      not really, there is a small section with large pots, but they appear to be (of great quality) cheaper then if you would buy them in miter10 etc.

      No, but they do sell plants from time to time. Now, here we are heading into fall so it's Mums. They also sell Christmas trees, real and fake.

    Saw some coffins displays in New Zealand Costco yesterday on the opening. Have been to US and Australia Costco they dont have such a thing and why in New Zealand having it in their store. Are selling coffins too in Costco. What a Feng Shui😨

    Too much stuff. From all over the world. Is it really necessary, consumerism? Will the profits be going outside New Zealand instead of supporting New Zealand people? Don’t think big box stores are a positive thing. I liked it better when there were small locally owned shops. The character, the connection, local people and goods, seemed to be much better than today

      When I lived in New Jersey there was a Costco, Walmart and Sams club within a mile of each other. If you went to all three the differences in quality and service in Costco was so much better with Walmart the worst
