      Some people buy based on what they can afford, so don't buy an Audi if you can't afford it.

    They did an uphill battle between the S4, the EVO, and the TL with a professional driver. Surprisingly, the TL came on top despite having less power, no turbo, and a softer suspension. That tells a lot about the SH-AWD system, you can have a tL looking as modane as can be but still able to beat, pricey juiced up germans cars, and rally oriented beasts in the twisties.

    Great video.I have a 2012 TL and am enjoying the experience. While the European cars offer a wonderful driving expeince... I agree it is not worth $20K more than the Acura. It takes journalistic guts to pick an Acura over any of the exalted Bavarian cars. For me the reliablity and value of the Acura are more important than the slight edge the Audi has in the road experince

    • @louiedomingueziv6923
      @louiedomingueziv6923 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Portia Moore Nobody ever said it would, you're missing the point, people who buy Audi don't buy them so that it could outlast a Honda. I bought my 93 Accord in 1993, it's tunned and runs top notch (H22). I bought my first Audi A4 3.0 in 2002 (currently 207k and still runs beautifully), and my 2nd Audi a month ago. I buy Audi for class, I've worked my ass off to able to afford them and their maintenance. But just like anything else, it will last long as long as you take care of it! Most anyone with a decent job can drive a Acura (current model), not everyone can drive a Audi (current model). I know, I use to be one.

    • @TheTitan1530
      @TheTitan1530 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      wtf.. you started off with a great point but slowly took another direction. Acura's start at different price points just like Audi's do. You can either get an expensive Acura sedan (RLX) or get an entry level (ILX). Which is the same case for Audi's. I don't even understand your point, you buy an Audi because it's a 'class' car? You buy cars based on their price tag? You don't look at value? The argument in the video was of value. For 20k less and for 90% of the A7 you can get a TL. The TL and A7 are not even direct competitors as they start at different price ranges.

    • @louiedomingueziv6923
      @louiedomingueziv6923 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheTitan1530 If I want value, gas mileage etc. I'd buy a Acura/Honda, which I've done. If I want class, I'd buy an Audi, Benz or Beamer. Never an Acura, My opinion. I just don't think of class when the name Acura comes to mind. And no I don't buy cars based on their price tag, that was retarded, I buy them based on the criteria that I have when shopping for one. If it fits my budget, I buy... Period! Oh, and if you're buying a TL, chances are that's because that's all that person can afford. If a person has A7 money, guess what? that person is getting an A7... Again... Period! And no... You're not getting 90% of an A7.. What are you high?

    • @TheTitan1530
      @TheTitan1530 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      If that's your opinion that's fine. But saying people get Acura because that's all they're able to afford is beyond stupid and extremely arrogant. Idk if you watched the entire video but that's how he summed it up. TL offers 90% of what an A7. Forget a TL, it's discontinued. I really don't know where you got this idea that Acura is a cheap brand, maybe it's because you had a 92 accord and once you got the Audi it was a big upgrade, but that mentality just doesn't hold. A RLX entry model costs more than a A6, and little less than A7 (10k) which really isn't much. A NSX costs the same as a R8, so again, I really don't know where you got this idea that Acura is a cheap brand. It's one thing to say that you prefer german engineering, but it's another to say that people who get any other car than german are lesser people who aren't able to afford luxuries in life.

    • @metalbrother2181
      @metalbrother2181 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What's in your opinion class car?
      To me, Acura is class car, no, not because it is more affordable, but because is stylish too. Everybody have own class, nothing wrong with that. All people like you, if it's german, you classy guy, what a BS.

    I used to sell Audis and always loved the A7. An amazing car. I am a current owner of a 2012 TL SH-AWD and am pretty impressed with the car. Great power and great handling. Much better than I expected and the AWD seems every bit as good as what I've driven in the Audis. I wonder where this test would have ended up if he had driven the TL with an Auto transmission?

    If you lease cars, get the Audi. If you buy cars and keep them for a long time, get the Acura. I've had Acuras with over 330K on them that still drive like almost new. The few German cars I've owned felt like they had 330K on them when they only had 50K miles. The German cars are not made to last. They are a blast to drive though!

    I just got an Acura TL on Thursday! I absolutely LOVE it!!! This car is phenomenal when takes off. It slams my back up against the seat. I don't like the body style of the Audis but the tech inside is pretty nice but so is the Acura and at a much better value. I will take the Acura over Audi any day due to style, reliability, and price. The 2012 Acura TL is a great car!!! :)

  • @TWHISPERER
    @TWHISPERER 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    So, the Audi has a Supercharged V6 and it's only slightly faster then the Acura is? HMMMM..

    • @EdGuila
      @EdGuila 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +John Vu The TL isn't supercharged but has almost an extra liter of engine displacement. 3.7 vs 3.0. Acura looks plan as hell too, you can't distinguish the side profile from a Toyota Camry. A7 looks sharp. Also SHAWD sucks, it's those electronic on-demand viscous coupling that relies on a computer to detect slip and babysit you. quattro is full time directly connected via torsen differential - no computer baby sitting you helping you steer your car gimmicks - just pure AWD.

    • @TWHISPERER
      @TWHISPERER 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      EdGuila Good points but who cares how the AWD works as long as they work! I do consider both of these cars to have the best AWD systems though.

    • @EdGuila
      @EdGuila 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I care about the type of AWD because it doesn't turn on and off when a computer thinks it needs to. It's always on. So due to the torsen system, the differential increases and decreases torque between axles as it's needed. It doesn't wait until after a computer detects a slip to shift torque - that's if a computer notices it's slipping.

    • @JAnx01
      @JAnx01 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Vu
      The torsen will handle sudden surface changes better. Imagine a plash of ice on a dry road.

    • @reycuerdos
      @reycuerdos 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      EdGuila , you obviously don't know what you are talking about. AWD on the TL is engaged AT ALL TIMES! Meaning torque is sent to all four wheels at all times, not just when slip is detected. Viscous coupling!? You mean Electromagnetic Clutch Packs!? Because they are not them same! Honda came up with a far more advanced AWD system than Audi when it came out, with true rear torque verctoring vs Audi's cheap and inneficient brake based setup.

    TL

  • @HalfBreedMix
    @HalfBreedMix 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    First off, the Acura/Honda 3.7L isn't ancient. Acura used the 3.2L for two whole generations of the TL, but the 3.7L just came on the scene with the new TL (from what I know at least). As far as "huge displacements (corrected)" go, 3.7 liters is hardly "huge"; it's only a fifth of a liter more than what is standard for a current V6. From what I gather, the extra 0.2 liters was to best Nissan's legendary VQ engine, but Nissan just up sized their motor to 3.7L to stay on top. VQ motor is king

  • @HalfBreedMix
    @HalfBreedMix 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You are aware of Acura's new 1-model-upsize trend, right? The TSX is the new TL, the TL is the new RL, and the RL is just a lamer version of the current TL. As for the nose; Acura wanted something that would instantly stand out. The 2012 TL's beak has been toned down from that of the '09

  • @drivingsports
    @drivingsports  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @suprakilzz26 The buzzkill is coming from the traction control system braking the slipping tires. It doesn't have much (if anything) to do with the all-wheel drive system. The Audi simply has a more aggressive TCS. --Ryan

    @Veyronp87 Most super cars have a driving experience that is unique and completely different than driving a "normal" car. The A7 doesn't have that experience. It's an expensive car with some nice features but there is nothing that makes the driving experience "special" versus the Acura.

    TL is an aspirated V6 vs Audi A7 tubrocharged V6. There is a big difference and that difference shows in the design and development of the power plant of the TL.
    TL is a very dynamic, driver oriented car with a mix of luxury and deliverable performance which an E class, 5 series and the A7/A6 cannot provide FOR the price tag each of these vehicles possess.
    From a competitors and the drivers point of view, ACURA really is a force to be reckoned with.

    1. The engine in A7 is not the same as S4 - A7 has 310bhp and S4 333bhp
    2. A7 is not a coupe - it is only coupe shape, but is a 4 err 5 door :-)

    I have a 2004 Acura TL Type S that I bought new. It's the best car I've ever had, and it's still fun to drive even after nearly 10 years. It's time to get a new car, but it looks like Acura will not be making TL anymore. Instead, they're going to redesign it and release it as the TLX sometime next year. The Audi S6 is closer to the TL in price and performance, so when the time comes, I will be comparing and choosing between those two cars.

    I had a 2004 350 z(Enthusiast) with just 108 thousand on the dashboard. Never give me any major trouble. Kept the oil change(synthetic blend) amd lil minor problems here and there like any ordinary car. But unfortunately it got totaled. But i had my eyes om a Acura Tl SH AWD. Bought a 2012. And never look bck. One of the best sport sedan cars Acura have made. Just a beautiful car and the performance is on point.

    Amen, I would never pay the premium that those badges bring when I can get cars like the acura/Honda which are just as good with lot more options and cost a whole lot less. Fact is that if you were to compare similarely priced cars like for example the acura vs any of the germans, the german would not even stand a small chance in that comparision because of the car/options the acura would offer compared to some base model, engineless, raw german counterpart!

    the difference is monumental you troll..by using your analogy, I can ask you what the difference is between an Audi and a Volkswagen....The Acura TL feels much more luxurious even against a fully loaded Accord EX.

    Horrible analogy. Just because you can't afford to eat at a lux restaurant doesn't mean you automatically enjoy Olive Garden. Taste (in food or cars) has nothing to do with financial status.

    Just bought a TL SH-AWD with tech....you can't beat the value in comparison to Lexus, Infiniti, Audi, BMW, or Mercedes. This comparison was an attempt to compare the transmissions and drive systems....makes sense that the Audi would perform better given the price tag. At the end of the day is 25K worth a second a half? No thank you sir.

    The Acura TL 41k vs. The Audi A7 75K
    I would much rather see a comparison between vehicles that are in the same price range. When you have a 34k difference in price your are suppose to win.

    (part 5)
    Performance?? Very little advantage on the TL (C&D test for both cars), and basically identical up to 130 mph.....identical braking numbers, the TL has better grip with the optional 19" performance tires....let's clarify that in the test on the video, the TL had the standard 18" all season rubber while the A7 I believe has the optional high performance tires..so that may explain the small "loss" on that track...

    I have a 2012 Acura TL front drive and have buyers regret - minor regret. Should have gotten the SH AWD version since the front drive model under steers heavily. As a whole, I think I should have skipped Acura altogether. It's now 4 years old with 70,000 miles and hasn't aged well like my 2005 Mercedes E320 with 194,000 miles. My Mercedes is 11 years old or 7 years older than my Acura yet the Acura interior has a worn older look and feel. Reliability, my Mercedes has only had regular oil, brakes, tires and fluid - no timing belt since it uses a steel chain for the cams. My Acura however has had the passenger rear hub bearing replaced twice. Timing belt was changed at 50K at a tune of $650. Transmission was feeling slouchy so had the fluids changed twice. Windshield has had multiple chips and cracks that were fixed. Front lights have been changed at 49k miles. Bluetooth no longer works and audio system has distortion playing med loud volumes. The Mercedes body stiffness still feels solid and the ride is compliant and squeaky free. The Acura has softened up and doesn't feel solid like when I first got it. Also it makes small rattle and squeak sounds that come and go. I like the Acura and I think it has been a good reliable car but it's nowhere close to the refinement, quality, style, and specialness of my Mercedes. My kids, wife, boss, and friends enjoy being in my Mercedes significantly more than my Acura even though the Acura is much newer and it's current value is twice as much as the Mercedes. I intend to keep my Mercedes and give it to my daughters in two as their first vehicles. The Acura I will eventually sell or trade in for another Mercedes or BMW. This is not about bashing Acura, just coming from owning it and having the ability to A/B drive it against my Mercedes for 4 years...

    hands down...not bad at all that the TL was only 1.5 seconds shorter than the A7...Being that the TL is heavier and is naturally aspirated it isn't a bad loss. Anyway, I feel that he drive the A7 a littler harder and have it more gas.

    To all of the delightful people out there who have asked why I want a TL or TLX over a FWD V6 Accord, a “basic” $45,000 Acura almost tied with a $70,000 Audi in a handling course AND the Acura was a manual. How much more proof could you possibly need?????

    i have an 2005 acura tl, it beats my dads 2003 a6 3.0 quattro in driving dynamics, personality, and speed. Its a teenager begging me to go faster while the a6 kinda feels like an old man nagging me to slow down. if u want a good family orientated sports car on a budget, look at a tl or nissan maxima. theyre both hella fun to drive, both are quite comfortable. and have many nice features too. and theyre are much more reliable than european cars. and as this vid shows, they can keep up with them 2

    The TSX is NOT the new TL. The TL is the TL. The RL's were a tech. marvel, a "latest technology& features" BEST car of Acura. RL is "Redefined Luxury". TL is "Touring Luxury". The TSX and ILX are "civics" of Acura. To get back on topic, I drove both TL & A7, liked the TL more AND it came with a MT! I got the 2012 3.7L 305HP 6MT SH-AWD. AWESOME CAR. Glad I got it over the Audi. Audi's are nice, but VERY expensive to repair, and you WILL have to, and it WILL COST! Same with BMW. I've had two!

    You can't compare those 2, they are not in the same price range, not the same layout and the Audi had the optional 20'' wheels, the Acura had the base 18'', not his optional 19''.
    It was interesting to see anyway, but the result means nothing.

    BMW M3, M5, M6, B7? Audi S4, RS4, S5, RS5, R8, R8 GT? Mercedes SL, SLK, McLaren SLR? I'm sorry, but not only are German cars, but they are among the best sport cars in the world. R8 GT, that much luxury and still have a super car? SLR, capable of attaining nearly 210 MPH? M5, one of the fastest and best handling sedans you can get, if not THE best?
    Yea... In the 80s/90s and still today. Infiniti, Acura and Lexus are mere leeches.

    I have defended Acura on every post for 3 years. My new car is an Audi.. My new 4 cylinder not only wins on gas mileage, but blows the door off on style. My fear for Acura is the upcoming Audi A3/ S3, along with the redesigned Audi A4 and S4. All of a sudden, my TL seems dated. Yes the Acura is dependable, but most purist who love style and technology will seek "more" over the next 3 years. Acura, please wake up. Torque is more important than horsepower. I gave the TL to my wife.

    They may be overpriced to you, but I completely disagree. The finishing of German cars is superior, they use more premium materials, have a better residual value and in general the cars are more durable. I am willing to pay for that.
    Audi uses a lot of aluminium and carbon to reduce weight and optimize balance. Those are things you don't see from the outside.
    For the electrical argument: although the parts are being produced under Japanese supervision, they are engineered by the Germans.

  • @mikerules666

    One question. How do they choose which 2 cars to compete? It seems to me that the A6 would have been a better match for the TL. But, then again, I don't test cars everyday.

  • @MrVuTran

    LOL I agree with you. Some of these hardcore fans need to go out and test both cars for themselves.
    Some are funny with saying "n/a V6 vs sc V6, and so on" . Do they even know one is 3.7L and the other is 3.0L? The tested car is an MT, which is around 3900lbs gives or takes, where as the low end A7 is around 4200lbs (I am being generous).
    BTW, I own 3 cars (3G TL, G35 coupe, 07 A6) and almost pulled the trigger on the Prestige A7 after tested these cars again. Went with a nicer house instead.

    the point of all wheel drive is not to slide the back end out. the acura is rear-outside wheel bias through turns, in other words a fake torque vectoring. you're doing it wrong if quattro "failed." audi has been making all wheel drive cars for over 30 years. and the dsg transmission will shift smoother and faster than any human. vorsprung durch technik, through and through.
