Thanks so much !!! I’ve never heard of her before though I recognized the sweater she had on. I think the bindweed sweater is amazing but I’m not sure I would make it because I struggle so with it in my garden. I call it nobody loves you weed….
from someone whose only child is now 25, please, cherish the time you have with your children, it is gone all too fast. I remember wishing the toddler years would get over with, because I was just so frustrated about having no "me time", between work, school, and a toddler, but now I would give anything for more time with my son. He lives (and is thriving) more than a few hours away, so I only get to see him a couple times a year, for a few hours to maybe a day. Find a half hour a day, either before the kids wake, or after they go to bed, to do something just for you, and enjoy these fleeting years while they are small. I'm not judging, everyone has to find their own balance, just reminding you all that these years will be gone before you know what has happened.
I was wondering whether I was the only person watching this interview who felt intensely uncomfortable about Marina’s seemingly chilly attitude towards her “boy” and time needed for motherhood. Maybe it’s a cultural difference in language and tone that I’m not translating correctly, but I WOULD say “the dog”, “the cat” etc, but never “the boy”…always “my son”, or “my little boy”. If my husband ever refers to me as “the” wife, he hears about it from me!

"You talk about doing things that connect you to what it means to be a human, like growing the potatoes, weaving, knitting... the stuff that's not necessary but is necessary for you to thrive. How do you make time for that?" IMHO, raising small children, above anything else, connects you to what it means to be human. You can grow potatoes until you're 100, but you only have a few precious years at home with your kids before they're off to school, activities, and then grown and out of the house. I can buy potatoes, but I can't buy more time with my children.💕

A great podcast. Totally sympathise with both of you ttrying to combine work with childcare etc. Only I am at the other end of the scale. Still part time working, spinning, weaving, crochet and running a knit group whilst caring for elderly relatives. But the ideas that you and Marina have given me for creating a bit of organisation and space have been really helpful. Thankyou.
Marina Skua is such an interesting creater. I think fibre sheds are an amazing idea. In Canada there has been a strong movement for fibre sheds, and I used to be so envious of all the British Yarns but I have to say, Canada has quite a fantastic little collection too. I hope more people take an interest in Fibre Sheds. thanks for these lovely vlogs Emma, they are interesting and fun and have so much in them.

How fun to listen to you two chat! My childrearing years are over and I've retired from my work, but it hasnt been so long ago that I struggled daily to make it all work (and I homeschooled as well). My creative work somehow still did happen (but i still don't know how), i did manage to garden and can our food and make our bread, and I still ran my business, but it was all an ebb and flow. And i was exhausted all the time. The toddler years are the most difficult, for sure. Somehow it happens, though, and the children grow, and some days are just fabulous. Others are utter failures. I think as long as you know that both are possible, its a LOT easier.
This was so wonderful to listen to. I am a knitter, spinner and crafter. I have chosen to stay at home with my daughter and homeschool her until she enters kindergarten at 5 years old. It is nice to hear other makers and how they try to balance mom life, home-wife housekeeping things and their own passions. It is so important not to loose ourselves and what is important to us. Oh wow I have made hand made pasta with my Mom once, it's so much work but she's Italian and wanted me to be involved in the process since she learned from my Grandma ❤.
