- Aloha everyone! In this video I share 6 fruit plants we grow that have produced a good amount of fruit in a very small amount of time! I believe it is important to grow plant that produce fruit quickly to give you a sense of reward and accomplishment, this will also keep you motivated to keep planting and create the most optimal environment for your plants to thrive! I'm in upper HA. I took the advice of the dozer operator who cleared my lot and put bananas on top of the push pile. Ten months later I was harvesting huge racks of bananas.
Other plants that I found to fruit in the first year or two; acerola cherry, Brazilian cherry and mulberry. The crop was small the first year but has been increasing each time. The mulberry has been fruiting continuously since the first fruiting.

My favourite fruit you are growing is guava. I made some guava jam once from wild guavas I picked along a trail in Hawaii and is was sooo good. Also I love papaya, lilikoi, pineapple and starfruit. I'd be happy waking up to these fruits for brekkie every day.

Great video! Surinam Cherries also fruit very quickly. I have 1yr old keiki in pots fruiting. Low maintenance very easy to propogate and fruit multiple times a year!

Doing a great job there brother. Amazing the fruits there when you live in the UK. It looks very humid there. That must be tough going. But imagine cold rain blasting your face on the hills in Wales and Ireland. Dark at 4:30pm in the Winter. That's tough going.
Yummy....mulberry...I love chomping on them when I bike....been really too hot here in east pgh. past couple days...wish it was a bit cooler with a few sprinkles...you two do the best vids...soursop wall coming along nicely...wow...mangosteins take forever to fruit. Rest up✈️

You need to cut the banana blossoms off when the fruits had set..it would allow the banana fruits to grow bigger or larger, otherwise the nutrients will go into the blossoms. And you can cook the banana blossoms into yummy salad with coconut 🥥 milk, soup, meat balls style, etc. So many recipes you can make with banana blossoms.
I have heard of this before but I’m not sure how true it is. I’ve talked to lots of people about it and some say cut it some say leave it. I like to leave it because it helps to let me know when it’s almost time to harvest. I have also cut them too. I just don’t think the plant is wasting any energy on the flower because it is in a state of dying as soon as it comes out. The flower is getting smaller not bigger, but who knows.

Yeah that’s probably where I heard of cutting them off. I should do more experimenting to find out how much of a difference it makes.
I have heard this too. I think in the large banana farms they do this so that they can put the bag over them. In a small hobby farm like yours, or ours, I don't think it makes a difference. We have done it both ways and it doesn't seem to matter. I kind of like to have the flower on the plant. It just looks prettier to me.

I definitely need some mulch for my trees - at our house in Waipahu I have 4 or 5 papaya trees now, one apple banana & one Fijian coconut. It’s usually really dry on our side of the island, and not much shade 😕

good video educational and in depth as to what grows the fastest and the abundance at Harvest, and to go with the abundance of harvest is one of the reasons why I'm going to invest in a freeze dryer instead of a dehydrator, what steps do you take in preserving your Harvest just curious buddy, maybe a topic there somewhere for the next video, great touch at the last two seconds Michael , Jill played it twice and put her ear up to the screen and love the part where you told her she looked beautiful and you were going to kiss her and Jill says look look Paulina cracked a slight smile, great touch she loves your interaction with each other. We haven’t actually preserved anything yet. We just eat it all and share if we have a lot.
Fruits to add in for fast fruiting (2-3 years from seed)….Abiu, rollinia, jackfruit, soursop, ice cream bean, peanut butter fruit, mountain apple, Many grafted trees ...
I have had a thin skin popoulu fruit in 6 months from planting a 3ft keiki. I would say more like 9 months to a year for well fertilized bananas. also 9 months ive heard for papayas but a year is better to plan for...
what is your elevation? if it is a tad bit higher...a year and a half might be right on. they definitely grow slower when average temp drops.
I've got 2 peach trees, 1 lemon tree, and an apricot tree in the back yard. The peach trees aren't that big but produce a lot of fruit. The other trees aren't doing as well and might not produce fruit due to improper care by the former home owner and a bit of neglect from myself. From the videos I've seen, apricot trees aren't that easy to take care of. All of the trees had several other plants growing around the base, which I removed, but the peach trees didn't seem mind. The former owner said that he used a lot of fertilizer and I haven't used any just some mulch where there used to be plants.

The nice thing about guava is that it's fairly high in protein considering it's a fruit. As an example: 95 calories of apple is 0.5g protein, and 112 calories of guava is 4.2g of protein. Fruit tends to be low in protein.
Is it only me? With the onset of Corona I have tons of veggies and a few carbs growing in my backyard. Even have eggs but no fruits!
A few fruits r available on the market but with price gorging...I can't source it like before. I feel like I'm starving.

You’re on big island right? Can you discuss the climate that these need? I live on west side of Oahu and it’s hot and dry here will any of the trees do ok in that climate?

nagwagi2000 I was so close to adding Rollinia to this list! We have about about 20 in the ground that we’re started from seed. They are about 8ft tall and have tons of flowers but no fruits yet. I have heard 3-5 years on them so not much longer! Mahalo for the comment.

The fastest fruit that I grow is Pepino . I can go from a cutting to eating it's fruits in just a few months.
How do coconuts do in your area?
Do air layered cuttings from mature tress and get fruit early. 🤔

I usually add a little mulch on the top to hold in moisture. You can use anything for mulch, just go in the woods and take what ever the top layer is. Usually half broken down leaves. I do add diluted urine if they start to look like they need it but you can add it once a month if you want them to grow faster. Dilute 10 to 1

tropical fruit trees im in a cool temperate climate collecting fruit trees and i have to use sand and treat tropicals like cactus in winter because of the climate and the greenhouse which is more of a rain house lol

...not the same banana (as you know it)...the one You cut grows(develope)like that...the 'hand' opens as the fruit 'swells' in growth

I have several varieties and all have fruited in less than a year from seed in H.A. They are heavy feeders though so fertilize well.
Do you grow mango?
Mangos have no problem growing in our climate, but it rains so much that they have a hard time producing fruit. Most of the mangos on big island come from Kona where it is much drier. Keitt, Rapoza, and Brooks Late are some of the varieties people have had some luck with on our side, but they may only produce once every 3-5 years. we still decided to get one Keitt mango tree because we love mangos.
@@OffGridHawaii I've seen mangos do good in the rainy parts on kauai, I've been told the trick to getting them to fruit is to stress them a little. keep them trim and drive a few nails in them and they'll throw fruit. That said, the dry side is know for having the most plentiful mangos, so I don't doubt they do prefer it a little dryer.
my mango is about 7 years old and it fruits here and there, but it's never had a good pruning, which it's going to get this feb cause I don't want it getting any bigger than it is now (~20 ft)

That’s actually a variety I don’t like very much so we didn’t plant any. I’m not really a fan of any of the AAA varieties, to sweet. Do you have anything else?
