Ok but I genuinely love that the imaginary friend "grows up" with a sim and if that sim is dedicated enough they can turn the imaginary friend real and marry them. I think that's really cute, because that takes a lot of commitment.
yeah LMAO usually my imaginary friends end up becoming the human Sims highschool sweetheart or something because of how strong their bond was as kids. (and because hey I like how my imaginary Sims look.)
In real life people go from friends in preschool and wind up getting into loving adult relationships so, for me, the imaginary friend turning into a lover later in life isn't creepy. From a certain angle though I can see where it might creep some people out, because the imaginary friend can be viewed more as a sibling than something separate from blood relationships. Isn't it weird how fluid connections between people can be between different folks?

So you’re now marrying your “child”. There’s also the idea that it’s a fake person so besides the creepy implications of “fake humans”, you have fallen in love with a person who isn’t real and indulging in fantasy to the point to the point of delusion. Like engaging with a hallucination. Kind of like when that Japanese man married his virtual DS girlfriend. I don’t necessarily find it creepy but I can see why others can’t stomach it

The craziest thing that's ever happened to me in the Sims 3 was I got that super rare event where in University if you let the science students dabble around long with the Group Science Experiment Object, they can accidentally cause an orbital strike on your neighborhood. My sim was just peacefully going about her day, ya' know just tryin' to earn her college degree when suddenly I got a popup notification in the upper right "Something is uncharacteristically dimming the sun, what could it be?". Next thing I look at my Sims moodlets and one is marked "orbital strike imminent", I was like OH SHIT! I'd heard about this happening before in Sims 2 but never saw it. Suffice it to say I told my Sim to leave class early and run randomly around the foothills on the edge of town. Figured if I didn't just stay in one spot the likelihood of her getting killed would be less. The asteroid came down, right in the middle of the campus, exploding over the science division. It started a bunch of fires all over randomly, space rocks were strewn all about everywhere as well as several of those really big asteroid pieces you can sometimes find in the world while watching via telescope. Everyone ran out of class and half the townies died instantly of a heart attack while charred. The other half farther away from the epicenter burned to death in like 30 sims minutes lol. Only silver lining at the end of all of it, was that many space rocks were worth alot of simoleons lol.

There was a time when my vampire Sim almost died from being outside for too long. When the Grim Reaper came to turn her into a ghost, my dogs (that my sims had since they were born) attacked the Grim Reaper, causing him to let my Sim live. I couldn’t believe what I was watching lmao
RIGHT? i saw bits and pieces about the sims 3 and when i played the sims 4 i thought the gameplay was pretty boring so i mostly stuck to cas or building. when i finally bought the sims 3, one of the first things my sim did was go into a randos house and immediately start a fist fight with them. i was _floored._ i did NOT tell her to go in there, i did NOT tell her to get into a fight with the dude, IN HIS OWN HOUSE, i was completely flabbergasted. immediately started playing more sims 3 and abandoned sims 4. honestly, i hope the sims 5 has the graphics of the sims 4 but the game mechanics of the sims 3. it's so much cooler to just let your sim do whatever they want and see what weird shit they do

The normal gnomes can also start their own families if you have more than one. They also age from baby to elder and then die, leaving a little gold gnome statue on your sims lot. ETA: Vampire gnomes can also bite any teddy bears on your sims lot and turn them into vampire gnomes as well.
The creator of the infamous haunted doll was actually a well known custom content creator named Rebecah. It's thought that the corruption was a result of some of the early modding tools for the Sims 3 being pretty scuffed, combined with the game's absolute mess of spaghetti code. There were other pieces of custom content that caused a similar issue on a smaller scale, at least from what I've heard. Rebecah is actually still active in the community to this day, and posts custom content on Affinity Sims. She's also a 70 year old great-grandmother who started making custom content when she was around 55, which is pretty badass if I do say so myself!

Also shows their picture as an old woman and the birthdate listed is in 1952. Either it's a very devoted character or an actual old woman. Either way, their content sound like it's genuinely liked.

How is everyone getting nice imaginary friends? Mine were always bullies that would constantly violate the privacy of my child sim. They were never able to use the bathroom or shower CAUSE THAT FRICKER WOULD TELEPORT THROUGH LOCKED BATHROOM DOORS TO BULLY THEM.
Fun fact: Tiberium is actually the main currency in Command and Conquer, EA's RTS game series. It spreads across the ground like a fungus and consumes nutrients from anything it contacts, including humans and animals. Hence, if your sim holds onto some for a long period of time, they get sick.

This is what I did with my very first imaginary friend when I first downloaded the pack. I had this whole plotline that the girl and her imaginary friend were in love since childhood and so her inventing potions since she was small was her desperate attempt to be with him while keeping it away from her dad since he couldn't see her friend and would think she was crazy if she told him. I even set this deadline that I had to make the potion to turn him human before they turned into adults or he'd be stuck as a doll forever (I'm pretty sure that's not actually a thing in the game). Then when he turned human I made him a chef because I loved the idea that he had never been able to eat food before and as soon as he was able to taste it he was in love with cooking.
One time I used cheats and did the "edit sim in create a sim" action on a raccoon because I was curious as to what would happen. To my surprise it was sent to the room where you would edit human sims, not the barn where animal sims are usually edited. This also meant that the game tried to treat it like a human and stretched it out like crazy similar to the toddler glitch. The raccoon was absolutely fucked once I left the editor as well. I was genuinely so creeped out. I do kinda love the fact that we all encountered these sinister glitches at one point or another. It adds a whole new layer of community when you realize that there are tons of people out there that share these obscure and traumatizing moments from your childhood all connected to the same game that brought you hundreds of hours of fun.
i tried changing a fowl's coat with cheats once and it made the, now adult sized horse, stretch inwards to fit with the small animations. i decided to put it out of its misery and shift click > deleted it

I always thought the imaginary friends were cute, an ideal cute childhood romance. When I was a kid, I'd always try to make them real by making potions for them. Once both are teens, they have a cute romance and go to prom together before eventually wedding as adults.
The creepiest thing that I remember from the game was how zombies would randomly pop up in my sim's yard and would stare at them through the windows if they weren't covered. It use to really freak me out.
I remember turning off the lunar cycle because I was super freaked out by them as well. I missed out on a majority of the content in Supernatural that way lmao

The best sims save stories always come from the perfect mix of game mechanics, AI and glitches. I had a single mum sim who would somehow glitch out around bars and get stuck on a loop making and drinking nectar while leaving her toddler on the floor. I almost got teary seeing the daughter later grow up and take on the parental role for her siblings, finally raising enough money for the household to celebrate Christmas together.

I played her once ! She had a ghost baby with her former husband, then turned the child into a proper human, thanks to the help of her wife (Kate Pistachio). It demanded a lot of commitment to them, but they succeeded. Then they move together to Isla Paradiso, raised their son and a dog. When Raphaël (the son) became an adult, he moved to Apaloosa Plain to raise horses. Agnes and Kate stayed in Isla Paradiso, bought a house-boat and lived a peaceful life.
Since we're on the topic of Lolita Goth, I'd also like to add another, lesser known member: Rebecca Goth! I used to play the Sims 3 Console and wondered who Rebecca exactly was. Apparently, she's _likely_ the great granddaughter of Timaeus Goth aka the founder of Sugar Maple Coast, which is the neighbourhood you're in in the game. Since she's a young adult in the game and Sunset Valley's Bella's a kid, I've always thought of Rebecca as like, the 'black sheep' aunt, considering how she (and Timeaus, who's then a ghost) is the only Goth in SMC.

There's really no way to tell if Rebecca is older or younger than Bella though. There's not enough evidence to prove when the timeline of Sugar Maple Coast takes place. The game lacked descriptions that would suggest the timeline and no familiar faces are seen. The same can't be said for Sims 3 for consoles though. Malcolm Landgrabb of Sunset Valley appears in Moonlight Bay, having the same traits as he did in the PC version and his bio saying that he moved out of Sunset Valley. So Moonlight Bay would've been taken place around the same time as Sims 2 as the Sims in that game are adults or turning into elders very soon, which Malcolm will very soon become an elder when you first play the game. That's just my observations though, I'd love to hear what others think.
I'm not from a country where homosexual relationships were openly talked about during my childhood (or ever talked about at all), but Sims 3 became a discovery for me in this regard when my girl sim showed sympathy for another girl. I was so gentle with these relationships, and saw so many opportunities for them to exist in the world. I will never forget how I thought, looking at two girls kissing: I like it, it's beautiful. And then I created myself :D

I remember when my sims 3 file ended up glitching out while playing with island paradise; I had a wedding for two of my sims and, when it was over, everyone had left aside from one sim. He was stuck clapping and cheering for the newly weds until his unfortunate demise. I didn't know the cheats to reset him, as I had no internet back then to look it up, so I had to watch as this man cheered and cheered until Grim came to take him away. His wife and daughter even came over to visit him, too, any interactions they had with him couldn't get him unstuck, despite going through. It was heartbreaking and terrifying
I bought my sims game second hand and one lot had two people just frozen in their house but apparently the lot was always for sale because if you moved a family in then they too became frozen. There are probably soo many sims still stuck on that lot 😂
A glitch I remember finding but never saw anyone else talk about was accidentally creating hobbits. I had two child sims celebrate their birthday one morning but they didn't age up before getting on the school bus. Then halfway on the journey to school they get kicked off the school bus, have their age up animation but stayed the same height of a child despite being teenagers
I had this glitch too when my kid sims were out past curfew and were caught by the police on their birthday, they never stopped being a kids height. Really corrupted that save file haha

I love how the Sims 3 is known for being horribly buggy and unplayable at times, but I am 20 and have been playing it since it came out on various devices (including my own laptop) with like 10 expansion packs on and have NEVER had an issue with bugs or broken game issues.

this almost made me cry... i got the sims 3 as a birthday gift from my mom in 5th grade and became absolutely addicted to it, especially since i barely had any friends, i could spend hours on it. u could even track my interests over time as i went from making generic characters, over characters from my favorite anime and manga, to ocs... :,). it even helped me discover my identity, i still remember the first time i made a sim have a gay relationship, it felt so SCANDALOUS to me xD. it even got me through the death of my grandpa, who was my father figure and whose dementia had gotten deblitating over the summer holidays between 4th and 5th grade. i also bonded with one of the sweetest and funniest girls i ever met over the game, we would spend hours after school sitting in front of my shitty old laptop, making sims while eating candy from the gas station that was near my house (sadly she changed schools shortly after, jula if ur out there... hi :)) ok that was a lot of personal stuff sorry the sims 3 was THE comfort game of my childhood next to minecraft pocket edition, pokemon, animal crossing and tomodachi life (i also have an unhealthy attachment to tomodachi life and even hearing the music makes me cry, i would never dare delete my save file bc it still has the mii my grandpa made of himself on it)

the Imaginary Friend feature ironically reminds me of a fanfiction i used to read some time ago about the main character having a secret unseen power to bring their imaginary friends into existence, albeit very gradually and over many years. the story kinda time skips throughout the boys' childhoods and as the imaginary friend grows older he becomes more corporeal. the fanfic actually does delve into that existential horror element of someone existing as an extension of someone else's imagination and struggling to figure out if he actually EXISTS in the same capacity as the person who created him. i think about that fic from time to time and even tho it was never finished it was such a field trip.....
I honestly wish she had talked about ghost babies, I remember discovering them for the first time and being surprised and creeped out. Especially with ghost toddlers that would morph weirdly when doing stuff like walking lol
@@Arthaius Well they can't to my knowledge. You get ghost babies by woohooing with a ghost, the baby will have the same cause of death as the parent. Idk if they were an accident (haha) or there's something in the code to make it happen. I recommend looking up more about ghost babies, they're kinda fun
@@Arthaius actually kids can die in the sims 3 If a meteor strikes at a school for instance (from the natural disasters expansion) everyone inside will die including the kids Most often they are taken away by social services but they can still die in the sims 3
@@Arthaius babies and toddlers can become victims of default story progression if you don't manage that family with babies and toddlers, their graves can sometimes be taken from the mausoleum, just like other dead npc's. In addition to a meteorite, elementary school children can burn in a fire or randomly catch fire while working with an inventor's workbench or even get burned during the summer season after a long stay in the sun, I saw a child from the house next door get burned to death. And children can drown in the pool, in one save i had a glitch with sims freedom of will and they couldn't get out of the pool in the community lot without my command and one kid drowned. I left game without saving cuz child was my favourite

I know izzy thought the imaginary doll turning into a person and being able to fall in love with and woohoo with anyone they want, including the person they were given to, but that has like the complete opposite effect on me now that i've learned of its existence. I remember one time in twinbrook..I was trying to level my sims guitar level and half the town was watching her and out of the blue I noted a few sims acting weird and I heard a strange sound ..and before you know it a meteor came down and wiped out all but 3 sims. I was so flabbergasted.
The imaginary friend terrified me as a kid. I remember thinking it was cute and then one day it did or said something so creepy and from then on I never wanted it, if I ever saw it I wanted to kill it with fire. I can’t find what it said but people have talked about how they can become controlling and jealous and mean to your sim and I feel like it must have been something like that.
Mean, yes. Almost every time I had seen my child and their imaginary friend interacting, they were having a fight, seemingly always on the IM's part. It happened so often that their relationship was always in the halves despite all the effort I went through maxing out their friendship. After a certain point, I had my child Sim just tell their IM to step off and never deal with them again.
I thought it was a cute addition when I first got the expansions and played with a huge family. It was the first kid in the household, so I had them grow up with their imaginary friend and got them to max the chemistry lab table object until they could make the potion that makes the imaginary friend real. I used it, came up with a narrative, and had them live "happily ever after". However, every single child after that also received an imaginary friend that I could not sell or delete, that would constantly prompt me to "let them out so they can spend more time with [child's name]" even after that sim had aged up to adulthood. Imaginary friends are now annoying to say the least, and creepy at most. They are unavoidable, never leave, and will constantly be in my sim's inventories for fear of placing them down and them springing to life to unceasingly pester and argue with my sims and keep them from completing tasks and complaining when they don't give them attention. In other words, the imaginary friend system became more of a "clingy nice guy" simulator that you can't avoid.
i absolutely hate in sims 3 that you cannot get off the dating site and everyone stalks you. it's so scary. even married sims. you cannot delete your profile.
The celebrity lore in the late night expansion is absolutely unhinged. The highlights are the Littler and Belle families. There's also the vampire clan stuff which is equally as crazy.
My first and most memorable childhood Sims 3 horror experience was extremely basic, perhaps even iconic. I was 9, playing the game for the first time all by myself. It was my first ever family, no cheats, small budget, I was just learning the game and trying my best to upkeep my sims, get them a job, start a family, expand the house, etc. The sims were married, had their first toddler just recently and the wife was already pregnant with another one. My house was ugly, taking care of the baby and meeting sims needs was stressful, but otherwise it was going pretty well. But then that fateful night came... wife got hungry in the middle of the night, husband got up to make some mac & cheese..... and then, of course, the cheap ass stove caught on fire along with the man. I didn't have a smoke detector because I intentionally sold it earlier to get enough money for a better TV or something (I think I didn't even know wtf a smoke detector was at the time). No help was coming, so the wife ran to the kitchen in panic and tried to put out the fire all by herself. Everyone's screaming, the baby in the back is crying too, it was a very tense moment that felt like an eternity. She kept spraying and spraying while he kept screeching in agony.... he didn't make it. His charred lifeless body fell to the floor and then... *that* track started playing. The shadowy skeletal figure appeared, took the husbands body and disappeared, leaving the weeping pregnant wife all alone in their soot covered kitchen. That imagery *traumatized* me. Definitely dropped the game for month because I was just too damn scared to return. Also the Grim Reaper's design definitely exacerbated my fear of the dark, I couldn't sleep without my nightlight for years after that because I had that weird ass fear that the reaper will come for me too.
I had a similar experience when I first discovered sims could die, but it was in the sims 2, I didn't know I needed to buy a fridge for them to eat so the mother of the family collapsed of starvation and 11 year old me suddenly sees the grim reaper appearing, I freaked the f outttt
I don't see it brought up too often, but, Tiberium being canon to Sims 3 implies it's in the same universe as the Command and Conquer games, and the Military career events imply the events of C&C are in fact happening at the same time your Sim is just chilling.
I have had so many horrifying glitches in the sims 3. Some, admittedly, are due to a huge amount of mods, but I had what I refer to as "ghost daughter" in a mostly regular save. I only had master controller that I didn't use, and extra clothing. I adopted a baby, and even though I had needs turned off, my sim was always getting a negative moodlet for hearing crying. I checked his relationships and I had a second daughter that just NEVER spawned. She had the same name as my kid, but a totally randomized appearance. I ended up cheating her into my household since she didn't exist anywhere in the town. She was mostly normal for a bit, but she ended up not being able to attend school, get a job, or have a birthday without cheats. I ended up deleting the save because I felt bad for her and was sad about it all the time.
My favorite thing to do with the World Adventures pack was to have a female Sim get pregnant from a random guy from each destination. Then, have the different dads come to visit at different times and never have them find out about each other.
As someone who has OCs, one of my fave things was to imagine the imaginary friends were OCs of the character come to life and it was my fave story to play with
I remember one time I was playing Sims 3 with TONS of downloadable content, making my game super buggy. My sims were in France in that huge creepy mansion, and they all went to sleep. Young me checked on them while super zoomed in on their faces for whatever reason, and one of my sims was just laying there in her bed, eyes wide open yet just white part showing. Never noped out of the game so fast before. It's been probably more than 10 years by now and I occasionally think about it
So glad we get a sims 3 video. This game and Sims2 literally defined my childhood/teen years. Shout out to all the kids who got CC from the exchanged and ended up destroying their games with bad CC like The Boots (if you know you know) and the centaur bottom.
The little city seen from Twinbrook in the far distance is supposed to be Bridgeport. It's very bright and has little skyscrapers. You can also see a miniature Twinbrook from Bridgeport :)
I think something cool to point out is that Tiberium, the mineral that gives you Visceroidal Nausea is a reference to another EA published game series, Command and Conquer, an RTS where Tiberium is one of the resources you harvest to produce things.
Not to be "that guy", but the whole "owning land in Scotland and be a Lord/Lady" through Established Titles is dodgy. Obviously it goes without saying that you don't own the land, you're effectively sponsoring it (like you don't own the dolphin or donkey you sponsor through charities), and you can't style yourself as a Lord or Lady officially, because you're not one. They don't make that clear. It's kinda like how companies tell you you can "name a star". You can't. You're paying for a piece of paper that tells you you have, but it'll never be officially recognised. Lots of people have styled it as a scam, because you don't own anything, you're not suddenly made a Lord, and the company isn't really doing anything with the money they're making. YES! I used to play those games back when I was a kid. They were basically used as a fuel and were the only resource in a lot of those games (most games have 3 or 4). Tiberium would slowly kill a lot of your soldiers if you walked too close, and would sometimes mutate them into horrible monstrosities. I really miss those games

Those games take place in the future, where the alien mineral Tiberium has mutated most of Earth's wildlife, absolutely destroyed the environment, and made many places completely uninhabitable by humans. So not only is radiation poisoning canon to the Sims universe, but it's also a prequel to Command and Conquer; a carefree suburban life simulator taking place mere decades before complete societal collapse. Your Sims are throwing parties, falling in love, and catching butterflies blissfully unaware that civilization as they know it is going to come to a very unpleasant end in their lifetimes.

Could the weirdly resurrected Twinbrook Sims be a reference to The Shadow over Innsmouth by HP Lovercraft? People with strangely colored skin, "bulgy" eyes, greying/possibly thinning hair, a transformation (of sorts), a heavily aquatic setting; The fact that the town is mostly blocked off, as the people of Innsmouth see outsiders as free game for sacrifices; an offputting atmosphere (green haze vs strong rotting fish smell); their bare feet could be a reference to the weird gait of Innsmouth locals. I'm definitely not the first person to have this theory but it really jumped out at me as I watched.

I remember when I'd play The Sims 3 there would be this field trip to the Sunset Valley laboratory, where every time I let my sim go on it, they would get stuck in a bush outside of the lab. The only way to get them out was by using commands. The glitch happened pretty much every single time the field trip happened, so it seemed to me like something somebody should have caught.

honestly the most terrifying glitch i encountered over and over again were when babies glitched and stretched out like little slenderman demons and performed adult animations instead of their baby animations. Still haunts me to this day
I'm so fascinated by secrets and creepy lore in games, especially innocent looking ones like the Sims. The Sims 3 has the best spooky factor in my opinion. It's a shame how far the series has fallen in terms of lore and cool/scary features. I really wish the Sims 4 had been made with care instead of seemingly being thrown together so they can drain players' bank accounts with DLCs just to make it playable. But I'm still looking forward to a Sims 4 deep dive if you decide to make it, there are definite positives to it as well! Loving this series

Ah, Sims 3. Always holds a special place in my heart for how many hours I sunk into that growing up. Personally, something I've found a bit creepy that you briefly mentioned is the cursed mummy sarcophagus. Just the fact that your Sim steps in there perfectly fine and then exits like... that... really makes you wonder exactly what is happening, doubly so considering unless you're currently afflicted with the Mummy's Curse, it takes multiple naps in there until your Sim is fully transformed.
Surprised you didn't mention that Twinbrooks is an obvious nod to Innsmouth, from the Lovecraft story "The Shadow over Innsmouth". Basically everything about it and the people who live there line up super well.

Just remembered one of the creepiest Sims 3 glitches I’ve had, one of my towns kept spawning proprietor sims on one of the restaurant lots. Every day more proprietors would spawn, different in names and appearances but all wearing matching suit outfits. They would stand on that lot at all hours of the day, a huge crowd of them facing different directions but silently watching and clapping at a nonexistent performance. There ended up being around 30 of them before it crashed my save.

okok SO THIS IS GONNA BE LONG but please bear with me as I explain. It is in reference to Lolita Goth. To add to the Lolita Goth theory: As an art person who's learned a lot about symbolism and motifs in media as part of my studies, I always thought Lolita Goth held heavy resemblance to the painting Girl With a Pearl Earring. Her hair pulled back behind her head with the band, the earrings, her soft complexion, and the girl's eyes in the painting are even SILVER, like Lolita's! Beyond that, the painting is said to resemble, in a lot of ways, wealth, beauty, and jealousy among other themes. To me, this seems like a VERY conscious artistic and symbolic choice on part of the sims creators, as silly as that may seem. Additionally, there was a book written in 1999 of the same title by Tracy Chevalier in which a 16 year old dutch girl named Griet makes her way into the household of Johannes Vermeer as a maid. Some of the synopsis is as follows: "Girl With a Pearl Earring tells the story of Griet, a 16-year-old Dutch girl who becomes a maid in the house of the painter Johannes Vermeer. Her calm and perceptive manner not only helps her in her household duties, but also attracts the painter's attention..." It later continues, "In contrast to her work in her master's studio, Griet must carve a place for herself in a chaotic Catholic household run by Vermeer's volatile wife Catharina..." What if the story being told here IS actually a sinister one of some kind of infidelity and jealousy resulting in Lolita's untimely death? And what if the reference to the book Lolita is in fact intended? What if The Sims was referencing these two novels as well as the painting by Vermeer? I mean, Gunther's wife's name is Cornelia. It's not too far off from Catharina. And Gunther in and of itself is a name with germanic/dutch origins. Is it a stretch? Sure. But a far far leap? I don't think so. Am I conspiracy theorist for The Sims? Yes. 🤣 Thanks so much for making this interesting video! It was because of this video I subscribed and hopefully my comment does...something for the sims lore community. I dunno!

I really loved this, it really took me back. I was super into The Sims 3 and when I did my BA in English I actually wrote my final thesis on a comparison between a weird form of theatre and the strange type of life simulation voyeurism this game perfected by the whole open neighbourhood feature. (Best moment was my literature professor calmly and unironically having to tell my 65-year-old linguistics professor what the topic of my thesis was during my oral exam whilst keeping a straight face.) The fact that Simmers let the game run for ages unimpeded just to track what would happen how many percent of the time (for example, which gender one of the premade Sims' unborn baby would have) is a fascinating aspect of game design / gamer interaction to me. I loved the weird fan community around Sims 3 and how they basically exploited every last pixel of this game for their own strange devices. It was a great time and The Sims 4 sadly never captured that essence for me again. Watching this video made me want to install 3 again :-D

yeah LMAO usually my imaginary friends end up becoming the human Sims highschool sweetheart or something because of how strong their bond was as kids. (and because hey I like how my imaginary Sims look.)
In real life people go from friends in preschool and wind up getting into loving adult relationships so, for me, the imaginary friend turning into a lover later in life isn't creepy. From a certain angle though I can see where it might creep some people out, because the imaginary friend can be viewed more as a sibling than something separate from blood relationships. Isn't it weird how fluid connections between people can be between different folks?

The craziest thing that's ever happened to me in the Sims 3 was I got that super rare event where in University if you let the science students dabble around long with the Group Science Experiment Object, they can accidentally cause an orbital strike on your neighborhood. My sim was just peacefully going about her day, ya' know just tryin' to earn her college degree when suddenly I got a popup notification in the upper right "Something is uncharacteristically dimming the sun, what could it be?". Next thing I look at my Sims moodlets and one is marked "orbital strike imminent", I was like OH SHIT! I'd heard about this happening before in Sims 2 but never saw it. Suffice it to say I told my Sim to leave class early and run randomly around the foothills on the edge of town. Figured if I didn't just stay in one spot the likelihood of her getting killed would be less. The asteroid came down, right in the middle of the campus, exploding over the science division. It started a bunch of fires all over randomly, space rocks were strewn all about everywhere as well as several of those really big asteroid pieces you can sometimes find in the world while watching via telescope. Everyone ran out of class and half the townies died instantly of a heart attack while charred. The other half farther away from the epicenter burned to death in like 30 sims minutes lol. Only silver lining at the end of all of it, was that many space rocks were worth alot of simoleons lol.

The normal gnomes can also start their own families if you have more than one. They also age from baby to elder and then die, leaving a little gold gnome statue on your sims lot.
ETA: Vampire gnomes can also bite any teddy bears on your sims lot and turn them into vampire gnomes as well.
i believe they can start having families in generations (the objective best pack btw) otherwise they just jump around causing chaos

The creator of the infamous haunted doll was actually a well known custom content creator named Rebecah. It's thought that the corruption was a result of some of the early modding tools for the Sims 3 being pretty scuffed, combined with the game's absolute mess of spaghetti code. There were other pieces of custom content that caused a similar issue on a smaller scale, at least from what I've heard. Rebecah is actually still active in the community to this day, and posts custom content on Affinity Sims. She's also a 70 year old great-grandmother who started making custom content when she was around 55, which is pretty badass if I do say so myself!

This is what I did with my very first imaginary friend when I first downloaded the pack. I had this whole plotline that the girl and her imaginary friend were in love since childhood and so her inventing potions since she was small was her desperate attempt to be with him while keeping it away from her dad since he couldn't see her friend and would think she was crazy if she told him. I even set this deadline that I had to make the potion to turn him human before they turned into adults or he'd be stuck as a doll forever (I'm pretty sure that's not actually a thing in the game). Then when he turned human I made him a chef because I loved the idea that he had never been able to eat food before and as soon as he was able to taste it he was in love with cooking.

One time I used cheats and did the "edit sim in create a sim" action on a raccoon because I was curious as to what would happen. To my surprise it was sent to the room where you would edit human sims, not the barn where animal sims are usually edited. This also meant that the game tried to treat it like a human and stretched it out like crazy similar to the toddler glitch. The raccoon was absolutely fucked once I left the editor as well. I was genuinely so creeped out.
I do kinda love the fact that we all encountered these sinister glitches at one point or another. It adds a whole new layer of community when you realize that there are tons of people out there that share these obscure and traumatizing moments from your childhood all connected to the same game that brought you hundreds of hours of fun.
i tried changing a fowl's coat with cheats once and it made the, now adult sized horse, stretch inwards to fit with the small animations. i decided to put it out of its misery and shift click > deleted it

The creepiest thing that I remember from the game was how zombies would randomly pop up in my sim's yard and would stare at them through the windows if they weren't covered. It use to really freak me out.

The best sims save stories always come from the perfect mix of game mechanics, AI and glitches. I had a single mum sim who would somehow glitch out around bars and get stuck on a loop making and drinking nectar while leaving her toddler on the floor. I almost got teary seeing the daughter later grow up and take on the parental role for her siblings, finally raising enough money for the household to celebrate Christmas together.

I played her once ! She had a ghost baby with her former husband, then turned the child into a proper human, thanks to the help of her wife (Kate Pistachio). It demanded a lot of commitment to them, but they succeeded. Then they move together to Isla Paradiso, raised their son and a dog. When Raphaël (the son) became an adult, he moved to Apaloosa Plain to raise horses. Agnes and Kate stayed in Isla Paradiso, bought a house-boat and lived a peaceful life.

I used to play the Sims 3 Console and wondered who Rebecca exactly was. Apparently, she's _likely_ the great granddaughter of Timaeus Goth aka the founder of Sugar Maple Coast, which is the neighbourhood you're in in the game. Since she's a young adult in the game and Sunset Valley's Bella's a kid, I've always thought of Rebecca as like, the 'black sheep' aunt, considering how she (and Timeaus, who's then a ghost) is the only Goth in SMC.

There's really no way to tell if Rebecca is older or younger than Bella though. There's not enough evidence to prove when the timeline of Sugar Maple Coast takes place. The game lacked descriptions that would suggest the timeline and no familiar faces are seen. The same can't be said for Sims 3 for consoles though. Malcolm Landgrabb of Sunset Valley appears in Moonlight Bay, having the same traits as he did in the PC version and his bio saying that he moved out of Sunset Valley. So Moonlight Bay would've been taken place around the same time as Sims 2 as the Sims in that game are adults or turning into elders very soon, which Malcolm will very soon become an elder when you first play the game. That's just my observations though, I'd love to hear what others think.
I'm not from a country where homosexual relationships were openly talked about during my childhood (or ever talked about at all), but Sims 3 became a discovery for me in this regard when my girl sim showed sympathy for another girl. I was so gentle with these relationships, and saw so many opportunities for them to exist in the world. I will never forget how I thought, looking at two girls kissing: I like it, it's beautiful. And then I created myself :D

I remember when my sims 3 file ended up glitching out while playing with island paradise; I had a wedding for two of my sims and, when it was over, everyone had left aside from one sim. He was stuck clapping and cheering for the newly weds until his unfortunate demise. I didn't know the cheats to reset him, as I had no internet back then to look it up, so I had to watch as this man cheered and cheered until Grim came to take him away. His wife and daughter even came over to visit him, too, any interactions they had with him couldn't get him unstuck, despite going through. It was heartbreaking and terrifying
I bought my sims game second hand and one lot had two people just frozen in their house but apparently the lot was always for sale because if you moved a family in then they too became frozen. There are probably soo many sims still stuck on that lot 😂

A glitch I remember finding but never saw anyone else talk about was accidentally creating hobbits. I had two child sims celebrate their birthday one morning but they didn't age up before getting on the school bus. Then halfway on the journey to school they get kicked off the school bus, have their age up animation but stayed the same height of a child despite being teenagers
I had this glitch too when my kid sims were out past curfew and were caught by the police on their birthday, they never stopped being a kids height. Really corrupted that save file haha

I love how the Sims 3 is known for being horribly buggy and unplayable at times, but I am 20 and have been playing it since it came out on various devices (including my own laptop) with like 10 expansion packs on and have NEVER had an issue with bugs or broken game issues.

this almost made me cry... i got the sims 3 as a birthday gift from my mom in 5th grade and became absolutely addicted to it, especially since i barely had any friends, i could spend hours on it. u could even track my interests over time as i went from making generic characters, over characters from my favorite anime and manga, to ocs... :,). it even helped me discover my identity, i still remember the first time i made a sim have a gay relationship, it felt so SCANDALOUS to me xD. it even got me through the death of my grandpa, who was my father figure and whose dementia had gotten deblitating over the summer holidays between 4th and 5th grade. i also bonded with one of the sweetest and funniest girls i ever met over the game, we would spend hours after school sitting in front of my shitty old laptop, making sims while eating candy from the gas station that was near my house (sadly she changed schools shortly after, jula if ur out there... hi :))
ok that was a lot of personal stuff sorry the sims 3 was THE comfort game of my childhood next to minecraft pocket edition, pokemon, animal crossing and tomodachi life (i also have an unhealthy attachment to tomodachi life and even hearing the music makes me cry, i would never dare delete my save file bc it still has the mii my grandpa made of himself on it)

the Imaginary Friend feature ironically reminds me of a fanfiction i used to read some time ago about the main character having a secret unseen power to bring their imaginary friends into existence, albeit very gradually and over many years. the story kinda time skips throughout the boys' childhoods and as the imaginary friend grows older he becomes more corporeal.
the fanfic actually does delve into that existential horror element of someone existing as an extension of someone else's imagination and struggling to figure out if he actually EXISTS in the same capacity as the person who created him. i think about that fic from time to time and even tho it was never finished it was such a field trip.....

@@Arthaius Well they can't to my knowledge. You get ghost babies by woohooing with a ghost, the baby will have the same cause of death as the parent. Idk if they were an accident (haha) or there's something in the code to make it happen. I recommend looking up more about ghost babies, they're kinda fun

@@Arthaius babies and toddlers can become victims of default story progression if you don't manage that family with babies and toddlers, their graves can sometimes be taken from the mausoleum, just like other dead npc's. In addition to a meteorite, elementary school children can burn in a fire or randomly catch fire while working with an inventor's workbench or even get burned during the summer season after a long stay in the sun, I saw a child from the house next door get burned to death. And children can drown in the pool, in one save i had a glitch with sims freedom of will and they couldn't get out of the pool in the community lot without my command and one kid drowned. I left game without saving cuz child was my favourite

I know izzy thought the imaginary doll turning into a person and being able to fall in love with and woohoo with anyone they want, including the person they were given to, but that has like the complete opposite effect on me now that i've learned of its existence. I remember one time in twinbrook..I was trying to level my sims guitar level and half the town was watching her and out of the blue I noted a few sims acting weird and I heard a strange sound ..and before you know it a meteor came down and wiped out all but 3 sims. I was so flabbergasted.

The imaginary friend terrified me as a kid. I remember thinking it was cute and then one day it did or said something so creepy and from then on I never wanted it, if I ever saw it I wanted to kill it with fire. I can’t find what it said but people have talked about how they can become controlling and jealous and mean to your sim and I feel like it must have been something like that.
Mean, yes. Almost every time I had seen my child and their imaginary friend interacting, they were having a fight, seemingly always on the IM's part. It happened so often that their relationship was always in the halves despite all the effort I went through maxing out their friendship. After a certain point, I had my child Sim just tell their IM to step off and never deal with them again.
I thought it was a cute addition when I first got the expansions and played with a huge family. It was the first kid in the household, so I had them grow up with their imaginary friend and got them to max the chemistry lab table object until they could make the potion that makes the imaginary friend real. I used it, came up with a narrative, and had them live "happily ever after". However, every single child after that also received an imaginary friend that I could not sell or delete, that would constantly prompt me to "let them out so they can spend more time with [child's name]" even after that sim had aged up to adulthood. Imaginary friends are now annoying to say the least, and creepy at most. They are unavoidable, never leave, and will constantly be in my sim's inventories for fear of placing them down and them springing to life to unceasingly pester and argue with my sims and keep them from completing tasks and complaining when they don't give them attention. In other words, the imaginary friend system became more of a "clingy nice guy" simulator that you can't avoid.
i absolutely hate in sims 3 that you cannot get off the dating site and everyone stalks you. it's so scary. even married sims. you cannot delete your profile.
The celebrity lore in the late night expansion is absolutely unhinged. The highlights are the Littler and Belle families. There's also the vampire clan stuff which is equally as crazy.
My first and most memorable childhood Sims 3 horror experience was extremely basic, perhaps even iconic. I was 9, playing the game for the first time all by myself. It was my first ever family, no cheats, small budget, I was just learning the game and trying my best to upkeep my sims, get them a job, start a family, expand the house, etc. The sims were married, had their first toddler just recently and the wife was already pregnant with another one. My house was ugly, taking care of the baby and meeting sims needs was stressful, but otherwise it was going pretty well. But then that fateful night came... wife got hungry in the middle of the night, husband got up to make some mac & cheese..... and then, of course, the cheap ass stove caught on fire along with the man. I didn't have a smoke detector because I intentionally sold it earlier to get enough money for a better TV or something (I think I didn't even know wtf a smoke detector was at the time). No help was coming, so the wife ran to the kitchen in panic and tried to put out the fire all by herself. Everyone's screaming, the baby in the back is crying too, it was a very tense moment that felt like an eternity. She kept spraying and spraying while he kept screeching in agony.... he didn't make it. His charred lifeless body fell to the floor and then... *that* track started playing. The shadowy skeletal figure appeared, took the husbands body and disappeared, leaving the weeping pregnant wife all alone in their soot covered kitchen.
That imagery *traumatized* me. Definitely dropped the game for month because I was just too damn scared to return. Also the Grim Reaper's design definitely exacerbated my fear of the dark, I couldn't sleep without my nightlight for years after that because I had that weird ass fear that the reaper will come for me too.
I had a similar experience when I first discovered sims could die, but it was in the sims 2, I didn't know I needed to buy a fridge for them to eat so the mother of the family collapsed of starvation and 11 year old me suddenly sees the grim reaper appearing, I freaked the f outttt
I don't see it brought up too often, but, Tiberium being canon to Sims 3 implies it's in the same universe as the Command and Conquer games, and the Military career events imply the events of C&C are in fact happening at the same time your Sim is just chilling.
I have had so many horrifying glitches in the sims 3. Some, admittedly, are due to a huge amount of mods, but I had what I refer to as "ghost daughter" in a mostly regular save. I only had master controller that I didn't use, and extra clothing. I adopted a baby, and even though I had needs turned off, my sim was always getting a negative moodlet for hearing crying. I checked his relationships and I had a second daughter that just NEVER spawned. She had the same name as my kid, but a totally randomized appearance. I ended up cheating her into my household since she didn't exist anywhere in the town. She was mostly normal for a bit, but she ended up not being able to attend school, get a job, or have a birthday without cheats. I ended up deleting the save because I felt bad for her and was sad about it all the time.
My favorite thing to do with the World Adventures pack was to have a female Sim get pregnant from a random guy from each destination. Then, have the different dads come to visit at different times and never have them find out about each other.
That's the next stage of 90 day fiance. Now I need to try this!
As someone who has OCs, one of my fave things was to imagine the imaginary friends were OCs of the character come to life and it was my fave story to play with
I remember one time I was playing Sims 3 with TONS of downloadable content, making my game super buggy. My sims were in France in that huge creepy mansion, and they all went to sleep. Young me checked on them while super zoomed in on their faces for whatever reason, and one of my sims was just laying there in her bed, eyes wide open yet just white part showing. Never noped out of the game so fast before.
It's been probably more than 10 years by now and I occasionally think about it

I think something cool to point out is that Tiberium, the mineral that gives you Visceroidal Nausea is a reference to another EA published game series, Command and Conquer, an RTS where Tiberium is one of the resources you harvest to produce things.
Not to be "that guy", but the whole "owning land in Scotland and be a Lord/Lady" through Established Titles is dodgy. Obviously it goes without saying that you don't own the land, you're effectively sponsoring it (like you don't own the dolphin or donkey you sponsor through charities), and you can't style yourself as a Lord or Lady officially, because you're not one. They don't make that clear. It's kinda like how companies tell you you can "name a star". You can't. You're paying for a piece of paper that tells you you have, but it'll never be officially recognised. Obviously it's up to you how much that bothers you, but that should always be made clear by the company, except it never is. Also, the environment sector in Scotland has been very critical of the work Established Titles is doing (or not doing, rather) with the millions of pounds they keep in an offshore account. It's also a very culturally sensitive issue. The idea of people being able to "own" land that should be public upsets a lot of people, and it can be seen as a form of neo-colonialism. Scottish MPs and environmental experts alike have been critical of the schemes. Lots of people have styled it as a scam, because you don't own anything, you're not suddenly made a Lord, and the company isn't really doing anything with the money they're making. It's like buying an NFT, but somehow worse.

Tiberium was a "super-fuel" that came to earth via meteor, and as the series progressed slowly turned the world into a sickly green apocalypse. YES! I used to play those games back when I was a kid. They were basically used as a fuel and were the only resource in a lot of those games (most games have 3 or 4). Tiberium would slowly kill a lot of your soldiers if you walked too close, and would sometimes mutate them into horrible monstrosities. I really miss those games
Yep, definitely from C&C, another EA game. Those games take place in the future, where the alien mineral Tiberium has mutated most of Earth's wildlife, absolutely destroyed the environment, and made many places completely uninhabitable by humans. So not only is radiation poisoning canon to the Sims universe, but it's also a prequel to Command and Conquer; a carefree suburban life simulator taking place mere decades before complete societal collapse. Your Sims are throwing parties, falling in love, and catching butterflies blissfully unaware that civilization as they know it is going to come to a very unpleasant end in their lifetimes.
Yeah, that one caught me. In those games its an alien material harvested for its tremendous industrial and energy potential, but which is slowly spreading and poisoning the world, terraforming it into a nightmarish hellscape of glowing green crystals, crystaline mutants, and cataclysmic ion storms.

it’s so funny to hear other people say their parents wouldn’t let them use certain packs, or the sims at all. my parents let me play it all and would even watch sometimes.
Could the weirdly resurrected Twinbrook Sims be a reference to The Shadow over Innsmouth by HP Lovercraft? People with strangely colored skin, "bulgy" eyes, greying/possibly thinning hair, a transformation (of sorts), a heavily aquatic setting; The fact that the town is mostly blocked off, as the people of Innsmouth see outsiders as free game for sacrifices; an offputting atmosphere (green haze vs strong rotting fish smell); their bare feet could be a reference to the weird gait of Innsmouth locals. I'm definitely not the first person to have this theory but it really jumped out at me as I watched.
Playing sims 3 and its open world is so soothing like when it rains ur sims out in work u watch the rain and vibin on ppl walking on your street doin their own thing its just I never felt that with sims 2
The sims games have absolutely phenomenal sound design. I plaid sims 3 twice, *twice* as a kid and I still get super nostalgic whenever I hear the sims 3 sound effects play. Just wow
I didn't know you could actually see the Kraken underwater...Island Paradise continues to be my favorite expansion ever. (Too bad mermaids didn't get skill trees the way vampires and werewolves did in the Sims 4...missed opportunity.)

the only thing missing is my most hated glitch, if you uninstall certain mods wrong, they will corrupt your save and replace all playable sims slot with this random girl sim before making your game just freeze to death. sends shivers down my spine
I had every single expansion pack for Sims 3 because my entire family was obsessed with this game. Lord knows how many times I woke up at 6AM to make yet another new house.
As someone who has always evicted and deleted the default families in every Sims 3 world without even reading their bios, I appreciate this deep dive into some of their lore 😆
I remember when I'd play The Sims 3 there would be this field trip to the Sunset Valley laboratory, where every time I let my sim go on it, they would get stuck in a bush outside of the lab. The only way to get them out was by using commands. The glitch happened pretty much every single time the field trip happened, so it seemed to me like something somebody should have caught.
I can't explain how much I love that life sized doll that turns sentient.

honestly the most terrifying glitch i encountered over and over again were when babies glitched and stretched out like little slenderman demons and performed adult animations instead of their baby animations. Still haunts me to this day

I'm so fascinated by secrets and creepy lore in games, especially innocent looking ones like the Sims. The Sims 3 has the best spooky factor in my opinion. It's a shame how far the series has fallen in terms of lore and cool/scary features. I really wish the Sims 4 had been made with care instead of seemingly being thrown together so they can drain players' bank accounts with DLCs just to make it playable. But I'm still looking forward to a Sims 4 deep dive if you decide to make it, there are definite positives to it as well! Loving this series
I remember when I played ts3 as a kid my sim got cursed by the mummy and my clueless child brain could not figure out how to break the curse. As a result that death sequence scared the shit outta me
Ah, Sims 3. Always holds a special place in my heart for how many hours I sunk into that growing up.
Personally, something I've found a bit creepy that you briefly mentioned is the cursed mummy sarcophagus. Just the fact that your Sim steps in there perfectly fine and then exits like... that... really makes you wonder exactly what is happening, doubly so considering unless you're currently afflicted with the Mummy's Curse, it takes multiple naps in there until your Sim is fully transformed.
Surprised you didn't mention that Twinbrooks is an obvious nod to Innsmouth, from the Lovecraft story "The Shadow over Innsmouth". Basically everything about it and the people who live there line up super well.
The amount of time i spent playing island paradiso and i never knew there was a rare chance for a kraken to appear and even attack your boat all these years later im still learning new stuff about the sims 3

@@BeczaBot both. They're donating some amount to other charities dealing with trees (I don't think specifically in Scotland), but if I understand right the amount is very small anyways. And you just can't become a lady or lord.

Just remembered one of the creepiest Sims 3 glitches I’ve had, one of my towns kept spawning proprietor sims on one of the restaurant lots. Every day more proprietors would spawn, different in names and appearances but all wearing matching suit outfits. They would stand on that lot at all hours of the day, a huge crowd of them facing different directions but silently watching and clapping at a nonexistent performance. There ended up being around 30 of them before it crashed my save.
twin brook also reminds me of shadow over innsmouth, the lovecraft story, especially when you have that one family with the weird family records.

okok SO THIS IS GONNA BE LONG but please bear with me as I explain. It is in reference to Lolita Goth.
To add to the Lolita Goth theory: As an art person who's learned a lot about symbolism and motifs in media as part of my studies, I always thought Lolita Goth held heavy resemblance to the painting Girl With a Pearl Earring. Her hair pulled back behind her head with the band, the earrings, her soft complexion, and the girl's eyes in the painting are even SILVER, like Lolita's! Beyond that, the painting is said to resemble, in a lot of ways, wealth, beauty, and jealousy among other themes.
To me, this seems like a VERY conscious artistic and symbolic choice on part of the sims creators, as silly as that may seem. Additionally, there was a book written in 1999 of the same title by Tracy Chevalier in which a 16 year old dutch girl named Griet makes her way into the household of Johannes Vermeer as a maid. Some of the synopsis is as follows:
"Girl With a Pearl Earring tells the story of Griet, a 16-year-old Dutch girl who becomes a maid in the house of the painter Johannes Vermeer. Her calm and perceptive manner not only helps her in her household duties, but also attracts the painter's attention..."
It later continues, "In contrast to her work in her master's studio, Griet must carve a place for herself in a chaotic Catholic household run by Vermeer's volatile wife Catharina..."
What if the story being told here IS actually a sinister one of some kind of infidelity and jealousy resulting in Lolita's untimely death? And what if the reference to the book Lolita is in fact intended? What if The Sims was referencing these two novels as well as the painting by Vermeer? I mean, Gunther's wife's name is Cornelia. It's not too far off from Catharina. And Gunther in and of itself is a name with germanic/dutch origins. Is it a stretch? Sure. But a far far leap? I don't think so. Am I conspiracy theorist for The Sims? Yes. 🤣

I also noticed that her grave was the only one in the backyard with a flower path leading towards it. Clearly Alluding to the fact that she was special to, and/ or had a significant relationship with, someone in the family. But why only her?
@@LuckyEevee33 thats exactly what I said in my comments - daisies on her grave are straight reference to Lolita's quotes from book/movies. 'I was a daisy-fresh girl and look what you've done to me' - which makes this not creepy but gross for this game

if you're interested in the rest, it's pretty easy to add on cracked copies to legit ones for the sims 3 ! (if you don't use a launcher for em, as far as I know)
I really loved this, it really took me back. I was super into The Sims 3 and when I did my BA in English I actually wrote my final thesis on a comparison between a weird form of theatre and the strange type of life simulation voyeurism this game perfected by the whole open neighbourhood feature. (Best moment was my literature professor calmly and unironically having to tell my 65-year-old linguistics professor what the topic of my thesis was during my oral exam whilst keeping a straight face.) The fact that Simmers let the game run for ages unimpeded just to track what would happen how many percent of the time (for example, which gender one of the premade Sims' unborn baby would have) is a fascinating aspect of game design / gamer interaction to me. I loved the weird fan community around Sims 3 and how they basically exploited every last pixel of this game for their own strange devices. It was a great time and The Sims 4 sadly never captured that essence for me again. Watching this video made me want to install 3 again :-D
