I read the Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches last summer on vacation while pregnant. So most of my vacation was laying around on the couch vibing with this wonderful cozy fantasy, with sunlight streaming in. An instant favorite, and I love that I have such nice memories to associate with it.
I read The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches after finishing The House in the Cerulean Sea because I was looking for more cozy vibes and it did not disappoint! I am very excited for Klune and Mandanna's new releases this year 🙂
I think Harry Potter must be a cosy fantasy - the parts I love the most are the characters down time where they go to class and chat in the common room!
Definitely! I'm in the middle of the series atm and although it does get a bit more intense, the overall vibe I get from the books is just a great sense of coziness.
Hey, just wanted to point out that this book exploits the history of residential schools that harmed indigenous communities. The author admitted that in an interview. Just wanted to point it out. Do what you want with that information
Grace of Wild Things by Heather Fawcett is an adorably cozy reimagining of Anne of Green Gables but with a witch and dash of ghibli's Kiki. There is a familiar and found family/friends. Sarah Addison Allen writes magical realism that can feel so cozy. The Sugar Queen, Garden Spells, and Other Birds are so lovely. I also liked The Girl Who Chased the Moon but remember it felt a bit heavier even if there was a gentle giant.
One of my favorite book series as a kid was The Borrowers so of course my fav Ghibli is Arrietty! So cute and sweet. I'm a big fan of dark fairytale cozy.
Two books I've never heard people talk about but are very cute and cozy are Welcome to Fae Cafe and The House Witch. They are both a bit silly, don't take them too seriously, but they are such a good time. The House Witch has some very 90s high school juvenile humor but it was so nostalgic for me and I really loved the characters and the dynamics and especially the character growth.
Surprised to have read a few of the books mentioned. Guess I was more of a cozy reader than I thought :D The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea was an amazing read! The way the author just paints the scene, it does feel like a Ghibli movie, the streets beneath the sea had me in awe, and the characters too - just, can't even describe how I felt reading this one. Personally have Margaret Rogerson, Half a Soul, Encyclopedia of Faeries and Six Crimson Cranes in my tbr rn. And may I add some cozy sci-fi to the conversation: Becky Chambers' books are so cozy and low-stakes and it's like hanging out in space, very slice-of-life!😊
Legends & Lattes was my first exposure to Cozy Fantasy and now, I crave MORE of it!. Also, I own several of these titles already and have read a few of them either earlier THIS year or I did so last year. To be specific; I own, L&L, Irregular Witches, Wild Faeries, Bookshops & Bonedust (the prequel to L&L,) Bakers & Magic, Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, House on the Cerulean Sea, The Bookshop & The Barbarian and as we speak, I'm reading Under the Whispering Door
Kiki's delivery service is so good. My granddaughters got me to watch it and the charm of the anime completely took in this old dude so I got the book as a bedtime story for them in turn.
As well as The Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, I find her* Hamster Princess series really cozy fairy tale retellings. They're kids books, with fun illustrations, that I would have loved as a kid. *As Ursula Vernon.
Harriet Hamster Princess books are so good! I originally got them for my niece but ended up getting copies for myself to read on my own (unironically), just delightful!
Elliott i think you'd love The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy. I'd describe it as a fantasy romance with cosy vibes. The main characters get to know each through anonymous letters which are really sweet, funny and vulnerable. There is a great family dynamic and wonderful side characters with good queer rep. The writing reminded me of T. Kingfisher as it has darkness mixed with humour. Both MCs are in their 30s plus the female MC describes herself as 'tall and big boned' AND she wears glasses!
I really liked Kiki's Delivery Service. I am curious about the sequels. The movie is fantastic too. I actually liked Bookshops and Bonedust better than Legends and Lattes. The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches is such a wonderful book. I also really enjoyed An Enchantment of Ravens. I think it deserves way more love. I own the Elizabeth Lim books but haven't read them yet. I'm trying to read more of my physical tbr this year and get library books online from Libby, so I'm hoping to get to them this year. Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries was exactly what I want from a book about the fae.
Thanks so much for sharing, I instantly added each of these to my TBR (the ones I haven’t read) 😂 Some of my other favorite cozy fantasy novels that are not on this list include House in the Cerulean Sea, The Witch’s Heart, Spells for Forgetting, and The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy! 💚
I am new to your channel, found you through jessethereader! Thanks so much for this guide! I just got into cozy fantasy through The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches and loved it! A lot of the books in the guide are already on my list of things to read so I am looking forward to all of them! One book I found really cozy/heartwarming is A Constellation of Roses by Miranda Asebedo. The female MC has been on her own for most of her life, either on the run or in foster homes, and finds out she has family in a small town. She goes to live with them and they all have magical abilities. I really loved the found family theme and small-town vibe. One of the family members makes magical food. I found it very cozy and heartwarming but as you said cozy can mean different things for different people.
I hope you'll do more videos on cozy fantasy in the future! I've come to love this subgenre so much, and I know I'm not alone. 🥰 Have you read TJ Klune's cozy fantasy novels? I absolutely adored The House in the Cerulean Sea and enjoyed In the Lives of Puppets (hope I got that name right 😅) as well.
I'd like to mention the "The Wandering Inn" series, even though the books have high stakes, there's a lot of downtime when people just “live” and hang out.
David Eddings' classic series Belgariad, Elenium, Mallorean and Tamuli all seem kind of nostalgic cozy nowadays. Also, Piers Anthony's Adept series. And anything by Andre Norton.
I think I always gravitated toward cozy stories when I was growing up, and one of my favorite fantasy authors was always Robin McKinley. Most of them would be in the fairy tale category and my absolute favorite is Spindle's End. She also has two versions of Beauty & the Beast that she wrote like 20 years apart, and then I think her Damar series hits more of the classic fantasy tropes.
❤📚❤️ There are so many great recommendations! I've read several of these. The rest are definitely on my Goodreads "want to read" list! Thank you for sharing!
Another fantastic (😉) list! Thank you!! One of my favorites that could go in the adventure list is The Highwayman by R.A. Salvatore. It's got such a gorgeous setting and wonderful characters.
Half a Soul one of my favorites! Love the main character so cute and cozy and sweet ✨📚📚✨🪻🌺🪻✨✨🪻🪻🌸📖🌸🌞🌞🌻🌼🌼❤️💕💕📙🫶🏻🫶🏻✨📚📚📚🪻🪻🫶🏻✨📚📚📖✨🫶🏻🌸📖🌸🌞🌞🌞❤️🌼🌼❤️🌷💕💕📙🌺🌺🪻✨📚📚📚📚📚📚✨🫶🏻📖📖🌸🌻🌞📚📚📚📚🌞📚🫶🏻🌺📖🌻📖
I always like to mention Ascendance of a Bookworm for cozy fantasy. It’s isekai, the main character is a book lover, it’s got a few high points but otherwise it’s got so many cozy things going on. I wish more people talked about it! There’s also so many different ways to get into it. There’s the light novels, the manga, the anime . There’s also a lot of it, so plenty to love! 💙
I’ve been consuming low stakes/‘cozy’ manga and anime for years. While I didn’t love Legends and Lattes as much as many other people, I still greatly appreciate this genre making its way into novels. I’ll definitely be checking out some of these books
I would recommend the girl who drank the moon. It's so cute! With a mini dragon, swamp monster and babies that feed on starlight. And the main character is named luna!!
Cozy Fantasy books has been a hit (The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, Half a Soul) or miss (Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries) for me, but i want to try out some more before i give up on this subgenre. I did realize i enjoy Cozy Mystery, especially detective stories, way more than Cozy Fantasy tho.
I really love coming of age stories, especially if its implied. I just saw a trailer here on youtube from a group called TomorrowxTogether, they encapsulated the essence of The Little Prince. It was so heartwarming
It may not be considered "cozy" by everyone but my favorite series is Spice and Wolf. I love the light novel series, I love the original anime and I am incredibly excited for the reboot.
If you enjoyed Legends and Lattes, check out SL Rowland. Cursed Cocktails is similar. And so adorable. SL Rowland has this amazing ability to incorporate all 5 senses into his books. He also creates great characters and worlds. Another book by him which is in the same universe as Cursed Cocktails and is more Adventure Cozy is Sword and Thistle.
Thanks for the recommendations! I’m at a point in my life where I’m both physically and mentally exhausted, and I haven’t had any drive to pick up a book. I primarily read science fiction and fantasy and reading something that would require my mental energy has really put me off. I’ve been reading Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erickson for probably a year now for that reason, even though I’m very much enjoying the book. I actually picked up The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches last night, and I’m excited to see how I like it :)
Have you read the series 'the hundred' by Vanessa Nelson. It's a 6 book series, not very long books, and I love it. It's so cozy, it also has adventure, slow burn romance, magic, family, friends and community, different races. The main character survived a very traumatic event as a teenager that shaped her life but i didn't feel traumatized by the references to it which i really appreciated. I found it lovely read and have reread it a few times. Comforting
I think you should midlife magic by k f breene. So much fantasy, romance and realistic as it follows a 40 year old woman rediscovering her life. At first i was put off thinking it be boring. But low and behold it was so much fun
An Enchantment of ravens l enjoyed loved this story 🫶🏻📖📚📚📖🫶🏻📖🌻🌸🪻✨❤️🌼🌷🌷💕🫶🏻📖📚📚📚📖🌺🫶🏻🌸🌻❤️❤️❤️🪻🪻📙🌼📙🦋🦋💕🌞🌺🌺🌺📖📖📚📚📖🌺🌺🌺📖📚📚📚📚📖🫶🏻🌺🌞🌻🌻🫶🏻✨✨❤️❤️🌼📙🌷🦋💕🌞🌞🌺📖📚📚📚📖🫶🏻🫶🏻📚📚📚❤️❤️❤️✨💕🦋🦋
Don't judge me but I kind of DNF'd Legends and Lattes. Will definitely go back to it though. I think I just wasn't in the right mood for it. I'm interested in Six Crimson Cranes and Spin the Dawn and you're kind of making me want to reread AWGTDB.
I wanted to love Yumi and the Nightmare Painter but I didn't know who Hoid was, or who the owner of the noodle shop was, and i didn't understand the conversation between these 2 at the end. 😢
Wizard for Hire and Confessions of a Christmas Cookie Pirate and Magyk. Are 3 funny and cozy fantasy books, might be for a younger audience ? but I could easily enjoy them all and Im 50yo Edit: they are all the first book in a serie.
If you love found family, Under the Earth, Over the Sky by Emily McCosh. Fae king finds human baby, feels like you’re reading the elven chapters from Tolkien with the same growing darkness.
I would really like a slice of life book that has zero plot, just people going about their lives (the less romance the better). The books I've read that were in this video are legends and lattes, tress, and wizard's guide, and they did not feel at all cozy to me. but i guess things like that won't sell (as books. i know i can find this in anime). i think i'll find myself a copy of kiki's delivery service, it's been a while since i watched the film. i like to separate book and movie adaptations in my head so i don't get expectations. took me years to finally watch howl's moving castle because i saw movie Howl and thought he's not supposed to be handsome (drama queen book Howl > movie Howl)
You call it "Down time" But I think their is already category word for it and it is "Slice of life". Mostly from anime and asia, but only for more "Cozy" of the stories.
Is Kiki’s Delivery Service appropriate for a 11-12 year old. My daughter has read all the Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Keeper of Lost Cities, and many more. I may read Kiki’s but I have a lot on my TBR list before it. Also, have you made a video on books for Tweens/ Middle School age? Thank you for your videos! Have a lovely day!
I am an outlier here but Legends and Lattes has no appeal to me at all. When I heard the premise and saw the cover, my immediate reaction was that I don't see myself ever reading it.
I'm so disappointed that Cursed Cocktails and Sword & Thistle aren't on here! Cursed Cocktails is like Legends and Lattes but with a cocktail bar, and S&T is a semi-related sequel with a cozy adventure.
unfortunately Green Rider looses that tone in the next book or so. I was gutted as I loved the first book and thought it would become a top fav series due to my "horse girl" roots. But I DNF the series at about book 4. The author didn't help with her attitude either
when it comes to cozy fantasy, I think Booktube really hampers itself by not looking at Japanese light novels. The amount of slice of life fantasy available from Japan is huge. Same with the selfpub genres/formats like litrpg and web serials. Wandering Inn(American web serial) I killed slimes for 300 years and maxed out my level Campfire Cooking in Another World Anything written by FUNA Soara and the House of Monsters Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen(cooking spin off to WHA) and many more are available from the manga publishers and are wonderful!
The House Witch by Delemhach definitely falls in the first category. Low stakes, cute, and charming. It’s so sweet!
I read the Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches last summer on vacation while pregnant. So most of my vacation was laying around on the couch vibing with this wonderful cozy fantasy, with sunlight streaming in. An instant favorite, and I love that I have such nice memories to associate with it.

The Weasley home is the definition of cozy..☺️
this is true but Harry is an a-hole so how cozy can it really be?
Too much action for a cozy fantasy imo
The house in the cerulean sea is worth mentioning 😊 can't wait for the sequel
Hey, just wanted to point out that this book exploits the history of residential schools that harmed indigenous communities. The author admitted that in an interview. Just wanted to point it out. Do what you want with that information
I just wanted to say that grumpy and moonlight was a very good and clever way to explain that trope twist.
Grace of Wild Things by Heather Fawcett is an adorably cozy reimagining of Anne of Green Gables but with a witch and dash of ghibli's Kiki. There is a familiar and found family/friends. Very much enjoyed this video. I'd like to recommend an oldie but a goodie - Sorcery and cecilia and the chocolate pot.
Kiki's delivery service is so good.

I loved Yumi and the nightmare painter !!!! It's my favourite Sanderson secret project:)
Cozy fantasy is definitely one of my favourite subgenres! I've noticed we are getting more and more cozy scifi releases as well which is exciting!
Elliott i think you'd love The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy. I'd describe it as a fantasy romance with cosy vibes.

The Monsters We Defy needs to be more popular. I loved this one when I read it last year.
Is there a Fantasy book with cute dogs?
I don't know. But what I know is Lord Fifth, a badass parrot just google Lord Fifth 😊
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches has a sweet golden retriever named Circe. I, too, am curious about other cozy books with dogs.
There is a funny cat in the cat who saved books
Emily Wilde has a dog!
Jim Butcher has a series The Dresden Files that has a super hero dog. Not a cozy, but a fun series.
ooOoooh my classic cozy fantasy books are definitely the Redwall series… describe to me delicious feasts and picnics any day 😋💕

I like some cozy fantasy, but I have to be in the mood for it. It might be better for me watching as a show or movie than reading about it.
Don't judge me but I kind of DNF'd Legends and Lattes. Will definitely go back to it though. I think I just wasn't in the right mood for it.
I'm interested in Six Crimson Cranes and Spin the Dawn and you're kind of making me want to reread AWGTDB.
Eva Evergreen Semi Magical Witch is a middle grade book very Kiki's inspired
Great list! Thank you.

Check out The Weary Dragon Inn series by S Usher Evans. Very cozy!
If you love found family, Under the Earth, Over the Sky by Emily McCosh. Fae king finds human baby, feels like you’re reading the elven chapters from Tolkien with the same growing darkness.
I really need more of your dragons 🎉
I just finished Jade Legacy so now I'm in desperate need of something cozy

Thanks so much for this video 😇
A recommendation- from the Tortall Universe. “Protector of the Small”
Was just waiting for legends & lattes lol
I love your shirt! Where did you get it?
I need that Jinx top asap 😍
I love Howls Moving Castle❤❤❤
Is Kiki’s Delivery Service appropriate for a 11-12 year old. My daughter has read all the Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Keeper of Lost Cities, and many more. I may read Kiki’s but I have a lot on my TBR list before it. Also, have you made a video on books for Tweens/ Middle School age? Thank you for your videos! Have a lovely day!
Kiki's Delivery Service is more than appropriate for any age to watch, but read I'd say 11 upwards to read.
Great Video!
Hi! Does Six Crimson Crane have a love triangle?
Legends and lattes: Does it have romance too?
I have a film script based on the Magus book by John Fowles would you like to review it?
I am an outlier here but Legends and Lattes has no appeal to me at all. When I heard the premise and saw the cover, my immediate reaction was that I don't see myself ever reading it.
Sick shirt
I'm so disappointed that Cursed Cocktails and Sword & Thistle aren't on here! Cursed Cocktails is like Legends and Lattes but with a cocktail bar, and S&T is a semi-related sequel with a cozy adventure.
Be careful which "Princess Bride" you pick up. One is like the movie, one is definitely not. lol
I’d put the monk and the robot series on this list as well. Love those books
Kiki’s Delivery Service is one of the best books I've read and watched
Does anyone else see a crazed rabbit face on the cover of Spin the Dawn?
The manga, Frieren:Beyond journeys end.
Live me some Emily Wildes❤
unfortunately Green Rider looses that tone in the next book or so.
Wandering Inn(American web serial)
I killed slimes for 300 years and maxed out my level
Campfire Cooking in Another World
Anything written by FUNA
Soara and the House of Monsters
Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen(cooking spin off to WHA)
and many more are available from the manga publishers and are wonderful!
