As an Art Therapist I've been searching for a video that accurately represents our field. This is the best video on Art Therapy that I have found! Thank-you for your informative and entertaining presentation!!! Finally, something I can post and share!
I'm considering this career & was wondering if you could enlighten me with any info on if you have job stability & financial security in your career. This is my dream career, however I'm terrified to have to fork over thousands just to get $30k a year. Any info would be great:) thanks in advance
I am about to start a masters program in clinical counseling, and hope to implement art therapy one day as well. What were your experiences in becoming an art therapist?
I just graduated after 4 years of Graphic Design. Sometimes it's hard not to compare your work to others. I kinda lost my passion so I'm taking a gap year to dive into my creativity & create things that makes me happy.
I am a professional artist. When I was 8 years old I was dealing with a crippling anxiety. My mother did a very smart thing and bought me paint-by-number sets. Painting by number was like meditation for me, allowing me to experience flow (loosing track of time and place). Coloring books today are much like the paint by number sets in the 50's/60's. Those paint by number sets sparked my passion for color and shape. I continued to pursue art and completed an MFA. One never knows the value of an activity in ones life...for me paint by number was only the beginning!
I am very grateful for this talk. I have chronic major depression and am just seeking ways to practice art therapy for myself. I have witnessed how art therapy has helped others who have had addictions, depression, suicidal ideation. Thank you for promoting these healing modalities. It is so very much needed and so very valuable.
I wanted to understand art therapy more and after watching this, I got a deep understanding of its' beauty, purpose, and importance of art and its powerful role in expression and healing
Agreed... Right.. I became much more interested and seeking it's understating After a Art Class I participated in while in Group Therapy long ago.. I felt Awesome After Art Class every time.. I actually miss that Therapy Group Session.. But totally agree with you here...
Thank you for this video, as an Art Therapist, I am always answering the questions you discuss, the adult coloring book "craze", and what Art Therapy actually is. Excellent video on the profession and its ability to help someone heal.
If only I could have had art therapy instead of the psycho bla bla and prozac. What a waste. BUT at 77 I am doing it now and LOVE it! Art should a course from grade one until you get your PHD.
Coloring or anything even remotely like it is a place where many people feel safe to start to be creative. Coloring is therapy because it allows you to get out of your own way. The mind shuts off an you go into the zone of just coloring and not having to think about what to do next. That far surpasses any experience I have ever had paying for therapy.
Agreed! It's a great place for someone to start who is so closed off the their creativity or who hasn't yet familiarised themselves with a particular medium
Thank you for this inspiring, highly informative and entertaining presentation! I am considering an education in art therapy on a background of a masters degree in visual communication, many years in marketing communications and a lifetime of being an empathic listener and go-to-for-any-kind-of-advice and lift-me-up person. This is the first time I’ve seen something that makes me feel that I could actually do this. So, thank you,
One of the most inspiring videos! The term creative journey is quite intense! Indeed art is a free form of expression. Art therapy heals and it also does express feelings ... hidden feelings, expressions, confessions , self realization and it's definitely a world in itself . A beautiful video and message indeed!
I hate what you said about the adult coloring books being safe. You just did what my parents did when I was around 3-4 years old; as most parent did....."You have to finish that page before you are allowed to color the next.....and you have to stay in the lines". I am a clay sculptor that because of injury and illness I can't sculpted anymore. I began using the coloring books as a beginner to a new safe art for my body and to begin to find my way back to artist self. I felt your judgement and am discouraged. I'll try to remember what my first art professor asked me when I said I wasn't an artist yet to a fellow classmate; as it was my first "formal class"....it being college and all. She asked me a question.....Why aren't you an artist"? Think about it. BTW loved the rest of your talk.
You just said yourself that coloring books are safe. That's not a judgement on you at all. If they get you doing your art again, that's fantastic. But that's not what art therapy is.
What is the definitive separation between having clients play with art and having true art therapy? I guess, I want to know what makes it necessary to have a masters degree?
Hi Gerry, it is necessary to have a master's degree for a number of reasons. First and possibly most importantly, it ensures a set of standards from which to interact with clients. Art therapy is a legitimate mental health discipline, often enacted by registered art therapists who are also licensed counselors. Clients can be mentally or physically well or ill, and art therapists have been trained across a multitude of media and therapeutic approaches to engage diverse needs. Art therapists, on that note, are also trained in social justice and diversity, and as such, work to uphold multicultural understanding in their practice. Art therapists work with the client to draw conclusions from artwork and the client's thought process and to set goals and develop healthy patterns of living. Art therapists are trained in psychology, and employ a number of intervention methods both to engage the client and keep them safe. They have a code of ethics that they adhere to and use assessments to keep their treatment goals in sight. Playing with art may be fun and stress relieving, but it does not do the same job as having a client-artwork-therapist relationship.
Watching this particular speaker, I can understand your confusion. She has done a woefully inadequate job representing and explaining the profession. I think if she had any decency or respect for her fellow art therapists, she would do us a favor and take this video down. It is full of cliched, vagaries and cheapens the whole field. In addition her tone is annoying, presumption of expertise is appalling, and attempts at humor fail, especially when she chuckles at herself. Whatever.
Expressive art facilitators can guide clients/patrons/students through expressive art practices without any training in psychology. (Art or teaching experience is helpful) Such experiences are meant for personal self reflection and not intended to diagnose or support issues of mental health. The Masters Degree allows for a relationship between client and therapist backed in both art & psychology. Issues of trauma can safely be discussed and goals set and supported for growth.
No, it may be calming or stress-relieving or whatever, but therapy requires at least two people to be present as it's all about the relationship with another person. There's a place for adult colouring books, but they're not therapy per se...
You're coloring lines that have already been put in place by someone else, they're not an expression of your inner self. So no, they're not real therapy.
Not the same. Coloring is a structured individual activity often used to de-stress and for relaxation as opposed to unrestricted activities created under the guidance of a professional therapist in attempt to grow or heal. Is coloring a beneficial activity? Sure! But it’s not therapy.
I use to Enjoy Coloring Books myself... STILL Will probably sit and test My Coloring Book Skills for my own pleasure.. I see something cool in Coloring Books still.. To Eaches Own tho.

You are incredibly lucky to have had support with art both as a child and all the way to the Master's degree level. Namaste.
