    This is one of those sketches where it is absolutely vital that none of them break character. And all of them are amazing because they play it perfectly.

      @@jmpalacios She had to have a funny reason not to put out Christmas treats for Santa, because those two granola characters are absolutely Christmas and Christmas treat fans who would absolutely put out treats for Santa, even with no children present in the household.
      The "excessive rat problem" makes it an outrageous, exaggerated and silly excuse not to leave out the food. Of course that's what makes it funny!
      Remember, this is a parody of The Delicious Dish, a real NPR show that features two granola types who probably drive Subarus, endlessly recycle, eat vegan diets and would never have any rat problem in their home.

      You're so right, it's that authenticity that makes an otherwise absurd sketch become plausible and hilarious. The character of Terry Rialto instantly reminds me today of Terry Gross from Fresh Air.

      Oh man, the "tap water and rice" had me wiping tears out my eyes for minutes after my fit of scream-laughing concluded... I literally cannot comprehend the force of will required to act in a sketch & pull off a practically flawless no-break execution at this level. It's absolutely superhuman in my eyes #notworthy

      I also love how the audience knows it's coming, but not how, and when the punchline is finally delivered, the audience looses it. Pure genius writing and delivery.

      the difference between then and now. Todays writers would have beat the punchline into the ground 30 seconds in and not let go of it. This is measured, comedic restraint at its finest.

      @@40677 you're right about that. When I was in college, my painting professor would put on classical music on NPR and it was super soothing. Then, the announcements would come on and even they spoke in soothing voices that were enough to put me to sleep lol.

      There was this standup comic years ago who had a particular routine that involved the constant arguments his parents had. They would always be yelling at each other. "They would bawl all day long! They'd be in church... bawling up and down the aisles! Just bawlin' away!"

    What was so great about this to me was that it was a throwback to the fearless nature of the spirit of the original cast. Go as close to the edge of the line as possible without crossing it. Sheer genius and brilliantly performed.

    I remember watching this live back in 1999. My oldest daughter was 4 and my youngest daughter was a newborn. I screamed and then laughed so loud I woke them up!

      That's what made this the funniest. Even any of them would have laughed the entire skit would had failed. But, they were all dead on in their characters. If Jimmy fallon would have been in it, he would have destroyed it by laughing.

      I think I liked the samurai series from John Belushi the most, like samurai delicatessen and samurai psychiatrist. But this is definitely the best after-classic-SNL sketch. Which isn't saying much. It's like saying Yogi Bear is smarter than the average bear. This is why I always watched mad tv instead.

    i was working in long beach hospital, when a patient asked me to close the door and sit by him. he played a tape of this schweddy baiis . i laughed my ass off.he died afew weeks later since then i am reminded of him often when i consider his pain he gave me joy hearts of joy true story

    I’ll never forget this segment. It’s the most hilarious thing I’ve ever seen on SNL. I was only a lad at the time, but I cried and was lying on the floor gasping for air I was laughing so hard.

    I remember when this first aired. Such a well-crafted sketch; the chuckles were like breadcrumbs leading the audience on a 5 minute walk into the punchline. Part of the genius too was framing it with an environment and characters so antithetical to dirty jokes, and the players sold it perfectly.
