Awesome! Awesome! I too was born in El Salvador (1980) during the war. Though I my fam and I left when I was just four years old so I have no memories of the war. But my fam would tell me stories about it. And to find out that this song was about that time makes that song even more epic to me.
One of my favorite songs ever. The incredible thing is that it isn't even the best or second best on the album. The Joshua Tree really plays like a greatest hits record. Totally stacked.
Pierre Conrad have to agree. I remember working in a record store when it came out. we got an advanced cassette promo. held an all night listening party the night before its release. I was like "they did it. they made an Abbey Road"
"I remember the...smell...of...I suppose being near a warzone. I really don't think we were in any danger - I don't want to exaggerate that - but I knew that lives were being endangered or being lost...close to us...and I felt for them." I grew up in Yuogslavia during the ethnic cleansing of Bosnians. I live so far away from that now, but what Bono said there is exactly how I still feel about it. It never stops haunting you, and you never feel worthy of the pain it brings you because you know there are others who have had it much worse, because you don't dare dishonor their pain by equating yours with it.
I only see and hear about these terrible things on TV, but I do feel some of their pain. Also makes me feel powerless and sad. The world is nuts, that's my conclusion.

I say this all the time. I am an English major. I can write. I can write well. There is, however, a tragic difference between communicating well and poetry. There are those who can simply turn a line, a rhyme, poignancy prolific in a few words. I just don't have that and it's amazing when you see it.
One thing I love is when someone can incorporate verses from the Bible into song. Bono does this so beautifully and poetically. One of my favorite u2 songs live.

I was fortunate enough to see Hendrix in 1970 a few months before he passed into the spirit world. Edge is close. But make NO mistake. Hendrix was that super rare person who conversed with the audience like a chat with a friend. Sometimes in words and sometimes in unbelievable riffs. Close but Hendrix was simply the best!
My sister's father-in-law was a staunch, right-wing, Reaganite but with a heart. He was quite wealthy. He was also appalled at what was happening in El Salvador. He went there even though he was quite elderly and when he saw what was happening, he immediately started sponsoring those who were in peril of their lives and brought hundreds of them to America. Once he got them here, he provided housing, food, and daily sustenance while assisting them in finding jobs. He must have brought several hundred such refugees to Texas and spent a tremendous amount of money on the endeavor. I always saw him as an uncompromising right-winger until the day he began this quest.
I'm an American, and I can tell you that most Americans have no clue what their "leaders" are doing in their names. Politics has devolved into a personality driven, reality TV show with no real discussion of policy positions. This is evident by the two piles of steaming dung we're given to "choose" from every 4 years; one served on a red plate and the other on blue. And we'll use all kinds of mental gymnastics to convince ourselves that our pile of dung is better than the other. Then we'll run to Fox or MSNBC and CNN to reaffirm our biases. Nothing will change until a viable third party dedicated to the needs of the working class is formed. That, and the cops (who are blue-collar, union labor themselves) realize that they are protecting their own enslavers, and decide to stop brutalizing their fellow common citizens at the behest of the oligarchs.
I wonder how driven he is to write more songs about america during the last 4 years...Im sure he must have been fit to be tied many times like many of us....#tRUMPHELL
I think it’s more of a telling off, a reminder that we have strayed from the ideal America we proclaim to be, rather than anti-American. Bono has often spoke about his love of the “idea” of America, and how it so differs from the current reality of America. I think many of us share those views. I know I do.
This is why U2 is probably my favorite Christian band. Granted, they happen to be Christian. But it's so nice to see them interpret scripture in different ways and make it their own. That's what makes me unsatisfied with the Christian music industry today because it's mostly the same sound, same ideas. There's nothing really wrong with that, but it doesn't seem to allow for more artistic exploration.
I 'm a bit speechless...very refreshing stuff. In the Montreal Gazette this columnist that compiled quotes and extracts of tid bits of Hollywood celebrity-type people in Saturday's entertainment section used to constantly rip in Bono (calling him St-Bono) whenever there was a piece about him ....and seeing this interview now tells me that Bono's intentions were probably, most of the time, taken completely out of context (at most I just used to think that Bono's causes were never really going to be fruitful, never was he a person trying to boost his ego or soemthing). I think Bono here just expressed or explained what he as an artist does and it's completely normal. I think it's absurd that life 'makes' people go into or near hardship to get something recorded...I wonder how 2016 inspired people. Forgive my sloppy writing.
Bono was on to something with his reaction. I’m glad he put that into poem and song. It’s was brilliant. What he felt at the time was a ‘trembling of indignation to a horrific injustice’. A great revolutionary might say Bono was not too far off , at that moment from being a “comrade” of his. 😉
I love this song, and it brings me back to being a kid. Sadly, the U.S. is still getting involved in other countries' wars, and we don't make things better. Both sides do it - Republicans and Democrats - 2024. It is about $$
