Cyberpunk 2077: 4 Years Later - A Retrospective

  • Cyberpunk 2077 has had one of the best comebacks in entertainment history. However, with all comebacks, there's always the initial fall and failure one thing must overcome in order to achieve that comeback. Naturally, Cyberpunk 2077 had a ridiculously botched release that will go down in history. But, looking back at the last 4 years? It's absolutely one of my favorite comebacks ever.
    Like most of these video essays, this took a while to script and edit. Hope you enjoy!!

    I think you forgot to mention the ingame music. All the music artists who contributed with their original, unique songs. All the radios with their proper style. Makes the game so immersive.

    I bought on day one for PC. I never suffered through the horrible console optimization drama. However, it was undercooked at the time. I put it away for a few years. Played through Starfield and said when I was done I would come back to it. I'm glad I did. Especially after coming off Starfield, Cyberpunk was a breath of fresh air. I feel like it's finally completed and they did a masterful job building the world. Always room for improvement but overall, it falls in my top 10 of all time now.

    I’m really happy that CDPR went above and beyond to update and fix Cyberpunk to be the amazing work it is now. So many games nowadays just get ditched for not being initial “success”… with spared updates and cancelling content.
    Like you I was lucky and able to play the game launch day with little to no issues. I loved it then and now I can say it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played.

    Now that all the ground work is done I expect the next Cyberpunk game to be a hit. Just like the Witcher games kept getting better and better, I expect the same for Cyberpunk.

      And the modding community is still hard at work and crossing their fingers CDPR will release a more robust tool kit, in order to build more in the world (especially the empty megabuildings throughout). There are already some amazing mods out there that will help prolong the enjoyment without changing the base game (if you wish). Cosmetics, radio editor, vehicle options, hidden gems side quests, etc. Someone is working hard for a multiplayer option. May take some time to be fully cooked, but it's looking good so far.

    First off great video; I normally play video-essays of topics I enjoy for some background noise and to listen to, but you had me interested enough to watch the whole video.
    I picked up Cyberpunk 2077 back in November of 2022. I had no idea about the game or lore behind the franchise. I fully enjoyed the game, multiple play-throughs, and challenge runs. I had heard of the Edgerunners anime, but I'm not a fan of anime to begin with. Wasn't until after completing the game I made myself watch the Edgerunners show, I was deeply enthralled by the art style, characters, and all the feelings the show had put me through.
    By far Cyberpunk and its media have a great lore behind it. The game is in a far superior form now and should be commended on how the developers didn't just move to a new project. They actually had a love and willingness dedicated to working on this game, that it's not just another paycheck or cash grab for them as many "game companies" abide by these days.
    Again, you've put out another great video Sir.

      First off, thank you for the compliment man it means a lot and the comment itself helps more than you’d think.
      But yes I gotta agree as it was one of the main points I made. These developers actually gave a shit about the game they released and worked TIRELESSLY to make it something to be proud of. It’s unheard of now so to see it was a breath of fresh air

      I do too, it's very special to me and will always occupy an important little corner of my mind. as a fan of the cyberpunk genre for years now, I believe it's almost as fundamental and thematically relevant as great cyberpunk works such as neuromancer, Akira, and blade runner. the writers certainly understand the core themes of the genre and elevate it into the 2020s (it's important to remember that the genre itself was borne of the early 80s) and for those reasons it really feels special, like a great literary work custom-tailored to my favorite themes in fiction. sorry for the ramble i just love it so so much lol

    Great video, choom! You said it all man, lol. I love how you brought up the fact that you did not have any major game breaking bugs when you started on the release edition in 2020--bc I was actually lucky enough to have the same experience on PS4 Pro. Now this is not to say that the game did not crash every 1-2hrs all the time, LOL, but I instantly fell in love with the characters, the universe, and the unique immersive open world that sets this game apart from anything else. And Phantom Liberty is perhaps the best storyline ive ever seen. Not only do you have Stringer fkin Bell, Idris Elba himself, as one of the main characters, but even just the way the actors move on screen makes me have to remind myself that this is not reality. For example, one of the greatest scenes is when you meet Reed for the first time in the court--watching his movements as he slowly hides his gun and backs away from the road...... it's just fkin nova as hell. Not to mention the insane volumes of great music we got from artists like Grimes as "Lizzy Wizzy," Idris, and P.T.'s compositions. Thanks for takin the time to make this. NEVER FADE AWAY

    1.0 impressed me on PC and largely met my hype. By act 3 though, I realized the game just needed more added to it's strong foundation. It just felt oddly bare. 1.5 made it even more fleshed out and probably what should have been the launch version. Then 2.0 gave me everything I wanted, and radical changes that all made the game better. Even stuff I thought we'd never get like melee on a bike got put in, when I previously thought such dreams were ridiculous. I'm glad they stuck it out, as the game deserves it. I have trouble playing anything else now. Beats what they showed off in that 2018 demo.

    Not sure what game some of you are playing. As it is today it performs like what I would have thought at release. In the year of our lord 2024 there are still so many issues and missions where assets don’t load that are required for the mission. A comeback from utter garbage sure, but to say this game is worth the money ignores so many issues that still exist.

    • @ThePxpe
      @ThePxpe  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That’s what I think the main issue with this game is. I praise it because of what I’ve experienced and the game I’ve played. But CDPR seemingly don’t know how to package the game (I guess is the correct phrasing) as it’s almost a case by case sort of thing in terms of bugs. There’s bugs people experience now I’ve never even heard of. It’s definitely worth the money tho considering the main game was $60 + $30 for Phantom Liberty where as the ultimate edition now is $60, maybe $70 depending on where you look.

      Getting to issues of graphic fidelity from issues such as object permanance is a mighty improvement.
      The fact they thought it was okay to have cops spawn behind the player because they had no spawning or pursuit mechanics is hilarious. The fact it took them years to make that system is also hilarious.
      Turning around used to make the crowd system delete and spawn brand new entities.
      Even to this day its a 50/50 for my game to load a texture properly for me. Half the game looks beautiful, half the game is from 2001.
      Then you have the bullet sponge enemies, the weird car-blows-up-when-driver-dies thing, rechargable grenade item usage... and all the rest... hiding one of the best character and world explorations ive ever played... still not worth money. If only Keanu didnt need to be Johnny...

    • @jakubhill8709
      @jakubhill8709 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@alisardius1577 my PC is by no means top tier but it significantly outpaces the minimum requirments to run the game. However, even IF my build was the minimum required to run the game then there should not be a problem regardless. Minimum specs exist for a reason and this should not limit players outside of graphics and some performance. If the game operates in a different way, by this I mean loading assets and core functionality, for those that have a "minimum build" then the company should not be selling it while advertising minimum specs. I highly doubt you have never encountered a single issue that is reminiscint of something devs were putting out a decade ago. These issues aside, there is also the fact that to this day the devs have left numerous promises unfulfilled. The game is dry and repetitive after 50 hours and has as much depth as a milk saucer. The issues are not just bugs but systemic problems that are not outliers but rather a shared experience among many players. I am very interested how so many of these "Cyberpunk in 2023/4" videos come out around the same time as the new expansion and Phantom Liberty and makes this all feel coordinated. There are still glaring problems that cannot be fixed by simply "buy better rig bruh" and creators that sell this game as though it has been fixed do nothing but a massive diservice to the gaming community.

    i just finished my first new playthrough on 2.11 (started on 2.0) as a Corpo and the game is easily on par with the greats. every single complaint and more that i had with the game has been addressed. the game runs incredibly smoothly in comparison to how it ran on my PC in 2022. i just can’t get enough of it now. i think i’m not even going to mod the game, there’s no point imo. the game is a masterpiece.

    @Extreme96PL หลายเดือนก่อน

    For me, this game will always be the biggest disappointment of the decade because instead of bugs, I have problems with the core elements of the game.
    The plot is poorly conducted and uninteresting, learning about the world, gangs, etc. is reduced to a 2-minute intro, it's like reducing the beginning of Harry Potter to 2 minutes and continuing the film from the moment when Harry was already assigned to Grifindor. Act 1 I admits there is a nice quest with Malestrom and the heist is great, plus we have at least a partial introduction to the gangs, which is Mox or Malestrom, something that, in my opinion, should be more developed. Act 2 and 3, however, are, in my opinion, a slippery slope - the whole world, gangs and the player character itself are thrown aside in order to learn about Silverhand's story and his motivation, which is "corporate evil, corporate takes everything from us" even though during the game in fact, the corporation is not doing anything wrong, because Silverhand caused Alt's death through his actions, and V and Jackie died because they decided to rob biggest corpo in CP2077 world. All this means that the player has zero motivation and a complete lack of any negative feelings towards the corporation, because it simply wasn't the corporation that started it. Additionally, although the main plot is not the longest, there are fillers in the game, the most obvious of which is the attack on the power plant in order to capture Hellman. The entire attack takes a good half hour of gameplay, the EMP from the exploding power plant does nothing, so Panam pulls out bazooka from her ass and knocks down the AV. So what was all this action with the power plant for? It was enough to use a bazooka and I don't buy the fact that fucking up a power plant vs. knocking down AV with a bazooka attracts less attention. Additionally, Silverhand's plot, how he takes control of V, etc., is a plagiarism of Joker's plot with minor changes and much worse exectued in CP2077 from Batman Arkham Knight.
    Most of the characters are uninteresting because they either lack of time or are just plain boring or annoying. Jackie is someone we should care about, but we spend maybe 2 hours with him at most. Panam is the stereotypical "strong, independent female character" of today most movies and games. She always scream, is rude to everyone, considers herself the smartest and despises anyone who disagrees with her. Silverhand is an annoying asshole with cringy dialogues every two minutes, plus he has his own agenda against the corporations and constantly tries to convince us how bad they are, even though when he tell all this, we become more and more convinced that it's his fault. River is boring, I have nothing more to add. The nomads from the Panam clan, I don't even remember what they wanted or what their names were. V is also uninteresting, because it is a blank card that was prepared to create a personality based on the player's choices, which did not work, as I will mention later. The only interesting characters are Judy and Takemura, apart from Silverhand, who are the only characters with a written backstory and specific goals and reasons why they want to pursue these goals.
    The most numerous side quests are GIGS, which are a castrated version of contracts from The Witcher 3. Instead of meeting the client, bargaining, interrogating witnesses, looking for clues as to why and what kind of monster appeared, we have MMO or Ubisoft-style quests that involve go there, destroy/kill/steal and come back for your reward. The rest of the side quests offer something more, but they cannot be called interesting - there is also a quest with a stereotypical plot about a serial killer who found god in prison and the game tries hard to make us like this guy. At the same time, the quest is boring because, as I said, it is stereotypical and Joshua, if I remember correctly, has so little screen time that the player doesn't care about him at all, plus the quest is just walking and talking. The only quests that I remember well are the search for River's nephew, the Peraleza plot and Judy's plot, because thanks to them we get to know her a little better. The rest of the quests are uninteresting or involve uninteresting characters.
    The main problem with the gameplay is that there are only 3 types of enemies - those with guns, those with melee weapons and netrunners, who became actual enemies only after patch 2.0, because before that they did practically nothing except pinging. This makes the fight very quickly become boring and repetitive, because you have to fight the same enemies over and over again. For comparison, imagine that in Doom, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Batman or any other game you fight only three types of enemies. Even the bosses are largely the same and recycled throughout the game. With a boss who has a powerloader from Aliens bought from a Chinese dealer on sale, I fought in probably 5 different quests. The only unique boss is Smasher, because he is the only one who not only looks unique, but also has unique attacks. The game is also full of moments when we are only sitting in the passenger seat. Combine this with non-existent cinematography, uninteresting plot and dialogues and you will achieve super boring experience, which will make every other thing seem more interesting. The lack of cutscenes also negatively affects the presentation of the story instead of some epic action, when we have a break from playing we just stare at other characters with poor facial animations. The lack of TPP and cutscenes also makes the face creator completely useless, because we only see our character in the inventory screen, which we enter only to change weapons in slots. The lack of importance of choices practically completely disqualifies 2077 as an RPG game. The plot is linear and most of the dialogue tree and choices are useless because they add nothing to the game. The only choice is the one at the very end of the game where we choose an ending in the style of Far Cry 3 and not even previous CDPR games where the choices influenced the progress of the plot, future quests and shaped the ending of the game. Crafting has been made very shallow compared to The Witcher 3 - instead of going to the appropriate NPCs who craft items, V can open a window in the middle of the street and craft items. Exploration is also not worth it, because we do not find any unique items, as was the case in The Witcher games, where we could find recipes for improving potions or diagrams for unique armors that were aimed at a specific character build.
    As a fan of The Witcher games, I was very disappointed with such a drop in quality in CP2077. Honestly, I wonder if CDPR is going down the same path as BioWare since Mass Effect 3, where each subsequent game was worse than the last and most of the developers left over the years and only the company name remained.

    Since the development was moved to the USA I fear the next game will be filled with DEI virtue signaling nonsense. Also the US devs tend to be very snowflake-y, meaning the game will take ages to develop. Also I don’t trust the Unreal Engine 5. I think they picked it just for the multiplayer capabilities. I fear they will focus on online more than on the single player and that loot that is supposed to be normal quest rewards will be distributed in battle pass, online rewards and twitch drops. I would much rather preferred if they continued with developing expansions for CP77 in RedEngine

      I get those concerns but considering the heads of the studio are legitimately all people that worked on the previous game, I’m not too worried. Same thing with any inclusiveness in the game. They handled it great in the first one, doubt they’ll fumble for the next one. I will say, there’s definitely something special about RedEngine so I’m annoyed they’re going to UE5 but we’ll see. As for multiplayer, as long as it’s more co-op or GTA Online/sandbox based and not centered around a battle pass, I think it’ll be great.
