Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on Roman history continues with a video on the emperor Claudius, an unlikely good emperor, who come to power after Caligula and managed to right the ship of the empire. He was known as a reformer, who curbed the power of the aristocracy, and improved the finances of the empire, as well as the conqueror of Britain.

at 0:40 you write "Claudius 37 - 41 AD" the same years of the Caligula reign. Claudius was emperor from January of 41, to October of 54 AD

Claudius playing the fool in order to survive, shows how smart he was. He even managed to survive Caligula's terror regime. In a royal family were assassinating relatives to get rid of rivals was the norm, being shunned and considered an idiot could save your life. Claudius was despised by his own mother because of his physical defects and shyness. He had a tendency to stutter too. However, Suetonius noted that his stuttering and stammering improved pretty noticeably after he became Emperor. Claudius did a pretty good job in being an emperor.

Claudius's works and Trajan's are the two emperor's whose lost writings I MOST wish could be found. Every day I hope I'll hear some new library was found with all those works... better the odds are so small. If I had a time machine the first thing I'd do is head to every major library and just copy EVERYTHING.

Claudius was the Rain Man of Roman emperors. A guy who was born with several disabilities, both physical in nature and mental, and as a result he was ostracized by his family and treated like a fool. Yet he turned out to be a very talented administrator and military strategist. And ironically the reason why he ended donning the imperial purple was because he managed to survived all of his entire murderous and power hungry clan by pretending to be dimwitted and therefore wasn't perceived as a political threat by any of them.
Augustus was also treated as shit for his health problems in his youth.

gross simplification of the republic. It was a mixed constitution. It had democratic elements (the people's assemblies- who made all the laws and also acted as courts), it had an oligarchic element (the Senate- even then it wasn't restricted- it was simply easier for the great patrician families to enter it) and it had the Presidential element (the consuls- there were two of them to prevent dictatorship-unless in dire times). It was an incredible system for the time and is remarkably similar to modern republics.
@@lewistaylor2858 i like the republic but it wasnt very similar to modern republics. Barely anyone relatively could vote, you needed to have a certain amount of cash to be a senator, the poor were legally disenfranchised in thr assembly of the centuries and tribes arguably, etc
@@forgetful9845 Senators had almost no official role... the poor may have been disenfranchised to an extent (not really) but they were not expected to fight. Only the property earning class fought Rome's wars, hence why they had political privileges. This only changed with the Marian reforms nearing the end of the Republic.

Domitian would be a good one. Personally loved that he just fucked over the senate just like caligula did. He also revitalized the roman coin and made it more silver than probably any roman emperor did. Excellent administrator and was good to the military. The senate did him dirty by spewing propaganda or lies demonizing him after he got assassinated.
Makes me wanna watch "I, Claudius" again.

He was like Caesar in a way. Caesar grew up sick in a smallish family, and Sulla made sure to get rid of him. Now he is "the" roman.
Claudius is my favourite emperor because he was so underlooked, possibly faking or overexaggerating his disabilities to stay alive, successfully managing the empire when many said he couldn't even pick up a pen and unfortunately dying a tragic end. I'm so glad a video has finally been made on him!

Claudius may have historically had bad press agents, but he ended up being one of the more competent Emperors! All hail the underdog! Not everyone is as they seem!
This man was surely underestimated in his time and today. But those who know about him. Know that he was a good and competent ruler. Shame his competency didn't last. When is the next video on the Imjin War coming out? My compliments to all those who made this video a reality.

@@lesetjales6690 In the TV series, Drusus is a Republican by sentiment, opposed to an hereditary form of government. Later in the series, Livia admits to Claudius she would have killed his father if he hadn't died of his injuries when the horse threw him.
Claudius was actually probably the first ruler to assume the function of a central bank and fight a credit crisis by what we know today as "quantitative easing". When the Roman moneylenders conspired to drive up interest rates he opened his coffers and started to lend money at lower rates until the artificial credit shortage was crushed and the market worked normally again.
That was Tiberius, not Claudius.

It's fascinating how the most underestimated individuals often end up being the most notable emperors.
I think just because they are seemingly normal folk. Not big-headed or too proud. Great, stoic men make great, stoic emperors.
Just like a certain Gaius Octavius Thurinus who is ridiculed by everyone for his ill health and perceived cowardice. Who could've thought that he would become the very definition of Roman emperor.

Claudius is one of my favourite Emperor. He is actually very smart, but played dumb to elude the threat to his life. I like him very much. It's sad that he was betrayed by his wife, and give rise to one of the most evil emperors in roman history, Nero.
I'm surprised none of Claudius's writings were mentioned in the video. Much of what we know of Claudius and the workings of the Empire post-Caesar are from Claudius's own hand.

I read "I, Claudius", when I was about 7-8. One of the reasons my live for history was sparked. Good video.
Claudius wrote a history of the Etruscans and Carthaginians. That work is lost to time. He also was the last speaker of the Etruscan language. (sigh) what I would give to be able to read those lost works... Claudius's histories... Trajan's own account of his wars with Dacia and Parthia... I keep hoping one day I'll see someone found some copies in some old ruin...

Imagine if Claudius was the son of Aurelian and completed all the goals and wishes of his father? What a turn of events that would have been for the history books.
There he is! One of my favourite emperors, a shinning example of how good one can be. Love the guy.
I think Claudius' example is used very cleverly to this day in movies and series for a lot of underappreciated, but smart characters. Notable examples are Tyrion from Game of Thrones and Randall in Black Sails. Acting mad or stupid has always been a smart way to conceal your strategic thinking.

I saw the BBC’s ‘I,Claudius’ when I was in 9th grade back in the 70’s, and as a result, fell in love with not only history, but all things Roman.
Claudius may be my favorite Emperor, first becoming aware of him thru the BBC production of "I Claudius" and then reading the books on which they were based; "I Claudius" and "Claudius the God" by Robert Graves. One perhaps mischaracterization in this video is at 21:08 when images of Roman civilization are used to illustrate Claudius's accomplishments. One of those images is of the Flavian Amphitheater, better known as the Colosseum which did not yet exist. It's construction was started by Emperor Vespian, the first of the Flavian dynasty, around 70-72 AD, and finished by his son Emperor Titus.

I greatly enjoy your videos, and normally I would never comment, but I noticed a small error around 40 seconds in (just before the sponsor is mentioned). Claudius is displayed and underneath him the years 37-41 AD are written; but Claudius reigned from 41-54 AD, whereas Caligula reigned from 37-41 AD. Great job otherwise!
We really need an episode like this on Emperor Domitian, in my opinion he's one of the most overlooked Emperors yet one of the most controversial. He was no doubt the most totalitarian Emperor, compared to a Nero or Caligula. But at the same time dealt with corrupt officials and stabilized the Empire in many ways. I think his way of governance was a necessity for the longevity of the Empire, no doubt many people disagree especially those who lived in his era.
Anti-senator emperors like Domitian and Commodus are incredibly hard to get a proper picture of due to the biased, senatorial nature of ancient sources such as Cassius Dio. But you are right, he's definitely one of the emperors I'd love to pin down and write a video about
