How to Test and Replace an Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor P0115 / P0125

  • In this video I go through the steps on determining why you may have code p0115 and/or p0125.. Ultimately, it comes down to two things, the harness connector or the coolant temperature sensor itself. A simple diagnosis that any one can perform at home. This was performed on a 1997 Nissan Maxima. Check with your vehicle's repair manual for testing parameters.

P0115 - An excessively low or high voltage from the sensor is entered in to the ECM.
P0125 - Insufficient coolant temperature for closed loop fuel control.

Just writing to say thanks. You helped me get my temperature gauge working again. This was on my 1990 Volvo 760 GLE with the B280F Peugeot V6. (I have been told that this engine was used in the Delorean). Following your diagnostic steps, on my sensor connector, one pin read 12V and the other 0. Then I switching to OHMS, the other pin read open circuit. So I reasoned that there must be an open in a ground connection somewhere. But instead of trying to fine it , I just ran a new wire from it to ground, measured the voltage again and it dropped from 12V to 5v . I started the car and the gauge now works.

I have a 2004 VW Beetle. A couple of days ago it starting acting strange. The engine wouldn't run right and the air conditioning wouldn't work. I suspected it was the coolant temperature sensor. This morning while the engine was cool I tested the resistance across the 2 ECM pins which should have read at the most 2.5 kilohms. It read 416 kilohms. I replace the sensor and now it runs like it's supposed to. I am so thankful.

The thermostat in question is called a "fail-safe" thermostat meaning that when it fails, if fails in the open position. If you look at the top you will see where the carriage containing the pellet has locked itself in a notch on the body to keep it open.

You state there can only be two possiblities. You could very easily have a break in your wiring at any point on the harness. Two wires twisted (short to power or ground) you could also have a dead circuit in the pcm itself. But 8/10 times, you are absolutely correct.

You have the DMM set at the 200K ohms setting when you are measuring the sensor, so that means 2K ohms and not 2 ohms.

The problem is not every multi meter has set ranges to select from. Some are auto ranging. So if you are looking for 2 ohms, and you see 2k, you might think the sensor is bad when in fact it's good.

The temperature switch is on the top of the engine and places the engine into closed loop once the engine heats up. The temperature sensor, for the dash gauge, is always on the cylinder head to measure the coolant temp flowing through the cylinder head.

    Hello CarsNToys
I want to say great video and I was able to locate my temperature sensor on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.7 for I am getting a ‘gauge not working’ on my gauge-digital dash and temperature gauge does not move. I had replaced the temp sensor and I still get the ‘gauge not working’ error and my temp gauge does not move ( I let the vehicle idle for 15 minutes).
I did the following test with my voltmeter:
    1. Voltage to temperature connector as indicated in your video and I get 4.9 volts.
    2. Tested the OHMS continuity on connector and it passes by giving audible sound.
    3. I ran the Kilo-OHMS test on the old and new temp sensor and I get 5.0 on old sensor and 4.5 on the new temperature sensor.
    4. I brought a new temp connector, which I had not replaced yet because the voltage test to the original connector works showing 4.9 volts.
    5. My electric fan turns on when the engine is idling and when the a/c comes on.
Any ideas on how to test this ‘‘gauge not working’ on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
    Thanks,

Before doing any of this, if you have a three prong connector. Get the car to normal operating temp and unplug the sensor. If the fan comes on, it is the sensor.

You must download a temperature versus resistance chart. That is crucial. My multi-meter was showing 22,000 ohms. Then I looked at the chart I googled and downloaded. It showed that for 80 degrees temperature I would have 22,000 ohms. My multi-meter does measure temperature. The temp reading on the sensor was 80 degrees. I touched the lead right onto the metal part of the sensor. I looked at the chart and noticed that 22,000 ohms was just right for 80 degrees temperature. A reading anywhere from 1,000 ohms to 58,000 ohms (!) is normal reading depending on the temperature of the metallic part of the sensor. .

Once when I was at the junk yard -- snapped off as soon as I gave it a good push, and once by someone else who replaced this sensor before I go the vehicle I'm troubleshooting (rough idle, engine stalling when engine is cold, problem goes away when engine is at op. temp. Great informative video. Very well photographed and explained. Have an 02 Honda Odyssey and the temp gauge shot up to hot and yet coolant is fine. Ironically just cleaned ports and replaced egr valve. Hope my problem is this simple. Within a day after I had the transmission temp sensor go bad. Within a week of that this happens. Again I hope its as simple as the sensor. Do you know if I can continue driving for a little before fixing without causing damage? Thanks for the great video and explanation including water test.

Thank you. I wouldn't drive the vehicle if it's close to over heating. How's the water pump?

    • @RegisReplacement
      @RegisReplacement 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Reservoir level seems fine, no steam and timing chain as well as water pump changed replaced at 108,000 and now has 147,000. Any other concerns?

I just want to say how well you presented this. I am not mechanically experienced but certainly have no trouble following your clear and concise instructions. I do have a P0115 error code... Mechanic could not work it out but I put my cheap Chinese ODBII diagnostic tool onto the car and it clearly told me the fault is a P0115. Now I know exactly what to do to test further.
One question if I may? I have a Peugeot 407 V6 3.0L and the reason why I found out I had a problem was the water guage would shoot up to maximum temp then drop to stone cold... then shoot up again. So to me that makes sense that the coolant temp sensor or the harness is where the fault lies... BUT if it is not there... do you have any suggestions?
    Thank you!

+John Carter Glad to help, John. If all turns out well with the coolant sensor, I'd check the cooling fan motor next. You can simply test them: th-cam.com/video/bf2kvZJx1OA/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for the video. When the car is cold (65 degrees F outside), I only get 950. When the car is warm (90 degrees C on the dash), I only get 65. These numbers seem was below yours. Is the sensor bad? Thanks.

Wondering does this make the temperature gauge stay at level c as in cold blowing cold air still the temperature takes for ever to register & blow hot air.

Also, whenever the engine will not take throttle and stalls as soon as I touch the gas I have to hold the pedal to the floor to get it to restarted. When it is running right I can just turn the key to start it without touching the gas. ECT sensor test OK, 5v from ECM to connector and 2 ohm resistance that drops as coolant temp goes up. This problem can happen when it is hot or cold weather and hot or cold engine temp. 94 GMC Yukon 5.7 can run great for days and then bam, just will not take any throttle.
