Or like he said in the video having 3 different distributors is the key to obtaining product. I’m sure a brick and mortar store like theirs takes priority and they don’t even have to go to websites for live drops. They just make a call or place an order to get theirs.

I’m in Indianapolis and we have 3 card shops. One is cards/memorabilia and it’s far from me but not many boxes/packs, one is mostly Magic/Pokémon and doesn’t have much product at all, and the other, which is the closest one to me, is strictly boxes and he might have a few boxes open for packs. I think it’s awesome that you have the option to buy boxes/packs for every product here. Too bad you’re in Washington. I’ve always wanted to open a card shop but I fear, due to the ups and downs of the hobby, I’ll lose money. Plus, Indy is a kind of a weird market and I mean weird as in we don’t have really have a market. That’s my dream though. A sports card shop or music store. Maybe one day..

That is awesome to hear idk. Pokemon cards are so fun to collect. Hopefully one day we will get to make it down to Florida and can give prime toys and games an interview!
It's not all rainbows and roses having a store. I used to own a shop but closed it cuz the rent just kept going up. It is true what he says how building relationships with your customers will gain loyal customers. But owning a shop was like being married to the business. And owning a card shop was like owning a money pit!! Where does all the money go???? It was always, "Make that sale!!", cuz you got more inventory on the way from your pre-orders. Sure, you might gross a lot of money, but your profits are razor thin because of competition. Owning a card shop is a young man's game. I just sell online nowadays, and its way easier and less headache and heartache. Selling online has less overhead. One advantage owning a card shop has is that you have a place that people can sell you stuff. That's probably the best thing for card shop owners. But you have to have a lot money. Good video. Thank you for sharing.
Appreciate your insight. I found this video because I was looking for info on what the mark ups are on boxes. Any chance you know how much cases and boxes cost from the distributors? Sure the box sells for 100, 200, or 300 a piece but what is the store making off a sales like that?

This is one the best productions of the "behind the scenes" look at a LCS I've seen! The organization of Turf & Dirt is incredible. My LCS could take lessons from them. Jimmy was talking about after the "initial" allocation from Topps, e.g., afterwards the price jumps way up or he probably has to go to secondary distributors? Just wait till FANATICS gets hold of the industry!!!!! Thanx for sharing.
This is a "winning the lottery" type of situation and should be celebrated, but not something others should try to replicate at this point. His business is only bringing in that much bc of the value and demand for cards right now. This can and probably will die down greatly when "live gets back to normal blah blah" or when the general public just loses interest again, and things go back to normal pre pandemic level pricing and sales. This is amazing this guy was set up for this and hopefully he is smart with what he is making now and invests it wisely, but for someone to try to start from scratch now and start making good money, they'd almost assuredly lose a good amount of their start up funds. It could work if you can last a while and hold on to smart investment cards but this is way to risky for regular people to get into if they can't financially take the hit and still be ok, but then again, that should be the truth for most ventures in life
Good point, but we believe with enough hard work any business can be successful which is why we encourage everyone to never give up! :) Thank you for your comment.
@@UpFlip that a very dangerous me reality to try and peddle to people. You should definitely be willing to give up and close down if you are in a no win situation and you keep burning money. Seems distributors are not allowing new businesses to buy sports cards since existing demand is so high, so only businesses grand fathered in are able to get product. Do you have any suggestions on a distributor?
Easy to see why they are making so much money. The markup they are selling packs and boxes looks excessive! Can’t believe people are repeat customers. But it’s their money. And that’s in store. Probably a lot worse for online breaking.

Great points Arody. Sometimes its the little things that can really make a local sports card store (lcs) or even a business in general really standout.
Exactly. I usually go into a store with a budget and an open mind.
He really dropped a lot of specific information that most aren't comfortable sharing with the world.
We’re hoping it helps others grow too. Thanks for being here!
looking to start my own shop within a couple years! this video is what i needed!
It’s crazy
No cards from the 80s 90s. Kinda sad
@@brandongarnett5582good luck to you
Hope it’s a success
I need this guy as a mentor in my life!!! I love sports cards!
Thanks for watching Yolosolo. Have long have you been a collector?
I like the attitude of this shop owner, it is awesome to do what you love for a living.
Thank you Gabriel. It's very great to be able to do what you love. 😀Are you a collector as well?
@UpFlip yes, I am starting to collect again. I have been collecting and enjoying the Hobbie for a long time. I lacked taking care of cards for many years. I just love the feeling you get opening packs, organizing, community, and trading.
Wish no card shop could ever get robbed. Just great people in the hobby trying to have fun
I wish no business would ever be robbed!
I wish no card collector & investor would ever get robbed irs horrible
Jimmy and Stacy are two of the best! SO excited to partner with them in bringing Cardscore to the Bellingham community!
We were very impressed with the Cardscore technology and are excited to where the future of the sports card market industry goes. Thanks for checking out the channel Cardscore Team and do keep us updated on your business journey!
@George Havonoc the house (Topps) always wins.
@George Havonoc they said they're only making 4-5k in profits? If so, thats friggin awful. I didnt catch that part.
@George Havonoc a 10 case of what? You've verified their pricing? If this is true, these 2 are the dumbest business owners ive ever seen. I cant even find $200 srp boxes for $300. Might be time to fly to WA
@George Havonoc (and im not trying to challenge your statements. Im just finding it baffling)
As a card collector who is slowly building is card collection this is awesomen
It really is! How many cards do you have in your collection so far?
I love these videos I am currently in the beginning stages of opening up my own sport's cards and Collectibles shop. This has helped out alot much appreciated.
This is amazing Robert. Congrats and we wish you all the best. We can't wait see your shop. 😀Have you started a business plan?
Any news bro?
The bulk of sales happened in Winter 2021 during the Once-in-A-Lifetime Card Spike, & now back to reality.
Did you go to the National Sports Card Convention last week TW? It was the biggest and busiest it has ever been in its long history.
@@UpFlip bulk of sales.
This.
These two are amazing. This would be my dream job. I wish them nothing but success and happiness. Watching from Canada, Maybe one day I'll come visit. Keep up the good work guys 👍
Thank you for watching! We hope you get to do what you love someday!
There is nothing like stopping by my local shop on my way home from work and getting 5 or 6 packs are ripping later that night. Yes packs over boxes all day.
We could not agree more Dave. What is your favorite go to local sports card store (lcs)?
@@UpFlip Houston Sports Connection here in Houston,TX owner Howard Lao. He has been in business for over 33 years.
This was excellent! Cannot wait to run my own card store one day.
That would be incredible LT! Best of luck on opening up your own local card store (LCS). Where are you located? What is your favorite sport or card collectible?
@@UpFlip I'm out in Orange County, CA!! Collect everything and learning from this amazing hobby! I have met some awesome people and I learn everyday. I got a couple more years to retire out of the military and then I hope to have my own shop 😎
Great vid. Jim is a great interview. Fantastic camera presence. He and his wife couldn't be better suited for the biz. However, oh man, I don't like where this hobby is going for store owners. Jim said he was sitting on $2 million or so of product/inventory. Or, at least that's what he thought he could sell the store for if he sold the store today.
I'm old. I lived through the last card shop/hobby crash and burn. The current bubble is cool and profitable. Until it isn't.
Because of Jim's business being on so many internet platforms in addition to the physical store, it should be easy to see when the biz has run its course. Good luck friends.
Great points letsgo Oakland. Only time will tell about the sports card market, industry and hobby. Thanks for sharing, supporting the channel and your local card store (lcs) and community businesses!
Way too many different types of card brands in each sport. Leaf, topps/100 and beyond.... going to burn out
One of my favorite host he’s such a good interviewer.
Paul is a fantastic host! He will be shooting lots more content so stay tuned.
Excellent video !! Full of interesting and necessary information ! It all boils down to hard work and perseverance, but the key to success is the info you shared from Turf & Dirt's personal experience they learned in 2 years !!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a great interview. Went to check to other videos, and saw many interesting videos. You guys should have more following! Underrated channel IMO.
Glad you enjoyed it Justinn! Thank you for the support and we appreciate you.
I really like them, wish they were located where I’m at man. My local shop is exactly what he described as being Dim lighted, simply not nearly as amazing as this place. If I ever somehow end up in their area I’m def gonna stop in and support them
Jimmy and Stacey are awesome people in our hobby and thanks for sharing your experience Turf and Dirt
Local lgs’ are the best and deserve all the support from communities. Maybe one day when I grow up I’ll own a lgs
What is your favorite local game store (lgs) or local card shop (lcs) near you idk_sis?
@@UpFlip so I’m from Florida (southwest area) and there’s a shop about 30 minutes away in a mall called prime toys and games, and the owner was awesome. Like I had finally met someone who was all about Pokémon like me 🤣. He told me they have another store which is even closer to me called Bonita springs toys and games. They’re the best and I think I’ll start buying from them instead of big box stores now bc the experience was amazing, and they have tons of stock and different items, even stuff from a few years ago that you can’t find at target or Walmart anymore
That is awesome to hear idk. Pokemon cards are so fun to collect. Hopefully one day we will get to make it down to Florida and can give prime toys and games an interview!
@@UpFlip that would be awesome! They definitely deserve all the exposure they can get. And yeah Pokémon are super fun to collect
What a beautiful store, I sure wish a store like this existed close to me..
It really is!
MY FAVORITE HOST! NOTHING LIKE THE OG
Paul is a fantastic host and will doing lots more business interviews coming up!
I like UpFlip and black UpFlip too
It's not all rainbows and roses having a store.
I’m from here in Bellingham and I’ve bought from this shop before--very nice people. This video inspired me to consider opening a shop and becoming a friendly competitor. Thanks for the information 😊 👍
Very cool Jeff! Glad you enjoyed the video and maybe we will be interviewing you some day :) Keep us updated on your business journey.
I’d be broke if I lived near this place
Lol Beo.
Thanks for this I live about 1 hour south of Bellingham looking forward to visiting Jimmy’s shop yes thanx a million.
Have fun Donald and let us know what you picked up the local sports card store (lcs)! You should have a great time hanging at the shop and with Jimmy and Stacy!
We can’t wait for you to make the trip up here!
That was just an awesome Video ! I’ve been in the sports card business for a short time , I love it in every way , taking it slow and learning all I can ! Thank you for this , loved it 👍
Super Cool Windsor. We're happy you enjoyed the content. 😀What got you started in the business?
@@UpFlip I have always been into sports cards , mostly hockey growing up in Canada , but as an adult I’ve expanded into other sports that I played like football and basketball as well . Currently I am taking baby steps with this and absorbing as much information and knowledge I can , buying and selling , increasing my inventory . Baby steps with the plan to one day open my own shop when I am ready for that step .
That baseball scenario so true,I've bought a few cards of some of my home team guys who go on a tear and sell 1 for price I got all 4 or 5
Thanks for watching! We appreciate you!
Glad you enjoyed it Mike! Thanks for supporting the channel. Jimmy and Stacy are awesome! Let's all support our local small businesses more often!
I live in Eastern Washington, I'll have to make a stop when I'm on that side of the state next time!
Thanks for the support jakestoe. Is this your first time on the channel?
You should change that motto to being smarter and more educated in entering opportunities than just the age old hard work and dedication
I enjoyed this episode. This guy was a really cool guy and he seemed like he really cared. I would love to go to his shop if Im ever in the area!
Congrats to thus Great couple. Thank you for the advice.
About to drive 2 hours north and check this shop out, didnt know it existed! Time for a road trip!
Nice video. I had a shop from 1990-2010.. Glad to see sportscards made a comeback.
That's awesome! What made you start your business?
@@UpFlip I loved sportscards and had millions of them by the time I opened my shop. I started collecting in 1975. By the time I was in high school in the late 80s I had 10-20 sets of every brand put together. I always wanted to own my own business . I still have my own business I just did a pivot when the cards quit selling and movies were hot. Now movies are slow and cards are getting hot I may do another pivot....LOL
@@themediamarauder1582 wow 1990-2010?! Impressive. Where were you located?
Kudos to this card shop. Love the Portland Mavericks baseball cap. :)
tough time to start a business at the very peak of the hype (2020), during the delusional period of this new market. if you pull 750k in the 2nd year ill be impressed. the market is correcting itself and return to hobby status very soon.
Mr F Card Art thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! What did you think about the National Sports Card Convention being the biggest and best its ever been last week?
@@UpFlip the NSCC is always a plus for the hobby :))) the pictures we interesting to look at for sure :))) not much color at all, unfortunately :))) 90% adults not masked up and 90% of kids wearing masks :)) seems like a lot of people were ready to get out of the house after a year and a half of not traveling and/or congregating :))) thats just what I see, i know others look and see things i dont.
Im very curious to see what theyll be like in five years. They started a shop during the height of the recent card market. Plenty of shops in the 90s did well until the market crashed and they were left in the dust.
@@RetroGameBros yea no hate but this is not going to last. They capitalized off the new hype.

Easy to see why they are making so much money. The markup they are selling packs and boxes looks excessive! Can’t believe people are repeat customers. But it’s their money. And that’s in store. Probably a lot worse for online breaking.
