I was stationed on the Chase WHEC 718 right out of FRAM 1991 in Boston, completed sea trials and moved to San Pedro CA summer of '91. Used to love being in engineering A-gang and trained on boarding party fall of 1991. Loved that ship so much along with her crew. Still some of the fondest memories I have. Being stationed on the end of Hanover St. in Boston which was the center of little Italy, some of the crazy stuff with the Hamilton we did and will always love Bean town!

You muse have been on the Chase. I was on the Hamilton until 1983. Yes the end of Hanover on Commercial street was a great location. Many popular Boston locations at your doorstep.

Reported aboard Midgett (WHEC-726) 7 days after graduating from boot camp (in Alameda) in 1975 and got underway for my first ALPAT 8 days after graduating from boot camp! I left Midgett after 6 months for GMA school and was assigned to Chase (WHEC-718) out of Boston '76-'77. My tour was cut short because they needed a GM3 on the Sedge (WLB-402) in Homer, AK. Of course the GM detailer decided to send me (who wasn't due for rotation and had requested only east coast sea duty billets) and not my shipmate who WAS due for rotation and had requested sea duty in Alaska for his next assignment! After 2 years on Sedge, it was shore duty in Long Beach, then Santa Barbara, then the PACAREA training team in Alameda, finally getting back to sea on the Morgenthau (WHEC-722) out of Alameda from '83-'86. Man, I loved sea duty and really miss being underway...sigh. Thanks for this video and the walk down memory lane.

@chrisconnell6930 A friend of mine was stationed at Seattle MSO (Jim Porter)? I arrived on board the Mellon around Aug of 1980. I left the Mellon in 1982 and went to Coast Group Seattle small boat station as their EM. In 1984, I extended another 3 years since EM'S were in high demand, and I got a nice bonus. While at the small boat station, I was enjoying the law enforcement aspect of the C.G. as they sent me for 5 weeks to Modesto, CA police academy. I also took advantage of the fact I was able to take college classes at night. I eventually went to an ANT Team in Gulfport Ms, where I finished up college and decided to get out after my 7 yrs. I was 25 yrs old and became a Police Officer, before I got accepted to the U.S. Justice Dept. I retired from the bureau in 2012 and felt I made all the right decisions afforded me, and I am at peace with my life.

Sharp looking vessels I must add. Liked their ability to put the fantail below sea level when full throttle turbines. I bet there are very few Sonar Techs. in the CG that detected and chased a Russian nuclear sub. When I was on the Midgett Alaska patrol, during a fishery bust of a huge Russian canning vessel, I went active sonar when boarding ended and BOOM received a huge return, ran outside and saw nothing on the surface, ran into CIC and reported "Bridge sonar, contact bearing 050 range ....right here" Bridge announces GQ and we chased it for only a few minutes. Radio to west coast US sub control [whatever they called it] and there were no US or US ally subs in that area. This was during cold war.
After 1 yar in Alameda [Midgett], moved to Hamilton [81 - 82] and detected 2 subs down in the Carribean. That was when we were on drug and Haitian interdiction mission. Good experience but got out after 4 because sonar was worthless in the USCG, and the XO didn't let me go to academy with basketball scholarship.

After school got assigned to the Dallas WHEC-716 out of Governor's Island NYC. We became the on scene Command for the Mariel Boat Lift in 1980. Some good things about being a Sonar Technician...#1 there was only about 50 of us in the USCG at any given time. Very easy to make rate/advance. I was a 1st Class before I got discharged, less than 4 years. When you took a service wide exam for promotion you'd be lucky if there were 3 others testing unlike many other ratings were there were hundreds. #2 There were only 2 jobs for an ST. Either a big white cutter or teaching in SD. You had to be an E-6 (1st class) or higher to get a teaching job, if I re-enlisted I was going to go for that job. #3 We were in Weapons division. Those of us who were interested in qualifying for boarding parties and such were welcomed. I did and it was a lot of fun. We also skated through drills and such as we had the most top security on the boat....most crew weren't even allowed in many of our spaces. #4 Very good background in digital and analog electronics and electro-mechanical systems. Outside of the underway time it was one of the best jobs in the Guard as far as I'm concerned.
