  • @holgerawakens7784
    @holgerawakens7784 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Your production on these videos just keeps getting better and better! Perfect catch on that wolverine - fantastic! Did you catch the fox in a foothold and then the cold got him? By the way, I haven't heard of a "cross" fox before - we have red fox here in Minnesota. Is that a fox cross between two species of fox? Oh, and a question for ya: If you were going out tomorrow and we could give you just ONE catch for the day - what would you prefer for that catch? A wolf, a wolverine or a lynx? Keep up the great work

    • @enigmaticgwichin1630
      @enigmaticgwichin1630  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yeah that wolverine didn’t even struggle. The fox got caught in a wolf trap. The temp dipped and of an animal hadn’t eaten recently they go in the cold in a day or two. Yeah cross is a color phase, fox here come in a bunch of colors. Orange and white. Cross usually has some black, silver which is black with silver guard hairs. Jet black and dark dark blue. So a catch tomorrow the best would be a river otter or coyote. But for the money it’s wolverine all day. I’ve only caught one river otter and coyote. Thanks for asking👍

      Yeah cross fox are awesome. We get fox in a bunch of colors. I’ve seen jet black, dark blue/purple, silver, cross( all kinds of color patterns, and orange white. We have beaver but there’s no market, it’s easier and cheaper to buy tanned beaver from a furbuyer then to trap and get them tanned. It’s still something I want to try out though.

    That weasel in the trap is hilarious!!! What’s the strategy with the small chunks of bait you toss. Is that close to wolf snares? Do you have any big bait stations or keep them smaller?

    • @enigmaticgwichin1630
      @enigmaticgwichin1630  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I don’t know why he was messing around in that trap. The bait was a few yards away. So with the small pieces I bait a bunch of random spots so the animal will get used to eating without a trap around then they come soon a set and they are less wary. Or I set the trap away from the bait and use the bait as a deterrent. Just a bunch of different set types and locations. So there are a few spots that I stop and chop bait but only a couple places with any real amount bait. An I usually set snares circling the bait. Thanks for asking I’ll use this question on my livestream in a few days. Have a good one👍

    Hey man, I enjoyed the video. I’m up in Beaver getting traps ready. This is my 3rd year trapping out here and I have a question about your snare locations. Do you just walk trails behind your conibear sets and set snares on them? Or are you following previous wolf activity around your sets?

    • @enigmaticgwichin1630
      @enigmaticgwichin1630  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Awesome you found the channel, glad you enjoyed. Cool I’ll be in Beaver for the day on Saturday for a CATG meeting.
      So I do both at Conibear sets. At Conibear set locations if I have time I’ll walk and pack down trails going behind the 330 set or on the other side of the trail giving wolves a path to take to avoid the 330. But if wolves punch out trails behind sets I’ll walk up and carefully hang a snare over their path, but their paths aren’t nice trails but just deep packed in foot prints so don’t hang the snare to high, think about where the bottom of the foot hole is then hang the snare accordingly. Oh yeah and as you trap the same areas make sure to remember where the wolves like to go and pack in trails and hang snare there before they get there, if you can. Alright if I can help with anything else just let me know👍

      @@karx11erx 👍 ok cool. Sorry about that, most that ask are not truly interested in learning about my peoples traditions.
      So first and foremost I trap to carry on a tradition passed down to me by my father from his father and his father before him going back tens of thousands of years. I belong to a tribe that is part of the Gwich’in Nation. People from the outside call us Gwich’in Athabaskan. But we don’t consider ourselves Athabaskan but Nee’tsii Gwichin.
      Second I love being in the outdoors. This is more of a lifestyle than a hobby. I put more time into trapping than get money out of it, but it’s worth it. Being out in gods creation is so mentally refreshing.
      I do get some money out of this but I’ll never be rich or recover everything I put into it.
      Predator control is a wildly important aspect of being a woodsman. Without the pressure I put on predators there will be more wolves that kill more moose and caribou. That means less moose and caribou to feed my people. Most cannot afford the expensive meat that is flown in to our village, so wild game is truly important to the elders and single parents in my village.
      Thanks for taking the time to ask questions about my Indigenous peoples way of life. If there is anything else you would like to know let me know. Trapping is only part of what we do here throughout the year. I’ve only started filming our subsistence activities a little over a year ago.
      I have videos from last year that give a glimpse into what we do from trapping, hunting, fishing, boating, work, search and rescue, construction work. I hope to film even more this year.
      Thanks again and have a good one👍

      @@enigmaticgwichin1630 I didn't want to judge you before knowing your motives, because many hunters seem to hunt for the thrill of killing and feeling powerful, which I loathe. I don't know whether you actually have to kill predators, because in a healthy eco system predators and their prey are in a balance, and it is human interference that destroys that balance - at least when the human population of an area grows unproportionally big. What I dislike about trapping is that it too often kills healthy specimens and also makes them suffer unnecessarily. I am not against killing animals to get food, but I am against making them suffer.

    • @enigmaticgwichin1630
      @enigmaticgwichin1630  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@karx11erx Thanks for taking the time to ask. There are some that kill for the thrill and like you said to feel powerful. I live in a village of 200 people and all the villages surrounding mine combined population less than 1600, and when I was growing up in the 90s the majority of men were hunters and trappers. Guys are quick to tell stories of the crazy guys and the idiots, I never heard any stories about hunters and trappers alive that killed for nothing and trapped animals for the sole reason to make them suffer.
      The only stories I heard of anything like that was when trappers and hunters did not know what they were doing and ended up wounding a moose or having a animal in a trap suffer. But once they were taught how to hunt and trap correctly those stories about them stopped.
      So there are outliers for sure. I know there was a kid or two in every village that killed feral dogs for “no reason” or a bit to much, but loose dogs are a danger to children so there was a reason behind it.
      I have also met hunters and trappers from all over the state and from the lower 48, and I can truly say that I have never met a trapper who did not do everything possible to make sure the animals they catch so not suffer. If an animal suffers it usually damages the pelt and the money it was once worth is not there anymore.
      If anybody starts trapping I make sure to tell them how to target the animals they intend to trap because a properly trained trapper will have little to no animals suffer in their traps.
      So environmentalists love to say that humans have a negative impact on wildlife. My people have been here for more than 10thousand years the hunting and trapping we do is an integral part of our healthy ecosystem.
      No animal lives a long happy life in the wild. They fight kill and are killed just to eat. It’s a violent world of kill or be killed out there. Ask any trapper they will tell you about the animals they have caught that are covered in scars from a life full of violence. I’ve shot bears that have huge scars on their heads where moose have kicked them, most likely when the bear was attempting to kill their young. Wolves with broken bones and holes in their fur from being trampled and impaled from trying to kill caribou. Wolverine covered in bite marks from wolves trying to steal a kill.
      There was a study done on moose calf survival rates in my area. Only 20 percent of moose calves survive the first year of life. So that means that 80 percent of moose calves are dragged away from their mothers who are kicking and body slamming the animals attempting to eat their offspring. Then they are dragged down by the throat and pulled apart and eaten with only teeth.
      I’m not trying to be gruesome but since you are willing to listen I want you to understand that life in the wild is full of suffering, it does not justify the few killers out there that kill animals for no reason. I call them killers because that’s what they are. hunters do whatever they can to make sure the animals they hunt do not suffer, if there is suffering it actually effects the taste of the meat.
      Thanks again for coming into this with an open mind👍
