How do I get TMJ to go away?

- Do you ever wake up in the morning with soreness or stiffness in your jaw? You might have temporomandibular joint disorder - also known as TMJ.
Your temporomandibular joint connects your jawbone to your skull. When this joint isn’t working well, it can cause pain. And if you clench or grind your teeth at night, you are likely making the problem worse.
TMJ can occur due to overuse or an internal derangement, or displacement. If you have TMJ, you likely experience pain while eating, talking or yawning. You might even have ear symptoms, such as congestion or ringing in the ear. Additional signs of TMJ include clicking and popping in the jaw and a “locked” or tight jaw.
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, exercises can help. Nicole Norenberg and Julia Heyer, physical therapists at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Centers, say a few simple exercises can help alleviate the pain and soreness often associated with TMJ.
If the exercises do not relieve your symptoms, or you continue to have difficulty opening your jaw, talk with your primary care doctor about your concerns and referral to a physical therapist.

This solved my 10years of my problem, the breathing, pain posture. There is no words to say thank you
Thank you so much i just went through a long process of finally figuring out that i have TMJ and this helps a lot you guys are great ❤
I've lived with TMJ for 30 years. Got braces to treat it back in the 90s, but even then I still have an open bite and occaisional jaw pain. But nobody ever taught me these exercises. Thank you for these.
Has it helped?
I read somewhere that braces curves our spine which is called scoliosis. So do you face any problem to your spine ?
@@kunal4076I definitely think braces and permanent retainer have a lot to do with jaw pain or any kind of misalignment… it’s hard to find someone that will actually be willing to talk about this that can help
Have you kept up with the exercises?
I’ve had tmj for about 2 years and it really doesn’t hurt that much it’s just kinda annoying
Wow the inner jaw massage really worked wonders almost immediately!
Thank you for this helpful advice!
I never thought to use the thumb massage on the inside of the mouth. That relieved the pain immediately for me. I think I even felt a dull pop.
Agreed, this exercise is a big help for me because I'm experiencing TMJ in my right jaw
Same.
I actually felt a snap, crackle, and pop.
I cant believe this😮 ...these exercises has completely removed my pain...kash yeh 4 min ki video pehly deakhli hoti😢 ❤

hey do u have earfullness coz of this
I started doing TRE (tension trauma release exercises by David Berceli) 2 months ago for 10-15 mins daily and it seems to have stopped me grinding my teeth at night. I have had no TMJ/teeth pain for past 2 months. I had jaw surgery 25 years ago and I wear a hard night guard - but I was not able to stop the bruxism (which has resulted in 3 cracked teeth) until I discovered TRE. Highly recommend anyone suffering this to try it
Where do I find these exercises?
Thank you for sharing these exercises. Saw an amazing difference the first time I used these techniques.
This is so helpful and generous. Thank you!
I’m an old washup hockey goalie and my jaw pops all day long. I used to beat my shinbones with a flashlight to distract me from my head pain to focus on the leg pain, which was much easier to deal with. Only option for me is surgery as all exercises fail. Good times lol.
That's horrible ate you going to get surgery?
Might have to one day, but being in America can't afford it lol @@FearedSlug7
I had regular locked jaw when I was on my 20s, I found the root cause and I've never had a locked jaw in 20 years since. The cause was my wearing of over ear headphones, especially at night.
🤔 thx for this. I’m having the same issue now. Never wearing them again to bed.
Thanks for this because I wear them all the time
I wonder if my AirPods caused mine. I wear them to bed.
@@tmike200687 well i felt that my over ear headphones put pressure on that lump or muscle right where the jaw locked up. its possible that airpods could cause the TMJ but i think its less likely.
😮
i'm here cause i ate too many peanuts. god damn it. it's been 4 days. the suffering never stops.
Tried these exercises along with a pain relief cream, tried a couple different ones but Terrafreeze worked best for me.
I have only one symtom, I am experiencing difficulty opening my mouth wide enough; I can only open it as wide as two fingers. I had this issue yesterday, but it went away on its own. However, today I am experiencing it again, and it has been 18 hours without relief. Both times, the problem occurred upon waking from sleep.

My TMJ just started, I have no teeth to grind because I lost all my teeth during an accident on an oil rig, so would love to know how my TMJ started and how the hell to stop it
The correct term is actually TMD.
Im in sooooo much pain all the time im so desperate!! I have done Botox, physical therapy and dental mouth guard. If anyone has something that will help please tell me!! 😢
does clicking on purpose make it get worse?
that’s actually such a good question that i want the answer too as well. especially as a child i would always show people and they’d all find it creepy (the same way people would shake their eyes at you etc) but i think that made it worse
Looking for answer to same question
As someone who did it for 5-6+ years, yes. The sound is literally a displacement in your jaw… the more it happens, the more damage it does. Once I experienced full on lock jaw from doing it I started to stop, was so painful and scary.
Now if I do it even just once, my jaw and whole side of my face will hurt for hours. Can’t open my mouth at all without it popping EXTREMELY loud. It’s so painful. Still trying to break the habit, I did it so often.
Amazing, thank you.
Thank you so much ❤️
I do not agree at all with the relaxation tips, I hear a lot of experts say this. But every once in a while I hear another one say just let your mouth hang open let gravity relax it. If you are keeping your mouth closed that is using muscles. And it your are putting your tongue to the roof of your mouth you are using muscles. My mouth does not feel relaxed at all doing these. Mine does feel relax when I just relax it and let gravity take over and keep a straight blank face.
it does not feel relaxed as you're not used to it. the tongue should naturally rest at the roof of your ur mouth suctioned as it provides proper airway and may help with tmj as you're not clenching and can alleviate muscles.
How about when it’s from hypermobility?
Thank you!!!
I have a near constant low pitched ear ringing, clicking/rushing in my jaw when I open it, and some pain in my jaw/temple when I push on it. Would this be tmj?
Yeah same but I also have trigeminal neuralgia which my medicines are helping with the pain attacks but I feel like I have tmj too because now it just a pop then a zap rushing pain in my jaw as well
I actually don't have these symptoms that you showed but my jaw muscle pain so much specialy when I sleep or I eat something hard what should I do

I have a loud popping sound on right side of my TMJ and very loud crunching grinding sounds in both my tmj sides and even if I eat soft food my jaw gets sore and when I do oil pulling I get pain behind my neck like in a couple seconds, does anyone else have this?
did you fix it?

Me... After dental filling.. I developed tmj.. Due to high filling now I can't eat sticky or hard foods...
Everytime I chew food I hear a sound and I developed tinnitus too

I have no pain in my jaw but my naw shape has changed due to mewing and it little bit loose now i can put 4 fingers and jaw is loose also plzz explain how to fix 😢
Stop mewing, rest your tmj for 2-3 month eat soft food do some jaw streching exercise
I'm here because I attempted to soften my hurting teeth, (like it's asking me to take it off) the only problem is.. The tooth im trying to take off is like, sonehow hooked aith another teeth, which makes it difficult to take off (up until now its still here) and i just woke up one random 12am in the morning. Flashing a light on my teeth near a mirror so i could examine my tooth, and i spent the rest of almost 30min trying to take it off.
The next morning, my jaws started to hurt, the next day it was my ear, (like my eardrums were being punched) then a headache to my temple after the next day. I tried sleeping it off but it only got fckin worse?? Now the back of my head hurts, eating doesn't even sound that appealing now.. So I'm trying this exercise..
I have tinnitus which I believe is related to TMJ. At night, when the ringing is at its worst, I notice when I open my jaw... the sounds stop. I don't sleep with my mouth open. Can this ever be gone?????
Hello @tamidelaney6273,
If the exercises do not relieve your symptoms, talk with your primary care doctor about your concerns and referral to a physical therapist.

What are your thoughts on neuromuscular dentistry and tmj orthotics? To me it seems like pseudoscience, and VERY expensive. I dont want to waste money on nothing. Thank you!
