Bunk's, "Lester, what the fuck?!" is reminiscent of the famous opening scene of season 5, where they convince some moron that his friend's ratting him out. "Marnell, what the fuck?!"
S5 was just Freamon and McNulty being such good detectives that when they teamed up their smarts overloaded and canceled each other out. The homeless serial killer scheme was so unhinged lmfao
After 4 seasons of them watching the bosses cook the books and manipulate all the shit for their own gain, S5 was them deciding to do it themselves. It's only unhinged because it's done in a way we're not used to.

Sure, is HIGHLY it unlikely that a detective would ever do what McNulty did? Yeah, absolutely. But the show still showed the scheme being carried out in the most procedurally precise (at least for the time period) way. So highly implausible, yes, but impossible, no.
This was the scene where Season 5 jumped the shark IMO. I can kinda understand how Jimmy would come up with such a ridiculous scheme, because he's an arrogant dick who constantly makes bad decisions that he thinks are for the greater good. But Lester is supposed to be a straight-laced cop who follows protocol. Him immediately being on board with this plan is totally at odds with his character as established in the first four seasons. Season 1-4 Lester would have told Jimmy "You're a fucking lunatic and I'm putting a stop to this right now before it goes any further." but for some reason Season 5 Lester is like "Actually, you didn't go far enough." It makes no sense.
This felt like the most unrealistic scene in the show. I don’t think Lester from season 1-3 would’ve ever gone for this. Does he not understand that catching Marlo on an illegal wiretap invalidates their case essentially? It’s the whole reason he was able to walk free.
I saw it as desperation. To me, that was at least one of the main themes of S5. For the police, Lester and most of them were desperate for funding, and Jimmy was desperate to avenge Bodie, and both Lester, Jimmy and others were desperate to take down Marlo. As humans we tend to do things out of our nature when we’re desperate enough to do something.
They got more realistic as the show went on as far as how dirty, evil, manipulative, and sheisty cops actually are who are tasked with criminals of these calibers. First 3 seasons was bs. Great acting poor writing. Needed a writer with actual raw uncut intelligence and not this obvious psyop.
He probably assumed they'd get it done and get out of it, and even if they don't the department just covers it up like they do everything else. Plus as Pearlement said, lying cop's don't kill a case.
No I disagree, I always felt Lester was a Rebel like Mcnulty. He ended up in the Pawn Shop Unit for doing "Police Work". That suggested to me that he crossed the line many times to catch Criminals.
