Invasive or not, you CAN NOT beat a panfish…catching them or on the table. At least that’s my opinion. Pound for pound they are just fun. Good luck and God Bless…safe travels also
I use ultralight spoons all the time set up like that, remove the treble, put on a single gold hook and a one inch gulp minnow. Killer for big bluegills and yellow perch in the Finger Lakes. Nice video, never saw anyone catch those cichlids before. I think I would really like that!
If you want to catch the needle fish, a super tiny treble hook is the way to go. I took one off of a micro yozuri crankbait and it worked awesome with a white jig
99% of alligators I could care less about but there's a couple in mosquito lagoon that scare me. They book it right at you when you get close and I know people that wade fish over there... without a gun.
@@TheTurbineEngineerthose gator’s are probably expecting people to feed them fish. They were probably fed at some point in the past by some dumb dumbs who should have known better and then learned to beg from people. They probably wouldn’t actually do anything except follow people around
Always enjoy Elias videos. Those panfish were HUGE. I fished yesterday also in SW Florida. Typical winter day, full moon, crazy winter low tide, prob the lowest I have ever seen where I fished. Got a mixed bag, hard to target fish on bluebird sky and high barometer. Keep plugging. I am with Elias 100%, I want to catch fish MY WAY. Screw paying a guide unless your going offshore and you may never do it again. I prob still wouldn't get one. Bottom line, if the fish are not eating gulps or powerbait then they won't eat shrimp either.
Yea you can eat both needlefish and houndfish. Needlefish really arent worth it bc so many bones but houndfish is actually pretty good if ya catch one big enough to actually fillet. The thing is down in the Keys there so many other good eating fish I wouldnt really bother with either one unless you are starving and thats all ya catch! Which would be super rare.🤣😎😎🎣
Lookdowns are definitely a 9. Try scoring skin and whole fry or marinate in mix of garlic, lime zest and olive oil for 30 min then whole grilled. Meat in between the bones is delicious. Yellow jack is incredibly good. Sashimi is very popular. It's a very versatile fish and it'll take to a lot of prep styles. Great vid of an everyday fisherman's journey
Man I loved your vids before, now you are embracing Ultra Light I am really digging it! Now I really want to go fishing with you.....I am a HUGE ultra light fanatic...Keep it up brother...
I’m in central Eleuthera in the Bahamas the past few weeks. Saw 53F on the dash in the truck early yesterday morning. Definitely cool for here. Had a pretty strong north wind mid week.
When the Snook won't cooperate, at least the baits a hoot to catch, and tastes good too! After seeing the last few episodes, I'll pack the Crappie jigs for sure next trip! ( Charlie Brewer's ).
Wow very impressed on the hits with micro jigging! Lots of activity and species around that bridge! What a huge surprise visit with the Pompano! Love the catch and cook! Oh and about the Hound fish! Yes they're edible but never tried it! They're very popular to eat in the Caribbean islands. You can filet them and cook them like fish fingers. They say to let them sit in milk for 30min and rinse it off before you do the bread bath. You should give it a shot! So happy you're here brother! Want to learn more of your bag of tricks!
Bro your snapper video got me ordering zoom flukes and swim baits to see if I can catch some snappers here in Pompano Beach with no bait. I cannot believe your success just on jigs and you got me spending money! Lol! I haven't been fishing in a while so thanks for the motivation!! If I land a snapper I will go crazy using only swim baits! Thanks for the great videos!!
Hay Elias yours techniques and strategies here in keys are very effective, you are doing much better then locals so stops calling ur self googan, also I spotted you last night driving through Marathon, good to see you are still here in key’s hopefully more keys fishing videos are coming?
The yellow flesh color is due to higher carotenoid concentrations in the fish. Nothing to worry about as it is a natural difference. I’ve seen it in bluegills and sunfish also. Enjoy!!
I'm from Germany (baltic sea) and we eat our native species of houndfish here. The meat is a bit on the dry side and tastes a bit stronger. They look very similar to yours, so maybe they also taste similar.
I had Hound fish many years ago. I remember the flesh having a greenish blue color. It was OK. I think we even tried it as sashimi. I say give it a try.
I always use flouro for my ultralight/ trout setups. I can't stand they way braid casts on a small reel. I seem to get better casts also. Just my opinion
I'm a no on the houndfish. They smell and tend to have a lot of parasites. We've used them for cut bait before, even the fish don't seem to take them as readily.

Thank you for showing me you fishing in the woods , I am really good at that
15:45 that's why we love watching you. No bs, just another googan like us out fishing while we're stuck at work. We can live vicariously through you 😂

Peacock Bass like the bait moving quickly. Cichlids like slow retrieval.
It’s Dave from the Everglades! It was a pleasure talking to you, keep up the awesome videos!!!

Here’s another needle fish recipe Making Sushi From Bait

There's an alligator around but just pretend he's not there 😂. Much like up here in Alaska with bears while salmon fishing.
Aloha. Alligators I’m aware of, bears I pay attention to, and avoid.

So many tasty fish! 😃
Good to see that you are a adventurous eater of what you catch.
That St Croix ultralight looks nice!
I've never eateb a lookdown. May try one next time
In exactly 3 weeks I make the 1400 mile drive to Everglades City for a week of kayak fishing, so excited!
That's exactly what I was thinking, bluegills. Awesome fishing, love the light tackle. Tight lines
That's fun fishing!
Needlefish are probably the most parasite-laden fish you'll ever see... I'd never consider them edible. Great vid!
Good to know

Next time I’ll try them whole for sure!
Great vid. I would have never seen that coming with the cyclids. 👍🏻.
And way to make lemonade
I ate my first mayan cichlid a month ago and they are delicious. I want to go back and catch more.
I fish for these when I want to have a quick fish fry.,. Easy to catch, abundant and taste good. One of the perks of living swfl.

Good to know on the houndfish.
Man I love your channel. Great stuff as always!
best yet

Those jigheads make a big difference imo
Hay Elias yours techniques and strategies here in keys are very effective, you are doing much better then locals so stops calling ur self googan, also I spotted you last night driving through Marathon, good to see you are still here in key’s hopefully more keys fishing videos are coming?
When I think of Cichlids I think of aquarium fish, I was a little uneasy at first watching you fillet them and cook them, but they looked delicious 😂
Great video man 💯🫡🔥
I get small cichlids on sabiki rigs or on a small hook with a nurdle of bread.
You’ll find those fillets to be different colors. I’ve had some that were a deep orange and some super white.
Phenomenal content.
I caught and ate Pacific houndfish off the coast of Panama years ago. One of the better eating fish I've sampled. They had greenish/blueish bones.
The yellow flesh color is due to higher carotenoid concentrations in the fish. Nothing to worry about as it is a natural difference. I’ve seen it in bluegills and sunfish also.
Enjoy!!
Incorrect. That's in plant's not fish
Needle fish isn't bad, I tried it in Africa... They make it into a patty and serve it both as a patty, and on a sandwich...
I'm from Germany (baltic sea) and we eat our native species of houndfish here. The meat is a bit on the dry side and tastes a bit stronger. They look very similar to yours, so maybe they also taste similar.
Lookdown is probably my favorite fish to eat other than pompano and MAYBE flounder.
Love the catch and cook for random fish. Now I have to try a Mayan cichlid haha!
What is that with you and Pompeno? You are always happy to catch them. Fun fishing and beautiful fish.
Kind of elusive. Extra rewarding to get them.
When you’re in South Florida, it would definitely be cool to see you do a show on Peacock bass
Looks delicious👍
Try cooking the lookdowns in butter with old bay, salt, and garlic powder next time. No lemon juice, and see if you change your mind.
3 cichlids and a mojarra 🤘
I had Hound fish many years ago. I remember the flesh having a greenish blue color. It was OK. I think we even tried it as sashimi. I say give it a try.
I always use flouro for my ultralight/ trout setups. I can't stand they way braid casts on a small reel. I seem to get better casts also. Just my opinion
that never works fo me
Aloha. Yeah, do the same, shimono 2000, 6lb fluorocarbon, 6ft browning, ultra lite, fast action.
Imagine interstellar neighbors see us as the cichlids of the Milky Way… 🎣 🤙🏼
Commenting in the first minute to see if my prediction of using mangrove crabs as bait comes true. They're the best baits in the groves, IMO.
I have eaten plenty of garfish from the English Channel, and once you get over the idea of bright green bones, they’re fine.
You maybe a Costco angler but I’m jealous of the life you lead…lol…wish I could fish as much as you!
New here, learned a lot every video, awsome video s❤
those cichlids are also delicious! and dont listen to the haters Keep up the bowfin vids, hell fish for whatever you want ill still be here watching!
Cichlids are great eating.
Aloha. Haven’t been to the Everglades in over thirty years. Does it still have the huge colorful grasshoppers?
Sure does!
Good video.🙂👍👍
The intro 😂😂
Do you know what kind of Chiclids they are? I have two aquariums and they look like Jack Dempsey's ! And mine live in fresh water.
Mayan cichlids
You can absolutely eat a hound fish!
What kind of cooler is that that you're using for the live bait
Engel
Trying to get the fishlocker (english channel) to contact you, very good yt-er and he would absolutely love some of the us flounders.
Nice!
Lol you should team up with skinner while your in Florida.
Needle fish have plenty of bones. They make great cut bait strips. The illegal flounder love them
very common with the mayans to have the yellow fillets every now and then. not sure why better eating the trout and no worms
Moonfish are fun to catch but for me when I cooked a few I cant get past that Metallic taste.
I just cut the fins off of the look downs and throw them in the toaster 😂
Hahaha!
Very nice size
Fry the Look Downs whole.
Better than a mangrove snapper??? Dang that’s a good fish!!!
Not better than a Grover!😎
nice vid
Nice vid man. Were you fishing in marathon or Islamorada ?
Islamorada
What is that net you use?
Three sicklets and a mojarra 😂😂
Gulf or east coast bro?
Gulf
I'm a no on the houndfish. They smell and tend to have a lot of parasites. We've used them for cut bait before, even the fish don't seem to take them as readily.
Good to know.
Fry lookdowns whole eat like a chip
Northern Pike have that yellow colored flesh and they're some of the best eating fish around if you can get the bones out
In medieval Europe Northern Pike was the most desirable fish to eat. Royalty would dine on pike, salmon was what the peasants ate.
Just goes to show that royalty in this world doesn’t mean much 😂
looks like tilapia, lol
ok alright ok
If seen ppl eat needlefish and they have lotta worm and little meat w bones
you can eat a hound fish theyre just SUPER super boney, not worth
Promo sm
DO NOT! I repeat DO NOT! Eat a needlefish. Literally all you have to do is filet it and you will see why 🤢
Releasing INVASIVE fish back into our ecosystem... BRILLIANT!
Don't throw invasive species back alive.
Houndfish are bait and cichlids belong in an aquarium not on the plate
