The last thing you want while you're at a Ferrari press launch in sunny Mallorca is for your wife to be in rainy Britain on the M4 with a screaming baby struggling to work out the aircon screen in a car you effectively forced her into.
If Tony had ticked the M Driver’s Pack box when ordering his M3, he could have got the top speed. Also Chris Harris said that you can’t order a new 296 anymore.
You can order 296 GTB and GTS from the factory but you can’t order SF90s any more as there is a new one coming soon plus it’s production is being moved to the new factory Ferrari have built for evs and hybrids
Re touch screens, I hired a new Range Rover for a week last month and everything being controlled via the screen was a nightmare to navigate and meant taking your eyes off the road making it even more dangerous just to change the volume or adjusting heating/AC. Give me buttons all day long!
7:04 no, it’s not about regulations. It’s an old “gentlemen’s agreement” among the German manufacturers to limit possible tire failures after eventual long hours of driving at >250km/h. When engineering the tire, speed, load, and the combination of the two over longer periods of time, are factors considered. A requirement to sustain high speed plus longer periods would dramatically increase the price of the tire. That’s why “hypercars” tires cost so much more.
Surprised you did not touch on the new W1 from McLaren! Interested to hear what people think about it. Personally Im not sure the looks are as I wished? they would be. Sure it will be a monster either way!
Most likely next time, it probably happened after the recording? I thought it was just me who was underwhelmed by the W1. slight correction gents, the 155/250 limit is, yes an agreement between the 3 Germans, but its imposed internationally, not limited to the UK. Here in Germany all the cars have the limit at 250 klicks :)
That s simply wrong, you can order performance packs (each manufacturer calls them differently) unlocking a higher top speed...they just take more money for it so the original gentleman s agreement turned into a cash cow. "All the cars", hell no, Porsche never was part of this agreement, fastest I drove mine was 282 real sat nav kmh and according to my car papers its max speed is 293kmh. Lads I'm not a mimiute in yet and I can already say we're way past peak driving cars. I reckon we're 10 years past it. I know Tony says modern stuff is the only way but in terms of driving and I mean proper driving that requires skill, reactions and 'feeling a car' it's gone in modern stuff. Yes the latest stuff is faster but speed and power doesn't necessarily translate into driving pleasure and reward.
Yes, we have reached the peak for ICE cars. Chris Harris recently said on his podcast that the best era for cars was 2010-2018. I'm inclined to agree with him. 2018 saw the introduction of GPF filters which reduced exhaust noise. This coincided with the EU's Regulation introduced in 2016 which phased in tighter noise limits over a 10 year span (I suspect these regs are why the Ferrari 12 Cylinder now has reduced noise whereas the 812 managed to get away with it). Euro NCAP has pushed for more and more safety features to be included as standard on cars, this has pushed up the weight and complexity of modern cars. Worst still, General Safety Regulations 2 (GSR2) has impacted the viability of low cost sports cars and this is what killed off the Toyota GR86. From July 2024, all new cars have to be fitted with a speed limiter system - Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA). We also have Euro 7 emissions regs coming in Nov 2026 which will affect the kinds of drivers cars available (and this coincides with the ZEV mandate which demands a higher percentage of EV's are sold every year until 2030 and then again in 2035.). I get Tony's point about consumer pressure having an impact on the direction of car development but it is also important to remember that car development cycles take a long time - it is not easy for a car company to simply pivot back to what it was doing before- even if they want to. Plus, car companies don't have the confidence to invest any significant amounts in ICE as the EU keeps moving the goal posts. Is it really safe to invest billions into a new ICE engine when the EU might pull the plug on it at any point? I suspect all we're going to see for the remainder of the ICE (for the most part- Toyota might surprise us) is revised versions of existing models using existing platforms/engines. Taking into account the factors above, I reckon: 2010-2018 = ICE drivers cars at peak 2019-2026 = ICE drivers cars on the decline (choices dwindle but what is left on the market is still very good - albeit hamstrung by regs) 2027 onwards = ICE drivers cars well past peak with a small number of exceptions at the high end supercar/hyper car market
Sam, I’ve never owned a car newer than 7 years old. My wife has never owned a car that is newer than 7 years old. My son (3) has never been driven in a car that is newer than 7 years old. We haven’t died. We’ve never had any issues. We drive A-B fine. We can connect our phones to the car Bluetooth. In fact, we have been able to upgrade the stereo unit to apple car play. The buttons on the steering wheel are simple and basic. Take your head out of your arse mate 😂Give your wife what she needs!
It's possible to make cool drivers cars, like personally if I were creating a new drivers car I'd ask to create a low cc but high cylinder count light sports car. I.e a 2.2 liter v10 in a light car with hydrolic steering and a manual gear box. Maybe chuck a supercharger or turbo on there too if you fancied getting crazy spicy. But that's not gonna happen. They'd say too much money to spend on research and development or that we can get the same performance out of some boring 4 cylinder with a turbo. (no shit). Performance isn't everything
Regarding touch screens, i went from I drive 7 to the new Ix1 with I drive 9, but no dial. Turns out the lack of buttons isn't too much of an issue. The steering wheel controls with the HUD make it simple to control, the a/c controls are barely touched and voice control helps.
If I was in the market for a high end preformance car I would go down the restomod path where you get the best of both worlds, analog, classical looks, switche toggles and dials, while having modern handling and performance 😊
Just a little shoutout to Lexus if you fancy getting vicky one, I had the little suv as a courtesy car earlier in the year and it was amazing. Felt very very premium for the price, it was great on fuel like 55/60mpg (very slow, but who cares) I’m going to trade my gf’s t-roc in for one next year

Chances are with Ferrari just opening the new BEV factory at Maranello the replacement for the 12 Cilindri will probably be fully BEV rather than a Hybrid...

Imagine Ferrari relaunching the Dino brand with a new lightweight sportscars that could enter in the lately vacant Porsche cayman/boxster segment (due to the company decision to go EV on those products). Maybe this car could have around 400/500 hp a manual gearbox and some mild hybrid things just to pass the regulations. Like a new entry level Ferrari that could be actually way more driveable than the old California of 2009
Nico Leonard the watch guy would give you a contrary opinion on Ferrari ownership. Although I believe he is partially culpable for his situation it can’t be denied that his 812 GTS is a Friday afternoon special and Ferrari are not sorting it out🤷🏻♂️
Car manufacturers have been able to rely on 'accepted' built in obsolescence, rust, wear and tear, technological advances and to a degree legislation, to drive market share and growth. As vehicle performance, longevity and efficiencies have improved there is generally less differentiation in the mass car market diminishing drivers for change and growth, couple that with youthful ambivalence to driving and that probably leads to a very challenging time ahead for mainstream manufacturers which they might possibly avoid by changing fuel to H2 or similar which could re-start the sector.
I feel that there's no point in more power, enough is enough, the technology is managing all that power and the technology is so clever but the engineers are at the same time killing the soul of the cars. We don't need more power, we need more character. If we look at the market for restored and tuned Porsche 930's and 964's the orders are for cars that are not over powered, are analogue and have character. Less is often more.

Got an i5 touring impending (waiting for the yet another recall to be sorted) but yeah the msport pro is purely cosmetic and really not very nice. I don't like the black on black grill look and I really don't get why anyone would want red calipers over blue or black. £3.5K for black plastic gill, red calipers and stripy seatbelts. You do get the 20's rather than 19's but just add them on for £900ish.
Have the first gen X7 M50d. Love it. 2 months ago 1 (of the 4!) turbos failed and took out the whole engine. Got it back yesterday and want to replace it with… same gen X7. Because the facelift looks crap from the front, steering wheel doesn’t have heating button anymore (in screen menu) and also not the ACC distance buttons (also in screen). Plus, the stupid X7 interior lighting arrows in front of the passenger. And the climate is in the screen. And the turning lights flash in the style of old light bulbs. All terrible. No thanks. First gen X7 with petrol it is.
Sam, the pronunciation is wrong. 😁 "12" in Italian is DOdici (emphasis on the "do"), not doDIci like you are saying. 😅 In English it would be something like DO-dee-tchee, with the "dee" and the "tchee" pronounded very fast.
Even the chassis on the 12Cilindri is different from the 812, it's not the same as the F8 and 488, it's a very different car in many areas!! Love that car! The 296 has no problems, there are several with high km, 17 for sale in the UK is nothing special, Ferrari has already sold more than 3000 units of that car!
AI jingle 🤮 I don't ever criticise you gents but this is a misstep. I'm sure a listener would have loved to do a jingle for you, especially with your falsetto, disco esque "stock watch" vocals, Sam :)
If I can liken it to a car with fake vents and fake exhaust tips, it cheapens your product and damages your brand by association with inauthentic adornment.
I just went to see the new X3 in person, the part I can’t get over is the interior quality is actually very cheap, especially the door grab and window switch area, which is a very high touch point, is awful cheap hard plastic that just doesn’t belong on a BMW. There was a X1 M35 next to the X3 and its interior felt much nicer, I personally would rather have a last gen X3.
I agree with the comment that modern cars have gotten so good that they are boring. First cars that I drive that this was true for me were the Audi TTRS and 992 Turbo S, unbelievable cars, really capable, but I thought both were too good, they both felt like PlayStation! I felt I’d never get in trouble in either, fun cars are the ones that “could”, in theory kill you! Nail in the coffin is the latest no button trend for sure. Autonomous cars will be the next big joy killer for us.
I’m pretty sure that the gentlement’s agreement about top speed is only applied in Japan, where all japanese market cars, even an LFA or a GTR, is limited to 180 km/h. Germans limit their cars to 250 km/h (from what i’ve heard) is to minimize damage and wear on some components in order to maintain the car’s health (CMIIW there)
To offer an answer to the thumbnails question, i think yes because also logic of tech evolution dictates it. Now the whole ai thing is starting to grow which is the next logical step after the manual, human controlled stuff. Ai can only take off when the phase before reached its peak so it can morph into its next form.
Sam on the topic of replacing your 992 GT3, what about a GT3 Touring, 2nd hand they don't go for much more than the 'standard' model variant. We know you had your eyes on them and it was an issue of allocation, could now be a good time?
Was going to post something similar, the audience of Behind the Glass seems to be older and more sophisticated than the avg Tik Tok viewer with a short attention span.
The way the roads are with speed restrictions, speed cameras lower speeds of 20 mph average speed cameras ,no car zones it won’t be worth buying a car in 10 years
Fed up of this boring take that ICE is doomed. Look around. Innovation continues. EVs are the cars going down because everyone is finally waking up to the fact that they are not the future as promised by every clueless car commentator.
they could be a good solution for city driving(but not better than ultra efficient public transport); I could also consider them, in the future, as driver's car..but, not unless I will have 3 pedals and a stickshift.
Sam why do you need the X3 if you also have the Panamera? Wasn’t that your daily for at home? And then you have the Ferrari Porsche and loaner cars 😅 I think you have enough cars mate but still loving it!
Ferrari needs to make a NA V12 that’s midengine and not 1M plus. New gen of buyers don’t want front engine gt boomer looking cars, that’s why they are all buying lambos v12s. Regular doors, downsize the v12, make it cheap whatever to not compete with sp3 or laferrari replacements..that’s the way to extend the life of the v12s not adding a battery to it. Ferrari lost its way these days. 296 is awesome driver but no one wants it, I wouldn’t buy one until it’s 250k or so
I'm sure some companies will continue to make 'drivers' cars, my personal worry is not just they become rare and stupidly priced, but even the small sporty base model EV's may be Audi Executive Saloon money. I'm sure ferrari, mclaren or porsche etc will still make drivers cars, but they have always been unaffordable dream cars to most.. With the demise of manuals, more and more SUVs, and endless added legislation restrictions making heavier and heavier vehicles already, then the rise of EV's, also adding massive weight through battery packs. Will sub £70k cars be dynamic? Sure something like an Ioniq N exists, but that certainly is not an small affordable hot hatch. And when your expected to pay rs4 money (£70k) for a 'sporty' Hyundi SUV like an Ioniq 5 N (£65k), I worry about the future of the affordable cheap fun option. Surely at that point the small light sportcar for the people may be relegated to history, I think however Mazda handle an EV MX5 will be the ultimate gage. At the moment I just cant see a future with a sub 25k fun sporty EV. So how long before we see the last of the £20k fun hot hatches? Pricing shows the move for ICE to EV replacement is usually a doubling in price, so can small hot hatchbacks at 20k ever be possible in an EV powertrain? I think we're in trouble, when the 40-50k bracket is the norm for a regular small EV, were probably looking at 50-60k for the sporty version... so is 'affordable' fun dead?
If your wife doesn't like the new X3, don't just go out and buy her one anyway. That's just awful relationship advice lol. If the older one is what she wants, then get her that. I don't like the black on black grill look and I really don't get why anyone would want red calipers over blue or black. £3.5K for black plastic gill, red calipers and stripy seatbelts. You do get the 20's rather than 19's but just add them on for £900ish.
Reference Ferrari 296 lucky to have one and now done over 8000 miles fault free love the car and tech
I don’t see Vicky’s comments yet on the x3 stuff 😂
Pretty sure most ECU tuners can remove the top speed limit..
Sam, the pronunciation is wrong. 😁 "12" in Italian is DOdici (emphasis on the "do"), not doDIci like you are saying. 😅 In English it would be something like DO-dee-tchee, with the "dee" and the "tchee" pronounded very fast.
Don’t waste your money on the BMW. Solution: Wife, Panamera. Sam, Porsche GT3. Job done 😂
Think you’ll be a bit disappointed in the growth from shorts.
Many other channels have said they are a waste of time.
Huracan Tecnica is the last N/A V10 supercar and the one to have.
Best and rarest Lamborghini Huracan
Rory said its heavy too. Why dance around it?
The sf90 has been out 4 years now so if it’s still not working
"I ordered new X3!"

Get the Alpina!
Not 17 for sale. Its 70! For sale
Jumping on trends is unfortunately essential in today’s day and age when it comes to running a business.. something I’m assuming you have never done 😬
@@tr1cksone why assume that? I'm a company director, not that anything I said above would suggest one way or another.
Germans limit their cars to 250 km/h (from what i’ve heard) is to minimize damage and wear on some components in order to maintain the car’s health (CMIIW there)
The technology is great but for driving. All these screens are just a distraction. I would go for the 812 every day over its replacement.
30d is perfect it’s the 6 cylinder. 30i is the 4 cylinder
X235I brand new good spec is the car to buy
noooooo to shorts. I hate it clogging my sub box.
To offer an answer to the thumbnails question, i think yes because also logic of tech evolution dictates it. Now the whole ai thing is starting to grow which is the next logical step after the manual, human controlled stuff. Ai can only take off when the phase before reached its peak so it can morph into its next form.
Pretty sure BMW gives you the option to derestrict, can’t remember the name of the option though.
M Drivers Package 😂
Yes and so does Audi and Mercedes.
Porsche has never been a part of that agreement.
@@denisspratt926 you've got to hand it to them, they've turned a gentlemen's agreement into a paid option.
Sam on the topic of replacing your 992 GT3, what about a GT3 Touring, 2nd hand they don't go for much more than the 'standard' model variant. We know you had your eyes on them and it was an issue of allocation, could now be a good time?
He wouldn’t replace his brand new specced by him car for one the exact same but used and specced by someone else, just because it has no wing
But they’re essentially the same car (992.1 GT3 and GT3T). Why change?
The BMW is FREAKING HIDEOUS!! Jesus...they are just going downhill with every new model. You could not pay me to be seen in that thing.
Sam nooooo the new x3 is hideous
All new cars are suffering because of Euro 6 they are trying to run to lean for emissions.
batteries in anything = depreciation
296 lacks soul. Not many want one, the ones that do buy them then get rid.
It’s because of the depreciation. It’s a great Ferrari
Should have got a Landy instead 😉
Do people actually watch shorts? I cannot get away with them….but if it helps get more regular views fill your boots
I don’t think to many people that “watch shorts” watch anything longer than 2 minutes. But yeah, if help the machine, go for it
Was going to post something similar, the audience of Behind the Glass seems to be older and more sophisticated than the avg Tik Tok viewer with a short attention span.
There's an option to upload shorts without notifying your subscribers, better to do that instead of alienating notification subscribers
17:18 yessssss!! Stock watch!!
Go back to the old stock watch theme, say no to AI generated music!
The V max of 155 mph is a gentleman’s agreement of the ‘regular’ German manufacturers. Obviously Porsche is no part of that agreement
The way the roads are with speed restrictions, speed cameras lower speeds of 20 mph average speed cameras ,no car zones it won’t be worth buying a car in 10 years
12C 12C 12C 12C 12C 37:20
Fed up of this boring take that ICE is doomed. Look around. Innovation continues. EVs are the cars going down because everyone is finally waking up to the fact that they are not the future as promised by every clueless car commentator.
they could be a good solution for city driving(but not better than ultra efficient public transport); I could also consider them, in the future, as driver's car..but, not unless I will have 3 pedals and a stickshift.
The mist br paid shills or government slappies.
Sam why do you need the X3 if you also have the Panamera? Wasn’t that your daily for at home? And then you have the Ferrari Porsche and loaner cars 😅 I think you have enough cars mate but still loving it!
Tony I am digging out Ferrari with ya what the fuck they doing car manufacturing and F1 team
296 is awesome driver but no one wants it, I wouldn’t buy one until it’s 250k or so
Discussing the BMW is a very low point in this video… way to long
Ferraris are known to be unreliable contrary to Lamborghinis
literally
The new cylindri front...looks like an old Rover Vitesse.. eerrrrh!
100% agree
