I remember hearing Marilyn Horne sing this song as an encore in 1978 or 1979 at Lincoln Center. When I met her at a masterclass almost 40 years later and told her that I could still hear her voice singing that song, she was impressed and, I think, touched. Her eyes got big and she said "Really?". She told me that if she had known that so many people would later tell her they loved that song, "We [she and Joan Sutherland] wouldn't have sung the hard stuff!"
No this is not Opera, it is Marilyn Horne singing a parlor song by Stephen Foster in the Bel Canto style of singing. Her technique is flawless, and her "sigh" at the end of the piece is probably one of the most beautiful lines ever sung by a human being.
I remember first hearing her do this at a Met performance with Sutherland. After all the pyrotechnics, the lights dimmed and she sang with a harpist. It was and is one of the most unbearably beautiful moments I can recall. What incredible sadness in this song and lyrics, and she gets it all. The house was absolutely still when she sang and after she finished.
Actually, it was at Lincoln Center. I wasn't there but I heard her over the radio. I met Marilyn Horne over 30 year later, also mis-remembering the venue and she corrected me. I told her that I could still recall her voice as she sung that song and she was very touched. A great singer and a gracious lady.
Questo era l'ultimo dei bis, quello con cui salutava il pubblico alla fine dei recital. Ho avuto la fortuna di poterla ascoltare due volte al Teatro alla Scala nel 1978 e 79.❤️

Ms. Horne is a magnificent opera singer. BUT here she is NOT singing opera. This is traditional style singing. Stepher Foster wrote popular American songs during the 19th century. He did not write opera.
everything she touches is gold, WHO is better than Horne! she did Beautiful Dreamer too, very touching, Stephen Foster's song is the proud of made in USA,
Thank you Marilyn Horne for sharing your gifted voice to the world

She is just incredible. The voice and pauses/sighs are exceptional and an intact attribute of a singer

th-cam.com/video/EKRNuLNPd-A/w-d-xo.html This one is not the Met, but Avery Fisher Hall, 1979. She nails it again!
