I will forever remember taking my Mother to hear Miss Horne sing in recital at Jorgensen Hall, University of Connecticut. She sang a wonderful program but when she sang Beautiful Dreamer as an encore I heard my Mom sigh and just melt with enjoyment. I'm so glad I was able to take her to hear Marilyn Horne. Rest in Peace Mom.
I found this song sung by Marilyn Horn 3 days ago. And from that time I have listened to it at least hundred times. How beautiful it is!!! One big thank you!
I like to sing along to videos, but not this one. I quietly sit back in aw. Its like watching a sun set in a summer night. For four minutes I'm no longer sitting at my computer. This is what art is. Thank you for adding to my life.
This reminds me of the time that our Marguerite house choir sang this song for the annual inter-house singing competition at Good Shepherd Convent in Sri Lanka. I was 11 at that time, and therefore asked to stand in the first row on stage. We were all from age 11 - 16. What a beautiful and enjoyable experience that was. Thanks to the wonderful Irish Sisters of the Good Shepherd who taught us to develop a taste for good music and the appreciation of it.
She has such a beautiful voice. I'm so happy she has her own museum so I can learn more about her. I love that she comes from my hometown of Bradford Pa.
This is one of songs I first heard when my father brought home an old wind-up gramaphone with a stack of 78s and a little silver box ful[ of needles. The sound crackled and wavered but we imagined the singer. Now I can hear without winding, wavering and crackling. Thanks for sharpening my memory with this offering! and thank you Musical Max for sharing.
A truly beautiful rendition of a lovely air with sincerity in the emotionally-overwrought lyrics by a consummate performer; our lives are inestimably enhanced by Miss Horne.
I love the way she took a nice breath before the last note - some people would just have to try to struggle through the whole phrase ("purists") & end up sounding bad/out of breath. But not Marilyn, she knows how to do it right. Thank you! I'm so glad I took the time to listen to this wonderful video.
Perhaps the most beautiful song ever composed. The song tells of a lover serenading a "Beautiful Dreamer" who is oblivious to worldly cares and may actually be dead. Stephen Foster 1864.
What a beautiful voice, I heard her many years ago when she made her Lyric Opera debut, Chicago knew they were in the presense of greatness. We clapped and yelled and hollered and some stood on the seats and cheered, what a nigiht.
La Scala Opera House audiences are famously brutal to singers whom they don't like....the fact they applauded her so wildly shows what a virtuoso artist Marilyn Horne was here. So lovely! What a genius was Stephen Foster.
I'm breathless, I'm speechless, I've been transported to another sublime and celestial plane. This is more than extraordinary. I can't believe I never ran across it before and am glad I did now.
I don't care for opera, but I do love Marilyn Horne's voice. There is something about it--a warmth, and a beauty that I feel when I listen to her that just do not get from others.
I understand what you mean about the warmth of her voice. There is a good chance that you would also love other warm-voiced opera singers. The tenors and sopranos usually get the best roles because of the excitement of the high notes, but there are some wonderful mezzo and bass roles that you would probably love, plus some dramatic singers with high voices with warmth. You might even learn to love opera, as I did. Also, don't ignore singers of art songs, like this. There is a wealth of that literature -- not opera -- with singers of all voice types and ranges in TH-cam recordings. If you care, listen to some by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Janet Baker, and other mezzos, baritones and basses.
Just imagine that we, as a people, were able to create and appreciate such wonderful, sensitive beautiful music - can you imagine that once upon a time - THIS WAS POPULAR MUSIC IN AMERICA! Has our culture degenerated beyond repair or what!
Yes, but poor Stephen Foster died penniless, his situation was dire ... as you might know, he sold his wonderful songs for a pittance because of his desperation. He inspired our laws that protect songwriters. I wouldn't return to those days for anything...degenerate though we may be now.
Yes, I agree with you. It is a national disgrace that Stephen Foster and Edgar Poe died in poverty - these genisues who contributed so much to our culture and who enriched our lives beyond measure. When i was a child, I used to play Foster tunes on the piano - and when I discovered that he died so young and in poverty, it made me terribly sad. Artistic genius should be reconigzed and respected and supported in every way. Mozart died in poverty, too. Schubert as well. These geniuses created music that makes life worth living (well, almost!) - and for that, we owe them a great deal.
Aloha Marilyn Horne and vaimusic !!! Love so much your rendition of "Beautiful Dreamer." It was so mesmerizing~~~a divine masterpiece !!! Am 78 years old and love this song so very much !!!!!!!!!! You , too, are a beautiful angel on this earth !!!! Gratefully, Robert S.J. Hu November 15, 2020.
It's so nice that she actually sings the second verse (Beautiful Dreamer, out on the sea..) I really like the second verse, but its so difficult to find a version where the singer actually sings it. Even worse there's version that seem long enough, but instead the singer just sings the first verse twice, I mean why?? >_>
Yes, she sang many classic American songs, including others by Foster. Baritone Thomas Hampson has also sung a lot of Stephen Foster songs. He even released an entire album devoted just to Foster's music. Stephen Foster at La Scala. Now that's something. And this is done gorgeously.
I don't care who sings the song its beautiful. I'm 5months pregnant and I hum this song to my daughter at night and she goes to sleep. She loves this song weather I hum it or I play it off here it puts her to sleep. Just hush and listen to the song. If u don't like a women singing it then don't watch the video of a women
Jonathan found this piece and learned it by himself. My goal as a teacher is to teach students how to function in music on their own before graduation. This guy will play piano doesn't matter what profession he will chose.
Elle est Divine, je l'adore, je aimée ça superbe voix, son timbre, ça musicalité, ça technique vocale. Elle est parfaite partout... Tout simplement une superbe chanteuse. J'aimrait tollement la connaître personnellement....
She could sing anything. From the most intricate Rossini to the simplest of songs. She brings simplicity and grace to this beloved song.
I will forever remember taking my Mother to hear Miss Horne sing in recital at Jorgensen Hall, University of Connecticut. Thank you Dear Marilyn Horne for this beautiful song done all seriousness that it deserves.
I always remember my mother singing this when I was just a kid. Now I am in my twilight and I also let my grandkids hear this song.
I like to sing along to videos, but not this one. I quietly sit back in aw. Its like watching a sun set in a summer night. For four minutes I'm no longer sitting at my computer. This is what art is. Thank you for adding to my life.

Absolutely agree. Totally divine.

Surely the most beautiful, heartfelt rendition of a most beautiful song.
Wonderful, makes my heart sing,I can’t imagine a better version.
It's amazing how many of his tunes are still well known so long after his death. Quite an acomplishment.
she just sang so well. great technique and consumate artistry mixed with one of the most distictive voices of our time. simply great.
A wonderful voice and performance. My deepest bow.
🌸
I just loved Marilyn singing anything
I wish music this day and age was this good. Cause you gotta love the classics!
I love the voice of Marilyn Horne. She is my idol.
people who say that women should not sing this song are stupid...Marilyn Horne's rendition is one of the best.
A truly beautiful rendition of a lovely air with sincerity in the emotionally-overwrought lyrics by a consummate performer; our lives are inestimably enhanced by Miss Horne.
Non ci sono parole per definire un talento mirabile come il tuo Miss Horne...ti adoro da quando ti conobbi.
Una tua umile fan.

She was at her prime here. You can here the freshness of her voice.

One of the greatest American voices of our era. Brings such beauty to this wonderful old Civil Era song it takes one's beath away.

Such amazingly beautiful !
Okay, that is lovely.
So effortless, so beautiful.
Blessed to have heard her in recital back in the early 90"s. This was on of her encores.

+emerybayblues If you can so appreciate this singing, then give opera a chance. Same beauty but from truly great composers (and librettists).

emerybayblues She has a depth to her voice, this is a lovely melody.
Musicians usually accompany with the simple melody to enhance the performance. She is so strong with the music Katz plays the harmony!
an incredibly beautiful voice and the best ever technique
She was able to sung even German Lieder of Late Romantic by Wagner, Mahler, R. Strauss.
Just imagine that we, as a people, were able to create and appreciate such wonderful, sensitive beautiful music - can you imagine that once upon a time - THIS WAS POPULAR MUSIC IN AMERICA! Has our culture degenerated beyond repair or what!
No question about it. Beyond repair is exactly right.
Yes, but poor Stephen Foster died penniless, his situation was dire ... as you might know, he sold his wonderful songs for a pittance because of his desperation. He inspired our laws that protect songwriters. I wouldn't return to those days for anything...degenerate though we may be now.

Steven Yourke it's obvious that public behavior , people's manners and courtesy and surely the majority of music in our year 2017 has degenerated .
Beyond repair very well said
