You have the perfect temperament Mark, for taking on hull number 1. It must be your pilot training. You treat every new problem as an opportunity to learn from it. And you exude a can do attitude, with a great sense of humour. Wishing you well on your voyage. And sorry to hear about the passing of your father. Best to you and your family.
IT MUST BE THE THRILL OF A LIFE TIME TAKING DELIVERY OF YOUR NEW NORDHAVN 51!!!!..I FEL IN LOVE WITH THE BRAND YEARS AGO AND I STILL LOVE THEM !!!!...I WISH YOU BOTH MANY YEARS OF GREAT SAILING ⛵️ 🙏 ❤️...
Yes, It is the video We have been waiting for.... Your videos are food for the soul of all us "Screen-sailors". for myself, I've gone from glaring at all the superyacht videos, to discovering trawler yachts, in the 100-145 feet range, finally realising that what you are doing is exactly the right thing...... and must admit that the N51 do look very good, and has good proportions. I am looking so much forward to follow you onwards - as the previous videos have been very good, sometimes funny, and almost educational in getting to know "how to". Best of luck with getting her to NZ, looking forward to your next video. Safe passages to you and your family.
Condolences on the passing of your dad. A fantastic video, loved every moment. Definitely worth waiting for. Having owned many boats and cruised the East coast of Australia and Tasmania in a 36’ steel displacement boat we now have serious boat envy. She is absolutely superb. Looking forward to all your future videos.
Sending sincere condolences for the loss of your dear father. Difficult times, we understand🎋 Very much enjoying your vids and especially this very exciting one, congratulations on receiving your beautiful N 51, 01! We love your candour and spontaneity! 👏🎉🌟⛴️🌟🎉
Mr. Mark and Mrs. Fiona, My condolences to you and your family on the passing of your father! The maiden voyage video was amazing, even with the issues. Happy Easter to you and your family! Fair winds and following seas! May the boat give you many safe voyages! Glad we got to see more of the ever beautiful Ms Rene! Lol. Thank you for sharing and look forward to future adventures!!!!
Congratulations on the handing over and your maiden voyage, what a great video great team work I'm glad that your taking those bits and pieces of issues in good spirit as they are normal things for any bran new vessel to have, lovely for your daughter to join you its nice to have her around, my condolences to you & the family for the loss of your father. sorry for your loss! I'm glad to have come across your channel. I've been waiting for the debut of N51 for a long time though I might never own a boat in my life due to serious seasickness. I think it's so fortunate for Nordhavn and all their fans on youtube that the owner of hull no. 1 happened to be you. No one can do it more justice than you.

Hey James great to hear from you. Thanks for the encouragement. Just heading into Bodrum to have water maker fitted then of to Kos in Greece then beautiful Santorini
So sad your father passing away but bet he was watching anyway from his painfree new resting place condolences mate. Well done on your maiden voyage Mark and family stay safe carm seas looking forward to your next adventure x
HI Mark, very sorry to hear about your Father passing, my most heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. Mark, I too, lost my stabilizers on the first 100hrs. of operation. It occurred at 3am in the morning while experiencing 8ft. following seas. The port actuator failed and dumped ALL our hydraulic fluid in to the bilge, I did manage to pin the actuators in a fore and aft position, not an easy job to do while in a HOT engine room (45 Celsius) and your vessel is pitching/rolling excessively! It took 3hrs. of constant hand steering (tacking) to finally reach the nearest harbor entrance and much needed relief from all the pitch/rolling. Mark, your doing a wonderful job with that steep learning curve, you will be a seasoned Nautical Captain before you know it. Give my best to Fiona and your daughter Rene (sp?). Fair winds and following seas, Robert
Thanks so much Robert. Strange thing is we lost boat sides which just does not make sense. To me that is either over pressure or a dud batch of cylinder seals. New ones fitted just waiting to test then away again.
@@AwanuiNZ Mark, good luck with the batch of new cylinder seals. It maybe just one bad seal, what are the chances both seals are bad? One bad seal can drain the entire system of hydraulic fluid, a weak point in the ABT system. I would have onboard four end caps for the four hydraulic lines going in to the actuator, that way you could isolate the side with the bad seal, leaky fitting or loss of integrity of the cylinder/actuator causing all your fluid to dump in to your bilge. Once you secure the end caps on the failed side, service the system with 19 liters of hydraulic fluid through the reservoir, restart the working stabilizer and enjoy the best part, you will have 80 percent of your stabilization back working for you.
Re:Fueling, do you have a 25 liter container like a Jerry can where you get the truck to pump in 25 liters and a scale to weigh the contents. This will verify the accuracy of the truck fuel pump and the density of the fuel, if they have a water content in their fuel, the weight will tell you about contamination as well.
They had a container and it was calibrated with a physical scale…no way to verify of course. Problem at the time was it took 8-10 fills of the container to agree with the pump metre. Go figure that out. Anyway problem has theoretically been found….sight Guages were out so new ones on their way currently. As we said in video at least the issue was on the safe side….looks like we have got 300 litres more on board than the guages indicate.

So you have now passed your route check, re-familiarised your night navigation skills, passed the technical fix quiz and been cleared solo as a Nordhaven 51 skipper. Those 4 bars must be in the mail. Sorry for your loss and still making a very long passage. We are in the same area at the moment, in Kos, but was wondering why you decided to check out in Istanbul ? Wouldn't it have been more practical to e.g. check out in Yalikavak or even in Datcha ? When did you film this video ? Thought I heard you say March, so that was then quite recently. I can give you a tip for Starlink, it also works in Turkey as long as you don't go too far land inward. We used it last year in Didim, Torba, Yalikavak, Bodrum, even Datcha without a problem. So chances are you will be able to use it along the Turkish coast as well. As for anchorages, you will find some very beautiful spots to anchor. If you come back into Greece make sure to stop in Symi, one of our favorite islands. St Giorgios bay is beautiful and if you come prior to the season you can have the bay to yourself. South or Rhodes there are quite a few anchorages, but in this time of the year the ports are mostly free. Kos, Kalymos, Symi, Nsiros etc, don't need to pay anything and most of the time electricity is for free. Currently we have our boat in Kos Mandraki, we pay 5 euro per day during the winter and it is very well protected. If you need a contact I can pass you the phone numbers. In the season the marinas can be a bit more expensive, indeed around 100 euro a night, although we paid 70 euro per night in Rhodes marina, so was not that bad. The ports will still be around 30 or 40 euro, also in the high season (at least last season) Just be aware that you don't want to be in a lively city center, the discotheques will go on until 6 in the morning and you won't sleep 😀 Turkey on the other hand is a different story. You definitely don't want to be in a marina, you will be paying up to 300 euro a night and then you still have a bad spot. It is one of the reasons why the anchorages are so full, people tend to stay away from the marinas. Safe travels. Beautiful boat by the way.
Hey thank you so much for such valuable information. Are you currently in Kos? We are heading to Bodrum tomorrow for water maker installation then coming to Kos to check into Greece. We would love to meet you and catch up. We are going to try and do our entry into Greece ourselves. Not sure what happened in Rhodes but we got charged €123 by agent for cruising log which he said was only valid for a calender month which ended end of March so in theory when we come in on Friday or Saturday up for it again as April. Most Google searches and Greece Pilot Book say €30 for 18 months so a tad confused. We may have no option but to use an agent but last time for one night stay the charge all up was €230 +. You cannot help but feel one gets a little ripped off in this part of the world!
Condolences for the loss of your father ..... sad times seem to get in the way of what should be happy times sometimes! My observation would be noise and in particular while at the helm ..... maybe the engine room could do with some more sound deadening? Otherwise you must be very proud of Awanui NZ . well done.
I'm absolutely amazed that you went all that distance without checking the bilge. You all would have been in terrible trouble had the bilge pump activated and pumped all that oil out into the sea. Why didn't the bilge pump empty the bilge?
That is a good question….answer got was not deep enough….it only became apparent after we left Rhodes and at this stage still not sure when most of the oil let go……First thing I check every morning now and has been added to my inspection list when underway……too much on at the time….no excuse but honest
Deepest condolences Mark, did you have to pass any formal captain training prior to taking charge? Look forward to next video and finding out how you resolved hydraulic oil leak.
It helps to have a RYA or Coastguard qualification….thats the paperwork side, other than that they want insurance and sometimes your ships log to show experience.
Hi Enjoying your story... looking at your tank fuel gauges .. are the markings in KG ( which would make more sense to you ) of fuel converted to Liters Seem a funny gradulation on the stand tubes ie 1025 and 1122 ??
I think it was to keep the graduations even and take into account the shape of the tanks. Definately in litres. In the end it was the sight gauges that were wrong. Joys of boat No.1
This may have been asked, can you explain how you found the skipper? Are you planning to self captain & crew the boat at any point? What does a skipper cost per day? So glad I found your channel, I’m researching all the particulars for a N70 for our family in Australia.
Hi Mark, I am really enjoying your videos. Like you I am a retired B777 captain and keep my boat in Spain. Let me know if you come to Spanish waters this summer. I would love to buy you and your wife a beer. Safe sailing regards Nick
Hey Nick I never turn down a beer especially when free! Likely in Spain late this year early next year…sadly we cannot always avoid the cold weather. Where is your boat based?
@@AwanuiNZ Hello again, My boat, a Beneteau 34 Trawler is normally moored in Sant Carles de la Rapita about an hour by car south of Tarragona. I spend most of august and september in the Balearic islands. If you come to Mallorca don’t forget to spend a couple of nights in Cabrera, possibly the most beautiful anchorage in the Mediterranean. If you want any info let me know.
Eek! 5000bucks for a tank of diesel! I bought a Hartley Southseas Ketch, and a 50ft Wharram Oro, and tenders for a total of five grand! Wow! Have you considered buying used cooking oil? I've run lots of boat and road diesels on that for years. It works real good as long as it's not below freezing. Though 5 to 10% normal diesel or methanol is helpful for cold starting.
@@AwanuiNZ yeah. They would be. Of course you could sell the designed to bankrupt you John Deere motors and put some Isuzu Ute turbo diesels in instead. Get rid of the Seawater cooling systems. Run a ducted fan fed air cooling system with normal radiators, or have the engine water feed through an external pipe to cool it. Just use the standard manual or automatic transmission they come with. That would improve your economy massively, put a whole lot of cash in the bank from selling the John Deere pig motors, make repair and service easy anywhere you go.... Check out what the Thai's do with Isuzu Turbo Diesels, in their longtail race boats. If you were there, you'd probably pay less than $3g to have them install a couple. Warranties are all very well while the manufacturer wants to look good and keep a supply contract with the boat company. But you have engines that will require regular software updates, and as you have found out are chock full of sensors designed to malfunction, and require thousand dollar an hour John Deere company workers with proprietary electronic diagnostics to figure out what's wrong. It's a huge problem they are being sued for in their tractors etc in the US. KISS: keep it simple stupid. -first law if engineering something your life depends on.
Needed it to be public otherwise we could not use it for an event site. For some reason they need a TH-cam file and if not public they cannot access. At least it was quick. Another video…marathon…..should,come out tomorrow.
Absolutely…feel my head is coming to the surface now. Fiona and I run through a checklist each day we travel now and I have a routine around the engine room
Hope you're all OK Mark. Have been following you on marine traffic but your AIS signal dropped out over 5 days ago. Perhaps just more gremlins. All the best.
Yip for some reason it has, we still picking up traffic and showing all correct for connected and online…just another thing on the list to sort out. Thanks so much for caring
Dear Mark and Fiona. I am really pleased you got away on your maiden voyage. You have a beautiful boat with great systems and I am looking forward to your world cruise. It is humbling Mark that as an airline captain, you have acknowledged you don't have a clue about marine matters and systems which is refreshing and it will take you Mark many months to fully understand and use your systems. I am a fully qualified Marine Captain in Auckland NZ so I can give you some real advice. It was disappointing that the Nordhaven used such a useless exhaust temperature recording gauge. Those strap on sensors are totally useless. You should have a pyrometer inserted into the exhaust BEFORE the water injection part of the exhaust. That is how commercial vessels gauge temperatures. NOT an Apple style wrist sensor which will and did melt and will continue to fail. You want to know the real exhaust temperature just like you did when flying your jet. Think of it the same way Mark. Exhaust temperature is what is so important. The engine temperature is a different thing. That records the water temp of the engine BUT the exhaust temp is the most important BECAUSE that is recording the REAL engine temp as it exits the engine. If you want or need further info please ask
Hey thanks so much for the support and suggestions. My intention is to have a lengthy discussion with Nordhavn over the exhaust issue…there is lots to talk about there. Also thanks so much for offering assistance when needed.
Wow Mark, we are seeing a different side of purchasing a Nordhavn??? Hope you get a bit of what they call their great aftersales service??? they should at least refund your costs for having your holiday ruined by these problem. Good luck, hope you get it sorted soon. 👍
they are being very supportive. we always understood that we would have to deal with any post build issues in our time especially given hull one. it’s all part of the adventure. Nordhavn have been covering all costs so just time and we are retired and enjoying the sites
Do yourself a favour; keep your MFD screens in North Up mode. Radar, chart etc. You will soon appreciate the consistency of spatial awareness and won’t be confused at very low speeds/when stopped. The only right way to go.
Mmmmmmm….ok so we can likely debate this at nausium. I have always flown track/heading up and that’s for 40 years so going North up is totally foreign to me spatially. I will humour you and try it
@@AwanuiNZ :) I used to captain large commercial vessels. The ECDIS would always be North Up. You sail in the chart the way you plan your voyage. I'm curious that pilots use track/heading up, interesting...
If this is maiden voyage, how come they are giving you your boat with railing looking like it is two years old. Why couldn't your railing look like it is new and shiny?
Stabilisers gone wrong just after purchase all the more reason to have a complete survey done on the boat after taking the boat out on trial runs as part of the Survey
@@AwanuiNZ I must admit I do like the Nordhavn boats but the things that went wrong on your boat like the loose jubilee clips to the boiler should never happen as that is just pure negligence of water connection being loose
Condolences regarding your dad, an interesting video I was thinking when you were talking about neighbouring countries not getting on I say it’s not the people but stupid governments that cause all the wars etc my answer is put the governments in a field and let them fight it out instead of sending their people to do their dirty work, Thanks for the interesting video hope all the technical issues are sorted. 😊🇦🇺

I am so sorry to hear about your father! May he rest in peace!
Thank you
Cheers from Chicago
Great city we love it
Condolences for your loss.
Thank you so much
Sorry for your loss and still making a very long passage.
The ports will still be around 30 or 40 euro, also in the high season (at least last season) Just be aware that you don't want to be in a lively city center, the discotheques will go on until 6 in the morning and you won't sleep 😀
Turkey on the other hand is a different story.
@@AwanuiNZ I found your e-mail address, will send you an e-mail with all the info where we are and when we will be there. Would be nice to meet up.
Condolences for the loss of your father ..... sad times seem to get in the way of what should be happy times sometimes! My observation would be noise and in particular while at the helm ..... maybe the engine room could do with some more sound deadening? Otherwise you must be very proud of Awanui NZ . well done.
Thanks for the well wishes Dad had a great life and it was his time.
Know your maritime rule of the road! When meeting steamers, do not dread, if you see three lights ahead, Starboard Wheel, and show your red!
Perfect sir perfect…
Good to know 38 years in the navy wasn't wasted then! @@AwanuiNZ
GOALS 🙏🏼🤞🏼😍

Condolences about your dad mate.
Hey thanks so much. It was his time at 92 and he had mentally lost his way. No quality of life left. He had a great life.
Hi Enjoying your story... looking at your tank fuel gauges .. are the markings in KG ( which would make more sense to you ) of fuel converted to Liters
Seem a funny gradulation on the stand tubes ie 1025 and 1122 ??
I think it was to keep the graduations even and take into account the shape of the tanks. Definately in litres. In the end it was the sight gauges that were wrong. Joys of boat No.1
Thank you for sharing this experience! Condolences to the passing.
Did you hire help or are these people with you from Nordhavn? Thank you!
Thanks for your thoughts. Nordhavn reps
This may have been asked, can you explain how you found the skipper? Are you planning to self captain & crew the boat at any point? What does a skipper cost per day?
So glad I found your channel, I’m researching all the particulars for a N70 for our family in Australia.
Captain just for the delivery. Around $350US/day
Beautiful boat 👍👍👍great video👍👍where is this boat manufactured?? What material is the hull made of?? Thank you
She was built in Turkey and is GRP
Sorry to hear about your dad.
Thanks so much…he was 92 had a great life. He was tired and ready to go. A great Dad
Condolences Mark and family on the passing of your father 🙏
Thanks so much
Hi Mark, I am really enjoying your videos.
Ok so never thought of that one….suspect warranties would be torn up!
This is not a new video! I love you guys' video. No repeating video !! Come on, Mark
Needed it to be public otherwise we could not use it for an event site. For some reason they need a TH-cam file and if not public they cannot access. At least it was quick. Another video…marathon…..should,come out tomorrow.
Greetings from Wellington NZ! A quick question. Is it not "done" to fly NZ ensign in Turkey?
As long as the Turkish flag is higher which it was it is fine.
I guess there will be a few teething problems, but with your temperament you will take it in your stride.
Oh it gets tested Roger!
I think that view of the bridge might be worth getting ripped off by Turkish fuel bros.
Sorry don’t understand
you need a checklist.. and triple checked before you go.. its not bad habit, even if you've done it earlier, do it again..
That is expensive for diesel fuel, its almost double what we pay in US at many marinas.
Welcome to Europe
Condolences Mark. Travel well. Regards T.W. (Ex colleague).
Hey no worries Dad had an amazing life and was 92 with very quick failing health.
A rough ride?? Younhave not seen anything yet!
Totally agree but nice to see a few cho-s early on. Good for confidence. We will take our time but realise eventually we will get caught
You need a cover for the dinghy.
Absolutely on the list
"Great video . Can we get an update on the stabilize link ?
All good now…we need to select Manual after activation
Also, you and the family have my deepest condolences 🙏! Keep up the great work!!
Why did you have to wait to put up the Star link?.
Waiting on part to connect to the unit and fit it to the mast…being sent to Switzerland for my Brother in law to bring to us
Great boat
Engine noise seems loud, I would have thought sound proofing would have done a better job to keep that at bay
Yip we have been trucking around without sea door to engine room locked tight….makes a difference. Looking forward to days without motoring involved
Is it a legal requirement to hire a local skipper for Turkish waters?
nope
39:30 sounds like "song of Volga boatmen"
Haha
Machines a bit noisy ?
Which machine
Yip losing someone close tough no matter how old….nice to know he is at peace and not suffering anymore. Old age not easy.
If this is maiden voyage, how come they are giving you your boat with railing looking like it is two years old. Why couldn't your railing look like it is new and shiny?
Will check video
Stabilisers gone wrong just after purchase all the more reason to have a complete survey done on the boat after taking the boat out on trial runs as part of the Survey
Yip I am sure it would have picked things up but never all. There was a thorough going over that got ALMOST everything
@@AwanuiNZ I must admit I do like the Nordhavn boats but the things that went wrong on your boat like the loose jubilee clips to the boiler should never happen as that is just pure negligence of water connection being loose
Not the best. Interesting thing is it was absolutely not leaking when we left Tuzla. Weird
try goat curry? cook slow
No thank you
If only you had a machine that could automatically follow the boat and video it so you didn't have to........
Haha
So true! I wonder what that could be? Any ideas?
Why all the flag swapping?
A requirement for foreign flagged vessels moving between soveriegn countries
It almost seems Turkey and Greece don't want marine based tourists. Odd.
Totally agree
Don’t you have to fly a yellow flag when arriving ro a mew country before you pass trough customs and immigration?
Apparently not…..anymore
So in layman's terms, they cheated you
Sorry lost me?
@@AwanuiNZ The flow on their tanks was set so you got less fuel, but it looked like you got the right amount
Could not agree more
