released in 1964. They made the video in one take, in 15 minutes. After
they finished, they did a show. way ahead on their time. This song
really is heart wrenching, it is embracing the darkness in ourselves.
Very moving. I think the house of the rising sun is whatever your torment is,
what prison we made for ourselves. Instead of breaking free of destruction, chaining ourselves
to the misery of our the lives we created.

Singers of the past definitely had a measure of talent that should get respect today-- but another way to look at it is that anything which can be made fifty or more years ago and still remain popular and well loved today has definitely reached down into the human soul and touched it in a way that is not easily forgotten.

The song is about a brothel in New Orleans. "The House Of The Rising Sun" was named after its occupant Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant (which means "Rising Sun" in French) and was open for business from 1862 (occupation by Union troops) until 1874, when it was closed due to complaints by neighbors.

💁🏾‍♀️ Yes! The original version was sung from the female protagonist POV. However, there are variants on how the story is played-out apparently.
This was a cautionary tail that very easily could’ve been true.
A woman tells the story ‘bout how she ended-up workin’ in the brothel. The woman met a man she’d fell for in a gambling establishment. She fell hard for him ‘n they ended-up together. He had a terrible gamblin’ problem that she had to pay-off by becomin’ a prostitute in the brothel. The woman goes home for a visit to plead with her mother to keep her younger sister from doin’ what she’d done [gettin’ mixed-up in the wrong crowds eventually costing her her youth, beauty, ‘n any chance from breakin’ free from the ball ‘n chain of prostitution].
The song ends with her sayin’ she’s has to return to the ball ‘n chain to serve out the rest of her days under the house of the rising sun.
Side note: There was also a woman’s prision ironically called: The House of the Rising Sun down in NO as well. So the ball ‘n chain could also be a reference that because she was a prostitute at that establishment (or shed murdered that no good gambler man of hers)...she could’ve gotten busted ‘n was serving a life’s sentence at this place. That she’s tellin’ the story to her Mama who came to visit her unfortunate daughter who’d got caught-up in the wrong place...with the wrong ppl...at the wrong time.
There was a home in NO nick named House of the Rising sun based on a French woman [madam, Marianne LeSoleil Levant, whose surname means "the rising sun"]

House of the Rising Sun - A house of ill repute in New Orleans, a type of men's club back in the day that would be a combination of a casino, brothel, hotel, bar, which many a young man became addicted to the point that it consumed them, and the song serving as a warning to not fall in to the same trap, because even as he warns you he then goes on to say that he's going right back down to New Orleans to wear that "ball and chain" (addiction to gambling/drinking) at the House of The Rising Sun (open all night long)

He's grown up and is struggling to leave it "one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train" and he's warning parents against letting their children live a life of sin and misery like him and his father before him. The ball and chain at the end is him deciding to basically go back to his vices ( gambling and drinking ).

Most of these early British groups that followed the Beatles in that British invasion, , including the Beatles themselves, & the Rollingstones too, covered songs of black American rock&roll & blues artists of the era & earlier! This band had this song, plus, in tribute to Sam Cooke, went into the studio & covered his BRING IT ON HOME TO ME (which is still my personal favorite of their songs. I'm 70) days after he was murdered in LA. The Beatles did a few Larry Williams, Chuck Berry & Isley Bros., etc. Had it not been for them (and Elvis) many of these songs & artists would have remained obscured & not given their deserved recognition!

Been used in movies, a lot of the 60s classic rock songs have been used in movies over the years. As an aside 60s classic rock is a golden era, like mid to late 90s hip hop. There is a gold mine of great music in both eras. You cant go wrong diving down a rabbit hole of either.

Song dates back to the 1800s or before, no one knows the origin. Originally the song was about a girl who may or may not have become a prostitute? It may be about a brothel but there are no historical records of any place called The Rising Sun in New Orleans except for a brothel that would have come around years after the song already existed

I’ve always thought that The House of The Rising Sun was an illegal gambling house, and that he was talking about going to prison for gambling.

Great voice from a young man! Took this from Answers.com "The song is on the soundtrack for Casino (1995), The Waterboy (1998), The Best of Youth (2003), Remember the Titans (200), 15 Minutes (2001), Confidence (2003) and numerous television shows." 🎧 💓 🎶

If you want to hear a powerful voice that doesn't seem like it should come out of a person, try The Small Faces - All or Nothing is a great track, or Tin Soldier. They had so many. Steve Marriott was the lead singer.

The roots of the song are unclear, but it appears to have originated from an African-American folk song, and it is disputed about what it refers to. One is a brothel whose madam had a French name meaning rising sun and another is a women's prison with a rising sun motif on its entrance. Most likely its a mix of both or even other things thrown in.

I'm sure you have. It's everywhere. It was pretty much their only hit. And it's a cover. It was originally written and sung by a woman, and was about a woman entering a life of prostitution, not a man with a gambling problem.
