Went to Bodie today (4th September 2019). The wonderful history is tied up in the old wallpaper still hanging in the rooms, the old bed mattresses, wooden chairs in the living rooms, the tables and chests of drawers, the shelves in the shop still looking well stocked with goods. It is a must see. Thanks to National Parks who manage the old place. $8 per person was well worth it.
A wonderful vintage retrospective of Bodie. The 1950s period was artfully done, with a nicely crafted running monologue - typical of that period travelogue. I've been to Bodie several times and it is indeed a special place. If you go, be prepared to spend the better part of a day to do it right. You need to experience Bodie on its terms and not as tourists. Thanks for the wonderful videos!
An old cemetery, old jailhouse, a mortuary, old mines, and 9 residents. My kind of town. Although I do believe I'd miss my central air conditioner/heater, as well as my internet/computer, telephone, dishwasher, running hot and cold water....maybe it's not my kind of place after all. It was fun dreaming though. I enjoy visiting ghost towns and cemeteries. Bodie is a must on my next itinerary. Lots of nostalgia in this one: 1880s, 1950s, and in between. Thanks so much.
What an amazing documentary. The static voice audo from days hone by, like the town itself. The informital and humorous narration of real history and images. A great post, and thank you.
I just visited Bodie this week with my family. I was surprised to see so many tourists there! Amazing look back in time. I hope they find out a way to keep it open, it is a frozen piece of American history that everyone should see.
Thank you - great films! We live in NV, maybe 70 mi. from Bodie. It is one of the State Parks CA is considering closing because of the budget crisis. Knew Mr & Mrs. Bell's son. Fabulous part of history.
Great video! There's a lot of misinformation in there - for instance, it was J.S. Cain who came from Canada and bought up the town, D.V. Cain was his son, which they've got switched. But quite a bit of it is pretty common lore that was passed down and which still gets circulated around a lot today, even if it's not all accurate and some of it has been disproven over the years. Neat to see all the buildings that aren't still standing, though!
Great documentary! I did not expect it to have to good pictures and yeah, the quality is awesome! I wish it wasn't a tourist attraction, so I could live there myself, hehehe!
Excellent clip! Amazing how the town was still inhabited in the 1950's-must have been a lonely place! Note the ending-Los Angeles used to have electric streetcars! I hope to visit Bodie some day-with the current price of gold >$1700/oz., any chance it will ever be revived?
@CandyWoorld It actually hasn't changed much. There are now Park Rangers living there, but the town is nearly exactly as you see it here. I go there once a year on my way to Reno, it's still amazing to see.
Just got back from Bodie last week (9/19/2016) been there several times. The smoke from the Owens River fire was very bad, gave the town an even more eerie feeling. Still, what an amazing place, the harsh winters and the brutal summers these folks must have endured sure puts our modern day lives in perspective. They had no water, no trees and were 11 miles from any main stage or trail....and even then, once you got to the main trails, it was rough going. If you go, beware of the Bodie Curse...I fell victim years ago and had to make a "special trip" back to Bodie to return what I took and submit my letter of apology...just giving fair warning! For interesting reading about what life was back then, get the book "Rosa May" ...she was a prostitute in Bodie and the book tells of the life she had back then...Bodie is a great day trip if you are visiting the High Sierras (Mammoth, June, on your way to Tahoe)...also, Huell Houser did one of his specials on this town...I think you can check out a DVD from local libraries.
Went to bodie my second time a few days i am 30 ago was blown away some buildings in better shape then others took lost of picture with my wife now last time I went with my parents I was 7 maybe a little older I don't really remember much
Forbodding Bodie. and the Aaron Copland is a nice touch. historical high plateau and no trees no water no nutun -Im sure the ghosts kick ass. - with dem gold fillings.
There was another film/movie filmed there around late 50s early 60s. It was about a man that was there and no one was there... does anyone remember this? I'm trying to find the name to look it up??
There were people living there in the 50s? Full time? Was there running water and electricity or gas? If not, that might make for hard living that high up in the mountains.

Great clip Stephen. Thanks so much. Makes me want to go back.
All the paint's peeled off the buildings, too. I'd love to see some video from the town when it was still alive.
Such a cool place to visit.

Could you imagine being one of those poor kids spending your entire childhood and who knows how long in that town? Damn.

Great stuff! These shows were as much fiction as fact, though.
Are any of the kids that were in this still alive?

The owner of this place was just a front men for the money people.
The only places open...the church and the jail.
Same thing.
Why would anyone want to live in a ghost town? Idk it seems strange to me.
yea they need to keep it..restore it like it do these days..how old is this video?
