France is our choice for retirement. Going on a 5 week scouting trip this fall to find a city we want to set up as our initial home. We'll probably keep looking after we get there as there are a lot of cities to explore in France.
It's all in your attitude wherever you go. Actually, France offers a better deal for Americans than Portugal. It is my understanding that pensions are not taxed there. On the NHR in Portugal I still have to pay 10%. So, France is another option for me. Also, I prefer the French language and food. I am considering this alternative. I fell in love with Antibes. It is a charming town on the Riviera. Nice was too hectic and I don't mind it for a visit but wouldn't want to live there. I'm not sure where I would live in the south as I haven't explored the area enough to know my options. Why the south? The climate.
Property in France is cheap for a reason. Their big cities are no-go's because of the crime and the countryside towns suffer from poor public services and lack of a major supermarket chain which lowers the cost of food etc. Lovely weather and scenery but they are not enough to make the move permanent.
Is France going to be your place for retirement?
We went scouting and fell in love with Nimes. It's the top of our list.
Beautiful, so happy to hear you have a place in mind

Fantastic. It does seem like more people each year are considering France as their top choice for retirement.
