Ralfy, I appreciate your access and enviable circumstance when it comes to enjoying whisky your way. This is not an intentional negative comment, but a wee reminder, not all of us have the same lot. I simply cannot afford the financial burden of over indulging in my love of spirits. If I could, I'd have a Bothy, and shelves of opened and reserved bottles to explore as my whimsy desired. I watch you, partly, because I live vicariously through yours, and other's, journey. No, please don't change, just please have in the back of your mind, not all can be Ralfy. But thankfully, one is all we need. Cheers, and thank you, not least of which, for putting Canadian whisky in a positive light. We do have some delicious water of life kicking about.
Thank you for this one. You've given me a bit more courage to open discontinued or difficult to replace bottles. I have some that were opened straight away because they were the first and only due to the price and I squirt some inert gas in them between tastings. Of everything else that's sealed right now, I have tried at least one bottle before and felt less urgency to open a new one.
Hey Ralf you are spot on about very old whisky's not holding up! I had a bottle of the Balvenie 21 .. very flat with no character at all! .. 40%abv also an extremely expensive 30 year old Highland Park (I was gifted the whole bottle) and was shocked that it was like the HP 10 even at 45.7%abv! .. btw this was not from an auction but from a bonafide government sprit outlet .. well at least I still have the oak wood case with the wee latch:- ) Congratulations on the 1000 and for everything you do for us! ... Slange frae Montreal
Thanks Ralph, giving back to Glasgow is a good thing... cheers and thanks for all your knowledge you have shared over 1000 shows not just about whisky but life in general "Quality not Quantity"
Thanks Ralfy for your refreshing and very good work I wish I have followed you 10 years ago! Retired whisky lovers like me need to hear you about quality stuffs, it’s so important and at the end of the day what’s matter the most! Merci! …..From a French Canadian fan a you.
Great video as always. Congrats on 1k! I have always said there is a fine line between ‘celebrating’ and ‘medicating’ when it comes to alcohol. Always best to stop while you can still enjoy the drink and company.
I have around 18 - 20 bottles in my cabinet open at the moment. Some hav'nt been revisited for several years. Its the best way to taste their changes over time .
Hi Ralfy, I am originally from the Ayrshire coast, but now live a hour from Toronto. Problem with any Canadian or American whisky is they are made from grains that are GMO, and sprayed with glyphosates, which not only affect the taste by making it taste a bit synthetic, it also is extremely bad for you. That's why I mostly drink Scotch as the taste is more pure and for that matter healthier in comparison. Also, I couldn't find the Glen Breton 10 year in my area, FYI.Will keep looking. Thanks for a great video! Cheers.
Wonderful video , some great information. Ralfy would you consider advising us of the prices of the whisky you review in future? for us malt lovers in places like Australia this information is very valuable as we are tired of paying the exorbitant prices for whisky and want to stop supporting those companies that charge us these ridiculous prices, Thank you
Speaking of keeping open bottles for a long time, do you have issues with the cork drying out and/or crumbling? Maybe an extras episode on managing open bottles would be helpful.
Greetings to the Isle of Man, where the biggest chess tournament is played at thr moment. Question for the maltmates and Ralfy: should we use parafilm for opened or unopened bottles?
Hey Ralfy, any chance we can get an "how to PATIENTLY taste whisky" video? I know that every video you make, you share a trick and show us how to drink it... As a newbie, I sometimes feel frustrated when I can't match the nose/palate everyone else is experiencing... Don't know how long is gonna take to fully appreciate whisky. So far, I am loving every drop. I guess is a good start. Thanks for what you are doing.
I would love to see some of your art! What medium or mediums do you work with? Painting, photography, drawing...? Cheers and keep up the wonderful work!
Talking about having multiple bottles open Ralfy are you still using the wine preserver and have you got anything new to say about it? (since review 218)
Ralfy - I see you do not review a lot of Longmorn on your channel. I recently came across Longmorn 18yo in a shop, and are considering buying. What are your thoughts on this malt / distillery?
Like @LeonScheppink, at times I have to speed up finishing bottles to make space for new ones. If the bottle is, say, 1/3 full that's the one I target first and be done with it. But, I can proudly say I don't drink alcohol every day. It's more like once, maybe twice, per week. I too have seen what Ralfy calls the Upmarket Alcoholics, which I call Uptown Drunks. Indeed they're clean cut, urbane even, and no one calls them out regardless that behind the scenes many are destructive, sometimes just as abusive as the not-so-sophisticated drunks.
My friend is an "up-market alcoholic". Drinks the best wine and scotch. Seems to me like he should switch to rotgut after 2 or 3 because I can't believe he's tasting anything.
You have me worried now ralfy with a few of my unopened bottles I have at the back of my cupboard saved for a day, not yet come. I live in a warm climate now I'm not sure if I should make an effort to open them b4 they may go off.
I was keep my bottles for years and had 20+ bottles at all times, but then inflation hit and the economics of it hit. Now I keep perhaps 6 bottles on hand and keep them for several months instead of years. I also keep one or two “value” whiskies or rums in the rotation to save money.

Thanks for the extras. As always it is a pleasure to listening to your stories and tales. Keep on marching on. Cheers from pat-pal in Germany

The only reason I might have to speed up emptying bottles is to make room for new ones. 🤷🏻♂️
Exact same for me. I don't have the luxury of enough space to house hundreds of bottles.
indeed

I agree. No rush to finish bottles. Once my bottles get below 1/3 full I just recant into a 200ml bottle
Congratulations on 1k episodes! Love your channel, you have definitely made me a more informed consumer. I appreciate your input and commentary’s.

Ralfy, where is the line in the sand for a drinks per week limit to remain healthy? 7 drinks a week? 10?
Talking about having multiple bottles open Ralfy are you still using the wine preserver and have you got anything new to say about it? (since review 218)
Is a list of non chill filtered, natural coloring of malts available, especially for US purchasing?

@7:46 - Take that, Glenmorangie! 🙄
Wish I could like this Isle of Arran Sauternes Cask better....
